I was absolutely CHARMED by this little cafe in Micanopy. It bills itself as Micanopy's oldest cafe. When you walk up, you feel like you are in a tropical oasis. There are vines on the building, green plants all over the patio, which was built around a large oak tree dripping with Spanish moss. And then, you go in and you see the menu. It only has a few items on it, so you know it's gotta be good. We opted for the Reuben sandwich and the Cuban sandwich. They are simply prepared, with delicious bread (so important!) and served with a pickle. The Cuban was one of the best I'd had. The meat was high quality and generous. The bread was crusty on the outside and chewy in the middle. I hated to leave any behind, but the sandwich was huge! I would go back to this place in a heartbeat! The food was delicious and a very pleasant surprise. Nothing about the outside or name spells Cuban, but it easily compares to the food we've had in Miami and Naples. Delicious Cuban sandwich, rice and beans, and carrot cake. Stopped in for a quick lunch during holiday shopping in the local Micanopy shops. The cafe came highly recommended from the local shop owners. We were pleasantly surprised at how tasty the food was at this lovely quaint cafe. The location is in a quaint area of a historic little town. The outside seating is very nice because of the scenery and feel of this small town's main street. Unfortunately, the food is less desirable. The Cuban (Latin) food here is not very good. Stick with coffee and desserts. The staff was friendly enough, but something is missing. Quick stop over before heading to Gainesville! Everything is perfect for a restful date away from Orlando. Servers, owner, food and ambiance are worth five-star each. The Old Florida Café wasn't exactly what I was expecting, honestly: given its name I was more or less expecting some form of "Old Florida" food but instead they serve pretty typical sandwiches with an emphasis on Cuban sandwiches and also black bean soup. None of this is bad, understand, and the Cuban sandwich I had was in fact quite good, a large portion, and at a fair price, but there's nothing aside from the atmosphere of an old building and its front porch to connect me with what I think about as "Old Florida" of our region. The Cracker folk who lived in "Old Florida" didn't eat Reubens and Cubans, I daresay. The Pearl Country Store just down the road on US 441 however has great BBQ plus traditional sides like greens and cole slaw, plus great desserts. That's much more "Old Florida" to me. For what the Old Florida Café does, it does well: the setting is nice enough, the service is friendly, and the prices are fair. To me, there's nothing really distinct about them however. read more

The customer service and food quality have seriously gone down the toilet. For one: their ice cream was old and freeze-dried, the girl behind the counter absolutely had zero idea what was ordered, the 5 minute wait time promised for sandwiches was more like 20 minutes and the food was stale. My Fiance and I are regulars to ye Olde Micanopy, but we never really eat there. We have gotten root beer floats and water(At nearby Coffee N cream), but never actually noshed. We were hungry for foods a few weeks back and dropped into Old Florida Cafe, but they had stopped serving food at 4. We wanted to try the "Rebecca" which was a Reuben...with bacon. So we made a mental note and went back yesterday. We both wanted that Rebecca cause she sounded delicious, but I decided to try their Cuban sandwich after realizing that they serve quite a few "Cuban" dishes like black beans and rice, and black bean soup. I am a sucker for a good Cuban , having had it in Miami, and Ybor City a million times. The Sandwiches come with a pickle on the side, but no chips. The Cuban was 5.95, the Rebecca was 6.95, a small bag of chips is .75 and two cans of soda were 1.25 a piece. The place is a cafe, but also sells antiques, and fauxtiques. Its very cramped on the merch side. there are a few tables on the cafe side , inside and more tables outside. The Porch has a huge oak right up in the middle, and Jasmine vines which are really fragrant this time of year. BUT the rows of Crusty books in cardboard boxes lining the walkway detract from the ambiance. There was also just "stuff" here and there for sale that wasnt in any sort of organized fashion. The girl taking our order was new, or I hope she was because when we asked her if chips came with the meal, she picked up a menu, read it and said "no" and she also asked someone in the back how much the Rebecca was (its not on the menu) even though I am sure she has passed by the same sign that's on the register that says "The Rebecca....6.95" a few times. We sat outside, and there were random ancient Trivial Pursuit question cards on the tables, ours had the "nazi germany" theme for some reason. The table was wobbly, the chairs were not that comfy (metal no cushions). We got our food pretty quickly. Now, a Cuban...to me is supposed to be on Cuban bread...with ham, roasted pork, Swiss cheese, pickles and mustard. A press is usually used to press the sandwich so that it is compact, the bread is toasted and the cheese is melted. OFC Cuban was on Cuban bread, had typical Sysco deli ham slices, Roast pork (that tasted straight outta a bag...and not an oven), swiss cheese, one round slice of pickle, and mayo. It was pressed/heated but not to where the sandwich was all gooey and crusty....the bread was toasted and the mayo/ham/cheese/pork/pickle concoction was lukewarm inside. The cheese didnt even melt enough to hold it together. I had to scrape off the mayo, cause there was so much. the lack of mustard was noted. It wasnt a Cuban...it was a warm ham sandwich. The Rebecca, was also disappointing. it had corned beef, toasted rye bread, sauerkraut, cheese and thousand island dressing and also Bacon. It was overly sweet tasting, and there wasnt enough bacon on it to even taste the bacon. Both sandwiches were very small. 16 bucks and change, and we both have NO idea how they can charge that much for such poor quality food. That and the flies and mosquitoes were so bad that we were waving our hands about like crazy people, they should really have citronella burning or fans out there. end note. there was a sign in the ladies room that said "to offset the cost of Toilet paper and water bills please buy a soda on the way out"...how about you guys buy that TP with the money you are overcharging customers for food? Edit: Their last restaurant inspection had critical violations for not washing hands, not keeping meat and milk at correct temp, no hair restraints, food containers stored on floor, not dating food that had been opened for more than 24 hours, and that wasnt the first time they have been noted for those violations. youve been warned. read more

Old Florida Cafe is definitely a place you go to eat not necessarily to associate the name with the building. The building is another oddity in town, but who cares when the sandwiches are the best there are? You have several choices of breads and sandwich types to choose from, I suggest the pumpernickel BLT. The lines are long sometimes, and inside seating can be hard to find. But there is a lovely deck out front with table umbrellas to relax under. Again, go here for the food. The staff are friendly and funny. You might even find some fun little antique or other goody inside the shop while you're waiting in line to order. But you won't be disappointed. read more

I absolutely love this Cafe!!! I have been going to Old Florida Cafe for 6 years...Their sandwiches are very generous( they use real bakery bread, not a square small piece of bread). There is always a nice amount of meat on the sandwiches! If you love soups and sandwiches, you will love this place! Yes, the amount of one sandwich is 5.95 w/o chips/fries BUT the sandwiches are HUGE.....If you go to Mcd's you will pay $5 for a greasy "burger" that has sat in a warming tray ALL DAY!!! The staff is always friendly and very down to earth! As for the post above....Yes, the flies are bad, BUT they do offer INSIDE seating :) Yes, there is a sign inside the restroom that says please consider buying a drink on your way out to defer the cost of water usage and TP, But I would rather they do that than not have the restroom open to the public! Some chairs DO have cushions,some don't... BTW, I LOVE their cubans!!!! They are ALWAYS pressed :) ... Not a sandwich lover (nor a fan of any Cuban sandwich), on the recommendation of a friend (who's a resident of the area), I ordered the rice & beans (to go). For just under $5, they are accompanied by freshly chopped onion, sour cream, & salsa (the latter sadly from a big plastic handheld dispenser). But considering how good the beans & rice are, the canned salsa can be forgiven. Stopped here with a friend for lunch. I had the perfect blt: the freshest bread, the crispest lettuce, tasty bacon cooked to perfection and just the right amount of mayo. You know you're in a really good restaurant when you can't possibly duplicate the meal at home. My friend had the reuben about which she is an expert. She gave it top marks. The decor is funky. I saw this restaurant on groupon, and since we were going to be in the area, I decided to buy it. The people there were so incredibly nice. The food very yummy. My husband got a cuban, I had a turkey and roast beef sandwich. Both were very good. We shared black beans and rice. It was so good. But the pie...oh my goodness the pie... I can't Sam enough about the pie. We tried a four corners pie. It was melt in your mouth wonderful. The best pie we have ever had. We ended up getting another slice. The next day we went back for more. We ended up buying a whole blueberry pie. PLUS we tried there key lime.... IT WAS SOOOOOOO GOOD. I can't describe how wonderful it was. It was creamy and tart with out being overly tart. The graham cracker crust was perfect. I don't even eat key lime pie because it's always too tart, but not this pie. The blueberry pie almost didn't make it home from our hotel because we wanted to finish it that night. read more
