What I bought.

Located on the Hudson river with exceptional views of the Manhattan skyline, Hoboken is rich in Brownstone apartments, taverns, bistros and late 19th century architecture. It is also the birthplace of Frank Sinatra. Did you know they even named a road after him called Frank Sinatra Drive? On the weekends the city is overloaded with young adults seeking what young adults seek. I come to Hoboken for pastries, notably from The Old German Bakery. On this visit, I was visiting an friend and his wife who live in one of the Brownstones. The Old German Bakery is not a large store but it is fully stocked in the morning. I came on this pilgrimage for blueberry cheese strudel, German sweet cheese w/ strawberry sauce strudel,, apple strudel and an almond croissant. Each cost me $5.50. What we do for love! The stores have no artificial flavors, coloring or preservatives. The products sold follow original recipes produced by Haytad Urachyan, who was born in Cologne Germany.

These have imported cheese from Europe, but the paper stuck to the Raspberry & Cheese pastry

Dang. I wanted to like these so much, but at $5.50 per pastry, I just couldn't justify buying these again. I got sold on the cheese that he imports from Europe, so I got the two special pastries with that cheese. But the texture of the cheese is like mushy/crumbly with a taste almost like mozzarella and Swiss but blander? The raspberry one got the parchment paper stuck on it so I had to peel that off before eating it. It took like 5 minutes to peel off that paper with my nails. Pretty sure I still ate some paper. There's also nowhere to sit since he sells this stuff outside the door. There were no signs showing what each pastry or bread is, and no price. He explains what everything is though when it's your turn to order. But I won't be coming back. :(

We love Old German Bakery! The owner and his family are delightful and offer such delicious breads and pastries. There's so many savory and sweet, but not overly sweet options. Love to stop by and grab some of my favorites especially on the weekend. His small cart in front of the store is so similar style to shops in Cologne, Germany where they are from. I'm all about supporting local businesses and these guys have my heart

The food was really good and priced well. The shop guy was so nice I really enjoyed his service. The local of the place was very cute as well. The pastries are a bit sweet but nothing too crazy!

Mmmmm. Almond croissant = amazing. Strawberry cheese danish = spectacular. Friendly owner from Cologne, Germany chatting with us about her hometown = priceless.

Oh my. This has got to be one of the best, if not thee best apple turnovers I've had to date. We'd passed the bright colored cart outside the shop on our way to have lunch. There was a line, so I was curious. Made a mental note to take took a closer look on the way back. The interior of the store is closed off to customers, but there are some cakes in the store window. The cute cart is full of chocolate croissants, berry and cheese danishes, and these amazing apple turnovers. They were so perfect looking that I had to buy one. I'm usually disappointed in turnovers, because they're too doughy or soggy, and the fruit doesn't have much flavor. Nor does the gelatin that is used as filler. I told myself I'd only have a quarter of it and save the rest for later. I took one bite while walking to find a coffee shop, and it was clear this flaky piece of heaven on earth wouldn't last long. Whatever fat & flour they use to make these crispy, light layers of dough isn't your typical American recipe. It's just sweet enough without being over bearing, and the apple chunks are plump and fruity. I don't know why the interior is closed, but I would spend mini morning indulging if you could sit and have pastries and coffee inside. I highly recommend this bakery, and will most definitely get a chocolate croissant on the next visit.

I come here every chance I can when I am in hoboken. You can get cake slices and pastries without pre ordered though you have to pre order full cakes and of course by closing time most slices are sold out. I had the 4 layer chocolate cake and it was amazing. So light and not too sweet. Very delicate but hit the spot

My boyfriend and I got: Almond Croissant ($4.25) Savory leek pastry ($4.25) Cherry Crispy Chocolate ($6.90) Everything was "eh" :( Not entirely sure what the hype is here, but I have been told by my boyfriend that my pastry expectations are very high so maybe that's it? Very cute storefront though:)

stopped by here spontaneously on a Saturday afternoon as I've seen the cart that is the front area of their store, many times! I never had a chance to stop by, but there was no line so decided to see what they had. both staff I talked to were super friendly and patient in explaining german desserts, the light and not sugar-heavy flavors that their desserts have, which was just what we were looking for!! the coffee cake, chocolate mousse, and the pineapple papaya one I believe?? (something like that) were super delicious and just as described. they are on the pricier side at about $6 a piece and we ordered about 5 slices of their cakes, but they were super tasty so I'm excited to come back here to come and support a local bakery :)

This is by far the only place my mom approves for Black Forest Cake. They are pricey, but worth it for special occasions. The cake is so moist and flavorful! I like how the whole cake comes cut already due to the cake losing its shape if I cut it at home. (The owner suggests this to be cut by him)

What a delightful bakery! Loved their latte, almond croissant and pastries. Talk to the owner before you choose the pastries. He is very knowledgeable and will tell you all the ingredients and also tells you the ones he doesn't fancy and why. The place gets really packed in weekends. The almond croissant I had was so succulent and yum.

While the indoor dining room has all the charm of a traditional German restaurant, my favorite spot is one of the outdoor tables out front. There aren't many of them, so grabbing one can feel like winning the lottery. Once you're settled in, it's the perfect place to enjoy a drink and watch the neighborhood go by. Dogs are welcome outside, which means I can join my humans for a proper German happy hour. There isn't a dog menu, but I was more than happy to supervise the arrival of the restaurant's famous giant soft pretzel. It is every bit as good as everyone says. We've mostly stopped by for drinks and snacks rather than a full meal. Mom isn't usually much of a beer drinker, but she discovered a rosé cider here that she absolutely loved. Between the drinks, the pretzel, and the atmosphere, it has become one of our favorite casual outdoor stops. The service has always been friendly, and the authentic German feel makes it stand out from a typical neighborhood bar. Dogba's verdict: Giant pretzels, cold drinks, outdoor seating, and prime people-watching. A wunderbar Upper East Side stop for pups and their humans.

And boy, were we in for a pleasant surprise, as we truly enjoyed ourselves. No one does beer hall like a German place. This is just facts. We had the Berliner Weisse, which comes in a .5L or 1L boot (does German beer count if it's not in a boot?). This was a delicious raspberry syrupy undertone wheat beer, and definitely a must have for next time. Though there were like a dozen other beers I need to have. They also have a pretty extensive wine selection, if that's your thing. We were there for a brunch. When we arrived, before 1pm, it wasn't busy at all. By the time we left, it was pretty full. The bar had seats though. Anyhoo, I tried their "energizer" which were eggs any style (poached for me), creamed spinach and mashed potatoes. Never had a breakfast like this one! It was almost like a deconstructed eggs Florentine. YUM. My husband had the Heidelberger which was a German style hamburger with frizzled onions and mashed potatoes. He let me try some, it was pretty fantastic so I may need to try it sometime myself. Also do not miss their ginormous Bavarian pretzel. It was quite possibly the best I've had (and I've had many!). The service was outstanding, and the vibe was ... I dunno a step above what you saw in Fast Times where they go to the German restaurant. My only regret is that I didn't get the apfelstrudel. Next time! Washrooms are single occupancy.

Chill atmosphere. Great menu. Solid Beer. Zeplin Hall delivers on all those fronts…read more Came here for a friend's birthday and it was an overall great experience. Large outdoor patio with plenty of space, great for large groups. It's a huge venue in general - 3 bars and plenty of screens. Catching a game here would be an excellent time. It's been years since hanging out here. Lots of space for big groups, and it has been busy…read moreeverytime I have been. Came for a birthday party (that was moved from a park last minute because of the rain). We were in the front room and had 3 large party platters of food. The food was tasty overall - there were 2 platters with fried chicken, jalapeño poppers, huge pretzels, fries, mozzarella sticks, celery, and a lot of sauces. There was also a platter with a bbq theme with smaller pretzels, pulled pork, sausage, kraut, cabbage, german potato salad, smoked wings/chicken, ribs, another type of meat, fries, and sauces/cheese dip. A member of the staff said the front room wasn't child friendly and a couple had to sit in the big noisy room in the back with their kid while the majority of the party was up front. Not really sure why it mattered because both rooms have bars serving alcohol, and later on more and more kids were staying up front and no one told them to move. The same staff member went around taking used plates, cups and attempted to remove the food platters when they were still actively being picked over (a pet peeve of mine). He did try to accommodate us in the back by offering a long table (but it wasn't enough for the whole group) so it became the kids table. The bartender was attentive and I did not have to wait to long to be served. They have a large jug of water so you can serve yourself and the bartender can focus on everything else. I had a couple of gin and tonics that were under $9 each. They let the party bring in and serve a homemade cake.

Absolutely fire doner kebabs. Best I've had in the area!…read more Came here last year when stopped by the mall and it really hit the spot. So naturally, had to check it out again this time and try it again. I don't know what it is, but well seasoned meat with their crispy fries just works. The original German doner kebab with the mixed beef and chicken was incredible. It was juicy, perfectly seasoned meat with that signature vertical spit char, loaded into their soft, flavorful handmade waffle-style bread. Every bite was a hit. Also ordered the chicken doner box with fries. The fries were very crispy and seasoned well and the chicken was just as I remembered it. A flavor bonanza. Rich, aromatic, and very delicious What was really the highlight was the sauces though. The garlic sauce was creamy and addictive, and the spicy one had just the right kick without overpowering everything. Portions are solid for the price. Everything felt fresh and hot, and the staff was super friendly and quick even during a busy mall rush. If you're at the American Dream or craving quality halal doner, this is the move. Way better than your average kebab spot. This is premium. Will definitely be back for the crispy doner rolls and maybe the Doner Burger next time.

Schnitzels Stony Brook, NY…read more@eatschnitzels Schnitzels is a German-American gastropub known for its awesome variety's of schnitzel, German beer, and pub fare. They are open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and serving up amazing meals at each. Choose from 5 different gravies and then your schnitzel. Traditionally served with pork or veal, but they do have chicken or eggplant as well! I went with the classic Weinershnitzel which is traditionally served with veal schnitzel and served with brown gravy. Lindsey got the Chicken Rahmschnitzel which is schnitzel topped with a creamy white reisling-infused mushroom gravy. Both were filled with flavor and we were very impressed! All schnitzel is served with spätzle, seasonal vegetables, and red cabbage. This was the definition of a comfort meal that. We started with their Bavarian Cheese Board, and classic German appetizers - potatoes pancakes paired with this insane apple butter, and potato dumplings with your choice of gravy. We loved the vibe in there. Great pub style feel but also nice indoor and outdoor eating. Our server Eden was amazing and such a great help! We truly loved this place and we can wait to go back!
