Their Nuremberg sausages are similar in texture but need to marinate with sauerkraut to get the flavor of famous Nuremberg sausages. Very pricey, but worth remembering when I lived in Deutschland. I go here every time I have worked out enough to deserve a pastry. haha. The almond horns and macaroons are just ridiculously delicious. I wish they had more of a pastry selection but it's more a bread place and grocery store than a bakery. It's the only place I can find German treats though that are freshly made. So, this is the first time I have left a review...EVER. This afternoon I stopped at 3:04 ( a teeny bit late because of traffic ) and had the worst, most rude experience. For some reason, I always thought this unassuming building was some kind of chain pretzel stand. I never tried it because I didn't know what it was. My husband heard about this bakery from a co-worker and we knew we had to try it. The inside of the building is full of German and central European products, not to mention baked goods. I used to LOVE this place. It's still okay, but not what they used to be. The dry goods selection is spare (check expiration dates) and it's all super expensive now. I used to visit Phoenix with an empty suitcase to fill from Old Heidelberg and take back to Michigan. No more. I can get a packet of Hackbraten mix for $2.00 and OH is wanting $3.75+ for all their sauce and spices. Their bakery and meat dept are the best. Just don't go there for dry goods. Absolutely best German store EVER, even better than the ones that used to be in NJ and NY. Their breads and baked goods are authentic and truly worth the trip. Also, they have a large selection of authentic German products, like candy, pickles, vinegar, sauces, gravies, seasonings, Spaetzle and Knoedl mixes, soaps, deodorants and fragrances ... all from Germany... as well as German magazines. The only German store outside of Germany that can compete with Old Heidelberg is Siegfried's Deli in Salt Lake City, UT. As for the disgruntled customer who claimed he had to wait and walked out... obviously never been to a real German bakery in Germany. My daughter and I wondered in here for the first time today and are so glad we did. What a find! They have a market filled from imports from Germany that are free of artificial ingredients like food coloring, corn syrup, etc. we got a cheese and cherry danish, a loaf of the sunflower bread and a bag of gummy candy for my daughter. The danish was so delicious we practically inhaled it. It was crispy, flavorful but not overly sweet. The cherry filling was delicious. The bread is beyond yummy...soft, flavorful and a wonderful texture. The gummy candy is so flavorful...not like the chemical junk sold in the US. We are now raving fans and since its two blocks from our house will be walking there often. read more

This is one of our favorite bakeries when we're looking for some fresh Rye Bread and possibly some delicious Apple or Cherry Strudel. They also have plenty of other tasty German goodies and treats that will keep you dancing along your merry way. Just check out their photos. Usually pick up one of their fresh baked Rye Breads and some spicy German Mustard on my way back from the German Sausage Company down the street. Each day of the week is a little different and you may want to call them first to see what types of items they are baking. You can always have them save you a loaf and pick it up later at the end of the day. They also sell a nice variety of Stiglmeier brand German Sausages that are made up in the cold and snowy Wheeling, Illinois. It is a little pricey but very fresh with some nice authentic flavors and definitely worth the extra expense. Just so happens Wheeling is where we lived when the stork dropped me down the chimney back in the 60's. I'm pretty sure they were not there at that time. It was a very small town and the great blizzard of 67 drove us out of there for a warmer climate. I told the ladies behind the counter that we used to live there and they had a good chuckle. Service is always friendly and they have that cool family owned and operated attitude and pride in their products. They do have a tendency to run out of certain items during the day and will gladly tell you when they will be available in the future. I normally have them hold a loaf of Seeded Rye for me and they are happy to do so. Sorry I have no photos for this place. I'll try and take some in the future. It's just too good and I'm usually eating some before the car even gets started. It's good to bring some extra napkins just incase. See you there next time. I love this place! It might looks small and nondescript from the outside but do not let that fool you... It is totally worth getting out of the car and going into and checking it all out! Half of the store is a deli and bakery, while the other half is a small grocery area. There was quite a number of people in there yet they kept it moving along. All of the customers were speaking German with the store owners, which goes to show you how authentic the place is. I'm a bit dismayed by the one and two stars given to this place, because people weren't treated like royalty. For Christ's sake, get real! How can one be any more authentically German than to be rude and distant. Trust me, I know: not only have I lived in fascist Austria, I'm one of the tribe. We only smile AFTER we invade our neighbors; never before. And now that you've had your first lesson on friendly German behavior (sort of like "friendly Republican" behavior), let's get to what's important: the food. The bread here is very good; but this is only because Phoenix offers bad bread and intolerably bad bread. Unfortunately, the owners know this, too; and charge you accordingly. The prices aren't outrageous by any means; but it's obvious you're being charged for edible food and not based on the "worth" of the bread. Unfortunately, this bread dries out quickly; and that's how it should be, silly Americans: good bread doesn't use preservatives and dries out quickly. This isn't Wonder Bread (aka soapy sponges). The pretzels and pretzel rolls are very tasty. I can only guess the people on here, who don't like it are used to Rolled Gold. More power to you: I like real food. Here's the problem with the pretzels, though: they, too, dry out quickly; and when they do, they become hard and taste nothing like when they're fresh (and they ain't cheap). Fortunately(?), this encourages you to inhale them so they don't go bad (and as good as they are, you can easily "inhale" them). As for everything else, thank you, no. The imported products are overpriced, can be found in other places for less, and are, frankly nothing special. This refers especially to the pre-packaged dark breads and cold cuts. The chocolates and other imported goods can be entertaining and tasty, but I really can't afford to hock one of my cars to fill a shopping bag. Let's get something very clear in conclusion people: you ain't in the Reich and there isn't a bustling Volksdeutsche colony in Phoenix. Appreciate what you DO have! read more

I was eager to try this place after reading several good reviews.. Must say I'm pretty disappointed. After a day of school orientation and car shopping I was eager for pastry heaven. My bf and I ordered various pastries and a soft cresent pretzel to try. I was not blown away by a single one. The pretzel was okay. It did taste authentic, but nothing I'd ever go out of my way for. The cheese danish was lack luster and heavy. You could barely taste the cream cheese in it and it was doused with an obnoxious amount of powdered sugar. The macaroon was not stellar. I was extremely disappointed in that, since so many people swear by those things. Kind of a cool store, I like the authenticly german selection, however all of it is overpriced by a landslide and is scarcely displayed. Oh how I wish Old Heidelberg was closer to home, maybe we should move! We ventured out for lunch today and as we were heading home I noticed Old Heidelberg. Having been here before it was a must stop on the way home. Their freshly baked breads are absolutely fantastic. No plain old mushy white bread for this boy. I prefer hearty breads with flavor. Of course what turned started out as a stop for a couple loaves of bread turned into cookies, dessert and some great German sausages. Their bread selection includes Rye, Sunflower and another one I can't recall. You can get the bread sliced or unsliced. Pretzel Rolls are to die for plus they have a great selection of German Sausage from Stigelmeier Sausage Company in Wheeling, IL. I really enjoy the baked goods from Old Heidelberg. The brezels are very authentic and Delicious - take it from a native German - they are very good. The bread is good but not great. I am not sure if they bake the bread in house or order it in, but all of the breads I have purchased there do not taste freshly baked - still good - but not same morning baked fresh taste :) The little grocery store has plenty of authentic German groceries and the selection is fantastic. The one thing are the prizes, they are super high. All in all it is a great place and I wish I lived closer so I could stop by more often. read more

I think I was transported back to my early childhood the first time I had one of Old Heidelberg's Kaiser rolls. I may have even gotten a little misty-eyed. It tasted JUST like the ones I used to go and get from the bakery every morning with my Oma during the summers I spent in Bavaria. I still get a little giddy every time I walk in and discover something new or rediscover an old favorite. Take the Erdnuss Flips for example- they are like puffed Cheetos, but peanut butter flavored. It takes a moment to adjust to a texture you associate with cheese, but with the "wrong" taste. But once you get over that- boy, have you ever set yourself on the path to addiction. It is truly bizarre to me that the Christmas chocolates currently in stock have exactly the same wrappers they did 30+ years ago. I used to pride myself on my unsentimentality, and scoffed at tradition. Now look at me... Besides the Kaiser rolls, the rye bread (yea! no seeds!) and the soft pretzels are fantastic. There is usually a small selection of pastries, and a widely varying selection of jams, other canned and jarred items, candy, toiletry items (the German Nivea cream is different and better-of course!- than the Nivea cream commonly sold in the States), mixes (such as potato dumpling), baking powders, gravies, cookies, and noodles. They also have a refrigerated case with some lunch meats and sausages, usually some imported butter (so worth the price) and occasionally some cheeses. Sometimes they do run low, but they explained to me once that they are often at the whim of their suppliers. They are closed Sundays and Mondays. There's three things that I absolutely ensure that I do when I get lucky enough to travel to Germany for work - German coffee, Ritter Sports and fresh pretzels (yeah, ok weiss-bier and wurst as well!) All of which I can get authentic versions of at OHB. Funny enough, my last trip to Munich I stopped in a grocery store at Rosenheimer Platz to satisfy my craving, and sure enough the same brands of coffee (Dallmyr, etc.) that I can get there, you can find here. Add on top of that a fresh pretzel or two, chased by Ritter Sport candy bars in German language and off you go! At holiday time, it looks like you can get some authentic Nuremberg gingerbread cookies, marzipan treats as well as lots of different Stollen choices. I pass by this place every single day on my way to and from work. For months and months I kept telling myself I had to go in and check it out. Well that day finally came last Saturday and I'm SO happy I finally did. I've been lucky enough to actually travel to Heidelberg, Germany and while I was there I had the best pretzels I've ever had in my life. I love a good pretzel and have been looking for an authentic German pretzel to enter my life yet again...but at a much closer distance. The Old Heidelberg Bakery does just that. When I walked in, I immediately smelled and noticed the large bin of freshly baked pretzels and pretzel buns. I was in aroma heaven. Then my eye caught a glimpse of their pretzel croissant. Are you kidding me?! A PRETZEL CRIOSSANT? I nearly shouted in the store before my boyfriend gently touched my shoulder to calm my excitement and bring me back to Earth. The stars aligned for me in that moment. It's buttery, flakey, AND has the saltiness of a pretzel. I could eat one every day if possible. They also have several other loaves of freshly baked bread to choose from. Although I didn't buy it, several other customers came in to purchase their Sunflower bread. I will be heading back there soon to try and buy my own loaf! They also have other delectable pastries to choose from. Besides their baked goods, they have sausages and bratwursts to take home. Very disappointed with my purchases on Friday. I have been coming here for quite a few years now. I ordered 24 rolls, a dozen pretzel crescents and loaf of rye for a family Christmas Eve party. The cost was $70.01. My mom bought the same things in Tucson from the German bakery for $33. Every year we have brotchen breads and cold cuts. The brotchen was weirdly stale like they forgot an ingredient or something. Ended up throwing away 18 rolls and not a single person finished their sandwich with brotchen. The rye was also stale but not as weird as the brotchen. The pretzel crescents were very good like always but didn't have enough for 22 people. Luckily I had brought some rye bread and rolls from Baked in Pinetop to cover every one. This bakery is a bit of a drive for me but I always stopped by when I m in the area. Hope this was just an off week for them but I'll give them another chance. Also all the reviews about them being rude and expensive are true but their breads usually made up for that. read more

Ummmm. No. Big Lots is a corporation that buys major bulk at discount and close to expiration. Can't compare...can say that as a small business - OHGB isn't out of line on their pricing. I love this place! I am from the Heidelberg area and I could not find the same quality of baked goods that one can get in Germany here in America. However, their strudel, pretzels and rolls are spot on!
