Out does your typical Blue Moon and Shocktop beers. Bourbon Bay Honey Lager. Just did a sample of it. Had to say, YES! Smell of bourbon in the beginning, finish with a smooth tasting beer. Stopped in on a whim to try the beers and we're totally overwhelmed. The beers were amazing. We didn't eat, but the food looked really good. Loved the old school atmosphere with tons of ambiance. The staff, although they were extremely busy, was amazingamazingly friendly. Yahoozie for this awesome restaurant! I am a vegetarian, and was having a very difficult time finding any vegetarian options while on vacation recently. I found this place, which offered several options for me, including a delicious veggie burger and sweet potato fries, both perfectly prepared and delicious. And the staff was so nice and friendly. Will return with my husband, a master brewer. He will really appreciate their award-winning brews as well as their delicious food. Also, it's very clean, comfortable, and the adorable, historic decor was very cool. Highly recommend this place for lunch or dinner. We walked in and the sign said to seat yourself. There were no clean tables so we sat at a dirty one and put the dirty glasses to the corner of the table to show that we were new customers. After 15 bartender/server came over and rudely asked if we just sat down and then berated is for sitting at a dirty table. She didn't ask if we wanted a drink. Old Man River Brewing has delicious food as well as a good selection of beer on tap from other breweries. They said they were still waiting to get their beer finished as well as get their government permit for selling alcohol when I went to visit them, so I was not able to try any of their homemade beer. I sat outside on their patio with family which was nice because the weather cooperated for us. I liked their interior and patio decor. The waiter and bartender were very kind and friendly. We ate lunch there and the food was delicious. They were out of gluten free wraps so I got a gluten-free chicken sandwich and I was very happy. I was told by family that the burgers were delicious as well. I definitely plan to stop back and try out this brewery again once it gets its' own beer on tap. read more

Stopped at Old Man River for dinner during our mini weekend getaway! You can find this place in the cute downtown of McGregor. We were greeted when we walked in and told to seat ourselves. There were a few other tables filled but not many, so we chose a table in the middle. I expected it to be busy during dinner rush but larger groups began to arrive as we got our food. The walls featured pictures of steamboats, old fishing rods, American flags, and craft beer decor. There was country music playing which wasn't terrible. One of the cool gimmicks was an old steamboat door they have. The waitress was friendly but the service was long periods of waiting unsure if they would come for our order or bring a drink that was ordered. It seemed like they had limited staff to accommodate the groups there. My boyfriend ordered one of their craft beers, paddleboat. They did not have a cocktail menu but a had a full bar. I decided on a classic Moscow Mule but they had to be reminded to bring one. The Moscow Mule was made well and brought in a copper cup, which is key. My boyfriend enjoyed the home brewed beer. You must get the sweet potato fries! These were thick, crunchy, and some of the best I have ate. The pork sandwich was the perfect combination of sauce and pork not making the bun soggy by the end of the meal. My boyfriend liked his burger, but especially the sweet potato fries. We like to think of ourselves as sweet potato fry connoisseurs wherever we go! The kitchen staff was accommodating to no cheese on the burger and subsisting pickles for cole slaw on the pork sandwich. When we got the check the drinks weren't on there so we asked. She forgot but decided not to add on drinks because we waited longer than we should've. Overall, the food was delicious but don't expect to rush in and out. Absolutely delicious Fish Fry! The homemade breading on the fish is light, crispy and delicious! The meal is served with a HOT loaf of bread baked at Old Man River, Spring salad with strawberry vinaigrette dressing, and two soups, onion soup and lentil bean with ham. Service was fast and pleasant with owner's personally asking if we needed anything else with our dinner. The restaurant owners have great personalities and shared their stories about building the restaurant and how they make the food there. The restaurant is decorated with local river items and personal charm. We liked the fish so much we drove back 50+ miles the next evening to have it again! Not impressed with service, waiter brought us our beers and then proceeded to tell us he didn't know which beer was which so we had to figure it out on our own. After reading the reviews it seems the biggest struggle here is service. We had super polite service and pretty quick. Not instant, but when you obviously have freshly made food in front of you you understand why it took a little time. Our fries and wedges were crispy, burger cooked exactly to order, pizza crispy crust gooey cheese, so officially yummy. We enjoyed our beers, don't know if they are locally brewed. We each ordered a ribeye medium rare. They came rare and barely warm. Normally, by the time you finish eating a ribeye you have a plate full of juice. Not in this case- almost a dry plate. I thought the service was great however the cooks in the back may not have a clue. I ordered a hamburger well done when I received it had pink RAW meat in the middle. I ordered a children's hamburger and it too has pink. They offered to cook the hamburger but I am not that idiot that send food back. I politely asked for something that could be made quick. This place was so awesome!we were visiting the area from Chicago to spend a couple of days hiking with our dog. The server and manager working were so great-- very accommodating and friendly. We sat outside and enjoyed great conversation with our server about beer, hiking and living in different states. My parents had been here a few years ago and described their meal as one of the best they had ever had. Several years hence we returned with a family group, and unfortunately couldn't relive the experience. That's not to say the meal was bad. And there were some factors working against us. But it certainly won't be going in the Greatest Gustatory Hits of my life, let's put it that way. We did have a group of 9 people, but that was really piddling considering the fact that when we walked in the door they were expecting a reunion of 42 people. But they were able to seat us, so with some trepidation we took a seat on the closed-in patio. Our waitress was brand-new, as she immediately (and somewhat defensively) warned us, but she did a fine job, though it was her duty to inform us several times of some ill tidings. The special was tenderloin steak...which they were out of. (?? It was still quite early in the evening...you might want to stop advertising it.) They couldn't make the grilled onions that my parents had had last time (and are listed on the menu). In short, there were several "no"/"we can't"s throughout the meal that got a little discouraging. In lieu of the tenderloin, most of us got the ribeye, which was tasty, though the cooking was wildly uneven: my dad and I ordered ours cooked to the same doneness, and his came out much redder than mine. Things moved very slowly, perhaps gratis the clan of 42 that rolled in. At least this gave our crowd a chance to chat, and chomp on the appetizer of cheese curds (lightly fried and dunked in bbq or ranch -- the latter was better). The restaurant is very attractive: high ceilings, light wood, bright lighting. It was a nice evening to be seated on the back patio, and the benefit of the screen was a boon as there has been a plague of gnats of late, which would have made for most undesirable dining companions. Overall, McGregor is a very cute little town and this is nice dining option. I feel like the stars did not quite align for us on this visit but that it has the capacity to be better, based on my parents' past experience. We travel through MacGregor quite often while enroute to Wisconsin on the other side of the river from MacGregor. When we do we make it a point to stop in MacGregor, generally for lunch, as we always make a significant effort to support local businesses whenever we travel. Stopped in the Old Man River and Brewery for lunch and sadly, left quite disappointed. This was in December and the place was absolutely freezing inside to the point we had to keep our coats on to eat. Despite being the only diners in the place our order was mixed up the first time (incorrect sides), but the server did take both orders back and fixed them. The steak sandwich appeared to be of the partially pre-cooked, processed-type rather than prepared onsite from scratch. Even if not, it tasted like it. Bland and totally uninspiring. The Rueben was fine but nothing special. Also, cash only, no credit cards. Finally, and perhaps most disappointing of all, was the person who I assume to be the owner, in a futile attempt to be funny, came off instead as sarcastic and rude, as he openly mocked us for simply wanting to watch the train pass through town before coming inside to eat. "What, first time you've ever seen a train?" Quite offensive. No, not the first time I've ever seen a train but certainly the last time we will ever stop at your place. read more

The beer and drinks here were awesome. Homemade beer for my husband, Moscow Mule for me (they put something extra in it that really makes it pop!). The pizza we ordered was really something special. I believe it was a chicken bacon ranch. But it also had fresh basil and a creamy sauce on top. We sat up at the bar and had a great conversation with the owners. They both made whole experience fun! We even got a tour of their newly renovated temporary rentals on the top floor of the building (they are large and gorgeous). I don't know where they advertise the rentals (maybe just call). One apartment housed 6 people and the other 8. Full kitchens and laundry room in both. We would definitely return here to drink, eat and sleep! read more

The food tasted good, my complaint is that you get charged $2.00 for a Walmart brand bottle water, when ordering water. looking at some other tables the had actual glasses of water. Pretty sad that you can pay for an 18.00 sandwich but have to drink water out of the cheapest water bottles made, this restaurant is no hotdog stand! We stopped at Old Man River a few weeks ago while visiting my daughter in Prairie du Chien, WI. It was our first time there, but it won't be our last. They have a nice outdoor seating area, but we chose to sit inside due to the heat. The decor was charming, with adequately spaced tables and an inviting bar. However, what matters most in a restaurant is not the ambiance, but the food and service. And Old Man River gets 5 stars for both. Our server was very knowledgeable and made excellent menu suggestions. My husband and I had seafood, while the others in our party has a burger and wrap. Everything was delicious and cooked to perfection! The beer I sampled from their brewery was too notch. The menu is quite extensive and I wish we had been able to sample more items. The appetizer selection was particularly appealing to me. As for dessert, the owner fixes everything from scratch and it varies frequently. I had a mouthwatering piece of pineapple upside down cake that rendered me nearly unable to breathe. This was a late lunch, and I was so stuffed I couldn't eat the rest of the day. If you're anywhere near McGregor, be sure to stop at the Old Man River. You'll be glad you did. read more
