I went to this place for the first time yesterday, Saturday, August 8 specifically to have the Prime Rib ... i had saw the review by the IOWA gallivant online for this particular item at this restaurant I arrived about 4 PM was taken to a table immediately. Was seated by a very nice individual and was given a menu and asked what I would like to drink. I ordered the prime rib, medium rare more towards rare. It's a queen size is what it goes by on the menu you get the salad bar and a type of potato that you want. I ordered the mashed potatoes with garlic . I had the raspberry tea, so I went to the salad bar, which was very well stocked and looked very enticing. Everything was very good off the salad bar that I enjoyed. Before I was finished with my salads my entree arrived. The prime rib was cooked to perfection it came with au jus and horseradish. The Prime Rib was very high-quality very good tasting beef, the au jus was very tasty not too much sodium and enhanced the prime rib. The potatoes were remarkable. Very tasty. Just the right amount of garlic needed. My waiter was Bre She did a fantastic job so I was very pleased with this outing even though I had to drive almost 2 hours to get to this establishment in McGregor I would go back and take some friends along so they can enjoy it also in the future. We stayed at the Airbnb upstairs and enjoyed their Friday night buffet our first night in town. The staff was super helpful in recommending things to do in town and in the area. The room was EXTREMELY unique, the floors appear to be original, the porch is a delight to sit outside and watch a sunset! Terrific deck with comfy seating overlooking the river. Mr. Yelp got the Backwater burger- amazing. I got the pepperoni flatbread pizza. Just left this place. It is so authentic inside. I believe the wood floors are probably original to the building from back in the late 1800's. They only had one waiter who was bombarded with people all at one time. He did a good job keeping up with everything. Our food was great! I had a patty melt and my husband had a pizza. We thought they were both very good. I definitely will eat here again next time we make it back to McGregor. read more

Really cool old building with what looks like an original floor. Had the Western burger which was on toasted bread and was very good. The fries are battered and were excellent. The tater barrel appetizer are potato croquettes, very light and fluffy, well worth a try. The waitress was friendly and attentive. Highly recommend. read more

This place was awesome, our party ordered the catfish, Walleye, shrimp and bbq sandwich. We had fries, mashed potatoes and squeaky cheese. Everything was cooked perfectly. We were visiting McGregor for the weekend and spent our first night at the bar having drinks, and decided to try the food for dinner on our 2nd night, tonight (I am actually writing this from the table bc I am so inspired and impressed). A run-down if everything we ate: -beef ribs -the trio (broasted chicken, brisket, beef ribs) -pulled pork sandwich w/ loaded mash -ribeye -half rack pork ribs The consensus amongst our group is that Andy (chef) is the most talented bbq man in the region. Seriously, so good! Personally, I have never had better ribs. Also, Andy's wife Kari was our bartender/server, and could not have been more welcoming and fun. My wife and I stopped in for lunch on Saturday and thought how nice the place had stayed with the authentic way it was built.My wife had the hand pressed patty melt on texas toast and crispy fries and I had the special hot beef sandwich with potatoes and gravy. My review is based on the hotel part of this establishment. My girlfriend booked a room for us as we were traveling through the area. In the pictures the rooms looked great. Unfortunately, we got a different experience. When we walked in, I found it odd that there was a fly swatter in the room. After a few hours, I quickly understood the purpose for one. The lamps were dusty, the bathtub was dirty, there was a moldy shower curtain, a spider in the corner of the room that could've been alive or dead (it was questionable) & the room had clumps of dust behind the furniture. The main bed within itself was very uncomfortable. The frame was like sleeping on an army spring bed that rested on a hammock with a mattress that was ridiculously light & lumpy. The outside furniture had tons of spider webs & bugs attached to them. The only positive to the experience that we had was the woman who checked us in. Was it worth $100? Not in the slightest. I've stayed in cleaner rooms for half the price. Suggestions; 1, Get some bug zappers outside of the rooms. 2, Drag a vacuum upstairs & actually clean the rooms. 3, Sweep the outside sitting area of bugs/spider webs. 4, Clean the outside furniture & clean out the cigarette buckets for each guest. Each of these things take minutes yet make a lasting impression on guests. read more

The more time goes by that we're away from this restaurant, the worse I feel about eating there. Cheese curds- probably half didn't actually have cheese in them. They were out of half of what we actually wanted and weren't able to order it. My husbands tap beer was warm- the waitress should have known that just by bringing it over and feeling the glass. You can tell the owner and the kitchen staff don't get along by watching them and it shows in their food. Won't be back. read more

The pulled pork was well done and smoked. It was a big hit with everyone on sandwiches and bbq nachos. The French dip was delicious. Try the fries with garlic sea salt. Waitstaff was very can-do. One of our party had a shellfish allergy, and they were knowledgeable about what foods might have cross contamination with shrimp and immediately offered to cook fries or a sandwich separately as well as a variety of alternative sides. A group of 6 of us were camping at Pikes Peak State park and stopped in "Backwoods" for a drink & appetizers. My husband asked about a beer and the very young waitress said, "I don't know nothing about beer." and then just stood there. The proper response should have been, "I'm not sure BUT LET ME FIND OUT FOR YOU." 2 of us ordered sodas and we watched as our waitress put her finger on the end of the straw (WHERE YOUR MOUTH GOES) to shove it into the glass. Then she brought them over to the table with her hands all over the top rim of the glass (WHERE YOUR MOUTH GOES) I had asked for a lemon for mine so this handsy waitress went behind the bar, picked up a lemon slice WITH HER FINGERS, and walked it over to the table---not plate or napkin---JUST IN HER HAND. I DID NOT DRINK MY COKE. Next, while clearing the table, holding dirty plates in her arm, she kept leaning over next to my head, brushing the dirty plates into my head. Pulled pork had some good bark on it but it was really dry. Adding a generous amount of BBQ helped but thought it should be more moist. However, it was hard to concentrate on the food while constantly swatting flies and mosquitoes and this was inside the restaurant. read more
