My husband and I went last weekend to celebrate our 10th anniversary. We had never been to this restaurant and we were thrilled to find a restaurant downtown that offered free convenient parking right across the street. I had mentioned to the hostess when I made our reservation that it was our anniversary. When we arrived we were immediately greeted with, "Happy Anniversary" from the two smiling girls behind the front desk. We were seated at a cozy booth, (side by side), along a brick wall and when we opened our menus, at the top, it said, "Happy 10th Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. (insert name)! We felt like celebrities and were able to take a copy home as a keepsake. I ordered the Salmon with crab meat and an sweet orange sauce. It was so tasty!! My husband had the special filet Mignon with a crab cake and loved it! The meat was perfectly cooked and the crab cakes were the BEST we ever had. The dessert was great as well. We shared the Chocolate Cake and had to wrap up the rest of it because it was too big and too good not to take home. Our server was AWESOME and catered to our every need. Everything else? Ws disgustingly good. Warned in advance, the restaurant had pulled a specially-printed menu in honor of my date's birthday, which is very sweet, and our waiter was particularly enthusiastic in his description of the specialties. He chose filet oscar style, which was cooked to perfection, and couldn't be happier with the delectable crab and tender asparagus spears. I, perhaps the more adventurous of the two of us, can now cross lobster thermidor off my culinary to-do list, though the succulent dish will most certainly find its way across my plate again with that example as a first try. Brandy and cream and cheese and suchlike are excellent to begin with, but the succulent lobster, enrobed in decadent sauce, is mind-bendingly good and while rich enough I couldn't have eaten more, I still -wanted- it. Also delightful, in an entirely different manner, were the roasted brussel sprouts ordered as a side. I wavered hard on the fifth star for this place, I truly did, and it honestly lost out on it almost entirely over the dessert- not that it wasn't tasty, but that it just didn't wow me, and that failure stood out against an otherwise excellent experience. I am, in the end, heavily swayed by a good dessert... or a lackluster one, and alas, this one was closer to the latter. The cake [comped for the birthday boy] was tasty but uninspired and my own sweet was rather forgettable- enough so that i can't really remember what it was, in fact. I will absolutely return, though. Pretty terrible experience. Booked a month in advance for an outside table as we had looked up best patios in Richmond and this came up. Got 'bumped' for a wedding party that was booked after our reservation. No apology or comment about it when we got to restaurant. Food is just not good all around. Best thing were the raw oysters. Steaks are good quality but ruined with their inability to cook or season them properly. Crab cakes have lump crab but have no favor and tasted like the we're old. Ahi tuna tasted fresh but was smothered in a mayonnaise like dressing. The fried shrimp were apparently good. Congratulations, you get the long john silver award read more

Let me me start off by saying my wife and I have not been out to eat very much due to Covid. When we walked into this Bookbinder's you could tell they were taking all safety precautions - masks, gloves, distanced tables, staff were cleaning constantly too. John and his team did an excellent job making us feel safe while enjoying one the best meals we've had a long time (probably since we were here last!). The bread, mushrooms, and wedge salad were delicious (as always). My wife got the sesame crusted yellowfin tuna and I got the steak and crab. We split an order of lobster Mac and cheese. The entrees and side were nothing short of amazing! Everything was cooked to perfection!! John stopped by and said hello as well, such a nice, personal touch! After dinner we ordered dessert - chocolate cake and my fave, creme brûlée. A shout out to our waiter as well, who's name unfortunately escapes me. Be the restaurant at 7:16pm, I told the hostess that I need a table for 4, was told that the table would be available around 8:15 pm , means need to wait for 1 hour for it , since we still have a long way to the hotel that we booked at Fayetteville,NC. I try to leave but kids said hungry. Then stay and wait. Around 7:35 pm was told the table is ready, but the hostess didn't bring us to the table,we walked in but couldn't find table then a waiter send us back to hostess, she brings us to a private room at least have 6 empty tables available here, anyway, the hostess is not friendly and not care about we were there. I ordered a dozen oysters, clam chowder and entrees is sesame yellowfin tuna , the oysters were so fresh, the clam chowder is good, and tuna is just okay. Kids are loved the hot breads since so hungry , asked for a refill. Arrived at the restaurant at our designated reservation time and was greeted by the hostess and immediately taken to our table. Within five minutes the restaurant manager came to our table and said she hated to have this awkward conversation with us. She proceeded to accuse me of having thrown up in the entryway of the restaurant. When I said it was preposterous and had absolutely not happened and that she should check her cameras she left. We then ordered drinks and an appetizer as well as our entrées. The waitress came over a few minutes later and asked me to go into the hallway so that I could receive an apology from the manager for being wrongly accused of throwing up in the entry way. When I saw the manager she said that she had checked the video and that my friend had actually thrown up and not me. The manager didn't even have the decency to come to the table and ask us to leave but rather asked me to inform the other guests that we were being asked to leave. As we were leaving we requested to see the video and upon viewing my friend had briefly pulled her mask off and on her face to breathe and bent over slightly. She obviously had not vomited. This all took place in less than five seconds. I have never been treated so rudely in my entire life and to add insult to injury the manager claimed she had just lost her father due to Covid hence the tight restrictions but I found a video on Facebook where the entire staff of the restaurant were having a meeting unmasked on that very afternoon. Honestly, this place was so amazing I created a yelp account just to tell everyone about it. My boyfriend and I went here for his 27th birthday and lets just say we were completely blown away. For starters we had the Oyster Rockefeller ( the best i have EVER taste) & the crab cakes. Immediately we knew this was the place to be. Before we could order our entree we received a special visit from the owner who was SOOOOO kind. He literally had a end depth conversation with us ( we probably were holding him up lol) , then he visited other guest. LOVE LOVE the customer service. I loved how personal it felt. I had the pork chops and was amazed at how wonderful they were & the peaches were the perfect touch. My boyfriend had the Surf & Turf and continues to say how perfectly is was cooked and seasoned (he needed nothing with it). The atmosphere , the vibe, the staff, the food, EVERYTHING was remarkable. We drove down to Richmond to celebrate our son's 21st birthday! Our son chose this place based on the reviews and of course his love of fine steaks and seafood. Our waiter, Dave was attentive and prompt to our requests while dining. Andre, one of the managers stopped by our table to ask about how our meals were. He also shared some interesting history of Richmond, telling us how the downtown buildings were once old tobacco houses known as "Tobacco Row." Then the owner John Taxin stopped at our table to ask us if we were enjoying our evening and if we were there for a special occasion. When we shared it was our son's 21st! He announced " I have a great gift for a 21 year old!" and then disappeared into the other room. Meanwhile we enjoyed a slice of birthday cake, compliments of Bookbinders! Then Mr. Taxin appeared with a Bookbinders T-shirt along with a handwritten birthday message!Awwww! All steaks ordered were cooked to perfection and tender in such a way that each bite melted in your mouth! The Shrimp Bisque, along with the New England Clam Chowder are also highly recommended ! Did an online booking for an 11th anniversary for my wife and I. The website only had an opening for 8:45 which was a little late for us. Someone called the next day to confirm our reservation and I asked if there was something earlier. she said she had a 4:45 opening. not sure if it was open or if she squeezed us in. we arrived and were greeted and seated right away in the president's room. The tables were nicely set and there was a mix of relaxing yet kind of upbeat classical and jazz music which set a nice atmosphere. They had our names on the menus which was a pleasant surprise for my wife as well as the complimentary glass of prosecco. Our server was very nice and well on top of things at all times. We had oysters to start. I had had oysters in a lot of places and these were definitely top-notch. My wife had a shrimp salad with huge shrimp and I had a giant crap cake that was pure crab meat no fillers. I would definitely recommend and I will be returning. Do not be fooled by the name. This place is of the five star quality you would hope to find in the pristine Shockoe Bottom. We've been looking for this type of gem for a while and finally found it. My wife and I were greeted enthusiastically by the hostess and were immediately offered to have our coat checked. you can't help but to notice the live lobster pool as soon as you walk in. Poor lobsters. At least they get to get eaten with dignity. We began our course with an appetizer of escargot. We're snail snobs so our expectations were high. They were delicious. Smothered in a charred mushroom deglazed with red wine and sheeted one melted butter, delicious! I had the cowboy steak I believe, medium, because a steak any other way is uncivilized. My wife had the apple pork chops. Dee-licious! Moist, baked, bone in pork chop topped with finger sized fried apple slices. Make sure you eat them both together to be transported back to your grandmothers home on the farm. We accompanied our meal with a lobster macaroni dish. I lived in Massachusetts for a while and I haven't had any lobster that can even compare since I've left, so I was a bit skeptical. It was served hot with flaky white lobster in a white cheddar sauce. I get like a third grader eating that Mac and cheese. The sides are shareable by the way. Definitely recommend this place. Went to Bookbinders last week with family and friends. There were 6 in our party. Had not been there in many years and won't go back. My wife ordered the Ribeye which was very fatty. My swordfish was tasty with a nicely flavored sauce but rather on the small portion side. My son ordered 2 1/2 lb lobster which there was NO WAY that size. I know lobster and used to live near Maine. The calamari appetizer was rubbery. My cousin ordered chocolate cake for dessert and returned it after one bite. The waiter was uninterested in being there and why should he be since parties over 5 are required to pay a 20% tip. Our bill was $280 for 4 people and one person was a vegetarian and only had a salad. While a nice atmosphere inside, we will NEVER go back. read more

When the end result of a meal is the family debating hours later whether the manager was smarmy or snarky, it wasn't a good experience. This was our second visit to Bookbinders and will be our last. In summary, a party of four, there to celebrate a birthday, the meal started off well. Cocktails and appetizers were done well, and the wine selection is what you would expect at a steak and seafood house. Two people in the party ordered steaks and both were overdone (not the reason for the rating). One person ordered medium rare and received medium well, the other person ordered medium and received well well well done. Each of us made one cut into our respective steaks and sent both back immediately. What happened next is the reason that I'm even leaving a review. A man, who I can only assume is a manager (had on a suit, shorter in stature, lots of black hair) brought the medium well steak back to the table with a new cut in it and asked my brother "you mean you want it cooked less than this?" To which he received a reply of "yes." We were a bit shocked that he had the gall to do that for multiple reasons. The same individual then brought the new steaks, and what happened at this point was beyond the pale. Tone, verbiage, look on his face, pick one... when asking us to cut into the steaks the tone was condescending. Words were fine, tone was not. The look on his face was a smirk? Whatever it was, not appropriate. It gets "better" this manager then makes comments about the initial steaks that we sent back, at that point I'd had enough. I simply said he ordered medium rare and received medium well, I ordered medium and received well done hoping that was the end of it. It was not, this individual then makes more comments about the initial steaks.... I repeated myself verbatim. Here's the thing, sometimes kitchens make a mistake. Just fix the mistake don't try to push the mistake off on someone else and make snide comments to your patrons... especially on a topic (steak temperatures) that is basically universal in the US. The "funny" part is that my second steak was the wrong again, this time to the other extreme. A majority of it was rare. Rare to the point it may have still been mooing. I didn't send it back, I ate around the edges (which was medium rare) and brought the rest home to cook myself. The person we assume was one of the managers ruined our dining experience. read more

With plenty of new and interesting restaurants, with passionate, bearded hipsters pushing biscuits and burritos, it's a hard sell to pay $$$ and go to an old Richmond classic, of fear it may be tired and dying (as its hand-coded HTML 1.0 website suggests). Regretfully, we brought out-of-town friends here for dinner. An eyesore of a lobster tank greets us as we enter. Staff appear pleasant and the ambiance is uninspired but nice. It's great to be in a quiet restaurant for a change. Curiously, our large party was informed a few minutes after being seated that the kitchen will be closing. How bizarre... why take reservations after 8:30 if you can't keep the kitchen open? We rushed to put our orders in, I didn't really get a chance to see the full menu. Our server manages to spill cocktail sauce on one of our friend's new dress and couldn't even feign apology. She proceeds to bring our friend's food even though she's noticeably absent from the table, cleaning her dress in the bathroom. Food goes to the wrong people. A hair makes it onto one of the entrees and a member of our party excuses himself to let the staff know who proceed to do nothing about it. The owner, however, appeared palpably disappointed we didn't have a great meal and it seems he took our criticism seriously. The food was overall quite good, cocktails are great. $15 Lobster mac and cheese, while delicious, is curiously light on lobster. At this level of dining, there is no excuse for poor service. Our server, while not hostile, was aloof and cold. She looked like she was at the end of a long day and knew she would, without effort, make the automatic 20% tacked on to our bill. Sloppy. We had so many options, it's a shame we brought our friends here. The once-fine, old establishments of Richmond are officially under threat with young talented chefs injecting energy and creativity into the food scene. In that context, Bookbinders really needs to step it up. A lobster tank, white tablecloth, and a mandatory dress code is no substitute for lazy service. Will not return. read more

Ordered the filet, came out full of fat and rough.. Longhorn type quality. Sent it back. Waited 15mins with my soup getting cold, I like to eat all my food at once. They brought out a new steak and new potatoes but not anymore soup.(I still had the soup sitting on the table 3/4's full) New steak was better, still not top notch, lacked flavor and was a tad too rough to be a filet. I took my mother and 13-year-old son to eat at Bookbinder's on 2/17/20 and we had one of the best meals we've had in a long time. The food and service were impeccable. I'm really picky as I've worked in some of the top steakhouses and I had been wanting to try Bookbinder's for a while. We started with the Cajun Seared Tuna. Jeremy, our server, reassured us that it was his favorite appetizer. It was amazing to the point that we had to get another one since my son gobbled up the first. I got the Petite Filet Mignon cooked a perfect Med Rare and my son got the Cowboy Ribeye also cooked Med Rare. My mom got the Fried Shrimp which were huge and butterflied. My son ate her Shoestring Fries (came with the shrimp) and my mom and I split a Baked Potato. We finished with the Chocolate Soufflé which reminded me of the inside of a Lindor Truffle. It came with Vanilla Ice cream on the side. I can't remember the last time I couldn't stop thinking about my meal and talking about it as much as I did this one. Jeremy was very professional while also being friendly and welcoming. The manager stopped by to make sure we enjoyed everything. We can't wait to return and ask for Jeremy again. This place is really close to my apartment. I just wish I was made of money so I could eat there everyday. The food is great and has a nice ambience plus the bartenders there make a darn good drinks. If you got the money and want a nice place for a good date night (meaning good food and good company) then I say head on over to this place. Your stomach wont be disapointed despite what your wallet tells you. If you like to try different things like I do, try the snapping turtle soup. Its good and tastes almost like a beef stew. The service is great and the dress code is well not dressy I would say but you want to wear a nice collared and pants (sorry ladies, I dont know what is the equivalent of that for your gender). I tend to err on the side of a little dressier in a place like this but if your one of those people that think its ok to go out in public wearing basically pj's..... just stay home and rethink your life. Very disappointed! My husband and I read all the great reviews while visiting from out of town and decided to make reservations. As a African American couple just being seated by an excellent waiter might I add, the owner of the restaurant is making his rounds. He stops at the table and makes a comment which disturbed both of us which was "Did the two of you buy those outfits for tonight" as if we can't afford nice things! Then goes on to make comments because the both of us have an iPhone 6! So my husband speaks with him (in private) and politely states that the comments he made were offensive and the owner starts to get loud while speaking with him. We politely exited the restaurant. Old Original Bookbinder's is a traditional special occasion restaurant--dark booths, steak- and seafood-heavy menu, a la carte sides, and uber professional servers.On their website, they're very clear about their dress code--business casual or dressy for the main dining area. More casually dressed guests can dine in the lounge portion of the old tobacco warehouse. If you're going to spend a pretty penny (menu items are definitely on the pricier side), then why not go all out with your attire? I say dress up to enjoy the full experience. Our server, Melissa, was wonderful. She was very polite and remembered all our special requests (cook the scallops through, medium rare for both steaks, etc.). The servers at Old Original Bookbinder's seem to all know the perfect balance for checking on patrons, not coming by too often or too infrequently. Towards the end of our meal, Melissa came by to clear away the crumbs and ready our table for dessert. She provided helpful suggestions through out and also clearly knew the regular menu and the specials very well. Also, she knew it was my mom's birthday dinner so she brought out dessert with a candle for blowing out. My mom said her filet mignon was a tad underseasoned but cooked just right. Then again, you're hearing this from a lady who enjoys her steak with Tabasco sauce...always...Hubby loved his ancho chile-kissed rib eye. Though he has never been to South America, he imagined that this is what an Argentine steak would taste like. In either case, he said it was prepared well and very flavorful. I had the diver scallops with the brussel sprouts and maple gastrique. This was an exemplary seafood dish, a great option for anyone who's a fan of shellfish. The scallops were meaty, still juicy despite being fully cooked (seared scallops can still be a little undercooked in the center), and well-seasoned. The gastrique was sweet but not overly so. For sides, we shared the mashed potatoes and the brussel sprouts. The red-skinned mashed potatoes were creamy and scrumptious. Brussel sprouts were roasted and slightly sweet and crisp around the edges. Both winning choices. Overall, Old Original Bookbinder's is an excellent choice for celebrating a birthday, anniversary, or any other event. Service is exemplary, and the food is delectable and elegantly presented. Old Original Bookbinder's serves traditional American food, so maybe not the best choice if you're looking for more adventurous, New American style eats. Also, vegetarian options are quite limited. There are no vegetarian entrees and only a handful of vegetarian sides. Vegan options are nonexistent. Clearly vegetarians and vegans are not the target audience so knowing this will help to curb your expectations. My husband and I went on May 13, 2013 for our anniversary dinner. The atmosphere is great - dark woods, exposed beams, rustic brick and nautical art (fish prints and such). We did have reservations and we were seated promptly. Our waiter was very friendly, and very helpful in helping us to accommodate our gluten allergy. The menu selection for gluten free was just as varied as the main menu and quite delicious. The food is fresh, not over-sauced and so very filling! Great presentation, great execution.
