The food was amazing! Staff was friendly & very accommodating! Our group got the schnitzel, walleye, ribeye, and the weekly game which was bison flank. I had a bite of everybody's and it was all phenomenal Our appetizers were clams, trout dip, and the corn and jalapeño fritters. Holy bananas, they were all amazing!!! Just reopened. Bad drinks. Fish and chips fish with bones in it ( beware for kids ordering) cold plate for one of our party. Completely Forgot one order. Had to wait 20 minutes to get it. Over cooked fries, terrible Coleslaw. Desert in a super small glass jar (?). People behind us were very unimpressed also. Messed up on their meals too. I know they are newly reopened but there is only a few entrees and they had a hard time getting orders correct. Host was snippy when other party asked her to check on their meal. Just overall not good. Disappointed because a lot of locals were hoping it would be a hit. . With all the mess ups the chefs never came to any tables. If I could give more stars, I would! We are locals and I have eaten everywhere in town and this was by far the best meal we have had here. The service was awesome...manager and chef came out to address us. We had crab cakes and the prime rib and it was amazing. And expensive, but I feel the value was there...and we spent more for quality than we have elsewhere. The atmosphere is just charming, cool old Montana. We were staying in the hotel and looked on yelp for a dinner spot. After reading through a bunch of the reviews for old ponytail, it looked like they hit a rough patch about a year ago but the recent reviews were good. So we gave it a try. Our server, Michael, was very attentive and friendly. We had the salmon toast as an appetizer which we recommend. I ordered the bison ribs which were fantastic - barely even needed a knife because the meat just fell off the bones- and my husband had the Wienerschnitzel which he also enjoyed. We asked about the chef and he wasn't there. We were impressed that the number 2&3 chefs did such a good job! read more

Service was awesome. Food was not so good. Five people in our party. Soup was cold for four people. Three ribeye steaks were ordered, two fish. Because of the very confusing menu one fish was ordered wrong and one fish was served cold. Steak was "aged" "maybe" tasted over seasoned and cheap. The entire meal reminded me of a cheap supper club. Again the service was amazing. But just eat in town. read more

OMG! What an excellent experience! We were early so our table had an amazing view of Rock Creek but that was nothing compared to the dinning experience we were about have. First our appetizer, I always order calamari when it's on the menu. The Calamari was the best I have every had. I ordered shrimp scampi and my wife walleye both were excellent. Rice pilaf and roasted vegetables were to die for. The grand finale was a phenomenal Huckleberry Creme brûlée. The restaurant is a short ride from Redlodge and should be a must on you list. We have occasionally enjoyed dining at this charming historic restaurant for decades but didn't realize it closed in 2020 and only reopened a couple weeks ago. We enjoyed a drink at the bar with some locals while we waited for a table. The menu is quite limited while they get things back up and going, but the locals at the bar raved about the buffalo chili and the stuffed mushrooms. My spicy chicken sandwich came with plenty of fresh arugula and was quite good. The limited staff is very enthusiastic and optimistic about bringing this iconic restaurant back to its former glory. read more

We stayed in Red Lodge and just happened to see this place on the way to our hotel. We walked in and were immediately greeted and treated like friends...by literally everyone! The staff were the most personable, polite, and attentive that I have ever seen. When I asked the waitress about the food she was knowledgeable and helpful. When the food came out, it was wonderful. The salad was all farm to table. It was presented well and tasted great. In observing the way the cook, owner, and waitresses acted, along with the food, you can tell that these people genuinely care about how the food looks, tastes, and how the customer feels about it. Never have I been to a restaurant where I was treated so pleasantly and had a meal that you could tell effort was put into. We will definitely go back if we are in Red Lodge again. After seeing the reviews my husband and I were looking forward a nice dinner unfortunately our experience was not good. We had to wait 20 minutes at the table before anyone even talked to us. Good thing we had stopped at the bar to get a glass of wine. The service was terrible. We were still hopeful that the meal would be great. It wasn't. A 14 oz, 38 dollar ribeye was 1/2 inch thick and well done when we ordered med rare. I hope this was just a bad night! read more

I appreciate the lack of an aesthetic update to this place. Its timely and old and very cozy. The thing I love about the OPD (you down with me!) is it is consistently good on all levels. I find myself in Red Lodge an average of every other year. the OPD consistently serves up some of the best steak in Red Lodge (Forget about the Carbon County Steakhouse) backed with great service, cool rustic location, and reasonable prices. read more

My husband and I, along with his brother and wife, stopped here for lunch, driving from Cody to Red Lodge on the Bear Tooth Highway. What a wonderful experience. The food was wonderful. Our hosts were fantastic, providing a history of the place. It is very interesting and well worth the stop. Beautiful setting on the creek. Log cabin was original and built on to several times. Plus the Beartooth Highway is a gorgeous ride. read more

Piney Dell has a great chef in Barry and wonderful atmosphere along Rock Creek up on the Beartooth. Servers are attentive and prompt. Love especially the Shrimp cocktail, Caesar Salad, artichoke crab soup, walleye crusted with panko, and the veal. Madi and Sydney are wonderful waiters and provide excellent service. My wife and I stayed at the Rock Creek resort and had the best meal at their restaurant since arriving in Montana a week ago. The restaurant has been here for many years and the food was delicious. The bartender made the perfect Negroni, which was a plus. The service was friendly and prompt. Kudos to the chef. read more

Stumbled into this restaurant tonight as we had booked a room at the Rock Creek Resort. We were hungry and started with perogies and the goat cheese appetizers- both were perfect. Mains were the spaetzle and meatballs, and Pepi's Wiener schnitzel. Both were quite good- though we had a bit too much to eat and didn't finish our plates. Great ambiance and good service- I would highly recommend dinner here! read more

The food was wonderful - small ribeye for one of us and the mushroom risotto. Apparently their longtime chef left last week and they are "struggling" said our waitress but we didn't find any problems at all. It was really tasty. The location on the creek is much beloved with the locals to the area and it very picturesque. Recommend all of you make your way to this place for a nice upscale dinner if you are in Red Lodge area. read more

Well, unfortunately, by updating my review I find that the old one disappeared. Too bad. It was a good review. In short, we spent over $200 for two on a dinner, and if they could have lined up all four courses at once it could not have been pushier. We were under constant pressure to hurry up and finish, so they could use the table again. I'm giving them a downgrade because, talking to people in town, we found that this "bum's rush" was typical of the restaurant, not a one time thing. If you want to have a fast food meal for two for $200+, this is the place for you. If you don't want to feel like the food is being shoved down your throat, don't go here. read more

This was the most amazing ending to our stay at rock creek resort! A homey welcoming cabin atmosphere with an amazing host (shout out to Jay!). This place was a dream in all honesty, and I wanted to stay forever. The bar was well priced and so was the amazing food! Chef Traeger *most likely spelled incorrectly* continues to perfect his craft and his menu. A glass of amazing whiskey for 12 dollars for the boyfriend and a wonderful chocolate creme brulee for me was the best way to end our quick trip up to red lodge! I highly recommend this little spot even if you aren't staying at the resort. read more

We went to this restaurant for brunch on Sunday. The location is out of town (past Red Lodge proper, on the way to Yellowstone), which may not be convenient for everyone. They only offer a buffet during their Sunday morning brunch, for $15/apiece, which is a great price. They had $3 mimosas as well--outstanding price! There was only one item on the buffet that I truly enjoyed--the eggs Benedict--but the people who came with me raved about the omelette and lemon poppy seed bread. After our meal, the server was unable to split our checks, which is something that always irritates me, but overall, this is a decent breakfast buffet for a good price. read more

The food quality was terrible. The steak was grossly undercooked and full of fat and gristle, the mushroom risotto was undercooked with hard rice. The nine dollar creme brûlée was topped with large decoration sugar instead of ultra fine therefore not brûlée-d and crisp. The service was fine, but it was a little too relaxed. When we emailed them to let them know how disappointed we were, they never replied an it's been a month. I got a better steak at Montana Ale Works in Bozeman for half the price. read more

First trip to red lodge and thought we would stop in as it was close to where we were staying. The service wasn't amazing and we waited half an hour while there were plenty of open tables but only one maybe two servers. The goat cheese with jam appetizer was excellent. My family and i have been coming to Red Lodge for years and finally ate here. Hidden Gem! We were so excited to find a restaurant with food worth paying for. Food was delicious and fresh. Great wine and food choices, great atmosphere, friendly staff, charming and quaint. Recommended food: smoked trout, wagyu meatballs, beef brisket, crab legs, steaks were good. Great kids menu as well, healthy and great. I gave this 5 stars because I've eaten everywhere else looking for a great experience and meal and i haven't been entirely impressed. Cool bar too.
