AJ's Oasis is a dive bar in Meriden, which was on my Radar because it's in the Wing Addicts' CT…read moreWing Trail. I was looking for a spot to get takeout wings before a noon football game, and I noticed AJ's was open at 9 AM. That's dedication. LOL. Sure enough, there were between 5 and 10 people there eating breakfast and/or getting a drink the entire time I was there from about 10:45 to 11:15. They serve breakfast all day btw. I ordered 7 wings each of the following flavors: Hot Honey Buffalo, Cajun Dry Rub, Raspberry Chili, and Peanut Butter with a side of Spicy Grape Ape. The wings weren't breaded per se, but they seemed to be a bit flour dusted, in a way that worked well. The wing's weren't especially sauced, but the the outer texture of the wings really captured the flavor of the sauces and the wings were all really tasty. The wings were meaty and had good texture. I would definitely return for wings. I also got a bowl of chili for my son. I had a bite. It was a meaty ground beef and bean style chili with maybe a medium dose of Tabasco or another similar hot sauce. They topped it with melted cheddar. It was better than I would have expected for sure. Service was friendly. They have pool and darts. I assume the vibe changes upon time of day. It was pretty chill and "come as you are" while I was there. 4.25 Stars

They do advertise for combo deal's, slices, $1 wings. Angelina's is directly across the street from Hubbard Park too. I'd assume people grab and go to the park. We ordered a simple cheese pizza and a chicken cutlet sandwich. The pizza was fresh, melty cheese with tasty Italian spices and perfectly cooked crust, but wasn't anything special. There are many other pizzerias in the area so it comes down personal preference and price. The chicken cutlet sandwich was a decent size and delicious. We were happy with the portion sizes, quality, and price. Our total was about $23 and we had leftovers (this was for 2 people). We will likely order again and will think of this place if we plan to have pizza for a gathering.

On a recent Saturday I finally stopped in for their $6.50, 2 slice pizza deal that comes with a 20 ounce Coke. The pizza is New Haven style and baked in a wood fired oven, need I say more? The slices were delicious and likely the best in the immediate area so I will be returning in the not too distant future. One word of caution - be prepared to pay an additional 4% over menu prices if you choose to pay by credit card.

The Highlights: * Proportions: Excellent meat-to-topping ratio. They don't skimp on the steak, which is always the biggest test. * Flavor: The cherry peppers added a great kick that cut through the richness of the meat and mayo perfectly. * Quality: A really solid, hearty sandwich that feels worth the order. One Small Note: The full sub comes as one continuous sandwich. If you're looking to split it or just prefer smaller halves, you'll want to grab a knife or ask them to slice it for you, as mine came uncut. Overall, a great lunch spot if you're craving an authentic-feeling Philly. I'll definitely be back!

Krave Cheesesteaks has had a lot of good buzz from the CT Foodie, Blogger and Instagram Community…read more I was recently able to visit for lunch. I live in the Hartford area, Krave certainly has one of the better cheesesteaks within a reasonable driving distance. The seating area has two person tables. They were both full most of the time I was there. Luckily, one was opening up as my cheesesteak was done and I was able to eat there. They could fit one more 2 person table there, and that seems like a good idea from what I saw. Service was friendly. I ordered a cheesesteak, which automatically comes with onions, Cherry peppers, whiz and American Cheese. I added sweet peppers, mushrooms, Mamba Sauce (described as a sweet hot sauce) and mayo. The steak was obviously fresh. It was maybe cut a bit thicker and coarser than many places. My preference would be a touch thinner. I also could have used a bit more seasoning on the steak itself. I was looking forward to the cherry pepper flavor, but it didn't stand out. I wonder if they misunderstood and substituted the sweet peppers for the cherry peppers instead of including both. The bread was about average for a cheesesteak. I think there's an opportunity to level up there. The other toppings were generally good. I've heard good things about the "salmon steak" and the "shrimp steak". I'll possibly be back to try the shrimp steak at some point. 4.25 Stars
