I had heard about this place and wanted to check it out! There were seven in our group and we went for an early dinner. We were greeted and seated right away. It was more than just a few minutes before a server came over. We ordered cocktails and then got serious about choosing our meals. We eventually decided and placed our orders. We got pretzel bites and cheese to start and it was fine. Then our food came out! I think most of us got burgers. I know someone got the fried chicken sandwich and said it was good. The smash burgers were good. About half of the fries were good and the rest were overcooked. The cocktails were good! Our service could have been a little better. Our server was somewhat efficient. She wasn't overly friendly or attentive. Maybe they were short staffed but I don't know. I just know that service was lacking. There are many things to look at on the walls! Randomly found this place while in town - decided to give it a try. We went for a Sunday evening dinner service. There was a small wait for a party of three but the staff was super welcoming and courteous. The ambiance was cool - the outdoor area was super inviting. It was slightly too chilly to sit outside for dinner, though. Once we were seated our server was a little cold - but we never waited for anything and she kept our drinks full so it's hard to criticize too much - she just could've had better "table side manner". The food menu is relatively small - but good. The food my party had was well prepared. Good drink and beer menu and an adequate draft selection - although the first two beers I asked for were no longer in stock so I ended up going with a domestic. If you're a fan of taxidermy, antiques, oddities or something unique this place is second to none! It feels like a natural history museum that you get to drink beer at! They have a good craft beer selection and even offer a house Hazy IPA, which you don't see very often! My bartender was very friendly and welcoming. I love me some, Golden Hoosier. They never disappoint me. They've got their A-Game going for both cocktails and food. For me, they definitely are the King of Happy Hours. Being retired and a day drinker, I appreciate the 11 AM till 6 PM time frame for HH. It lets me day drink and enjoy lunch all at the same time. A recent visit I tried the Steak Bites with a side of Skinny Fries. My friend who was eating low-carb, enjoyed a Wedge Salad with Steak. Both of us enjoyed our meal. Another visit, I tried a different Smash Burger than what I normally enjoy and may have a new favorite. The Bacon Jam, with a fried onion, bacon jam and sharp cheddar cheese is now my Blue Ribbon winner. During the cold months, I like being able to hang a coat on the hooks positioned under the bar. It makes life so much easier. They are also great for ladies to safely secure their purses. I'm not a big cheeseburger person but this day, I had a craving and wanted to find a new spot. The Golden Hoosier had a lot of positive reviews about their burgers and decided to give them a try. As we were waking up, a guy coming out told us they have the best burgers, haha. We came in and they took our phone number down to be added to the waitlist. It took about 20 minutes for our table. It was a nice evening so we walked a bit just to see what else was in the area. Once they texted us about our table, we sat in a section close to the front window. It was very loud. The decor was cool. Lots of animals on the wall. Our waitress was nice and she had the entire section where we were seated. She managed everything very well. The food - I've of the best burgers I've ever eaten. I'm still thinking about how good that burger was. Crispy edges from the smash patty, buns were toasted just right. I even kept it simple with OLT and still very delicious. Hubby asked the server what she recommended and she said the Jam burger. He enjoyed his burger as well. The fries were good, just got cold too quickly. The first few were hot then it's like they cooled all the way down. Some fries were too crunchy. This place is so, so cool. My cousin took me out for dinner and I had never even heard of this spot. Wow, it's such a beautiful and moody spot full of charm!! We had to wait 15 minutes for a booth but I didn't mind because this place serves LOOKS. The decor was awesome! The Golden Hoosier never disappoints! The food to the décor, this spot thrills everyone in our group -- from the littles to the adults. The patio is a must-see; it feels like you've been transported to a state park right in the middle of the city. Our favorite dishes include the Red Hot Riplets with Onion Dip, Steak Bites and Fries, Chicken Wings, and the Smash Burgers. Service was excellent, very attentive, and drinks were filled quickly. They have happy hour which I missed, will try to get to next time. We'd been recommended Golden Hoosier for awhile and finally found a time to go. I loved the vibes immediately after walking in- it's nice to find a local establishment with charm. I guess some may find the taxidermied animals a bit much... but I appreciated the quirkiness. The patio has a fun "campground" feel to its decor, and even though it was a busy Saturday night, they cleared a table for us out there as soon as we arrived. I loved the flavor of all the food. The queso dip was a nice starter, but when the burgers arrived quickly after we realized we could've gone without it. I love a BBQ burger so the "Wrangler" it was for me. The soft cheddar and their bourbon BBQ sauce are a match made in heaven. I will say despite the food coming out quick, it all was a bit lukewarm- not sure how, but it's not like it stopped us from devouring our meals. I visited again, this time on a busy Saturday during Mardi Gras weekend. It was extremely busy but we were able to get seated right away at the bar. The decor is super cute - goth and taxidermy. The service by the bar tenders was absolutely out of this world. They came by to check on us multiple times, bringing water, food and drinks. I was extremely impressed by our bartender's familiarity with the allergens in the meals (I have Celiac and my boyfriend has wheat/milk allergies). The food and drinks were fantastic. We were in town to take the kids to the zoo and some other attractions. After the zoo, everyone was hungry and we chose The Golden Hoosier based on reviews (I just want to talk to some of you Yelpers outside for a minute ). We got there and parking is on a super narrow side street. I have an SUV so that was tricky but we got in good. We walked in and realized that it's a bar. Like a bar bar with tables. They had a kids menu. It was rather dark inside like well, a bar. We were seated and our waitstaff took our drink orders. I was going to get a Coke but, they had something called XL drinks. Not sure what is so I got unsweetened ice tea. Hubs tried a few different beers. He wasn't impressed with any of them. The kids weren't to fond their lemonade either. We ordered queso and wings for an appetizer and the queso came out barely warm. The wings lacked flavor which was odd, because our waitstaff said they were known for these wings. I mean barely. For meals, the small one had chicken tenders, the teen had a grilled cheese and the adults had the Bacon Jam burger. The food was ok. The fries were rosemary parmesan and super salty. The teen wasn't a fan of his grilled cheese and that's all you need to know as they LOVE grilled cheese. For a bar, it was rather expensive. Since we don't live in the area, going back won't be a thing. If we are in the area again, we won't go back there. read more

First, we've been here at least a dozen times and consider it a standard of ours. We love the ambiance of The Golden Hoosier. The Old World bar and deep, rich wood all around gives a warm and classic feel to the place. Also the number and variety of taxidermist art on the walls is pretty awesome and unique. Service is always on point. As for the food, it is upscale casual dining with a highly elevated and inventive cocktail and drink menu. Burgers are great; love the Diablo. Salads are outstanding; usually go with Caesar with Chicken or Wedge with bacon. Oh, and the fries are unbelievably good. I always say I'm not going to eat them all.....right up until they're all gone!! Finally, I've tried many of their rotating cocktails (all have been solid), but often start with the Fantastic Mr Fox Old Fashioned. Give it a try. Support our local businesses. P.S. It was crowded each time I go- so great sign and love that, started the night at the bar where the drinks were good, mixed well but we were not overly attended too. Lots of staff but not a lot of service. Two men making drinks, girl barracks not bussing or cleaning or moving things along well. When we were seated the service took forever, we were not checked in on and a meal substitute was made for us and not asked or communicated to us. The servers who brought the food were not the girl who took our order and they were rude in explaining that they made this substitute for us. Then we asked for salad dressing on the side- it never came. We used aoli from the fries. Some of the food was really great- but when they change the menu on you from what you order, that feels off. It has potential- the place is staffed but the staff does a bad job of communicating to the guests and each other. The sandwich was good but with the chicken was a bit meatier for the price..the bun, while tasty, overwhelmed the flavor of the chicken. If you are sensitive to salt, then I highly recommend getting the fries plain. I wasn't expecting the rosemary parm fries to be so heavily salted. I'm very fortunate to travel the globe for work; Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Central America. And from my experience, there are a handful of establishments that demonstrate this level of care and dedication to their clients as The Golden Hoosiers. I was in town for just one night after easily the worst winter storm this city has experienced in the last year if not the last several years. Most of the restaurants in tiwn decided to close for the evening and yet the team at this establishment decided to show up. And not just be present but to provide those who showed up a level of service, attentiveness and quality to be remarkable to me. Being in St. Louis only one night, I wanted to "drink deeply" of the local cuisine. I ordered severa dishes I had no chance of eating completely but given the modest cost and quality and attention to detail, I made out like a bandit. And the level of service was the most remarkable! I only saw three employees all night but my drink, my plate... not even my water glass was ever empty before I was asked if I needed anything else. Take a minute to think about that. Nasty storm, few places open, three people visibly on staff and I wanted for nothing. I do operations for a living and I make a good living doing it. I can tell you with absolute humility, I was in the presence of people who excel at operations. And I will hazard a guess it's the culmination of their very high level of standards as opposed to a restaurant trying to achieve critical acclaim for a star or some such award.
