old town pub should be a great bar and an alternative to some of the fancier places in the area, unfortunately it's not. the place is broken in, but it goes a little farther and becomes a bit old/tired. please note i am not referencing the cleanliness, everything seemed okay as that goes. the food was average, not bad, not great. bartenders were cool, but the waitresses not as friendly. walk down a small flight of stairs and the bar is immediately on the left. just a ledge opposite the bar. beyond the bar is a mix of seating. the bar top is a perfectly worn wooden surface with a classic wide rail. perfect for forearms. wooden stools with back support. the bar back is a mix of shelves, bottles, & hdtvs. nothing special or decorative. stamped tile ceiling. an outdoor patio that is good on the warm days & for smokers. other patrons are a mix, but most likely you'll be drinking with someone that's spent some time in a bar. easy conversation. atmosphere is usually more subdued. can get louder for a short time if certain crowds come thru or if a chicago team is playing. read more

This is probably one of the oldest bars in Chicago (probably the universe, who knows, it's a big universe). But the main thing that stands out about this place, to me, is the lending library. That said to me when I first started going that people won't necessarily say, "what ya readin' for" if you decide to plop down and read a book. To me, that's just awesome. I was at Old Town for Free Comedy Night last Tuesday. Service was mediocre, the bar was barely full but the real problem was the "comedians" that were allowed to perform on stage. They were allowed to utilize hurtful, hateful, racist, jokes that were not only offensive but completely inappropriate. The homophobia that my friends and I experienced was beyond ridiculous. So if you like comedy that includes racist, homophobic jokes that are hurtful and directed towards audience members... this is the bar for you. I for sure will never be going back. read more

Generous portions. That seems to be the theme here. Whether it the nacho (the table next to ours had a mountain set down on their table), the burgers (a house standard of 10oz), sides like coleslaw (easily feeds two people), the slider samplers, or the calzones. But generousity means nothing if the food isn't good. I came in just feeling like a small burger, and had the "make your own" burger, but it was so tasty that had the whole 10 ounces.. The coleslaw was very good, creamy and not real sweet. Others split the slider sampler, which have a good variety, including chicken and fish. All in all, OTP is a good place if you're hungry or have someone to share with, which they have no probem with. read more

Hubs and I are visiting Chicago - flew in last Wednesday and ended up napping after we got to our AirBNB place, so we needed a late night dinner option nearby. And thus we found OTP. The pub was pretty empty (not too surprising for a Wednesday night), so we got our drinks and food really fast. Yay! Wait staff was pleasant, too. The ambiance was decent - a tad divey, but clean and well-lit. We ordered a Greek salad and were pleased to see it came with kalamata olives instead of canned "black" olives. Nice. Also ordered one of the premium pizzas - only complaint was they put so much topping on, it kept falling off the pizza. But hey, that's better than having too few toppings! So even that was kind of a win. It ended up being karaoke night, too. Well played, Universe - that's one of our not-so-guilty pleasures. We sang a few songs with the locals before heading back to our AirBNB. Would come here again if we lived here. read more

Had a very poor meal at this place today. I knew the food wasn't going to be anything really special, but I was still hoping for a little bit of heart and a loving hand in the kitchen. I ordered the spinach artichoke dip to start, came came out as a liquid blob of cheese, specked with spinach. It was completely pale, and the top had not been browned at all in the oven. In fact, I suspect is was microwaved, between the nacho cheese-consistency and the fact it was COLD in the middle. I told the waitress that it hadn't been warmed through and she took it back to the kitchen. But then a different waitress brought out my fish slides approximately 10 seconds later. How long were you going to give me to eat the appetizer? 1 minute? There were about 5 people in the place; the chef should have known better to pace things out. Since my entree was sitting in front of me with no sign of the shitty spinach dip, I just told the waitress to cancel the order. The fish in the sliders was alright, but the toppings were a joke. Literally about 2 crumbles of blue cheese and a teaspoon on sauce on half, and about two strings of grilled onions and a small green dot of basil mayo on other. Luckily the fish itself wasn't a total loss. For $11 after tip, all the hassle, and all the great surrounding dining options, I won't be back. I can't even see why you'd come here for drinks with a joint like Burton's Place (cheap, strong, pretty decent cocktails) right down the street. read more

This is a small bar with a "Cheers"-like atmosphere. We've been there a few times. The patrons are always friendly and the staff knows what they're doing. The bartenders have a heavy hand when it comes to pouring liquor. The staff makes sure that you don't feel neglected without being pesty. We had a great time at their Halloween party last year. Everyone was in costutmes! Hillarious! We left around midnight to go to Excalibur and after paying a cover and waiting a half an hour for our first drink, we wished we hadn't left. Recently moved to Old Town from Little Italy and was looking for a good local bar that could be our Go-To spot to have a few drinks and some fun. I think we found it here. Oooo, I think I've found a gem. A cute, quiet, comfy, laid-back bar in my 'hood. Went here late last night after bar hopping and being underwhelmed with the old town bars. Old Town Pub was the perfect place to end my night with the relaxed atmosphere, good music, and friendly service. I ordered a vodka tonic and boy was it strong...just how I like it. Our waitress was so sweet and cute and ended up bringing us free shots. I'm not a shot kind of gal, but hey it was free! Only downside, in my opinion, was the lack of specials. 'Sluts' were the special, which a) makes me uncomfortable and b) is somewhat degrading. Not their fault though, they didn't name the drink. read more

Rude bartender today around opening time. When asked, "what is Oberon?" he responded "It's a beer." This came after a few other sarcastic remarks, so I finally questioned if that was the answer he intended to give. So I came to this place on a Wednesday night. We were 8 friends. It wasn't packed at all. All my friends got their pizza's at the same time, however, mine came out 30 minutes late. So instead of eating after everyone was finished I told him the server to cancel my order and void the charges cause I had a tab open. He said it had been voided. Today I look at my statement and the charges went from pending to official. They charged me for a pizza I never even got to eat. It came out 30 minutes late. I just don't understand how this could have happened on a night where it wasn't even busy. On top of that you charge me?!?! Now I have to call my credit card company and report a theft to the police. Yes, I am changing my review from a 1 to a 5 star. I forgot I'd written a bad review my first time there. Having lived across the street for almost two years, since that one time, Old Town Pub and it's usual inhabitants have become family even though I've since moved back to the NYC area. They are easily one of the most down to earth bars in the area with amazing food, amazing staff and I have forged lifelong friendships in that place. If you want to feel a true centralized taste of the collective Chicago, forget the Sears Tower, forget Millenium Park, forget Lolapalooza, go to the Old Town Pub :D read more

The pizza was quite good, the atmosphere was really cozy, and I liked the assortment of things you can get on the menu (they even have a cheese fondue appetizer). We were told that the Bacardi drinks were $5. Asked if the drinks were wanted were $5 (normally $10), and we were told yes by our waitress. When we got our check we were charged the normal price of $10, and our waitress (the same who told us they were $5) said that we were wrong and that only certain drinks qualified for the $5 promotion. If you live in the area, do yourself a favor and stop in here on any random night. First of all, all weeknights have specials on beer and food, so you're bound to get a deal. Secondly, it's a friendly little place with nice big booths and lots of beer. Their food is always reliable, my favorite of all being the cheese fries from hell. I'm not a fan of cheese fries but these things are addicting. Top that off with their thin crust pizza, and you've got a heart attack waiting to happen. Smells like bleach and pineapple! It really did. I thought it was random too. My boyfriend's work firm ended up here instead of their planned site which "forgot" to show up and open. So with the high expectations, Old Town Pub seemed a bit last resort, but we made it work. There was one bartender, 4 couples who later showed up and 30 of us. The drinks were well made, including a variety of wines to choose from. Their mojitos were excellent--Threw me off! The inside has an old pub feel, with a juke box and a few games. If you're looking to have a few drinks in a laid back environment, here's a good option. Oh their food looked good (didn't have a chance to try it), along with their daily drink specials. read more

My sister took me here for lunch when I was visiting a few weeks ago. I had friends visiting me this past weekend (now that I moved to Chicago) and I took them here for pizza. The pizza is awesome and it's a really cool place because there are so many TVs. I've now asked them on 2 occasions to turn on the Miami Heat game and they do so immediately. Great place! read more

The annoying thing is that they told me it would be ready within 30 minutes and 50 minutes later it still wasn't ready. I could understand if it was a busy night for them, but there were a total of 4 people in the whole restaurant. Today being one of the first warm days of the year, the only thing on my mind was a decent meal consumed on a patio. Old Town Pub was uncrowded and looked cheap, which seemed like possible plusses. The waitress was unfriendly, but we ordered a couple of Long Islands right when we sat down... which never came. She brought me a diet soda instead of regular, a huge pet peeve of mine. We only saw her about once every 10 minutes despite the fact that there were only 3 tables with patrons and they were all on the patio. The dessert came out first--a cold, solid "molten chocolate cake" which was about 2 inches in diameter and cost $7. Then came the food, which was less than noteworthy, and the only thing we had to look forward to was the long wait for the check. Several groups of potential patrons gave up before ever seeing the server, and at least one other table almost left but was helped just as they were about to leave. Worst of all, the waitress seemed uninterested and unapologetic for the long waits and poor service. With all the other positive reviews, I might give this place a second chance on another day. Next time I'll stick to drinks. read more

I don't think I would normally seek out this type of place but it met our "too hungry to find a better place" needs. I will say that their cheese fries are probably the best that I've ever had. I worked here for a couple years and I loooove this bar. the kitchen is clean, the food is surprisingly great and the staff (at least the ones from when I was there) are fantastic (also attractive!) awesome crowd of regulars and neighborhood folks; karaoke on wednesday nights; couple of big screens for the games; and usually some decent specials.
