Thoughtful, Professional, Knowledgable As soon as I walked into Old Town Smiles, I noticed the pleasant, clean, and welcoming atmosphere. The receptionist, assistant, dentist, and hygienist introduced themselves and took their time to accommodate me as a patient; rather than trying to rush onto the next. I don't necessarily like to take my time doing these types of things (who does?), but it was really refreshing to have this type of interaction as a first-time patient. The whole initial exam took about 2 hours and it was so detailed and through, I was beginning to wonder what I was missing from all my previous dentists. Dr. Ahmed is absolutely the best! You will not find a better dentist. I've been to at least 5 or 6 other dentists in my life before finding her and I just wish I had found her sooner. She really listens and will put in the time necessary to satisfy any concern I have. Unfortunately, I had a lot of dental work in my teens and ended up hating and fearing the dentist. Dr. Ahmed completely changed that in one visit. I've been seeing her for three years and I will NEVER let another dentist touch my teeth. Now that I've had the best, I will never go back! I moved to another state for work last year, and still go back to Virginia to see Dr. Ahmed twice a year. You only get one set of teeth! My husband sees Dr. Ahmed too, and we could not be happier. After a lot of research for a new dentist (since I was new to town), I knew I found my dentist. The dental hygienist was excellent and Dr. Kitchen made sure I was comfortable when doing some resin composite. I was so excited to have found Dr. Kitchen and Old Town Smiles. And here's the problem....they no longer participate with Delta Dental Insurance and I wasn't made aware of it ... I wasn't expecting to pay over the the "maximum contract allowance". BUT...if you are looking for a "GREAT" dentist and insurance isn't an issue....I highly recommend Dr. Kitchen. Lesson learned....get a quote from your insurance company before any work is preformed even if they tell you they participate with your insurance company. Again.....I very much would like to continue to see Dr. Kitchen and have her complete the "Treatment Plan" she outlined for me....but I have insurance and want to use it. read more

They will take you quickly for an emergency, help you find a specialist if needed, comfort you when you are afraid of needles. This office is *very* attentive-- almost too attentive. I had an appointment at 7:10am and we spent so much time talking about my minor bite issue that I was still late for work... I love Old Town Smiles. If I could give it a higher rating I would. The staff is incredibly friendly. It's the only doctor I have never waited for an appointment. If you are scheduled for a 3 o'clock appointment, you will be seen at 3. I used to be terrified if the dentist. So much so that I didn't go for 20 years. They made it do easy. There was no looking down at me. Their only concern was getting my teeth healthy, which they have done. I have not had one cavity since I started with them almost give years ago. They have all the newest equipment to help make your experience as pain free as possible. Their attention to detail is excellent. Went for an emergency visit for Dr. Adam Goldstein. He and his staff was pleasant, professional, and the interior was very calming and spacious. Dr. Goldstein was very engaging and explained dental concerns with ease and simplicity. Unbelievably greedy owners and they are proud of it. I am literally crying as I type this long review. They are willing to lose a customer who was willing to pay thousands out of pocket all because they wanted an extra $199 for an "initial patient exam," after I already paid for an "initial consultation exam." This is long, so here we go. I really wanted to like this place. I recently moved to the area and was looking for a new dentist. I also needed bonding to be done to fix a tiny chip on a front tooth. Although this place is out of network for my insurance, I was willing to pay out of pocket for exceptional quality and service. I was told that before I could get a simple bonding procedure, since I'm a new patient, I'd have to have a consultation and pay out of pocket. The initial consultant was about $200. I was quoted in the thousands to do a simple bonding to fix a small (barely noticeable) chip on my front tooth and a tiny hole gap between my front two teeth. Even though the price was much higher than what I was quoted from other dentists for actual veneers, I decided to go with them because of the great customer service. I made my appointment for the bonding. However, before getting the bonding, I was convinced to get their professional whitening done first, which made sense, so I paid for that service. A month later and today is bonding appointment. I was super excited to finally get the bonding done because I have a vacation planned for July 4th (next weekend). I called this morning and was willing to pay more to get a cleaning done prior to bonding. I just had a full exam and cleaning by my previous dentist only a few months ago, but I like the super clean feeling. They scheduled me a cleaning right before the bonding appointment. But wait...after I took the additional time off from work to head to my appointment, I received call saying, before we can do the cleaning, we need to do an initial exam to establish you as a patient and that will be an additional $199! Are you serious?! So what was the $200 I paid for the initial visit? I was told, "Sorry, that was just a consultation to focus on the bonding. But we should have suggested you do the initial exam then because it's the same price." I canceled the bonding appointment because I don't like being taken advantage of and expressed how disappointed I am. All she said was, okay, I'll cancel your appointment. That's it. No sympathy. No reasoning with them. Now I have to find a whole new dentist and start the process all over. A new consultation fee, a new dentist, and another wait! They are losing a patient that was willing to pay thousands out of pocket for good service all because they wanted an additional $199. I am a reasonable person and I understand protocol, but if you know that you just collect money from a patient for an initial consultation, why not make a one time adjustment and write it off as a business expense. I was literally about to pay $2000 for cleaning and bonding. Just add in the $199. Just greedy people and a major inconvenience to me. read more

I've been a patient of Dr. Ahmed's for several years now (I used to see her at her previous practice) and she is truly amazing. I'm afraid I cannot say enough good things about her, which is why it's taken me so long to write this post, but I will try. First, her bedside manner is excellent. She really takes the time to listen to her patients' concerns, and to explain all available options to resolve those concerns, including the pros and cons of each option. Yes, this takes time, but when I'm discussing potentially invasive and/or expensive dentistry options, I want a dentist that's going to take the time to make me comfortable before I move forward with a treatment plan, so Dr. Ahmed is perfect in my opinion. Second, Dr. Ahmed is extremely knowledgeable about all the latest dentistry techniques so I feel good that her solutions to my dental issues are long lasting. Last, she knows that I have anxiety when I undergo dental work, so I appreciate that she does everything in her power, both medically and procedurally, to make sure that I am comfortable. The only drawback to this practice is that it's fee for service, but I've decided that, all things considered, I'm willing to pay the extra money to continue to see her. read more

My family and I have been seeing Dr. Kitchen for almost 20 years, and she is the best of the best. She is incredible- helpful, thorough, very kind. I have been fortunate enough to have never had a dental emergency, but she has taken care of my parents for major work and done an excellent job. The hygienists and receptionists are so wonderful, too. The office itself is very clean, very high tech, and very responsive. They do an excellent job with insurance and billing, and you are made aware of any additional costs before a procedure is done. I have switched insurance in recent years and she is no longer in my network, but frankly, I would pay out of pocket for her level of care. read more

The service was fantastic - no complaints about that. However ... they are very expensive and rope you into unnecessary tests and procedures. One example - $450 for an unnecessary panoramic X-Ray? Really? My dental insurance company covers just one per year and rather than ask for the records, this office just went ahead and took the X-Ray of my kid. If you are looking for a dentist in the Alexandria area, stop looking, really. I recently moved to the area and have had really bad cavities. I called about 12 (yes 12) dentists until I was referred to old town smiles by another dentist that could not get me in. To say I was impressed is an understatement. I have very high standards and they were exceeded by this office. From the moment you walk in Stephanie greets you and her friendly demeanor is contagious. I cannot believe how friendly everyone in that office is, they make me feel guilty about how mopey I am at work. They began a very thorough dental exam (emphasis on thorough) and the technician and dentist worked with me to discuss why I had so many cavities and what the plan would be. Dental work can be expensive, and I stressed that I was a newlywed and cost was what terrified me about the dentist. They really approached the plan with a caring and non intimidating attitude. They made me feel like I would be able to have this taken care of, and they would help me every step of the way. It takes a lot for me to take the time and write a review of a business, but honestly I could not wait to write this review because I feel like employees (at oldtown smiles) need to be commended for their friendly and professional work, it really was refreshing to go to the dentist and have an experience like I did.
