Great food and atmosphere with a fantastic view. Perfect end to my backpacking trip in the Berkshires was a great lunch at the Old Forge. I was looking for a great place for an early lunch after a weekend in the woods. Old Forge was opening up soon, was close to where we were, and had great reviews on Yelp. We had to wait a few in the parking lot for them to open the doors, but once they did boy did the place fill up fast. In fact, it was pretty crowded not long after we were seated on their amazing deck overlooking the Berkshires. We perused the tasty sounding menu and ordered up beers (they have plenty of them to choose from! Their draft selection is good and the bottle selection extensive). My stomach was making loud noises so we quickly made our food choice and settled in for some good conversation. I ordered the burger which ended up being an awesome choice. The food was fulfilling, not only because I had been hiking all weekend, but because it was well cooked, seasoned, and delicious. The pumpkin stout by Cape Anne was perfect to wash it all down. I'm so happy to have found a great place to stop for a great meal when I'm out hiking in the Berkshires. I tried this place around xmas time. I thought it was alright. I went for lunch so I didn't go near the bar area so I can't comment much on that. For the seating I was in a room that wasn't big but had a bunch of tables, granted it wasn't pack so it worked but I could see it being a problem. The big problem I had were the chairs. I thought they were horrible and I'm not one to really complain about something like that. We got the nachos for two and there were 3 of us and it was a perfect match. I got one of the chicken sandwiches that I thought was a little dry and nothing filling. The big thing here is the beer choices, they have a lot which is a nice change for a berkshire bar. Maybe it's because they are understaffed, or have a lot of new staff, or are just very poorly managed. (Ultimately, this is all a reflection of poor management.) But this was a terrible dining experience. The wait for a table was over an hour, which would've been more tolerable if the hostess had been more communicative and friendly. She wouldn't give us a wait time estimate and, after we'd waited about 40 minutes, she told us there was a table available and would be "right out" to get us. Over 20 minutes later, she finally called for us (and snapped at us when we were confused and inquired). The waitress was friendly and attentive - the only positive for the evening. But there were several problems with food and drink orders: a wrong beer, as well as poorly poured beers on tap; tater tots with bacon inside which we were told would not have bacon (for the vegetarian in our group); pulled pork sliders missing the cole slaw, and with stale buns. And besides all this, the serving of entrees was also poorly timed. One entree came out, then it was at least 10 minutes before the other entrees were served and missing sides were provided. The French fries didn't have salt (we had to ask for that), and during this entire experience, no one ever offered us water. The teenager who brought out the food mumbled incomprehensibly so it was constant confusion whenever he stood there with plates. The kicker of the evening was when we noted that the tater tots had bacon and we specifically had asked if they did, the waitress went away and came back saying that they'd been removed from our bill but that because of that she "had to take them off our table" instead of just comping us the item and letting others at our table have them. Everyone in town goes to this restaurant. Another 10 minute drive away and you could go to Pittsfield for a chain restaurant. This bar is known for their selection of beer on tap and wings. This place was just okay for me. They have a great beer selection! The food was just okay though. The chili was a bit too sweet for our taste. Their famous house wings were super crispy and juicy on the inside but the sauce was also a little sweet for me. The beef sandwich was kind of bland, we asked for au jus on the side to give it some flavor but that was even more bland than the sandwich. I was salting all my food like a mofo. read more

Had my sister's bridal shower here this past weekend. I know what you're thinking....bridal shower? In a bar? Yep. Worked out wonderfully too. We had cocktails and apps in a private room on Saturday afternoon. The food was delicious (omg, GET the wings; they're SO damn good), drinks were great (tons of beers on tap), service was damn near perfect. The waitstaff was always there when we needed them, and not hovering when we didn't. I definitely left impressed. For food, we had the wings (YUM), crabcakes (cold by the time I got to them, but pretty good for bar crabcakes), baked brie (great), pasta w/ chicken & chick peas (kind of dry, but not bad), a bruschetta bar (oh, this was terrific! so many toppings, so little room in my tummy), and fruit and veggies w/ dip. There were so many other options we wanted to try, I guess I'll just have to go back and sample some more! 4 stars b/c the downstairs room, while very rustic and cute, was a bit dark. Needs more lighting, natural or artificial. But I loved that we had our own private bar and bartender down there. The function manager I worked with was the best. I had to coordinate this mostly via email, and she was always so fast to respond, flexible with everything, and patient to no end with my incessant questions. Abbot Ale is on tap here, which, according to a pint glass collector-friend of mine who only visited the Old Forge through my pictures I shot last week, is rare for American bars. But the Old Forge is no typical bar. First of all, it's in the western Massachusetts mountain town of Lanesborough that everyone Anglicanly refers to as Lanesboro. There's not much in Lanesboro, but it's a vital link on Route 7 between Pittsfield and Williamstown, and very close to the Jiminy Peak and Brodie Mountain ski resorts. Second, the beer menu, reminiscent of Big City in Brighton, Mass., lists over 100 bottles from around the world. There are also about a dozen drafts on tap, Abbot Ale included the day I went. Third, the food rocks. Well, it's pub grub to be fair with standard nachos, mozzarella sticks, and chicken tenders, but how many pubs do you know that market a quesadilla filled with butternut squash? I don't know of Mexican taquerias with this delicious appetizer! I can go on, but you get the point, right? Go for the beer, the atmosphere, the outdoor deck, and the food. Oh, and you can chalk up your culinary history to include a meal in the Anglican Lanesboro that stocks the British Abbot. read more

This place has AMAZING wings! I got the sweet and spicy wings and seemed to have a little bit Asian flair to them. The garlic and ginger really came through. There was also a touch of curry in them. My dad asked the waitress her opinion and she raved an didn't hesitate and said the open faced brisket. My dad liked it but the BBQ sauce was a little sweet for his likely. My mom really enjoyed her meal of étouffée. The Cajun sausage had the right amount of kick to it. Nice size portions of food also. Amazing selection of beer! I'm from Long Island, NY and I was able to get a Brooklyn ale, I was impressed! If I visit this area again, Old Forge is a place I will be coming back too! read more

This is one of the niche gems in Berkshire County. I've been going here my whole life - although I don't live local anymore, my friends and I make sure to make a stop here whenever we're home. The Forge has great character - it's always lively with a warm atmosphere and they serve the best wings I've ever had. That's right - the best. Their Original flavor is the best - traditional is also really good. Come for the wings and stay longer for the beer. They have a great selection of classic and craft brews so you can always find a good option to pair with your wings. There's a deal they offer where you get a mug when you try a certain number of different beers. I don't know the exact number, but you can infer that the locals love this spot if they're will to earn the mug. They also have a simple and fresh salad bar so you can feel a little better about crushing a dozen wings. The creamy garlic sauce is the cream of the crop dressing-wise. Use this for the wings as well as your salad. If you come here - get the wings. Their other food is really good, but don't waste your time when you could be served some top-notch wings. read more

Have eaten here for years and 5 years ago, this review would have been a perfect 5. But over time, prices have gone up, quality has gone down, very disappointing. Wings use to be super meaty and drowning in a pool of delicious sauce. Now they are dry and less than half the meat they use to have. Not to mention service has gone down. For example last time we dined in, we asked to get some leftovers to go. When to go boxes were brought back, waitress had thrown away our blue cheese dressing. Not a big deal, we asked for a new one, which waitress got, but then charged us for it! No longer take my business here, which is disappointing, since this was a former 1-3 night a week staple for us. read more

I really liked the Old Forge, and I would gladly recommend it to friends and family. The building is full of character that results in a really interesting dining experience. All of the brick work and fireplaces and such really add to the ambiance. Our family of four (including a tween and a teen) visited after a day of skiing, and we really enjoyed ourselves. I was a bit bummed when, after viewing the coziness of the main level, we were led downstairs to be seated. After a strange little hike downstairs and through some doors, we found a room with a character equal that of upstairs... and a roaring fireplace in the corner. The only thing I didn't like is the fact that they had some Yankee Candles burning down there, which added a fragrance to the air that seemed opposed to the expected smells of hearty food. A small thing, to be sure, but it did stand out. We also found it a bit strange that the place was still decorated for Christmas in the middle of February. Even the specials menu was brimming with red and green festive clip art. Laziness? Or just a fondness for the holiday? I can't really say. Our waitress was friendly and constantly surprised whenever anyone said "Thank You". She would essentially clutch her pearls with a small intake of breath and a surprised look and say, "Why, you are so welcome!" I mean, it's super nice and sweet of her... but just a tiny bit creepy. We discussed and couldn't decide which way her amazingly friendly attitude tipped the scales. You will have to decide for yourself. Dang, I had the fish and chips and it was awesome. Totally awesome. Perfect. I don't even know what anyone else had because I was focused on that fish and chips. Really good. Oh, and they have a TON of beers... including a lot of obscure stuff. You would have to visit multiple times to even come close to sampling a bit of what they offer. I was overwhelmed, so I just ordered a Guinness, and it was awesome. I just want to go back. Came through here to watch a little football and have some of their acclaimed wings. The 12 or 14 Seasonal taps had a decent selection. The bottle list is extensive but doesn't list alcohol % or IBU's which can be helpful for designated drivers and beer snobs alike. Fortunately our waitress knew her beers and was able to get us exactly what we were looking for. The hot wings were great, some of the best I've had. Traditional wings...not so much, a little heavy on the cumin and not much else. A note for anyone wanting to watch sports here, the TVs are pretty small and sparsely located. The TV at the room we were sitting in had the TV at eye level, which meant that anyone getting up (and socializing) would block the action. So if seeing every minute of a game is your prerogative, I'd suggest somewhere else. Great scene otherwise though. read more

The guy at the front door who looked real grumpy ruined my experience and I will not be returning. I feel so bad for all the employees who stand there and get paid for minimum wage and get yelled out their whole shift by him.Grumpy pants. If I wanted to hear yelling the whole time I would of stayed home . I hope he's the owner because he sure did walk around that place like he owned it. Never again!!! Sad. After we spent over 2 hours at this restaurant we finally got our food...... everything was great besides one meal was wrong.... no big deal. By the time we got the corrected meal everyone at the table had packed up food in Togo boxes. I told the waitress I refuse to pay for the meal and the manager, curt, proceeded to blame the virus on the food mess up. I laughed at him and told him that is not a excuse and he processed to yell at me and call me a brat and a bunch of inappropriate words and was very disrespectful as we left the restaurant. I feel bad for his staff they all looked miserable! Horrible place ! I don't understand how they have any business with the way they treat their customers . Food was okay but definitely not worth the experience. Our bill was well over 150$ and we tipped 40+ because we felt bad for the waitress . That man needs help and so does his business! Despite having a number of open tables it was a good 15' wait to be seated. The hostess seemed unable to manage to check for people coming in to the two entrances (not very far apart.) The wait for food was very long despite the dinner crowd markedly thinning out. An appetizer of cheese on Italian bread was lusciously described but mediocre. The fish (scrod) and chips had too much breading and was undercooked. By that point I didn't want an additional wait to get something else. The negative, and why it didn't get four stars, is that the service was slow and ineffective. Our server was friendly but the rest of the staff serving us didn't seem to know what they were doing. The food was really substandard, bad enough that we will never return. Eating out on the back deck at dinner time was a nightmare, despite the myriad of umbrellas. One was lucky not to get sun stroke. Our table looked out on the parking lot and the continual wafting smell of septic was overwhelming. The arms of the chairs were all sticky and the beer they served us never had the bottom wiped off so there were nothing but sloppy wet rings all over the table. My friends and I were in the area after a day of skiing at Jiminy Peak. We originally planned to go to Powder Hounds but they were closed at the time so we decided to go to this place. Luckily, we were not disappointed with our choice! The setting was very busy with little knick knacks covering every inch of the wall and ceilings. It had a very dim lit, pub feeling different from anything you'd find back here in Connecticut. I ordered the Shredded Beef Enchilada(Tex-Mex Style) that came out to be a massive size! I almost finished the entire thing which was to my surprise because I'm a small person but with a big appetite. My friends ordered the Grilled Greek Chicken Salad and one of the burgers, I forget which but they were both satisfied with their choices. As mentioned by other reviewers, they have a large selection of beers. And unfortunately, I started hearing about their widely famous wings after my visit, otherwise, I would have ordered their wings so if you haven't tried their wings I suggest you do! read more

We went for a weekend trip to the Berkshires and found this place highly rated.. Once there we were welcomed as if we were all family! It was great the bartenders were nice and the drinks kept coming.. We enjoyed tasting all the different drinks.. And she gave us little sample shots of flavors we were curios to try.. When at Jiminy Peak, you must make at pit stop at Old Forge. They have the most amazing barbecue ribs I've tried to date. Try a pint from their extensive beer menu to compliment your meal. Their award winning chicken wings were ok (although I think I'm still partial to Bon Chon). Pretty much the best choice for food at the Berkshires. I was craving something spicy and happily found out the kitchen can make their hot wings even hotter than what they have on the menu. these super extra hot wings were everything I hoped for. We came as a group of 8. Asked waitress for recommendation b/t 2 dishes, she hadn't tried either of them. Hmmm. Our friends and i rated our dishes as the following: Ribs =5, hamburger= 3.5-4 (two people ordered, one thought great, the other said needed more flavor & needed bbq sauce for flavor), kids burger= 3, shredded beef enchilada= 1! (Very unhappy w/ this, should take off menu, done all wrong), scallops (pictured)=1! (Flavor weird, needed salt, in sea of butter and fat that did not taste good, weird texture, needed salt to eat it, didn't want to waste it since paying $18.95! Saffron rice pilaf with it looked good, again no flavor ;( why?!?! ) Buffalo shrimp= 4 huge prawns, original wings=5. Service 3.5, i am really hoping they don't charge for every refill cuz we had quite a few yes for soda no for milk). Restroom=4, ambiance=? Cuz of no seating inside we sat outside on the deck during b4 sundown so baked in the hot sun, umbrellas didn't cover us. Also spent much time shooing flies off our food. I remember we ordered spinach mushroom cheese roll up and thought it was too greasy for my taste, and the service was not very attentive. 7 years later, back here by recommendation for beer & wings. oh myyyy. Arrived on Sunday night 6pm during president's wknd. It was busy and we were seated in 15 min. Serve staff looked the same as before - young ladies probably attending local college. The vibe was casual and romantic - slightly too dark to take good picture of the food. The menu was vegan friendly with mushroom, salad bar, soup etc. I had french onion soup again and it was filling. We ordered the wings on recommendation, and they were able to mix two styles with an order of a dozen wings. However, the Thai wing was too sweet and oily for my taste, while the old fashion was ok. (The reason: the meat was not soft nor juicy. Both wings tasted dry, hard and slightly over cooked.) My friend ordered chicken fajita and it was served sizzling hot from the metal plate. We will be back for the selection of beer and the vibe. I will stick with my French onion soup and forgo the wings. read more

So, there are some places where you can feel like "we're all in this together" in regards to Covid-19. This was not one of those places! We were initially sent down to the lower level to wait for a table. We could have also waited in our car but were hoping the wait wouldn't be long. The hostess told my husband "Don't take off your mask" when he wasn't trying to and our family was downstairs by ourselves. We're not here trying to give anyone Coronavirus, lady! Then, he did try to take off his mask after we were seated and were told he couldn't until food or beverages were at the table. So, two minutes later he was apparently "safe" to take off his mask when he had water to drink??? Our waitress was not particularly friendly and everyone's food was just average, except mine which was a chicken noodle bowl and was quite tasty. The final drama occurred when the check came and they had charged us $4 for two tiny plastic containers of honey mustard that my boys had gotten for their fries instead of getting ketchup. I complained to the waitress but she didn't care and said it was "their policy." I was mostly upset that she didn't bother to tell us at the time they asked for it, and the fact that it was definitely an excessive charge for the amount of honey mustard received. We have been going to the old forge for years and went today and I can say we will never be back there! The owner was rude when we first arrived, once being seated we sat at the table for about 45 minutes not even being acknowledged. There were about 4 staff members sitting down across from us eating and a few others walking around the restaurant. We never got a hi we will be right with you or anything. I totally understand that places are short staffed due to covid but there was plenty of staff. Hands down the worst service I have ever had.if I didn't have to give it at least one star I wouldn't put any, they don't deserve it. read more

This is the best beer bar in the Berkshires. Over a dozen beers on tap, including some very intriguing microbrews. Well over 200 in bottles. Extremely knowledgeable staff who can guide you through a very rich and thorough beer list. Friendly atmosphere, with lots of regulars around. The food is quite good, especially if you stay on the simple side - wings, burgers, fish and chips - the fancier stuff can be hit or miss. The major downside of this place is its popularity - it can be very crowded on weekends and in early evenings. Still, it's indispensable and very much worth a visit. read more
