It's just The General Store, to us locals. I really hesitated about the 5 stars, it crowded enough here. Getting in on a Sunday AM is almost impossible, but well worth the wait. I have been a loyal patron for over 20 years and after my experience today I (1) joined yelp to post, and (2) will not be returning. There has clearly been a change with the management over the past year or so but I have continued to go back. The sandwiches have gone from 10 to a 5 at best depending on what "happy" person is working the meat slicer. I have also overlooked the cleanliness issues and the rounding up of change because the food and portion sizes justified the price. Today the lines were ridiculous, the meat slicer was also working both cash registers, ungloved, and slicing meat while giving snarky responses to his customers, and I wondered why am I here? I paid $9.50 for a sandwich ( which would be less in Manhattan) and got what amounted to a roll with a paltry few slices of turkey and a heavy dose of attitude. Hope Oldwick goes back to its old ways and what made them to begin with, but I until I hear this, I will not be returning. Nostalgia and childhood memories aren't worth enduring this place any longer. What a shame. read more

Pros: Yummy food, casual atmosphere Cons: The bathrooms!!! I find it very unappetizing. When you walk toward the bathrooms, you are hit by the smell of urine. I wouldn't sit in the back room near them, unless you enjoy that smell with your meal. The bathrooms could use a renovation, but I would be happy with some paper towels or a more powerful hand dryer. At this point, the hand dryer is so weak and the smell is so bad that I just wipe my hands on my jeans and get out of there. It is not that the bathroom is filthy in a way you can see, it is as if urine has seeped into the tile and the odor will not leave! If you don't have to use the bathroom and avoid the backroom, it is a great place to go! Some people may think I'm being picky, but when I encounter bathrooms like this, it makes me wonder what is going on in the kitchen. It may also be a good idea to replace the carpets. read more

Well, I used to love this place a few years ago. It has gone down hill tremendously. I enjoy it because of the old town charm and the rustic atmosphere right in the heart of Tewksbury. They have cleaned it up lately, which is a breath of fresh air, nyuck nyuck nyuck. Lately, the sandwiches have much less meat (for the same price of course). If I am going to spend a good buck on a sub, make it worth the money. Please don't get your sandwich making ideas from Subway. Prices are high, typical of the area. Beware: the breakfast promptly stops at 11am!!! Al, the grill Sergeant, loudly tells you that to your face when all you want is an egg sandwich at 11:01. And if you do get your lonely egg order in before 11, prepare to stand there for a good 20-30 minutes waiting for it. Not because they are busy, because they don't have their act together. Food is boring, and this area demands better quality. Drive to Whitehouse to Jerry's Brooklyn Grill for a fantastic meal. Lots of potential for this place with the right management and people. I wish I could give zero stars. I stopped in with my girlfriend on Sunday, and ordered a Turkey Sandwich on a baguette. To me a baguette is a crusty French bread. The "baguette" was very soft and mushy. The turkey was bland; and a half a sub and two drinks was over 13.00. We heard someone talking about how great the onion rings were so we ordered them next. They were over 5 dollars. We got seven onion rings. Bottom line: ridiculously overpriced and really crappy quality. Do not go here! read more

I come here all the time, and have been for most of my life. The food is always great! Breakfast is fantastic! You can never go wrong with their Belgian waffles (best I've ever had). They also have great burgers, cheese steaks, chicken fingers...It's just a great place to grab a quick bite or order ahead and pick up on your way home. I ordered a cheese steak sandwich last week when the place was virtually empty, assuming from past experience elsewhere that a traditional cheese steak came with steak, cheese, peppers and onions. However, that is not how Oldwick General Store prepares it. In Oldwick, it comes with a sparse amount of steak and some cheese on a cheaply-tasting hoagie. I don't know if it was supposed to have come with peppers and onions and the cook simply didn't know that, because the portion size of the steak he made was so scantily distributed that it was essentially a bread sandwich with a smattering of meat and cheese. It was genuinely disappointing, and truly subpar. This was after the owner Scott (as he has often done) charged me $1.05 in state tax for a $8.95 sandwich. Since when is there a 12% tax on food in New Jersey? But his propensity to steal by overcharging customers is a frequent complaint I have heard from many other people, particularly senior citizens. I don't know if it is abject laziness with ringing up the proper charge, contempt for the customers that he has or simply a lack of intellectual faculties. But I advise anyone who shops here to beware of the overcharges, since it is a habitual problem - particularly with the owner Scott. read more

Been going to the General Store my entire life and it is still as good now as it was when I was a kid. Recently under new management the place has not lost an ounce of quality. The subs from the deli are my absolute favorite but they do everything well. From baked goods to milkshakes to numerous grill items this place is great for breakfast and lunch. I drive by every day and have for 22 years on the way to work, but find I bypass the general store more often than not. When I go in, it just reinforces why I don't shop here often. I find the prices here are high, and they seem to change depending on who is ringing you up. There have been occasions where I have to ask for my change back because the bill came to say $2.75 and I handed them a $3.00 and they just stick the $3.00 in the register and hand me my item. Today I bought a tuna sandwich on a roll, 1 lb coleslaw, 1 lb potato salad , bag of chips, which he shoved into the bag and a whole apple strudel( which used to be better- this one the filo dough was hard and heavy, not light and airy as it was in the past- I don't think they buttered between layers and it was hard to cut.).The total cost $39.46. I asked how much the strudel was. It used to be $8.50 and I bought them often for family functions, work etc.... then literally over night a year or two ago they raised it to $16.25 or there about! When I asked him how much the strudel was, he said he "thought" $16.50 or $16.75.... I don't remember. I just looked at the person next to me, and said "he thinks... wouldn't it be good if he knows since he already rang me up! " She gave me that eye raised smile... They had 1 person working the bakery section,sandwich section and register. I had to wait to get a sandwich made as he started with me, stopped in the middle of making the sandwich, rang up someone else, came back started again, stopped again, ringing up another person,etc... I had to get to work and I told him so. He then focused on me and finished up. I do understand he was overwhelmed and trying to take care of everyone at once, but you just can't do that. I was there first. I spent far to much time there. I do have to say though and "PLEASE DON"T CHANGE THIS" they make the best subs in the area. Expensive for sure, but loaded. I go out of my way to buy them here ( I don't live near here) and will continue as long as they don't change them. I won't be going back any time soon for anything else. read more

Love is a strong word, so I'll stick to like this place very much. It's sort of on my way to work, so it has become my go to spot for picking up a sandwich. Breakfast, ah, the double egg with ham and cheddar. Lunch, the #15, roast beef and turkey with cheese.... feel like a sub? Perfect, the half size is just short of a full size anywhere else... if you got a couple of people to share with at work, bring on the full size for about $20.... My meal last night at 57 Main Restaurant at the Oldwick General Store was nothing short of exceptional and exceeded all expectations. We began with the Maine Crab appetizer which I devoured before remembering to take a picture. It was subtle, clean and fresh with citrus and mint. Our next course the Beggar's Purse was insanely crazy good. Little pasta purses with pear, ricotta, asiago cheese finished off with a dark butter and sage sauce that made me swoon. Those little bits of toasty sage in butter were amazing. Butter never tasted this good. Next up was the Short Rib with Hanger Steak, mashed potatoes, and a rutabaga crown on top. Every bit of this dish absolutely melts in your mouth leaving the recipient so pleasantly satisfied. I wax poetic but yes it was that good. Ah but all good things must come to an end and we ended our evening with the pecan tart and apple tart with buttery goodness and light flaky pastry. Can't wait to go back. Love this place! Whenever I'm going to see my 81 year old mother, I have to stop to pick up scones for her! She adores them....very often then sell quick and I miss out on them. I got smart and call to ask them to hold some for me! One time, they were sold out and the owner Scott, said come back in 1/2 an hour, I'll put some in the oven now...talk about service! In the pas month or so, they're making 180 degree changes, redecorating. Staff is always friendly. There's nothing like a general store...especially Oldwick General Store! Been going here for over 30 years and it is a favorite Maybe I've been there maybe 2000 times give or take.. I don't get the negative reviews as most of them seem untrue. The burgers are great. The owner sourced the meat from the same supplier as the famous old Don's Drive-in in Livingston. The fries are the best I've had anywhere. The sandwiches are big with the roast beef and turkey being store made fresh. They have their own bakery, like Don's did. The chocolate chip cookies are amazing. The staff have mostly been there for years and are incredibly friendly. It's the kind of place where everybody knows your name. Short story: the morning after my son's engagement party, we walked in to the General Store on a busy Sunday with 22 hung over people. Everybody got served a great hot breakfast within 30 minutes and they were blown away by how great it was. The new owner, Scott, who is a reknowned chef, has even improved the place we've loved all these years. OK, the bathrooms are pretty basic but it's a 250 year old classic colonial building. In all my visits, I've never smelled urine outside the bathrooms as some reviewers claimed. I think some competitor must be trying to torpedo a place we love. read more

I'm a local and have gone to the Oldwick General Store on and off over the past 24 years. The breakfast and lunches are OK and perhaps a bit pricey for what you get considering the fact that there is no table service. The atmosphere is informal and at times noisy but I know a lot of the people who go there so it's friendly for me. You give the counter your order and your name and they yell your name out when your order is ready for pick-up / payment. You also have to bus your own table when you're done eating. The real gem at the Oldwick GS is their bakery. Try their pound cakes (OK, it's $10 a loaf but they're real good) including their marble, pumpkin and banana nut. All are moist and very tasty. Also, their large chocolate cake for $30 (ouch!) is out of this world. My wife and I brought one to a friend's house a few days before Xmas. Other invitees brought a cake from Cocoluxe in Peapack. Various other desserts were there too. There were 14 of us in total. In the end, the chocolate cake we brought was about 70% gone. The Cocoluxe cake was 30% gone. Yea, it's that good. Go to the Oldwick General Store with someone on a Sunday morning. Buy two large coffees and one of their pound cakes. Have a seat and dig in. Enjoy the locals as they come in and out and when you're done you'll have leftover pound cake for the rest of that week. It's the best breakfast deal they have. read more

You go back in time as soon as the doors are opened and you step inside. We had dinner at "57 Main Street" last week which was a nice surprise. The review from Ed K. in Califon is pretty funny and maybe somewhat true but mostly not. I live in Tewksbury and it does have its characters but so many nice people too. The Oldwick General Store, I can remember as a little kid when it was indeed a general store. Today it is a restaurant that provides top quality food. You have to like this type of atmosphere however. The food is somewhat pricey but the quality and quantity can't really be beat - try the almond danishes; gosh they're good. Some of the ladies in horsey pants look pretty good so I am not complaining like Ed was. The horse people that go there add to the charm. There are well off families here but not all are. Most have worked to get where they are - it wasn't handed to them. Many are from working class families. There are many business owners here too - not all went to college. I don't agree that families have ignored kids on the whole as Ed does. I would bet that there are more stay-at-home moms here than on average across Hunterdon and probably most of the state. Many dad's bring home large salaries so moms can stay at home. You ought to see the amount of parents who volunteer as chaperones for field trips here - there is usually a waiting list. We don't just have a PTA we have the Tewksbury education foundation too. Both provide needed funding for the schools as our tax money is diluted after it runs through the state and divided out to other municipalities who need it more than us (Hmmmmmm!) You know, its funny that we tell our kids to work really hard and one day you will do well and live in a nice place. All the work will pay off. I rarely write reviews but when the experience is so awful and service and product so egregiously poor, I cant help but act to warn future victims. DO NOT GO HERE. Despite a long standing reputation of being a good place, NEW OWNERSHIP has destroyed a once bustling eating place. The food quality, selection, freshness have all gone South while the prices have North. More insulting than the prices, $8.75 for dry Roast Beef on Wonderbread, is the attitude and snide comments you get from the counter people.
