Ole Ole Burrito Express is a solid Oakland favorite! The food is good, portions are generous, and the service is fast and friendly--exactly what you want when you're looking for a quick and satisfying meal. The steak quesadilla was delicious, and I really liked that they offer different wrap options, including a spinach wrap. Their burritos are also nicely made, good filling with avocado and delicious. There are plenty of choices on the menu, including traditional Mexican/Tex-Mex favorites as well as a surprisingly extensive selection of plant-based options. A little history: Ole Ole Burrito Express has been serving Oakland since 2011, originally establishing itself in the Uptown/Downtown area. Today, they have locations on Telegraph Avenue and MacArthur Boulevard, continuing to serve burritos, tacos, quesadillas and other Tex-Mex favorites. Their broad vegan menu has also become one of their distinguishing features. A kind of hole in the wall on Mac near the post office, clean, not too busy when I went in, & the lady behind the counter was nice. The kiosk ordering system was super easy to use and very intuitive. I ordered the surf & turf super burrito with no beans, no guacamole, sliced avocado instead (which I LOVE that they offer), rice, sour cream, jalapeños, and no pico de gallo. This thing was packed. Not one of those giant burritos that's 80% rice and disappointment. Every bite had steak, shrimp, avocado, and all the good stuff distributed throughout. The steak was flavorful, the shrimp were a good size, and the avocado was generous. The tortilla held up nicely, even with all the fillings, and the burrito was wrapped tight enough that I wasn't wearing half of it by the end of the meal. What I appreciated most was that the customizations were followed exactly. If you're someone who likes your burrito a very specific way, you know that's not always guaranteed. Yesterday was Taco Tuesday at Ole Ole Burrito. I eat lunch there every Tuesday without fail. As I waited for my order, two boys, aged around 13, came in looking for lunch. "How much is your cheapest burrito?" one asked the owner. "Do you want meat?" "Yeah." "$11.50 for a regular burrito, $12.95 for a super." This was met with loud guffaws. "$13.00 for a burrito!! HA HA HA!" It would have been futile for me to point out that the days of the $6 burrito have long since passed, but that they could still get three veggie tacos and a drink for $9. They clomped out without so much as a "thanks anyway." A moment later, through the thin shared wall, I could hear them ordering a pie from the take-out-only pizza place next door. Seven or eight minutes passed, when who should return to the taqueria but our frugal young heroes? One was carrying a large pizza box. I watched with interest. "Can we sit at one of your tables?" asked the same kid who had just laughed at the restaurant owner. "Sure," came the reply. The kids seated themselves and pitched into their pizza. The owner was out back when I left. I said to him, "You are a VERY nice guy!" and we shared a big laugh. This was the most entertaining part of my entire day. I am not sure that I am a fan of the ordering kiosk but used it anyway. The interior does not really invite you to stick around and eat. That said, for take away I think they are fine. My steak tacos were yummy, the shrimp burrito is very customizable (beans, tortilla, etc.) and it was super flavorful. The flautas were crunchy. I would have loved a little more spice, even the medium hot sauce (green and red) was not spicy so pick up the hot a least. The staff is very efficient in making and delivering the food. Totally disappointed I always order veggie taco salad, which has always been good. However today I ordered to go and there was no cheese, pico de gallo or avocado. Service is great but food is hit or miss. I have had some great food here and I had also had some pretty bad take out here. I came here on a Sunday night and called in. By the time I got to the restaurant, my food was ready. I ordered the carne asada fries and carne asada regular burrito. The fries were crispy and fully loaded. The box was at least 3lbs! I was a loyal regular customer at the Dimond location for the last 5 years until recently, and at the Telegraph location for more than 10 years before that. Recently, they've cut back on portions and value in a big way. When I asked the owner and manager about it, they could not have been more provocatively rude. If you don't want a particular ingredient, they now have a crude NO SUBSTITIONS policy. They have a new rigid policy of "only 4 ounces of any ingredient, " and NO SUBSTITUTIONS. Imagine my surprise to have vastly reduced portions on my order, and my friend got a bowl that was half full, because he doesn't want some ingredients, and they won't supplement others. Points for being one of the few Mexican food places that offers a normal burrito without meat, rather than having the only veggie option include zucchini, and a bunch of random vegetables. I thought it was bland and just OK. Pinto beans were just slightly undercooked. Rice had no flavor. Salsa was interesting (unusual flavor) and pretty good but there was none on the actual burrito and they didn't provide enough on the side. Chips were good. Wow, how disappointing - this used to be our favorite place to get take out across all forms of food in the area, which is really saying something. We have been going to this mini chain of Ole Ole's starting almost 15 years ago with the location on Clay. As the years went by we settled on getting dinners from the MacArthur location. Yesterday, I called to order food like I literally had done more than 100 times before. No answer. Now I see the you can only order online and the menu has changed dramatically. I went with something I knew - super tacos. I ordered 2 types and as I was driving there to pick them up, Ole Ole called me (yes, in my contacts!) and said they were out of one of the meats. I substituted, picked them up and headed home. one of the contiainers of tacos looked like it had been turned upside down so Iilterally had to try to reconstruct it. However, even reconstructed, it seemed like this was just a different taco than what I had in the past - especailly with more sour cream. What really stood out was how bad the tortillas were - they seemed like the trader joes corn tortillas, which are horrible unless you heat them up, and these were definitely not heated up/grilled before assembly. I'd probably not be writing this review if I didn't have horrible heartburn in the middle of the night followed by diarrhea in the morning. Always check to make sure your order is correct when ordering from the MacArthur location. For some reason, different people who have taken our phone orders over the last couple years have been extremely inconsistent in correctly putting down what we ask for. I'd love to know that a "super" anything is going to include avocado and sour cream every time. The saltiness of the meat really needs those "super" items to balance out the flavor. My favorite place for Nachos! I usually order the carne asada super nachos with no beans (my preference, don't come for me) lol. With the super nacho, you also get sour cream, salsa, and avocados on it. Definitely not a plain jane. The workers are always so nice when I ask for additional salsa. This was my first and last time ordering from this place. I was really looking forward to having a burrito for dinner tonight and stumbled across this place. I ordered for delivery, but what i received did not match the description at all. I ordered the lengua burrito, which says comes with the meat, beans, rice, pico de Gallo, "super cheese", don't know what that means, avocado and sour cream. As you can see, no cheese, no sour cream, and no avocado. I also asked for limes, jalapeños and carrots on the side, got the tiny limes, barely squeezable, and no carrots or avocado. The pico de Gallo didn't taste fresh. The tomatoes tasted a day old as if it were leftover from the previous day. The beans weren't soft enough, and overall the burrito was just dry. Very disappointing. My bf ordered a steak super burrito, with the avocado on the side, definitely no avocado on the side. Had we not ordered EXTRA sour cream, he may not have gotten it either. So now I'm starting to think i wasted $1.25 for extra but for what we were supposed get. We paid a total of $28 for this meal, $4 for delivery fee. We didn't get our requests and the burrito did not come out the way they advertise. I am very disappointed and hope that others will stumble across this review.
