I was killing time and thought I'd try this place out of curiosity d/t the recent 3 and 1 star reviews. It's a pretty standard burrito place with fairly standard prices. The flavors were bland. I ordered a chile verde super burrito and it definitely needed more pico and sour cream. The pork was in pretty huge chunks, which has pros and cons. Pro= not skimping on meat. Con= imbalance of flavors in each bite, and the pork didn't taste like chile verde which probably could have been remedied if the pieces were smaller and had more surface area for sauce. Hm. I added some of the tomatillo salsa (given with chips) to the burrito which improved the flavor with its acidity. I give it a solid 3.5 stars. read more

I came here because I used to like this place. Not anymore. I ordered two chicken picante tacos & a side of refried beans. This came to $17 before tax. If you read the description on the menu, it does say a sweet and spicy sauce is on the chicken. I missed the sweet part. It is unforgivably sweet in my opinion. The idea of putting anything sweet on savory food is disgusting to me. However, when I mentioned to the staff that I'm a diabetic and cannot eat this, they didn't offer up to mitigate the problem in anyway. I would've wiped the sauce off to eat the chicken, but it was so dry and otherwise tasteless that it just wasn't worth it. The refried beans are so salty that I think it's not healthy to eat these either. They're far from creamy. They have gigantic chunks of bean in them. They might be delicious if you're used to prison food. There's only cold water in the laboratory and the air from the air dryer is also very cold. No soap in the soap dispenser. The other patrons today look like people who would be happy with Taco Bell and, for the price, at least the beans would taste good. read more

Got two fish tacos and a chicken honey burrito. The fish tacos were ok, super fresh veggies, avocado and delicious mayo sauce, however, the fish was not that great. Tasted super fishy.... We drive by this place all the time so we had to stop and try it. We each got our own burrito the three of us. I got the steak burrito with beans and rice. "There is nothing super about the super burrito" quotes the hubbs the only difference between the regular and super is they put cheese and sour cream and guacamole the sizes are all the same, he also asked for red salsa inside the with pork but they did not do that for him, although he says the park Meat was very juicy and not dry. Child number two says the burrito was good but said the pork was dry which is surprising since it's I cooked in the salsa verde. They also give tortilla chips and salsa. The salsa is also decent nothing too bad and not at all spicy overall it's a good place prices are very good and the quality is good too. I'm not sure if we'd come back. I've walked by this place a bunch of times and finally decided to try it out. My boyfriend and I got the carne asada super burrito (no beans) and it came with chips and salsa and we added a side of guacamole. The burritos were good but nothing outstanding, although we did appreciate the large portion of meat. We typically like our carne asada in smaller pieces and crispy, which this was not but it was still good. I don't think I would've enjoyed the burrito as much without the salsa. The salsa was really good and had a kick too it! The guacamole was really really good too. We would definitely get the guacamole again to go with our chips. I'm also intrigued by the other special burritos they have on their menu and the pork verde. Everything is reasonably priced for what you get. We will definitely be back to try some other items! Having lived in Oakland my whole life, I was happy to have been taken to my boyfriends favorite fish taco spot. A few weeks prior, I had taken him to mine. His was hands down the winner. I've driven by this burrito shop for years and never gone inside to try. The fish taco's are sauteed and put on a double tortilla with lettuce, pico, fish and topped with a generous amount of avocado. The best thing about these taco's is the sauce that they put on top. The smokey chipotle sauce, makes it PERFECTION. The staff is beyond friendly. Next time, I am going to ask for extra chipotle sauce to put on top...it is so mouth watering. Plus their chips and salsa are scrumptious as well. Looking forward to trying more things on their menu. Alway's trust the hole in the walls to have the best!!! read more

I love their taco salads. I especially love the salad dressing. I usually order it with grilled steak. I've been having this taco salad pretty regularly. Once, the steak was particularly grisly and I probably should've complained, but it was only that one time. Now, you can't help yourself to the containers of hot sauce. A decent little hole in the wall Mexican food shop located in the heart of Rockridge! I used to frequent their Castro Valley location, so I was happy to find out that they had a location nearby when I started working in Oakland. My staff and I frequent this spot for lunch because it's cheap, fast, and convenient. Although they are known for their burritos, I almost always get their chicken enchilada plate. I love the red sauce that they use on their enchiladas because it's really spicy and I'm a true lover of spice! My employees really enjoy their burritos and salsa here. You can get a decent sized burrito or combo plate here for under $10 easily. I've never sat down and eaten at this location as I usually call ahead and pick up my order to go. This location is tiny and only has about 4 tables inside for seating. I would recommend calling ahead of time and ordering to go because they can have a line out the door during lunch time. There's nothing fancy about this place, so if you're looking for a place to dine in, this is probably not a good fit. However, they are consistent and I've never encountered an issue with their food. I really hate that they don't provide free chips with their salsa. I really like all of their salsas here and my staff always asks for extra green salsa. The service here is meh. Nothing bad but nothing exceptional. The parking... well let's just say that they do have a parking lot, but good luck trying to get in and out of that bad boy! Whoever constructed that parking lot was clearly not thinking. I'm sure so many "almost" accidents occur daily right in that parking lot. Street parking in terrible since this place is located downtown off of College Ave. I purposely order my food early to avoid the traffic and parking pains. If you know anything of my burrito reviews then you're aware...I'm a connoisseur and these burritos are good, not the best but certainly prepared by Mexican women, authentic, clean and they've got hella options! In my opinion- the best part is always that I can tell when grilled chicken hasn't been poached by red meat on the grill,and The Burrito Shop is great for keeping flavors and meats independent of one another On the grill and inside your burrito. They have fresh chips and this is just a great place to stop for a burrito if you're in the area and in the mood. It's a small shop good for lunch but not really great for parties and they certainly don't have margaritas. read more

In the last week you introduced a new system that charges $2 to pay with a card , regardless of whether it is credit or debit. First, there is no notification that this charge will be added for paying with a card. Is this legal? Second, in every business I have worked for debit card payments were preferred, especially over cash, because they saved time and accounting costs. If this charge is generated by the cost of using this new payment system, you should reconsider the vendor. If this is a new source of revenue for you, I am deeply disappointed. My Acapulco burrito was supposed to come with a number of things; e.g., black beans, rice, guacamole, etc. I also requested cebolla (onions) for which I was charged an extra buck. Two stars because, while based on this one visit it should be one star, we had good service and food previously -- but not this time. With take out, places should want us to return. I understand the one-and-done philosophy of tourist traps and in isolated areas, but this had become our Oakland regular spot. How can we trust a take out order? Absolutely terrible. Should have listened to the other reviews but sadly my burrito craving took over... All I wanted was a nice big beans-and-rice burrito. When I walked in, the place smelled like a public bathroom (they must have just cleaned it? It smelled like pungent soap... Should have been a first clue to walk right back out the door...) I ordered the "classic veggie", which was supposed to have pinto beans, rice, lettuce, and pico de gallo. I ordered it on a "spinach" tortilla. Plus chips. Total was $7.65. What I got was a rubbery, obviously-artificially-colored bright green tortilla full of rice, a MINISCULE amount of beans, a tiny bit of shredded lettuce, and NO pico or tomatoes to speak of. There is no flavor to the burrito at all, it's just a pile of rice inside a plasticy green dough. And, the other reviewers are right, they give you store-bought chips from a bag. Embarrassing. I love this place! I eat here about once a week, and I've rarely had a less-than-stellar experience. The food is always authentic and pretty great (with a little variation based on who makes your burrito etc) and the servers are always very helpful (especially if you do basic human things like say please and thank you). Cost is comparable to what you would pay at a regular street-side taco truck in the area, but the quality is consistently higher. There are lots of ways to customize your burrito/your order for a few extra bucks. My go-to order is a Spicy Pork Super Burrito (with guacamole of course), but I also really like the different burritos off their 'gourmet' menu. The portion sizes are always a little more than I expect for the price. $8-12 dollars for a huge super burrito with all the trimmings is a solid deal. Yes, just like at every other Mexican restaurant in America, guacamole is always extra. It's been there since 1979, but I feel a little bad for this hole-in-the-wall shop designed for grabbing a quick bite, because now it sits near along a row of relatively upscale restaurants, in a part of town where you're either pretty rich or pretty poor. So it's pretty expensive to operate there, and the authentic food is cooked and served by authentic Latinas, but some people try to get free stuff by complaining about their order after eating 3/4 of it (I've seen it happen twice) OR they leave low-star reviews for very dumb reasons (like playing mariachi music, or not being immediately understood by an ESL cook). It's The Burrito Shop, not Le French Burrito Palace or Uncle Joe's American-Style Burritos, and if you're not spoiled rotten by Ubersnob food or hunting for a free meal then you should try this place. DO NOT DRINK WATER FROM HERE. I got a cup and had a big gulp. I don't know if they even care but water tasted disgusting. I started to cough really bad. Then I noticed all these black and yellow particles floating in the water. I poured it out. I really hope it doesn't get me sick. If the water line that is being used for soda is dirty, I wouldn't drink anything from the soda machine. I got the burrito with guacamole. Food was below average. Regardless, I ate it because I already paid for it and was starving. Even though I was hungry, I couldn't finish it because it just didn't taste all that good. I ended up throwing away half of the burrito. Waste of money. I am not sure how this place stays in business...
