I have been helping different participants go here for years. I believe I have been taking…read moreparticipants for about 7 years. This is a wonderful outdoor activity for many participants that are not usually able to do things outside. In general there seem to be at the upper end- 100 volunteers to at most 50 participants, it is a huge operation- similar to Spec Olympics except in a smaller venue. Check in is usually around 9 am and the first surfers go out around 9:30. They have sheets that they write their time for surfing and it takes time to get everyone out onto the ocean. There is open guided swimming. At the very first start of the organization, there was paddle small canoes. I haven't seen them lately and I don't know if they will bring that back- but it took a long time to get a turn for participantsand that may have played a factor on having those activiites. Usually there is food of some kind for participants. Everyone is so willing to be as helpful as they can and it really is a surfing community giving back to HI and the world. There have been a few local and antional tv shows taht feature Access. Wonderful volunteers and a wonderful beach to have a wonderful day at the beach. If I could give negative stars I would. I don't do this lightly, however I paid this company to…read morecome out and repair my Upright X20N scissor lift several months ago in which they finally showed up after a few no shows (Fred), so he got the it running but told me it has a faulty up/down switch, I asked could for them to order another and he replied that they could not since they did not know the serial number. Last week, I called them again where Fred told he would come to get it going did not show again after he promised to, I was then passed on to Barry, I assumed is the manager of the repairs department, he in fact turns out to be the owner. They sent a different tech over, Jeremy, in which he seems very earnest and he thought it maybe the relays, so it was decided to order 5 new relays for the machine. This morning I called to check up on the progress and spoke with Jeremy, whereas he told me that they had three new machines that they are working on for their company and that they had no time to complete my repairs and that he/they would call me (in the future, no estimated time) when they had time to deal with my machine. I had already paid them for a service that was not completed correctly. Talk about being blown off, I've never had a company, in my 56 years, ever do something so unprofessional, all they had to do was at the minimum, call and say we had something come up that has caused a delay in servicing your equipment, with an estimated time for my repairs, so simple and respectful. So I just got off the phone with Barry, the owner, where he told me that they had in fact had some machines that needed to get up and running for their business and that they needed to look at the broad picture of their business and they choose to get that done first. So, bottom line, the customer did and does not come first in their business model. A final note, he did apologize, but no refund to me for wasted monies on the bad repair job. Personal Note: Go to Bobs Equipment for Proper service and equipment, they told me that they will be here within the hour.

The remains of paternal great grandfather lie here. I had never met him, but have heard some…read morecolorful stories about this brave guy who came to Hawaii from China many years ago. On his marker, in Chinese characters, the name of his hometown is listed as "Sam Sui" or Three Waters. I can also read his surname, "Luke", and the month, February. I'm not sure if February is his birth month or not. It seems ironic that my great grandfather is buried here, in this rundown little unknown cemetery while his son, my grandfather, is buried at the National Memorial Cemetery (with military honors) right above him on the same mountain in Honolulu. Why is Yee King Tong Cemetery in disrepair? My father and his cousins used to give monetary donations, but saw no results, so they stopped contributing and now are deceased. What becomes of us after we pass? Will the next generation remember us? My cousins' children and my nieces and nephews don't seem very interested in carrying on these traditions. School, work, sports activities, and music lessons take up much of their spare time... We used to visit the graves every year during "ching ming" or "bai sahn", the annual cleaning of the headstones in Chinese culture. It was a grand family reunion with red candles, sticks of incense, firecrackers, food, whiskey, tea, and water. That time has long gone because they said that these rituals may cease when the eldest ancestor has reached 100 years of age. This is a fond memory and I'm thankful to Yelp for allowing me to store these thoughts somewhere... filed away in virtual space...

Just below the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific lies Yee King Tong Cemetery, tucked away…read morein a residential neighborhood, almost forgotten-looking in appearance if it weren't for the fact that there were a few new headstones. I couldn't post a lot of the pictures of the headstones as I later discovered that the shiny granite reflected my image in most of the shots and I didn't think it would be very respectful for me to post those. The cemetery is intersected in half by Auwaiolimu Street. The mountain-side cemetery is further intersected in half by a chain link fence and on the other side of that fence is an older looking cemetery. It may be Tong Sing Tong Cemetery, I was not sure as I did not have the time to explore (hubby was sitting in the car looking bored). Across the street, Yee King Tong is intersected again but Uluhaimalama Cemetery - or Uluhaimalama Garden, which is a National historical monument. Yee King Tong is pretty dry, with a few scatterings of vegetation and floral offerings. It seems to be a Bring Your Own Water and supplies as I did not see a water spigot/tap or even a bench. The only thing I saw was a trash can that was chained up to the entrance of the cemetery. Across the street appears to be the church itself, and I am sure they have the necessary amenities. Park on the street. If you are not able to climb stairs you may run into a problem as this is a very old cemetery with no ramp/wheelchair access. There is not a lot of information for Yee King Tong on the web and it would be interesting to do some further research as to the history of this resting place.
