Piggybacking on my review of Aiea Collision Center (check em go check em go! :) I needed a rental car while my van was in the shop. I definitely procrastinated on renting one because I know it's expensive. My parents and they referred me to Lucky Owl because they heard my niece use them when she comes to town. So I went online and their prices were reasonable and they offer a kamaʻāina discount! I booked online and called them to confirm all the details. They really helped me out in my time of need. All of their employees as super nice, helpful, and friendly! They all seem really happy working for this company and that is a joy to see. Justin was the employee I spoke with and he was super nice. They are located in Mapunapuna near Fisher Hawai'i. Don't blink or you'll miss the turn into their driveway! There are lots of vehicles to rent, so if you're ever in need of a rental--- visit them! We had a mishap with the key fob not working while we were at the beach on the east side of the island. When we realized it wasn't working, we immediately opened up the fob and found old looking corrosion inside around the battery area. We put a new battery in it and left it open to dry out (if moisture had gotten in it). After troubleshooting to no avail, I called the company and they sent someone out charging a $75 "roadside assistance fee" where a representative brought out a spare key fob. Unfortunately, the replacement fob did not start the car (or even unlock/lock the car). The representative was friendly, but not knowledgeable on other troubleshooting steps to get us back on the road. With the replacement fob taken apart (to swap/replace the battery) the original fob eventually started the car. We even tested it further by turning off and on the car a few times to make sure the old fob was working again. We then drove the vehicle to our next destination, and when we went to leave the car wouldn't start again... we made the most of it and had dinner while further drying out the original fob to see if that would help. In the meantime the company sent a replacement vehicle (at no additional charge). When the rep went to start the original car, it stated right away. The following day, I received a voicemail to go over the additional replacement fob and roadside assistance charges. The voicemail said to reference the email and/or call back for questions. I never received the email after 10 minutes of checking, and then I got a large credit card notification; $350 for the damaged key and $75 for the roadside assistance. I didn't appreciate being charged without being talked to first. When I immediately called back to politely ask some clarifying questions, the person on the phone was very rude and raised his voice to me and my wife. Given that the original fob appeared to have prior water damage and the fact that it did start the car (after drying out, replacing the battery) it was disappointing to be charged $425 for something that may, or may not, have been our fault. And to then be yelled at for asking questions. At the end of the day, the whole ordeal cost us valuable vacation time, added stress, and drastically altered our plans. The car rental itself was affordable but the first car we ended up with was older and a little dingy. read more

This place has the best rates for rental cars, cheaper than Costco (although Costco does offer free 2nd driver). It's only for Honolulu car rental. The cars aren't pristine-they're run of the mill used cars with the usual dents and scratches-but they run well and have never given us any trouble. Bonus- if you're a tourist, your car will blend right in and lessen your chance of getting broken into! :) They also have shuttle service to and from their Mapunapuna location in an industrial area to the airport. There's a big white sign and the front has the name. The staff are super helpful and friendly and pick up and drop off is easy peasy! read more

Wow, truly a breath of fresh air in the car rental business. Hands down one of the best I've experienced. I have traveled a lot for work/pleasure and know how to navigate rental car agencies pretty well. Every once in a while they get one over me, especially recent with the electric vehicle push. I also almost always avoid off airport rentals as a rule. Given the price and the glowing reviews I thought I would give Lucky Owl a shot. I'm very glad I did. The pickup process was super easy, just walked across the street from the southwest baggage claim where the pickup spot #4 was designated. Made the call and they were there rather quick. At the counter there was no sales push or tactics, they just verified my ID and CC then handed me the keys. Their rules were clearly laid out next to the window. They took photos of the cars condition and encouraged me to do the same. I also received the exact car stated on my reservation. No issues with the car for the 2 weeks we were there. Someone mentioned you blend in with their cars as a local, I don't know how but it did feel that way, hahaha. I especially liked the rubber floor mats which made cleaning easy. My one recommendation would be a trunk/hatch rubber mat. I know they are much harder to come by, but it would help with sandy beach gear. Speaking of, they even offer to rent beach gear! My airbnb came with some, but its great to know for next time. Drop off was just as easy as pickup. Their rental terms mention excess sand has a fee and there is a Texaco close to their location with vacuums. I wasn't sure if we had reached the "excess" level but why not treat the car with respect and clean up after yourself since Lucky Owl treated us well. When I got back they took a couple photos of the condition just like the pickup and had the shuttle ready to take me to the airport. No question I will be renting from here again next time in Oahu! They also have some friendly cats to greet you. read more

I needed a rental car for the weekend to attend an event in Mililani. I was able to book the car on Friday afternoon. I caught an uber to their Māpunapuna location and was greeted by Jaysin at 8:00 a.m. He was working by himself and was able to keep things moving professionally and kept all his customers apprised. There were two customers before me and although they were short-staffed, Jaysin maintained his cool. He managed to check in an incoming rental and get 3 cars out within a 1/2 hour time. A Google search led me to this company. I compared prices with several rental car companies and this establishment offered the best pricing. I made a reservation online and received a confirmation email. Reminders were received via text. Airport shuttle pick-up/drop-off is offered between 8am - 5:45pm daily. Have your license and proof of insurance ready during pick-up. The vehicle we rented was scratched up and dented, but there were no performance issues. It ran well and had good gas mileage. Best service and staff, both when picking up and returning vehicle, I needed a large van last minute and booked it one month prior to when i needed it. None of the major rental companies had anything available. Lucky owl had a couple of options and i choose the GMC. When picking up vehicle, they take pics of the vehicle and show you all the defects they have before you sign for it. I thought that was awesome. I also got a booster chair for $5 a day and it was nice and clean with no smells, Will definitely be a repeat customer, will try the smaller vehicles when i am in need again. The service to get my car was quick enough. The shuttle service from the airport was easy to manage. The car I rented was not in good shape. Dents and scratches everywhere and over 10 years old. That was fine because it was a budget rental car company. However, the car itself did not run well. I had to floor the accelerator just to get the car moving. I brought the car back with no issues, and was given the OK after the inspection. 15 minutes after I left the lot, I got a call that I needed to come back because they claimed they found a scratch that wasn't there before I rented it. The person on the phone was extremely rude to me and said if I didn't come back and sign the incident report, I would forfeit my deposit. This is a very shady way to do business, and I suggest going to a regular car rental company instead like Enterprise or Budget. Whatever money you save here is not worth this trouble. I have serious doubts that the money they got from my insurance will be used to fix the alleged 'damage' on this car, as there were dents and scratches all over it beforehand. read more
