The quiche was also par. The biggest disappointment was the cake. I thought it was what they were known for but it was nothing special. Olexa's decor makes it seem like you're at Epcot. It was described to me as the perfect "girl lunch" spot. However, my biggest issue is with their service. Depending on the staff, you could spend 45 minutes to over 2 hours for lunch. I would only recommend going with a couple friends, as the space is not super accommodating for large groups. As for the food, there's a variety of salads, sandwiches, and other baked goods. I think most of their meals can be made at home, which may be more time efficient/convenient than a long wait. Although most people rave about their dessert, I find their cake too sweet for my preference. You can walk in a buy a pre-packaged slice to-go, but they have more options when dining in. read more

Olexa's is one of my favorite places to visit for cake and for a sandwich/soup lunch combo. They always have trios where you can get soup, a sandwich, and a salad. I have had quite a few items from Olexa's, as it is a part of my regular lunch rotation. The staff takes extra precautions and they are always friendly. Even when there is a wait, it is not for very long. They always manage to get your food out in a timely manner when you are dining in. If you are stopping there for dessert or to pick up, they have a separate section where you can place TO GO orders. The staff will also help you decide if you are a first timer and don't know which cake to get. The desserts are so good. They probably have some of the best cakes in Birmingham. I love getting their Cloud 9 dessert. It comes in a martini glass and the cake is smashed and it comes with whipped cream and strawberries. It is heavenly!!! I have a hard time deciding which is my favorite cake, but it is definitely between the chocolate and red velvet. While they are known for their cakes, please do not sleep on the other menu items. While I have not had their cafe food before, I have had their cakes numerous times. It is a favorite for my family and Birminghamians everywhere! They are a professional organization located in the middle of Crestline Village. And I have never been disappointed by their product. Most recently, we got my sister's birthday cake from them. It was their chocolate that can be found in my pictures. The decorating was great and the cake itself was phenomenal. They do a very rich butter cream icing. They have several side salads and I particularly like the Caesar. My lunch partners like the garden salad. The turkey crunch sandwich is good, the steak salad very good and I will try the crepes next. Warm chocolate cake with ice cream or the vanilla buttercream cake room temp are my favorites and the perfect finish to the trio lunch. Yesterday was my first time at Olexa's and the experience was great. Our waitress was very helpful with her recommendations for a first-timer. She recommended the Smoked Turkey Sandwich with a side salad. It was delicious and came out quickly given there was a full house at lunchtime. We also had a slice of the quiche of the day which was also amazing. By the end of my meal, I was very full but of course, there's always room for dessert. Pros: Cute little cafe in a foo foo part of town. Very friendly staff with average bistro type food. Southwest salad was great with good flavoring. Cons: Water on the tap was heavy on the chlorine taste. My wife got a slice of vanilla creme cake which was fine, but plain. We both tasted and said at the same time "Walmart". Olexa's catered our New Employee Orientation for November and now January. January- I had the Beef and Cheddar Panini with a salad. Despite the mixed greens which are not my favorite type, the salad was good. In addition to the mixed greens included strawberries, mandarin oranges and walnuts. Dressing was a fruit based vinaigrette. Cloud Nine dessert is still the best part. November- Chicken and Pesto Panini was pretty good. Probably would have been better if I had been able to eat when it first arrived. Corn and Bean salad was good just too small a quantity. Expected more than just plain Ruffles chips. I've been wanting to try to Olexa's for sometime now, and I'm glad i did. We ordered the Southwest salad (not pictured) it was a pretty big salad, filled the whole plate (Although for $12.99 it should be large) it was really good with quality ingredients and the presentation was beautiful (wish i wouldv'e gotten a picture). Its good for 2 people to share or a meal for one if u are very hungry.. I also ordered the Portabello and Smoked Gouda Panini which is supposed to contain: Marinated portabello mushrooms with caramelized onions, roasted red pepper and smoked Gouda cheese with our cheddar Chardonnay sauce on focaccia...my problem is that i felt it mostly was just bread..the focaccia slices were really thick and the ingredients inside were lacking. There were some mushrooms but i dont think they were portabello and there were no carmelized onions and barely and roasted red pepper..just some of their Chardonnay Sauce. For a sandwhich which was $12 it was very underwhelming. I also added the tomato bisque to my order for about $2.50. The bisque is creamy but on the sweeter side so not my favorite. Lastly i ordered a slice of chocolate cake to go. It was DELICIOUS. This place does know how to do cake, which i would hope because they bake cakes for events. The total came out to be $36 not too bad, a little on the pricy side for lunch but, it is in mountain brook so it's expected. The service was good and the ambiance is cute, not too bougie. The salad and cake were good which is why they got 3 stars. Overall i'd say this place is average it could do a tad better in the taste department for the prices and actually put whats listed in their sandwhiches. This is a cute place for the "ladies who lunch" crowd - it's very popular, so come outside of peak hours or be prepared to wait a bit. Parking is a premium too but there's a good sized lot to the rear of the restaurant and we found a spot there with no problem. I love the menu - so many tasty choices meant that it was hard to decide! Tons of sandwich choices, homemade soups and delicious salads - not to mention the tempting pastry case. I went with the daily quiche (ham & cheese) which is served with a salad and soup. Portions are on the small side, but perfect for lunch. My quiche was really good but could have been served a bit warmer. The salad of greens + balsamic was simple, but delicious. I opted for the chicken tortilla soup and it was full of chicken chunks and fresh veggies. I'd happily order any (or all) of this again! The person I was lunching with insisted we try some of their famous dessert - he didn't have to try to hard to convince me... We ended up with the caramel apple pie and it was a bit of a letdown honestly. The apple filling was way, way, way too sweet and not especially caramel-y. What was outstanding was their homemade whipped cream - it reminded me of Chantilly. Service was fast, efficient and friendly - we never had to wait for a refill which was impressive considering how busy they were. Ordered a birthday cake for my husband and picked it up as scheduled. On the way home while holding the cake on my lap, the top two halves slid off the bottom two halves and into the cake box. I slid them back into place and tried to preserve the look as best I could. When we sliced the cake it was obvious that there wasn't frosting between the layers, hence the sliding of the top half of the cake. On Saturday, April 22, 2023, I had my daughter's bridal shower at Olexa's. Since I live in New Orleans, I found Kristen, the catering manager, extremely easy to work with and very attentive to my concerns and questions. The food was wonderful, and the service was terrific. The only thing I wished was that they put our long table on the back wall near the restrooms, so we didn't feel like we were intruding on the other guests. Everyone loved their lunch. We ordered the "Party Pleaser" for lunch along with mini muffins on the table and of course the famous cake for dessert. The raspberry lemonade carafes on the table were also a big hit. I won a gift card at a fund raiser to Olexa's Cafe. I ordered a pumpkin and apple pie for Thanksgiving and I took our visiting family for lunch. It was busy for lunch on a Monday. There were no tables for a larger group of 10. We had to wait awhile for another group to leave. Our server was excellent, the food was great. I couldn't help but notice that this was a woman's restaurant. The woman out numbered men by 20-1. Each of the pies were in a large box. They were nicely decorated. We tried them both at thanksgiving of course. The apple was great. Very rich. The pumpkin was nothing special. Just a regular pumpkin pie, but I guess there isn't much you can do to make a pumpkin pie outstanding. Would recommend both the bakery and cafe. Enjoy! read more
