Olive Tree Cafe is located in the Kahala Mall Complex closest to Kilauea Avenue. They are a BYOB restaurant and it's great that there is a wine shop located right next door to the restaurant. However, if you forget your own glassware there is a silly $1 corkage fee to pay for the use of their glass. It's not even a wine glass but just a glass cup. I was not happy about the fee but okay, live and learn. Next time I'll bring my own stemware. About the food, you order at the counter and then when your order is ready you come back and pay. I don't especially care for this style because I would prefer to pay when I order so I can wash my hands and then eat with Clean Hands especially if some of the food is finger food like pita bread with hummus. About the food, it's just okay. Honestly I thought there was too much olive oil on the hummus. There is inside and outside seating. Surprisingly, outside is quieter and cooler. But hey they do take out and it's BYOB there so what was i thinking? The soulvakis, falafels, and Greek salad is a winner! Supposedly, this is the best Greek restaurant in town, so I waited to take the bus here from Waikiki. It takes a while for the food to be made, but they won't let you sit down to wait. They also don't let you eat the food on site once you have received it. You have to take it to go. So, I had to wait for the bus to go back to Waikiki, and the bus stop outside the restaurant is full of homeless people, so there is no place to sit there also. By the time I got home to my apartment, all I can say is that the food was OK, but I imagine it is good while fresh. I can only recommend this restaurant if you live nearby and are driving there to wait for your food in your car. Hopefully, soon, they will let people eat inside and sit down while waiting for food. This place is an absolute gem! Whenever I dine here, I just create the best memories with friends. I usually reserve a table outside first (they only have outside seating), especially because this place gets crowded very easily. Then I go inside to order. I usually share the hummus, a salad, salami and cheese plate, lamb souvlaki, and baklava. They will call your name when your food is ready and then you pay. They are CASH ONLY. While waiting for my food, I go next door and grab some beers, which pairs nicely with the Greek food. Olive Tree Cafe has the cutest glass cups that you can drink out of. Honestly it is 50% of the reason why I love eating here. I feel more European! Food wise, everything tastes delicious. Their hummus and pita bread is SO good. And the baklava is worth it! They only have one cashier, so ordering can take a while on a busy night, but the food comes out pretty quickly. Overall, it is a cozy atmosphere. I've been coming here for years, but today was the first time since covid. They're not open for dine in yet. I recommend calling in your order because they usually take a while. It's not fast food - everything is homemade to order. I called at 6pm on a Wednesday and the wait was 25-30 minutes. The falafel is tender, moist and flavorful. It comes with 8 pieces and hummus in a pita with a side salad. The only thing is that I wish it came with more salad. I love lots of veggies. I love lamb, and the lamb souvlaki and shwarma are really good here. Baba ganoush is my favorite appetizer. Smoky and tasty, and comes with 2 heaping scoops & the right amout of pita. Some reviews say it's pricey for what you get here, but I don't think you can find this quality food for any cheaper. I mean, a falafel pita from Pita Pit is $11.25. It's worth the 21 cents more to come here. It's a million times better.. a no-brainer. If you're a big eater, adding an app and maybe a dessert should make you full. How can you not get baklava when you're here? Cash or check only, and they make the menu prices in weird cents that so everything comes out to whole dollars after tax. Well first things first. I didn't get my order so I can't really review the fresh fish Souvlaki. The rest of my party said the food was okay but I wouldn't know since I guess mine is still at the restaurant. I hate when you get home after waiting 20 minutes for your order (there is no Dine-in due to Covid) and you don't get your food. I should have double checked but I guess I was too trusting of the staff to put my food in the bag. Also I had to run to the bank to get cash because they don't accept credit cards for whatever reason. Luckily there is a Bank of Hawaii nearby so I was able to hit an ATM. There might have been a sign telling us this but I didn't see it. I got to find out when I pulled out my wallet to pay. Also there is only 4 customers allowed in the building so get ready to wait in your car after you put in your order. I guess it would have been smarter to have ordered ahead of time but there will not be a second time so the point is moot. read more

Tried and true! So glad they are still serving delicious food to the community! Remember cash only, and no delivery partner, but it's worth it! We always get the babaganoush (they do it the best here!) and lamb souvlaki (New Zealand lamb). Such great value for the price. Olive Tree Cafe has a really good thing going. They offer decent Greek food (not exceptional by any measure, however) at a price definitely on the high side for the smallish portions they serve. So what's the deal? Why isn't this a one or two star place, and why do they always seem to be so crowded? Two reasons: first, it's an order-at-the-counter place, so tipping isnt required. Second, and more important, is that the owners have worked out a clever way of avoiding having to charge an arm and a leg for alcohol at your meal. Normally, when you go to a decent but basically average place you can expect to spend about $7-10 on a glass of wine, or at least $30 for a bottle. But the Olive Tree Cafe doesn't serve wine, instead encouraging you to buy it next door at a much cheaper price (still profiting the wine shop, of course) and charging you a dollar use charge for the glass in lieu of a corkage fee. So for a couple of bucks and the price of a bottle (say, $12-15), you save some greenbacks on the price of a nice bottle of wine that would otherwise come from the restaurant directly at a much higher price. Tonight, I had the Chicken kabob platter with salad instead of pita bread. This was OK, but not filling. One small skewer consisting of five pieces of chicken breast wasn't enough for $13+. The salad was nice but I had to order side dishes. There is nothing wrong with the food, and I like it. I just wish the portions were bigger. read more

It's been years since dining at the Olive Tree. That's because they've been so popular we didn't have the time to wait. It was late and we thought there was a chance we'd get a table and the line would be short. It was :) The menu looks the same and the price increase didn't seem to change much. We enjoyed the same dishes we remembered... Baba Ghanoush, Tabouleh, Souvlaki and Falafel. The 48 cent BYOB charge was very reasonable. Incredible!!!!!! The ahi and salmon (special of the day) souvlaki (15$) was a revelation, deliciously soft fish! The avgolemeno soup (5$) was very interesting and tasty. The dolmadakia (6$) and baba ghanoush (6$) were also quite good, though less revelatory than the souvlaki. The cashier seemed a little surprised at my leaving a tip, which is a disappointing sign in the US. Leaving a tip even on takeout (it's takeout only right now) is polite!! What happened to this place?! When I lived in Hawaii I would go here almost every week. I have a couple of friends that just moved to the island so I wanted to introduce them to one of my favorite places. We walked in and asked the owner if there was table service outside. He told us it was take out only because they didn't have enough workers for table service...completely understandable. I asked him if it was ok for us to use a table outside to eat and clean up after ourselves...he snapped and yelled at me reiterating that there's no table service because he didn't have enough workers. The room went completely silent and my friends and I felt so uncomfortable. If I was alone I would have walked out. He was SO RUDE and so unprofessional. On top of all that the food was not as good as it used to be. I was so excited to take my friends here but it was so disappointing and needless to say we're never going back! read more

I think tonight was my first time there; we'd try to come before, but it's always so busy! We had the Dolmadakia (stuffed grape leaves), Braised Lamb Leg (Wednesday night special), & I had the Fish Souvlaki. The food is exceptional! (No wonder they're always busy!) Luckily, they had a few tables available, so we ate there. The Dolmadakia were so soft, they practically melt in my mouth! The Braised Lamb was so tender & flavorful, I could've eaten it w/out the tomato sauce. And my Fish Souvlaki was perfect! I love their salad dressing as well. Very delicious Greek food! I am a fan of Greek food, so it's hard to disappoint me, but I'd have to say this tiny little restaurant offers fresh and flavorful Mediterranean offerings! The baba ghanoush was mouth-watering with it's smoky, roasted eggplant and seasonings. The soft pita bread was only .97 cents for an additional slice. My falafel was delicious but underwhelming as it was held in a delicious pita and slathered in hummus but nothing else. The only lettuce or greenery offered was my tasty Greek side salad which came with it. I usually avoid the Greek dessert .... because it's been typically overly sweet and slathered in honey, like a bomb of sugar is a good thing. However, their version was far more gently sweet, flavorful and flaky with crushed pistachio nuts on top. Yummmmmmmy. The service was friendly with its deli-approach, you come to pick up your own food when you are called, and it's cash-only. Bank of Hawaii is only a few yards away! I noted that some dining patrons had wine and possibly beer. The restaurant didn't offer any alcoholic beverages. They did offer some unusual drinks, such as French lemonade, but no wine or beer. I deduced that some of the diners went next door to the wine and beer shop and brought their own. I would have loved a glass of wine with my meal, so maybe that will be my plan next time I come to visit! read more

What a bizarre experience I always seem to have at Olive Tree. I've only ever had take out, which I've only had twice, but no due to not trying! Getting through to place your take-out order during dinner service can be a challenge in itself. They always run out of the special before I ever get through to place my order. Picking up the order sucks too. It's loud and crowded inside and I always end up awkwardly standing in the hustle and bustle to get my food. Despite all this hassle, I still patronize this cafe. The competition for Greek food here on island is abysmal and this is the best option. Their falafels are decent and the sandwiches come with a healthy sized amount of hummus for added moisture. The tabbouleh salad isn't super traditional compared to what I have tasted from middle eastern tabbouleh, but maybe the Greek version is different a bit. Anyways, its still delicious and it has a great texture. Not a cheap dinner. My two falafel pitas and tabbouleh this last order, after tip, was $36. For most cities in the world, falafels are one of the cheapest meals! Oh, Hawai'i. There is a market attached. The restaurant is cash only but the market is not. They have a nice selection of wines and a few meats, cheeses, and alawadi products. read more

Most people don't associate Hawai'i with Greek food unless they've been to Olive Tree, one of my top crave-worthy restaurants and a must eat any time I return to O'ahu to visit family and friends. Unparalleled falafel and hummus (seriously the best), amazing lamb wraps, Yeagantes (butter beans marinated in tomato deliciousness). For me a perfect date (and in fact one of my first with my now husband) is grabbing Olive Tree to eat on the beach at dusk. It's a solid four star review! After watching Mission Impossible we trekked over to Kahala to wait about a half hour for the Cafe to open. There is seating outside with small cafe tables under the traditional blue awning. Promptly at 5:00 the doors opened with ten people already waiting. There is a limited menu with two specials changing each day. No need of the specials we ordered: Avgo Lemono Soup - a bowl of pure heaven, half puréed-half semi solid full bodied with a light lemon flavor. This is my favorite soup from a Greek restaurant in San Jose and I am happy that I've found a place in 808 to enjoy it again. Baba Guanoush with pita bread - yummy, silky, flavorful. Wonderful serving with a divot in each mound filled with olive oil. I will order this whenever it's on the menu and it's a must try here. Mussel ceviche - I would eat a double order of this for a meal another time. Cleaned, ice cold mussels. Not a traditional ceviche but it is topped with an olive oil, lemon, caper sauce that is outstanding. Tabbouleh - heathy serving, great fresh fresh fresh and the dressing was light, flavorful and matched perfectly. Greek Salad - one of the best Greek Salads I have ever tasted. The feta cheese was whisked into the dressing which gave it an interesting consistency. Very good. Fresh fish Souvlaki - today the fresh catch was Opah and it was grilled, served in pita. Split three ways, it was fantastic, fresh, flavorful. New Zealand Lamb Souvlaki - I am a lamb fanatic, this did not disappoint, again split three ways. To top it all off.....Baklava! Officially awesome. Seems like a ton of food however we did not take anything home. The servings are not huge or pricy so you can order plates and share as we did. Lien went next door to Oliver's Liquor, specializing in Greek fare and picked up some pistachio Halva to enjoy with the bottle of Prosecco she brought for dinner. As if it couldn't get better....it's bring your own bottle, BYOB. If you forget or didn't know, Oliver's opens next door at 5:00 too. But truthfully...............my fave before trying Olive Tree, and after......is still Leo's Taverna (even if it isn't as authentic still the best gyro/souvlaki I've had) I ordered a lamb souvlaki and a fish souvlaki along with hummus and pita with an extra pita. Hummus was pretty bland and sad tbh, even store bought hummus have more flavor which was a little sad. Meat was a little salty, very chewy and big chunks I wasn't a fan. My other half had the fish souvlaki which she said was okay. Overall I most likely wouldn't have paid $42 for it. TIP: Go to Leo's Taverna, get the Gyro Value Meal for $10. And get garlic fries and a canned drink. Def the better way to go. P.S. For some reason I couldn't stomach the food 15 minutes later. I started to burp constantly and realized I had to throw up.
