Meant to write this review months ago, but I came here for to celebrate my grad dinner with my family as it was one of my favourite restaurants in Kingston however I am not sure if they were just very busy that night but the service was not great. Half of my family went in to grab our table while my dad and I spent some time searching for parking which probably took roughly 15 minutes. When we got in, there was already water on our table which was nice however after that moment it took 20 minutes for our server to come to our table. I have a lot higher expectations for this place as I have been a couple times and it is a higher end restaurant so I was kinda disappointed. Mind you our reso was at 8pm so we were pretty hungry at this point. The server didn't really say much or apologize for not coming by so it was overall a bit strange. Besides that the food was pretty good, I got the seafood linguine which tasted pretty fresh but I probably wouldn't order it again as there are other things on the menu I like better. My dad ordered the braised lamb shank and my mom and grandma shared the penne pomodoro. Overall the lamb was definitely the best dish out of them all. Not sure if I would come back here, if I was ever visiting Kingston again as there are just so many great restaurants to choose from and I was not satisfied with the service which I think is important especially for a high end place. read more

Overall just OK. For the price, I expected more from them. I felt the dishes weren't executed too well and they definitely weren't authentic Italian. Firstly, I do want to give a nod to their cocktails, that were boozy and had interesting combinations. There was also complimentary bread with olive oil. As for the rest of our meal...we ordered the FRITTO MISTO DI MARE to share and it was just OK, I felt the batter could've been better. Our main dishes took almost an hour to come after our appetizer. My friend got the PESTO LINGUINE (pasta was overdone but the pesto was delicious) while I got the BEEF RAGU GNOCCHI WITH ADDED RAPINI (gnocchi was oddly huge and on the denser side, the addition of rapini was barely a few leaves which was disappointing, sauce was salty). Had a beautiful experience at Olivea. Stopped in kingston on our way back to toronto from a family wedding in Ottawa. Celebrated thanksgiving as well as a bday . The staff was so lovely and the food was 10/10!! There kindness went even further when they called me to tell me they found a gold chain of mine that I hadn't even noticed I lost ! I came here for lunch on a weekend and the service and food was wonderful. I was seated by the window and offered water and was given bread with balsamic and oil until my meal arrived. I ordered a dirty martini (but upset places don't offer or know about blue cheese olives that go wonderfully with dirty martinis) I had the squid for appetizer - absolutely delicious. However, my last bite I had some of the spine/backbone that hadn't been removed/missed from cleaning it - wasn't a big deal. I just mentioned it to my server Nick and moved on - was just happy it was part of the squid anatomy and not a piece of plastic - that would have been horrible. The beef cheek gnocchi was rich and tender with a hint of truffle in the sauce. The dish was most decadent and I ate it slowly so I could savor the flavor. I ordered a small Caesar salad to cut through the richness of the dish. Was divine. I was excited to try the crème brûlée- the caramel topping was way too thick and made the dish overly sweet. I decided to just eat the custard which was creamy and delicious. Overall I still give 4 stars because I had a really great experience but it could have been just a touch better. read more

Found this restaurant on Yelp and decided to try it. It was busy on a Saturday afternoon for lunch but it was not completely full and had open tables during the whole time we were there. We were seated right away for lunch. The food was really good but the service was interesting. Our server was very friendly, provided us with good recommendations and was very efficient but was maybe too efficient. Our main courses were brought out before we were finished our appetizers and we were asked if we wanted dessert while we were still eating our main courses. We felt that we were being rushed out while other tables didn't seem to get the same treatment. read more

What a great choice for date night!! Servers were so friendly and the restaurant is quiet and spacious. We started off with a carpaccio which was amazing!!! Decided on trying Olivea for date night this week. We booked reservations for 2 at 6, and when we got there the place was already packed. We were sat by a window, with a great view of downtown Kingston. Honestly the windows are so cool, the entire side of the restaurant is glass. Beautiful decor, and an awesome feel. We started with bread and olive oil, with a balsamic reduction. The bread was homemade focaccia. After that, the meatballs and arancini which were fantastic. The marinara sauce was unreal. Possibly some of the best I've had outside of Italy. Meatballs were tender and had great flavour. The arancini was crispy, cheesy and the rice inside was perfect. After that, I had the steak with roast potatoes, arugula and a lemon aioli. The steak was perfect, medium rare. And all the components made for a perfect dish. My girlfriend has the flank steak, and that came with rapini and scalloped potato cake. The steak was good, but topped with cream cheese which isn't my thing. (My girlfriend really liked that though). Finally, we had chocolate raspberry tartufo, and that was a perfect end to our meal. Great meal, great restaurant, 100% recommend. read more

Lovely Italian spot in downtown Kingston. They are always busy, and with the live music and menu selection, it's easy to see why. Their staff is always pleasant - our last visit they fit us in within 15 minutes without a reservation. Environment: Inviting, dark, warm. The decor is upscale but unpretentious. It is as comfortable as it is elegant. Drinks: menu is extensive. Not many cocktails, but wines are plentiful here. I had a lovely house red recommended by the bartender. Food: Our table had gnocchi with pesto, gnocchi with beef cheek ragu, and brick chicken with roast vegetables. Beautiful, simplistic plating, relatively small portions. The colors are vibrant - you can tell the pesto is home-made with great ingredients. Gnocchi is cooked perfectly, still with some bite to it. Flavors are all perfectly balanced. Summary: Lovely restaurant with an inviting interior and myriad of menu options for Italian food lovers. Staff are exemplary. I've been here 3 times in the past 3 months and the pasta is delicious every time! Also, the focaccia bread and local balsamic vinegar is to die for! I would definitely come back to Kingston for the pasta and bread. Olivea is great for lunch (less busy and more casual) and dinner (more romantic and ambient lighting). It's great for both small and large groups. The servers are very helpful and kind with recommendations (which I suggest if you have no idea what you want). It is on the pricier side, but well worth it for the quality and quantity (you will definitely not leave hungry!!!). The real show stopper here is the food - everything I've had here is delicious. The pasta is always cooked to al dente. I've had the Garganelli with Crispy Chicken Leg and Roasted Garlic Rosemary Cream Sauce - the chicken was perfectly crisp and tender and the sauce was rich and creamy. I've also tried the Seafood Linguine, which did not disappoint at all! Each bite was packed with so much flavour. What really kept bringing be back to this restaurant is the focaccia bread they give that's complementary (silly, I know). The bread is the most delicious focaccia bread I've ever had! 3.5 stars for general standards, 4 stars for Kingston standards: $18 fried Seafood appetizer - shrimps, scallops and squids. Not too crunchy however and a bit soggy but well flavoured. Came with 2 whole scallops which was good. The lemon makes it a bit too sour and the tartar sauce plays down the overall quality of the dish. Wouldn't recommend tbh. I've been here before and the squid was much better, would recommend that over this. $16 spaghetti + $7 sausage The noodles were quite on point with the al dente. Well flavoured but it's a bit overwhelming. It is a bit salty and very oily. CAUTION! Spicy as well (1/5 true spicy level so depends on whether you can handle spicy at all). House made noodles tastes very traditional and well seasoned. I added sausage for the extra protein and it worked well with the overall pasta experience. $23 garganelli with roasted chicken (RECOMMEND) Well flavoured, the sauce is very garlicky and creamy. It's so simple but it's well flavoured. I would recommend this as well if you come here. Chicken was only average but it works well together with the dish. Great ambience to the restaurant, nicely dimmed lighting, ideal for a date. Definitely the best pasta place in Kingston. Gives a nice cozy feeling and having candles really sets the mood. Comes with bread with vinaigrette and olive oil, however they ran out of bread and did not allow any refills (bit disappointing). I SEE THE BREAD, they clearly just didn't want to give it to us. Overall 3.5/5. Classy decor and ambiance, 4/5 for atmosphere. The restaurant makes for a great date night but can also accommodate a larger group. We were starving walking in and thankfully they started us in some bread, dipped with local balsamic vinegar and olive oil. We had asked for more but the waitress told us they ran out, when CLEARLY there was bread on the serving table. :( and so we started some more before the rest of the food arrived. We started off with the deep fried seafood for $16- 2.5/5. The batter was not very crispy and the taste of it was bland even with the seafood dip. The platter did include a good variety of seafood including scallops, shrimp and calamari in decent amounts. For the main course, I had the Garganelli with crispy chicken leg for $22 - 3.5/5. Overall the dish had an excellent aroma, but was quite heavy. If you're looking for something lighter, I would not recommend this. The pasta was freshly made in house and cooked al dente; the sauce was creamy but not overwhelming. The chicken was grilled to a crispy texture and seasoned minimally which went well with the heavier sauce. Overall, the restaurant's atmosphere definitely trumped its food, which was on the more expensive side. I would still recommend it for a nice evening if you happen to be in town. read more

This restaurant is comfortable selling you bad food for very high prices. You can absolutely mess up with their menu and get something gross. I'm not a very picky person, and this restaurant was the first time in my life I had to say "no" to the QA check. I'd rate it lower but they didn't charge me for the food I didn't like. TL;DR: Understated, delicious Italian food - kinda pricey. Came here for the Sunday pasta special: $24.99 for appetizer, pasta, dessert. ------------ Detailed review: Bread: Amazing olive oil and vinegar wasted on stale focaccia. Quite the tragedy. Last time we came for pasta Sunday, focaccia was beautifully made and fluffy. Appetizer: Arugula Salad, Tomato Soup Arugula salad was fresh, with a peppery bite. Wonderfully refreshing lemon vinaigrette. The tomato soup tasted like pizza sauce - overly sweet, salty, and thicc from soaked bread pieces. Not appetizing at all. Main dish: Spicy spaghetti with shrimp, seafood linguine The seafood linguine was delightful. Pasta was cooked perfectly al dente, and seafood cooked to perfection. The spicy tomato sauce was a great pairing with the sweet seafood. My only complaint was the scallops - clearly frozen, but still pretty tasty! The spicy spaghetti with shrimp was a disappointment. The noodle was soft and over cooked. If you were blindfolded, you wouldn't be able to discern between this spaghetti and soggy instant ramen. Also, it was drenched in oil. Flavours were very garlicky and lacklustre, not to mention not spicy at all. The garlic/arugula/cheese combo did not work, flavour was a tad bitter. However, shrimp was beautifully cooked and very tender. Dessert: Cannoli Thick, crispy shell filled with semisweet cream flavoured with cinnamon and dusted with chocolate. Dined here with my family last night on the patio. Amazing! I dont understand how some people rated this less than a 4?!?!? The foccacia bread starter with the oil/vinegar was wonderful. My wife loved the tomato risotto. My son (who can be picky) loved the penne pomodoro - so simple but so flavorful. I enjoyed the beef cheek gnocchi ragu. Good portion sizes, good service. This is a great restaurant for delicious Italian food without the stuffy old world atmosphere. Don't worry, there are no cold metal tables any more. In fact the seats are very comfortable. They have specials most days of the week including live Jazz Tuesday. We (2 people) went on Sunday and one person had a pasta special which includes an appetizer and dessert for $20. In general the prices are reasonable. Make sure to ask for bread if your server doesn't automatically bring it. I would prefer to see more imported wines by the glass from around the world. They seem to be big on Ontario wines, which can be rather limiting if you're into sweeter reds. read more

Olivea is one of the nicer restaurants in Kingston. When I was a student, I came here for a nice dinner very rarely - because it's quite pricey in the city. The ambiance is quite nice, it feels homely and is very laid back. The servers are easy going and quite helpful. I think that this is a nice place for a date. It is a little crammed depending on where you are sitting and it would be best to get a reservation. It is definitely one of the nicer Italian restaurants in Kingston and is also one of the priciest in the city. I recently went back to Kingston for a firm event and had a dinner here. It was great - we ordered a bottle of Chianti Reserva, this bottle was quite marked up at $80, but it was quite smooth. Additionally, we ordered a few starters, the fried risotto balls, the bruschetta, truffled fries, and beef carpaccio. I addition, I got the daily special which included home-made sausage for my entree. Personally, I am a huge fan of the truffled fries and beef carpaccio. Despite the colour of the beef carpaccio being a deeper red than what I am used too (not exactly sure why this would be the case), but it was still very good tasting and did not result in any food poisoning. And who could ever go wrong with fries with cheese on the top. If you were ordering two appetizers, I would recommend those. read more

She was so great, personal and made sure everyone in the group felt like they are a part of a 5 star experience. To celebrate our anniversary, we decided to take the recommendation of many of our friends to come to Olivea - it's been a couple years since I've last been here, and I was really excited that this place continues to have great service as well as delicious food. We opted for the 99$ dinner special for two - two apps, two mains, and two desserts with a bottle of wine (from a shortlist of their overall selection). The menu options are scaled down from the entire menu, but we were very happy to choose from the selection. Our server was very pleasant as well as efficient. I was really pleased with the arugula salad - it's a heaping pile of dressed arugula with shaved parmesan, and it is both simple and delicious. I had the steak with fries for my main, and although we both thought the chef was heavy handed with the garlic, I'm also okay with that. Just know you'll smell for a while :) The desserts are simple - he had creme brûlée and I had tartufo. Both were excellent. It's a busy spot on a weekend, but check out their online reservation system. So simple! read more

As another reviewer wrote, the food is definitely 5 stars, whereas the atmosphere isn't to everyone's taste. If you don't mind the industrial look with metal tables & chairs and an open view of the ceiling air ducts, then this place is excellent. Even despite the style, you get a great view of the downtown square and during the evening the place is lit up with candles and is quite romantic. The food was amazing. I had the gnocchi, while the rest of my family had the special (which I believe was a sort of roast beef along with a tasty light salad). The gnocchi I had was handmade and literally melted in my mouth, and my family couldn't get over how tasty their meal was. The service was attentive and friendly, and when asked for advice on wine, the waitress really knew what she was talking about! In fact my only complaint was the dessert I ordered. I ordered the cannoli which ended up being so hard, we had to cover the plate for fear that upon cutting off a piece it would fling over to the next table. The filling also ended up being rather bland and disappointing. That being said, the other desserts, coffees, appetizers, and meals were amazing. read more

My boyfriend and I went to Gananoque for a weekend trip and ended up driving to Kingston twice (!) because of this restaurant. The first time we just went in to eat, and accidentally stumbled upon this place. We went to eat with family and ordered: the mezzo e mezzo platter (appetizer, meats, cheeses, olives etc), a few taster oysters (delicious), and the seafood linguine and 4 steak frites. All the temperatures on our steaks were DIFFERENT and yet they came out at the same time, perfectly cooked, and oh my god so delicious. I go out to eat quite a bit and this is literally one of the best pieces of meat I have ever put in my stomach. Amazing. The seafood linguine was so chock-full of seafood (mussels, shrimp, clams, squid, etc) that you could barely afford to get to the pasta, which was also quite delicious. Finally, I ordered the chocolate mousse. The waiter told me it was like a chocolate orgasm, and well.. it was like a chocolate heart attack for sure. I thought it was going to be a lot more fluffy but the solidity of the chocolate and the consistency was so smooth and amazing that I wasn't even miffed at the difference in my expectations. The service was great both times, and going there on a Tuesday surprised us with Live Jazz. Overall one of the best restaurants I have ever been to. Ever. read more

Visited recently on a busy Friday night. We were a table of eight, and two members of our party were unexpectedly held up. Our server sighed, rolled her eyes, and was inattentive all evening. We only realized the reason for her attitude later into the meal. If our server had simply communicated with us, like an adult, we could easily have resolved the issue. Instead, struggled through what was actually a delicious meal because we were astonished at the way we were being treated. Personally, I won't return to Olivea and I hope the rest of my party doesn't either. There are too many other great restaurants in Kingston to visit that will treat us well. read more

Actually, I would give this five stars for food, but I found the atmosphere a bit jarring and industrial -- not the kind of cosy place I want to eat really, really good Italian food. Located on a picturesque corner in Kingston by the old City Hall with lots of big windows for good views. Our appetizers were the squid and the carpaccio. The squid was very good -- tender and garlicky. However, don't expect some disguised onion ringy-squid. This is the real deal - no breading or funky sauce. Carpaccio was amazing. A very generous serving of pounded down beef tenderloin, with baby greens, preserved onions and big shavings of parmesan. Husband's main was chicken that had been spatchcocked and grilled under a weight (Isn't spatchcock a great word? Go look it up). A bit more citrusy than I cared for but he really liked it. it came with a wonderful horseradish potato cake. (thin sliced layers of potato baked until golden with yummy stuff between the layers - an upscale scalloped potato). My main was sublime -- grilled sweetbreads on parmesan polenta, surrounded by veal cheek ragu. The sweetbreads were creamy on the inside with kind of a crunchy coating on the outside. The parmesan polenta was soft and lovely -- you could bathe in this stuff -- and the veal cheek ragu was basically a very nice pot-roasty kind of stew/sauce - that played off the polenta and the sweetbreads very well. Very yummy. Perfect comfort food, especially with a glass of ripasso valpolicella. One of the best meals of the year. read more

Great great great location. Nice spot to grab a late lunch in the summer and people watch from the patio as there tends to be a lot of foot traffic around summertime with the market. The head chef is a super nice guy. Blanking on his name, but was introduced once when he was buying produce from the farm I used to work at. That said, they usually buy local produce during the summer and make a point to feature the farms and what not. Good on you! The menu isn't anything amazing, but pretty good light lunch fare and some heavier dinner options. Some interesting pasta dishes that have a northern Italian feel to them. Veggers beware though, dinner time is a little bit low on the options for you. My biggest beef with Olivea is by far the service. While I know someone who serves there and she's probably the nicest person I've ever met. However, there's one jerk that works here who was far and away the rudest person I've ever encountered in the service industry. Not only that, but apparently he's a dick all the time and has yet to be canned. I'll save you the play by play, but rest assured I'm not supporting a place that lets him stay and work after customer complaints. read more

We went to Olivea as a group of 8 to carb load before our triathlon the next day. We were immediately served water and had water jugs on the table and bread was brought shortly before the appetizers with fig balsamic and olive oil. They were pretty great with the gluten free as any pasta dish could be made with gluten free noodles, and most entrees could be modified to be made gfree. Small selection of apps that I could have though, so I just ordered the salad with my pasta. I had the insalata (sp?) which was just mixed greens with a lemon dressing. Nothing special but nice. For the entree I had the special of the day which was Arctic char with peas and leeks in a white wine butter sauce. I couldn't have the tagliatelle pasta but the spaghetti noodles (corn-based) were great! Perfectly cooked too! The pasta dish was good and filling - I really enjoyed it. I felt that the prices were pretty spot on for the type of restaurant Olivea is, but some of the portions are small (most notably, the gnocchi). Great atmosphere, clean and the servers are very pleasant and accommodating. It was a great dining experience in Kingston! Parking is a pain so be prepared to parallel park or find a parking spot in a lot nearby. Also lots of one way streets to navigate. read more

This is one of my favourite restaurants because I have yet to have a bad or even mediocre experience here. I have thoroughly enjoyed every visit and the people I bring always leave happy as well. They are pretty authentic when it comes to their dishes, if you're thinking you will be getting a heavy cream sauce here you will not be. Their Arancini is to die for, everywhere I go in the GTA that has them, I hope and pray they are as good as Olivea's but nope they never are *sigh*. The fresh pasta and appropriate portion sizes (aka not American sizes) is wonderful. The truffled frites are truly amazing. If you are in K Town and want a nice place to go for dinner I highly suggest it. You have a nice view of city hall and Confederation park is right beside it. They are a little more pricey than your average restaurant but you get what you pay for right! read more

Been here a few times, but never "wow-ed" by the food. Same goes for the service. Last time we came was in the summer for dinner for a party of 4. We didn't have a reservation and we wanted to sit outside, so we waited at the bar for an outside table to be ready (took about 30 mins, but we didn't mind at all). Great mojitos at the bar! Anyways, we got seated outside and then for 45 minutes no waiter came over. We finally flagged someone down but they said they weren't our waiter, but would find ours and send them out. Then a guy rushed over, opened up his notepad and said "heard you guys were ready to order?". It was a bit rude...he seemed irritated to have to take our order, and no smile or "hello my name is" or "hello I'll be taking care of you this evening". At an expensive fancy Italian restaurant, you expect great service! Seems no one wanted to serve us. Not a good feeling, especially when you spend over $150 on dinner. I had the tortellini, and it was OK. All the dishes are plated so beautifully, they look like they're going to taste incredible, but it's always so-so.
