I happened to be in the little strip mall, and was surprised to find them actually open. I went in and ordered catfish. I really wish I had checked the bag before leaving, I would have demanded my money back. When I opened it at home, I found razor thin, rock hard pieces of something, (can't rightfully call it fish), coated in cornmeal and fried until it was inedible. I called to make sure they were open before I headed there. I hadn't been to Oliver's in a minute. I remember when they use to be at their old location before they moved to this shopping center. I believe they have been around for more than a decade. The nice lady handed me my food and told me to be careful it's hot. There is nothing better than fresh out the grease chicken, fish and etc. I told her to fry my fish kinda hard and she knew exactly what I meant. I aint really been feeling catfish lately because no one has been able to make the edges crispy but keep it meaty and soft in the middle. But she did it just right. I went there the other day and the lady was on the phone and asked me did I have a call-in. I said no so she walked off back to the kitchen and continued her lil phone call. I was like: OKAY. When she came back to the counter (still on the phone) she just looked at me and said: are you gonna order? In a kinda rude manner. Located at the end of a strip mall, plenty of parking but spaces can be a little tight. Called before coming in because i saw reviews about their hours. The lady that picked up was very kind and offered to take my order over the phone (I opted to just drive over and order in person). They do take card. They also have 3-4 booths to sit at if you decide to dine in. As soon as we walked in we were greeted. The oxtails were so good. Flavor and super tender, literally fell off the bone when i picked it up. Pieces were huge but came with a lot of fat on it. Mac n cheese was bomb. Cheesy, not super salty and not over the top. Perfect and would for sure get again. Greens were cooked perfectly, not super soggy, seasoned well, small bits of pork. I think i was missing the gravy but overall would get again. Fried catfish was good, batter wasn't hard/stiff. Shrimp was tasty. I didn't care for the oysters. Potato salad was really eggy and was probably the best side we got. French fries were just ok. Also got the peach cobbler but was way too sweet for my liking. When we got it i had to question if it was peach cobbler or yams because it was so sweet and didn't have a ton of peaches. Overall, i will be eating here again. i love a mom n pops/hole in the wall and i look forward to supporting small businesses. Though the food took a while to come out, the worker was welcoming and the food came out fresh and piping hot. Great portion for the prices. This food is horrible with no flavor. If I could give them Negative stars I would. I ordered catfish, prawns, and oysters. My sides were potato salad and macaroni and cheese. The prawns were battered in a tempura with no seasoning (what Black folks cook prawns in tempura batter) the catfish was just salty but no other seasoning. The macaroni and cheese had no cheese just some watery juice that was salty but absolutely no cheese. WTH and on to the potato salad it was the worse. This place is not closed, but the location has changed. I stop by and the location which is in a strip-mall near 1872 A St, Antioch, CA 94509 near Mike's bakery, which is one of the best bakeries in the area. Now, as for Oliver's Fish-house, The fry fish is the best thing going. The fish is perfectly fried Louisiana style fish. Mainly northern Louisiana. The reason I say this is because the fish lacks the spiciness of true New Orleans style fish (just look for the fresh ground pepper on any piece of fish you order). Still the texture and taste is, other than home cookin' is some of the best I have had in the state and if you add tabasco sauce to it you're hitting a "homer." As for other items on their menu, the chicken it's OK, not really seasoned(I think it's a California diet thing you know, little salt and pepper. (I find Older Californians think Taco Bell is spicy). The hush puppies on the other hand to die for the perfect size, perfect taste, and perfectly seasoned. Everything else is pretty much to standard. As for service, call ahead. I cannot emphasize enough for customers to call ahead. Because they prepare the fish is with the care. Good food takes time to prepare. Also the customer service can be described as manic at best. It ranges from good old southern charm too "did that really happened" (it can get a little rushed during lent). (looks like it sold burgers at one time). They forgot to include the two sides that came with the two meals. 5 miles down the road and you find out you got $#@$! in the Drive thru! (actually no drive thru here) Had to turn around and go back to get the sides since I really wanted to try everything we ordered. -Hush puppies had a good spice kick, not too big but they were fried well and tasted good. -Coleslaw is a fruity slaw with raisins and a creamy dressing that's a bit runny but not too bad just a bit too juicy. -Potato salad was kind of an egg potato salad with celery and a hint of pickle taste, perfect consistency, not bad. -4 piece fried fish $7.99 (opted for 2 pc catfish, 2 pc red snapper). Fish tasted fresh but was over salted. There was too much corn meal in the breading which made it more filling and after one piece of fish between the breading the saltiness I couldn't eat anymore. -8 piece fried oysters for $12.00. The fried oysters were breaded in heavy cornmeal. They weren't as salty as the fish but again the breading was a bit much and they were a bit overcooked. They include tartar sauce, malt vinegar and ketchup prepackaged in individual packets with the meal. As a suggestion, for a marginal cost a homemade tartar sauce would go a long way in improving the taste and authenticity of a legit seafood fry. -7up cake is pretty dense like a shortcake, moist and pretty good for $2.50. Potato salad and coleslaw are the only two sides that come with the meals unless you want to pay extra, for example: French fries or sweet potato fries add $2.00 Potato salad single $1.50 pint $2.50 Macaroni Salad single $2.00 pint $3.50 Cole Slaw single $1.50 pint $2.50 I realize it's a new place and it was my first visit but I wasn't happy with the speediness of service that didn't even include all the items in the order. Let me preface my review by stating when I called they were very nice & since I wasnt sure about the sides they gave me a small sample, so that I could decide. 1- I phoned my order in and was told it would be ready in 15min. I was warned they were a bit slow & arrived an hour later only to wait another 30min. 2- I ordered catfish fillet & oysters. I got about 10min down the road a decided to taste the fish because it smelled delicious. To my surprise, it wasn't catfish. They gave me Swai Basa a Chinese version. I phoned & told them that I'm returning my purchase for a refund, which they obliged. When I told her that what she sold me was not what I ordered, she stated that I wasn't going to tell her anything because she's been in business 14yrs. 3- The price charged is not the same as the advertised price. 4- This establishment is truly a small black owned business and to be perfectly honest her business is only thriving because she's the only place for fried fish. 5- Her sides are mediocre at best and it apoears that they're not cooked daily & are microwaved when ordered. 6- The bright is the more than adequate parking because they're located in a desolate strip mall that time & the owners have forgotten. They is no shortage of undesirables, so park as close to the door as possible. I recommend not going near dusk. 7- It must be a usual practice to mix up orders because someone came in because they didn't get all that they paid for. read more

I'm picky about my catfish but this place is good. The fish is fried perfectly not too soft not too hard. The fries are a generous portion and seasoned with seasoning salt.
