We thought it might be the thermostat so we bought a Nest thermostat and thought the service man would install it. When he came he checked furnace and thermostat and agreed it was the thermostat that needed replacing. I mentioned we had purchased a Nest and asked if he could install it. He didn't seem to think the Nest was compatible. He said he had thermostats in his truck and brought one in, it was a simple Honeywell thermostat. I asked how much it was going to cost, he said $600.00 for thermostat and install. We said no, too expensive. He charged $173.00 for approx 20-30 minutes of his time. I wrote a check. I called another company and had another serviceman come to give me a quote. He took a quick look at the furnace and thermostat and said "there is nothing wrong with your thermostat, it has not been set up correctly." He made a slight adjustment and lo and behold the thermostat is working perfectly! Nice to know there are still some honest people making an honest living. I will call this company any time and trust what they tell me. One thing I didn't mention earlier was that the furnace and thermostat was working last winter. However this past summer I did have another serviceman from Unique come to check if it would be possible to have a humidifier connected to the furnace. I can't say for sure that he touched the thermostat. He may have changed the setup and left without changing it back? Can't say for sure, but mighty suspicious Since we never mess with the setup. Either way, the serviceman from Unique was either totally incompetent or dishonest and just trying to sell me a thermostat for $600.00. I called the company several times, but they never respond. I will never use them again or refer anyone to them. SM

The tech they sent out took the time to show us what exactly was wrong (a blown motor capacitor) and the different failure modes to watch for. He left us knowing more than we did before and feeling confident that they value repeat customers (which, of course, we'll be).

I wasn't looking for a large HVAC company as I know those places tend to charge more and I also wanted to give a small business in the area the opportunity. I called in the middle of the afternoon and explained my situation, and within 1 hour Ken was at my house. His daughter was the call taker and she was very polite and professional and passed along to Ken that she felt my situation was urgent, which I appreciated. Ken assessed my situation and determined my furnace (20+ years old and on borrowed time) needed to be replaced and was dangerous to continue to use. He was nothing but nice and professional the entire time but stressed the issue of replacing sooner than later. He recommended I not use the furnace. After being at my home for approximately 1 hour, he was very kind and didn't charge me for the service call but instead deemed the visit a "quote". Now that is something you would never get from a "Big Box" company. The next day he emailed me a quote for a new HVAC system as my A/C was on borrowed time as well. He said he could even do the install with in 5 days (WOW). His quote was very fair and reasonable, however I didn't use his company but this was no fault of his. I would HIGHLY recommend him as others have as well.
