Do not take your car to Olympia Autohaus, I have never felt so ripped off by an auto shop in my life, and I am 68. They where misleading and took advantage of poor communication about their obligatory 2 hour inspection policy which I found out when I picked up my van cost me $450 including tax. I simply asked them to time and adjust the idle on my 1984 Vanagon. This was a simple ask and I never got the issue resolved or diagnosed by them. When I set up the appointment, to get me in, they said they would do a safety inspection and I heard them say it would be $210 (but that was the hourly for a 2 hour inspection). When I got the call from them the next day they read off a list of 35 things my car needed, 95% of which I am already aware of (I have done the restoration). They did nothing but an inspection, and then call me to try and bleed me for more work and cash. They did not even look at the timing. The excuse was my "vacuum hoses are not right and the new distributor is wrong for the van." I will be looking into both of those last two to confirm, but I have my doubts. The whole point of their "safety" inspection is to make a $2,000 job out of a $250 job. My point here is they focused on an inspection I did not need and ignored fixing and diagnosing the problem. "I think your vacuum lines and distributor are wrong" is not a diagnosis; this was not part of the "inspection". I guess I was naive to think they would actually do what needed done, like any honest shop would do. I'm sure my $450 could have gone a long way into fixing my actual problem. I walked away livid not wanting to be screwed and further without even a diagnosis of what my timing problem is. I asked for specific work and they did a costly safety inspection that I did not need. Maybe they actually do good work, I will never know. I will pass this bad review on to family, friends and other local car enthusiasts. read more

I needed the oil drain plug fixed. They charged me $410 for a 2 hour inspection of the vehicle. Like i needed someone to tell me my windshield wipers, horn, and headlights worked?? Oh, don't forget the tire pressure. I had initially agreed to have them do a tune up and replace a steering bushing and the valve cover gaskets. After reading reviews I called and told them to only do the plug repair and oil change. When I picked up my vehicle, they charged me $84.69 (25% restocking fee.) For returning parts they supposedly ordered. (Steering coupler, cap and rotor, two valve gaskets, air filter, and spark plugs) There is no way these parts added up to $338.76. The parts, all OEM. come to $96. I took my paperwork from Autohaus to Pete Lea to check out. He is arguably the premier auto mechanic in Olympia, WA. Pete confirmed my suspicions. He said I should get the Heli sinc metric thread kit from Autohaus they charged me for it, and should not have been charged a restocking fee for basic items a shop usual keeps on hand. I requested they give me the hele sinc metric thread kit and they refused. My other mechanic also said the same thing about the part. Nate offered to give me the $84 back. I told him if he gave me a $1000 back i would only leave a couple reviews. Nate refused. what sort of loser would I be to take money from someone and then not leave an honest review. read more

I normally take my car to the dealer for service a repair. lately i felt that the dealer is taking advantage of unsuspecting clients by performing unnecessary repairs, choosing the more expensive repair to solve the problem and maximize their profit margin. after paying thousands on previous repair I decided to get another opinion this time. The dealer quote was almost 5K to replace the transfer unit. I went to Autohaus and all that was needed is a transfer unit flush that did solved the problem at a cost of few hundreds rather than few thousands. will never go to the dealer again. This is a dishonest and untrustworthy business. My VW Golf wagon was losing power and an engine alert came on as I approached Olympia on my twice weekly commute to Olympia from Seattle for work - this was the Wednesday befor this past Labor Day weekend. I was able to sputter to my workplace in Olympia and googled local mechanics, as I would not be able to drive the car back to Seattle after work. I called Olympia Autohaus and spoke with Beau who assured me that "you have called the right place" after I explained my predicament, that I was essentially stuck in Olympia. He stated that I could have the car towed to their shop and that they would be able to look at it the next day - Thursday. He absolutely never mentioned that their shop would be closed the Friday before the holiday weekend - if he had, I would have called other mechanics as I had hoped to resolve the issue that day or at least that week. I had the car towed to their shop right way. I took a series of public buses back home to Seattle after the workday. The next morning (Thursday), I emailed the shop first thing, and then waited until about noon to call, to give them time to assess the car. I was able to briefly speak to a technician named Alex who seemed hesitant to tell me anything; he just said that "Beau should be back in an hour and will call you back..." I waited over 2 hours and never got any call. I called back around 2pm and left a voicemal, then called back again about an hour later - technician Alex picked up the phone and said that "Beau never came back to the shop... having some personal issues..." and that somebody would get back to me with some info about the car and the plan. And oh... that they are closed on Friday because of the Labor Day weekend (and closed Monday - the actual Labor Day holiday, which I expected). Therefore, I would likely not be able to speak with anybody about the status of the car and plan for repair until Tuesday morning. I expressed my displeasure, and was then told that "I will talk with Beau at home and he will give you a call late this afternoon..." Well... I never received any call and had no choice but to just wait until the following Tuesday morning to call. On the Tuesday morning after Labor Day I called the shop first thing in the morning and Beau answered the phone - he was rude and defensive, stating that he absolutely told me that they were going to be closed the Friday before Labor Day and that he would have to get back to me later in the morning about the service recommendations. I called back about an hour later - turns out that their assessment was that there were injector circuit malfunctions of 2 cylinders - not recreated after swapping 2 coils and inspecting the spark plugs - car seemed to be running fine after that and engine light did not come on again. They said that they recommended replacing all 4 injectors and intake cleaning - $4000!! I had an awful feeling in my gut - the feeling of being taken advantage of... I thought about it for a few minutes, and then proceeded to arrange for my car to get towed from their shop to my VW mechanic in West Seattle - I did feel safe to go down and get the car and drive it back to Seattle without having it looked at by a mechanic up here. My VW mechanic in West Seatle could not find anything wrong with the car - let it idle for 4 hours and drove it all over West Seattle. He concurred that their may have been cylinder misfires, but did not recommend replacing the injectors - said that this was not a reasonable recommendation. My sense was that Beau (who is the service writer for Olympia Autohaus and therefore is the primary interface with the customer) was trying to screw me for asserting that he never told me that they would be closed the Friday before the already long weekend, having some basic expectation about simple communication about the car within a day or so of dropping it off and that they had me over a barrel because my car was "stuck" in Olympia. In retrospect, I am so glad to have removed the car from their shop as you can't do business with somebody who you fundamentally do not trust. I have been driving the car since and all is ok so far. I would absolutely stay away from this business. Also, that Tuesday I had asked to speak with the owner of the shop to give some feedback (Nate, per their website) and was told multiple times that I would get a call back - never happened. I took my 2013 BMW 335i in for a diagnosis (7/8/25) and was extremely disappointed with the service. The shop charged an unreasonably high fee just to identify the issue--far beyond standard industry rates. There was no prior clear communication about the cost, and I left feeling taken advantage of. While the staff was courteous, the pricing practices were excessive and lacked transparency. I have never felt so badly ripped off. I had one check engine light error. They said they needed 3 hours to diagnose it and found there was a vacuum leak. They charged me $603 out the door for a DIAGNOSIS! I called the dealership prior to this visit and they said they would perform a complete vehicle inspection (including diagnosing the check engine light) for $350. I made the mistake of not reading their Yelp reviews prior to my visit where I would have identified other people getting ripped off on diagnosis fees. I cannot recommend this shop based on my experience and will ensure my friends and family are aware of this unfortunate experience. Update on 7/19: One of the things Autohaus put in their list of items to fix is they said there was a leak at the oil cooler and recommended replacing the gasket. That was off because I have never seen an oil leak from the area of the engine where the oil cooler is located. I took the car into another shop for a second opinion. They said the oil cooler is "bone dry and doesn't have any signs of leaking". Conclusion: Autohaus recommended a service that was NOT NECESSARY! Are these people trying to scam customers to make more money. I am going to look into recourse on getting my money back. This is ridiculous. read more

If you're expecting the kind of service where a white coated mechanic meets you at the door with a clipboard at 8:58am for your 9:00am appointment, and then says , "Your car will be ready today at 4:30", but it's actually ready to go at 3:15, with a mint chocolate on the dashboard, well...this isn't the place. That's not bad, though. It's a much more laid back experience here. Organic, even. It's clear Nate and the other folks truly LOVE cars. The shop smells like bearing grease and exhaust, and it's glorious. If you do own an air cooled VW, this is the place to take your ride. It's really comforting to know these peeps adore your old T2 or Bug or Ghia just as much as you do. They service other foreign makes too, apparently, but my experience has been with them working on my old VeeDubs. Prices are really fair, given how much parts cost. The work is solid. Everyone is nice. You can't set your watch to them, but you can trust them with your car. Yeah, you might wait a few weeks to get in, but it's worth it. read more

Well, like a lot of "relationships" that start out well, this one went south - big time. I'm going to trash them here, something I save for rare occasions of incompetence or dishonesty - or both. Your results may vary. After making an appointment, they had my car several weeks, along with a list of requested inspections/repairs. I was headed out of town. When I returned, the inspections were compete but nearly nothing (one item) was fixed. Moreover, that item had been farmed out to a specialty shop. Strike One. After another stretch of away, I attempted to get in again to finish up the list; my call was not returned. Maybe the next bit of this story is something they didn't want to deal with? I'll never know. But I do know this: Strike Two. When I picked up my car after the first visit, the factory radio was removed and placed on the floor-mat; I was told it was "fried", had a short, and was causing other problems with the fault code reader. There is was, pronounced dead, along with the gaping hole in the dash to be addressed later. Recently, upon inspection, we find the radio merely had its own integrated (though visible, removable, replaceable) 5 amp common blade-fuse blown. Electronics 101 says - check the fuse! No no no, it had been declared dead. Unfortunately I detected the blown fuse after the aftermarket unit was purchased and installed at a Car Audio Specialty Shop. I took Autohaus' word for it, the Audio Shop had no reason to doubt my report, so it's not on them. I said I needed a new stereo, they got me one. Rookie mistake. It gets even better, because I'm pretty sure Autohaus damaged the adjacent component to the radio-head when removing it. I called to get an explanation the next day. (then daylight and able to see condition of car interior) The tech, I was informed, did "not remember it happening". Ok, well, it seems to me I should have gotten a, "Hey, did you know your thingy was broken there?" at the time - if it didn't happen at the time. I can't prove they broke it, no doubt, but if it wasn't noticed and reported to me, I don't want them working on my car. It was easy to see, easy to report, and easy to forgive if addressed. But it wasn't. (my initial list was thorough, and this damage wasn't on it.) Strike Three. Next batter, maybe you'll have better luck. read more

My '89 VW Vanagon needed a transmission put in so I called Olympia Autohaus.They scheduled me 2 weeks out for June 16. It's a 4 hour job according to the book, so I expected it to be in a day or 2. I asked a number of times for a quote but they kept telling me they would call me with one. Three days after I took it in they got it on the lift and only then did they give me a quote. - 4 hours to take the old transaxle out and another 4 hours to put the new one I had ordered from German Transaxle in. Not knowing, I said okay. Then I found out from my regular mechanic that it's 4 hours to both take out the old transaxle and put the new one in. I called 2 other VW shops in the area and they also said it's 4 hours to take out the old one and put the new one in. I told Olympia Autohaus that and they said they always quote high because issues come up. Four days later, they finally had the old one out (my van had been there a week by then). It took another 4 days to get the new one in. Then they said it wasn't running well. It had been running fine. They put a new cap and rotor on. Then they said it was running on only 3 cylinders so they put new spark plugs in. Then they said they were 90% sure it was my air flow meter - they took mine out and put one of theirs in and said it ran better. I told them I had put a rebuilt one from Van Cafe in just a year ago. By now my van had been in there 2 weeks for a 4 hour job. Then they changed the timing. They said it had bad gas and put some gas in and said it was running like a champ. I went to get it - 2 weeks and 3 days after it had gone in. I had a long talk with them about being overcharged and how long they kept it - I told them I had no confidence in them and I was taking it to Pete Lea Automotive Medical Center to have Pete check their work. The result: the cap and rotor did not need to be changed, the original spark plugs could have a run a long time yet, my air flow meter was just fine and they had set the timing wrong. Pete quickly found that the problem was my ECM - he replaced it and my van runs great again. Customer beware! I had to pay double for the transaxle replacement, then pay again to have another mechanic fix what they did wrong. And my van was in their shop for 2 weeks and 3 days for a 4 hour job. I live in Lakewood, but work in Olympia. I usually take my car to a German auto shop in Tacoma, but decided to try out Olympia Autohaus since it was closer to my work. I dropped it off before I went in to work in order to get it checked out, and they were done by the time I got off. Unlike the usual shop I take it to, these guys did a FULL top-to-bottom inspection of my car, in additional to the usual maintenance stuff, and did it surprisingly fast. To my surprise, they found a laundry list of issues with my car, only a couple of which I was already aware of. They were shocked to learn that my usual shop hadn't alerted me to all of the problems that my car had being that I had just had it repaired there less than a month prior. I was also quite shocked. While German Autohaus is a bit pricier than what I'm used to, the thoroughness and professional work these guys do is unmatched by any other shop I've taken my vehicle to. Regardless, from now on, I won't be taking my vehicle anywhere else but here. After all, I'd rather pay more to have the job done right the first time rather than paying less and having my vehicle wind up back in the shop every month. read more

These guys did great work. Had a 99 2.5 RS that was stumbling and bogging out. Replaced maf, tps and coil pack. Still couldn't get it to run. We dropped the car off on a Friday and asked them to keep it until it ran right. They checked in with us each step of the way with an updated bill. Got all repairs approved before replacing anything. They ended up finding out that the parts we had bought were bad or out of calibration. They recalibrated and replaced the others. Got the car back Tuesday running perfect! What a life saver. On a trip to our son's wedding our Vanagon failed to start when we stopped off at the Co-Op. Being from Seattle, we had no idea who to turn to. It was just before the Labor Day weekend. Our mechanic up in Renton (NorthWesty) recommended that we contact Olympia Autohaus. That was the best decision we ever made. Our problem was a condition that only manifested after the engine was run for quite a while. Travis fit us in and Nate and Jordan proceeded to do their magic. They devoted the rest of that day and the first half of the next to identify the issue, develop a proposed fix and implement it. We were on our way by that afternoon. We were so grateful that they didn't just replace parts and tell us it was fixed when it wasn't! They really worked hard to troubleshoot and do repairs that actually took care of the real issue. Not only was their repair work great, but they were friendly, understanding and reassuring, helping us (while stranded) to feel like we were in good hands.
