Best sushi I've ever tasted. My husband and I love to sit at sushi bars, so this was a real treat, like dinner and a show. If the online reservations are sold out, add yourself to the waitlist and keep trying, because we were able to get in that way! Plexiglass dividers and sanitizing practices made me feel safe eating here in times of COVID. There are only six seats in the restaurant, so it's a very intimate dining experience. This is less of a reflection on the restaurant, but worth noting, because it negatively affected our experience. Only one other couple was there during our 9 p.m. seating, but the gentleman was painfully obnoxious. He was obviously trying to impress his date with his knowledge of Michelin restaurants and fish, but he was very loud and would not stop talking. While the host/server was incredibly polite and attentive, making sure to engage us, the other couple received the lion's share of the chef's attention, and we felt mostly ignored by him. Aside from the other patrons, the food was excellent, but I would also expect that given the high price. We did not get any adult bevs, but we did add the wagyu chef special once we finished the tasting menu. The wagyu was good but maybe not worth the price. We do love salmon, and the only piece on the menu was smoked, so we were a little sad about that. I am not a huge fan of eel, but every other fish we were served was phenomenal, and my favorite was the medium-fatty tuna. The black cod was wonderful. Took my husband to Juno for their omakase menu last year for his birthday and he loved it, so I thought I'd have an easy win this year and check out another omakase spot. Luckily, there are lots of omakase restaurants popping up in Chicago, but I ultimately chose Yume because it recently received a Michelin Star and wow. This place has exponentially raised the bar for us. As other reviewers have shared, Omakase Yume is small and only seats 8 people. There are 2 seating hours each night - 5:30pm and 7:30pm - and I barely booked the 5:30pm reservation two weeks out. I guess I buy into the exclusivity club, because the limited timeslots made me even more eager for our dinner. Fast forward to the day of, and we are speed-walking down Washington because it's best to arrive on time; otherwise, risk the stare downs of others already seated. The restaurant is easy to miss, but once we were seated (we had personalized name cards), we felt immediately at ease by the minimalist decor and tranquility of the space. I think it really depends on the group you end up dining with, but our group was mostly quiet, which made it a true food-centric experience. Chef Sangtae Park is brilliant, he worked swiftly and expertly, crafting each piece with ease. There are some reviewers that prefer their nigiri "pure" - just rice, a bit of wasabi, and raw fish, and if that is what you like, this may not be the place for you. I appreciate that the chef plays with smoked seaweed, ponzu, or other techniques like grilling/smoking. I loved every second of our meal - it's mesmerizing to have a chef prepare his delicacies right in front of you and eating with your hands. My favorites were the Tamago Dofu, Chutoro, Otoro, and Sake. Uni was a necessary add-on for us, and a perfect way to end the savory portion of the meal. I was very excited for this and made my reservation months in advance (ok fine, just two months). The $125 per person not-including-tax-and-tip price tag is one of the lower ones I've seen for omakase, which was nice, and I was riding on the Michelin Star hype. Yes, yes, very basic of me, I know. What disappointed me: - I was most disappointed with the fish being pre-cut. I'm no sushi chef but it seems fresher when the chef cuts it right before preparing it and giving it to you. - In total there were only 15 courses and out of the 15, only 11 were sushi courses. I realize this is kind of what their website said, but naive me was hoping for more sushi. - The chawanmushi appetizer and miso soup course were only ok. - I would have preferred tax and tip being included in the price tag (this is for all restaurants in general - charge me more, that's fine, just don't make me calculate the tip!) - the extra sushi you can order (at an additional cost) should have come before the eel dessert sushi - the extra horse mackerel sushi ($10) I ordered was not extremely fresh tasting What I liked: Overall the sushi itself was quite good and I liked the unique flavor combinations. The shrimp sushi was creamy with a slight crunch. The grilled miso cod dish melted in my mouth. The matcha panna cotta was pure milky heaven! Could have eaten 5 of those little cups. By far the BEST omakaze I have ever had! Omakaze Yume is one of the very few restaurants that offers omakaze as the base for your meal with an option to add sides of specials. They serve maximum of 8 people at a time so the experience is very intimate and personal. I loved everything that was put on my plate but I especially loved the fluke with kimchi topping (mainly due to the texture of the fish that only the freshness and the top quality can provide), sweet shrimp topped with shrimp powder (so fresh and so sweet - it just melted perfectly in my mouth), smoked salmon (smoked right in front of you - both the experience and the taste are out of this world), golden eye snapper (so special in its simple way) cooked black cod (the skin is perfectly seasoned and crispy, I can eat the whole fish), and the foie gras prepped nigiri style with sushi rice and chef's special sauce (the best seared foie gras, hands down). The service was amazing as well. We were given hot towels for our hands as we sat down, which just.. Feels nice. Our sake glass and the water glass were never empty. And the staff were readily available to explain the menu items and chef's philosophy as each course took place. I truly appreciate chef Sangtae's skills, his knowledge and his passion. I witnessed him take out one or two grains of rice from a portion he molded for a nigiri, which made me think that he may just know how many grains of rice are in his hand. EVERYTHING NUMBER ONE HERE! No, seriously...everything we ate here was amazing! Whoa, this place blew my socks off...or my sandals because it is summer. Weird pocket off Washington. We walked up and there was a little sign that said to please wait outside. When we walked in to the space, there were these cute little name tags with everyone's name at the bar so there was no confusion on where to sit. The space is small, quaint, minimalistic. We sat and they opened our champs and put it on ice (they are BYOB currently...take advantage!!!). There wasnt much speaking or anything. It was absolutely fantastic to just watch this master make our sushi. The staff was very nice and polite. I think they could benefit from some soft music in the space. Chef answered any questions we had, but in general, everyone kind of just talked quietly to each other. As the booze started flowing, we actually got to know our neighbors and it was a nice communal event. The best part is, one bite pieces for the most part so there wasnt a lot of waiting for everyone to finish before starting the next course. The fish was so fresh. Did you know? Omakase Yume is BYOB. They will get their liquor license soon, so try to take advantage of bringing your own Sapporo and sake while you can! We came here for the soft opening on the first night. We were sure what to expect and the omakase definitely wowed us and more. I won't be surprised if this place ends up with a Michelin star or two. It really makes you feel like you have been taken to Japan, enjoying the art of sushi in a little hole in the wall restaurant. The chef makes everything in front of you and he uses a brush to put on the sauce. We used our hands to pick up the nigiri and you have a little towel to clean off your fingers between each bite. The flight of tuna was absolutely delicious, starting off from less fatty to the famous Chutoro and Otoro. My other favorites were the squid and the salmon. Everything is just done over the top with so much attention to detail. Even the chowanmushi had uni in it. It was definitely one of the best omakases I've ever had. I'll definitely be back. First of all, this is such a beautiful, well-designed restaurant space. It's a single room with eight seats at the sushi bar, so the experience is very intimate. The sushi was incredible and it was very impressive to watch the chef's consistency and efficiency as he made each piece. Each fish was slightly different and there was a variety that you wouldn't find at every sushi place. My favorite was the sweet shrimp (ebi), with the egg custard (tamago) being a close second. My bf and I finally got to come here a couple weeks ago and it was a great experience. When we walked in we were warmly greeted and realized it was just us and one other couple. We were asked to sanitize our hands and we were seated on the other side of the room from the couple so it felt like we had the place to ourselves. There were glass dividers between us and the chef but it didn't feel like it was obstructing our view of him while he made our food. The woman who was waiting on us was the sweetest. She was very personable and took very good care of our every need. We did however wish that there was more interaction with the chef. He really only told us the names of the fish/nigiri and that was it. To start we ordered the Dassai 23 and a glass of Sauvignon Blanc. We felt that they had one of the better sake menus we've seen. It was more that just your basic sakes which we really appreciated. When the chef started making the nigiri for us the menu went by so fast. From beginning to end it was about an hour in total that we were there. Our favorite parts of the omakase were: The Grilled Miso Black Cod- perfectly cooked, flaky, juicy and flavorful from the miso. The rice it was served over was the same from the nigiri and it really showcased just how perfect that rice is on its own. Salmon- surprising because it was blow torched. We normally dislike torching because it tends to make the fish taste like butane and many sushi chefs over use the blow torch. This was the only piece that he used the torch on. After torching he quickly smoked it and it was phenomenal. Tilefish- excellent and unique texture. A fish we've never had before and a definite star of the meal even though it wasn't part of the main omakase. Unfortunately there were a couple that we weren't fans of too: Uni- We were told that the uni that night was from Hokkaido which was really exciting. The uni itself was nice, salty and creamy however it was as cold as ice cream. I was disappointed because I love uni but it was not pleasant to have it at such a cold temperature. 3 pieces of tuna- we understood what he was going for with the succession of the 3 different fatty layers of tuna, however we were disappointed that it took up 3 of the 12 nigiri spots on the menu. I just feel like that is for someone who is new to sushi. Would much rather have seen the golden threadfin bream or tilefish on the omakase menu. At the end of the tasting menu we also ordered "a la cart" or specials nigiri. We chose the golden threadfin bream, uni and tilefish. We thought they were omakase worthy and we were shocked that they weren't on the main menu for the evening. The fish we chose were unusual and delicious and we were so happy we decided to add them on. I think Omakase Yume has some of the best sushi in the city. It is priced well for the quality of fish and the unique experience. It showcases flavor combinations beyond what you would expect from traditional nigiri. The chef doesn't talk much, but always smile at us when he serves us dishes. The waitresses are extremely attentive. I would say I love most of the menu. Different sushi's are seasoned with different ingredients and presented in a nice way. Our favorites are fat tuna and Yellow jack. I feel the seasoning for the amberjack is too strong though. Omakase Yume is one of the best restaurants in the City of Chicago for nigiri, hands down. We got in last minute due to a cancellation and were totally delighted by the awesome 16-course tasting. From the Houbou to the Matcha Panna Cotta, everything was cooked perfectly. I'm traditionally a pretty critical reviewer, but all the fish used in the restaurant appeared to have been imported from Japan and was of the utmost quality. Interestingly, the Misoyaki--Gridded Miso Black Cod over rice--was a favorite of our group. It was an explosion of flavor on the pallet and absolutely delicious. I was also pleased with how well the team handled my gluten allergy, even with my last minute-reservation. Everything was handled without fuss, a welcome sight. It's times like these I like to reminisce of unforgettable dining experiences that stick with you regardless of the amount of time that has passed. Hubby and I had the fortune to dine here back in June of last year to celebrate our son's first birthday..by going out on a kid-free date! Everything about this place resonates with me, from the unassuming entrance (easy to walk by), the clean, intimate dining area, the quiet atmosphere, and focus on the artistry and magic of watching your meal be prepared in front of your eyes by Chef Park. Walking in I felt like being transported to Tokyo. The majority of folks arrived on time except for 1 couple, which I'm pretty sure everyone gave a death stare once they strolled in without apologies (secretly I was hoping they'd buy a round of nigiri on them for the trouble). Definitely be considerate of everyone since there are only 2 seatings/night and everyone is served at the same time per seating. Every dish was amazing, fresh, and beautifully presented. The progression was not too fast or slow, just the right pacing. My favorites were the sake salmon, otoro, butterfish, and wagyu. The matcha panna cotta dessert was one of the best I've ever had. At the end you can add items a la carte if you're still hungry. The amount of food on the tasting menu was satisfying enough, but Hubby and I couldn't resist adding the wagyu after several other couples ordered it and the irresistible smell wafted throughout the room. We've been lucky enough to try other omakase places since then, but Yume still stands out as my ultimate favorite in Chicago so far. The pace was just right, with ample time to savor each piece but not too long before we started to get bored. The best part of dinner was redeye fish piece. Ok so the night got off to a rocky start. T-13 minutes: We were running right on time, and then our Uber cancelled on us. No big deal. T-12 minutes: We started running so we would make our reservation on time. We would be a little sweaty but oh well. T-10 minutes: After a few flashes of lightning, the rain came. In large amounts. It was POURING. No umbrellas either. T-8 minutes: Still about 10 mins out even if we run. We called another Uber to meet us halfway to the restaurant, thinking that hopefully the timing would work out perfectly and shave a few precious minutes off of our journey. T-7 minutes: We are sprinting to the site where I called the uber. I'm carrying a 4 pack of bottled beer, because Omakase Yume allows you to BYOB for a small corkage fee. All of a sudden, the bottom of the thin, cardboard, water-logged beer-holder completely gives out. The 4 beers come crashing to the concrete below, and literally all explode like one huge malty bomb. Splatters all over my outfit. Due to our time crunch we continued sprinting, but another passerby yelled "You can't just leave that there!" He was right. The broken glass presented a tremendous safety hazard, particularly to the local canine population (we were next to a dog park, after all). We turned around and started picking up the pieces of broken glass, while continuing to get drenched by the torrential downpour. We scrambled as quickly as possible, and came out with a few battle scars. T-5 minutes: Still sprinting. Towards Uber meeting site. Morale is at a low point. Uber is in sight. Black Nissan Altima. We approach, and Uber pulls away seconds before the driver was able to see us. I increase my speed and chase Uber down. Attempt is unsuccessful. Uber pulls away, driver likely emitting an evil laugh. T-2 minutes: Still at least 8 minutes away. By this point, we had given up any hope on staying dry OR arriving on time. We take our time and walk slowly and deliberately. Clothes thoroughly soaked. T+6 minutes: We arrive and take the last two seats at the counter. Soaking wet and hands covered in blood. We were greeted with a very warm welcome from the staff at Yume. We were first handed the traditional warm, wet towel to wash our hands. However, the staff quickly realized that we were in greater need of a dry towel, and this problem was quickly solved. Unfortunately, a hand towel can not easily dry off an entire body. Oh well. The meal at Omakase Yume was absolutely fantastic. Chef Park's toppings on the sushi were extremely interesting and fitting, and really made this sushi experience unique among others. Excellent fish quality as well. The entire staff was very kind and attentive and provided some much appreciated background knowledge on certain dishes. Due to the seasonality of many sushi fish and Omakase Yume's access to fresh Japanese seafood, the menu changes greatly throughout the seasons, and we will definitely plan to return again during the winter. Also the decor is extremely cozy and comfortable. Nice little slice of Japan right here in Chicago! P.S. I might recommend enjoying the meal while soaking wet. If it is not raining outside I might suggest jumping into a fountain or taking a shower with your clothes on before heading to Yume. read more

This was my very first Omakase experience, and boy, it did not disappoint. The freshest of fish and the most excellent of service is provided by Chef Park and his staff. Chef Park is a master of his craft and handles everything with great care and precision. The staff are knowledgeable, willing and eager to share where each fish is from and how some are only available within particular seasons. It is a pretty intimate experience with 8 seats total, and everyone able to hear the conversations of the other. But it's a fun way to get to know some other people, if that's your thing. This particular Omakase is a 17-course meal, and before the dessert comes, you have the opportunity to order additional sushi from the specials menu. The whole experience was so good that I ordered two additional sushi, and if I'm being honest, I was almost brought to tears of how good everything was. Excellent sushi. Wow. Loved all of it This is a tiny restaurant with literally 8 seats so reservations are a must. And everyone must have the Omakase. Fantastic fresh fish. There was a tuna progression from lean to fatty which was divine. My personal favorites (because I can't narrow it down to one) were the salmon and the miso black cod. The fresh sliced raw salmon was placed into a box, then infused with smoke for 30 seconds, then seared along the edges with a torch. Lastly it's topped with a tiny bit of the chef's secret mixture of garlic, ginger and scallions which has been fermented for 2 weeks. I love sushi. Detest sushi laden with mayo, spicy mayo, and eel sauce but THIS sauce was so subtle and mild and delicious, and enhanced the smoky fish. So excellent. The miso cod was reminiscent of Nobu's black cod but I actually prefer Yuma's version. Yume marinates the cod in 2 different kinds of miso and it's so subtle. I love the Nobu version but Yume's version was markedly less sweet. The service was excellent. Helpful and insightful. What a delightful meal! Can't wait to go again. read more

Its hard to describe the dishes because we werent really told what was going on it's a quiet experience just know the fish is fresh n when more stuff are added its supper flavorful some fish get special seasoning like salt or other things others are just the fish. The rice was really flavorful n i dont like sushi rice only one course the rice wasnt packed well n fell apart. Alot of people complain about the fish being pre sliced but forget hes the only one back there n it makes the experience go by faster. The whole tasting menu was good they need to work on there cooked items though because some of them werent good feel like some of the specials should have been on the tasting menu because if u just eat that without the menu not really worth it because nothing on it is pricy besides the tuna belly. Loved how theres a dessert because it was so good if u add another one id be the happiest person ever :) the sushi with add ons were more flavorful then the plain sushi so i would add more to it to make it taste better because none of the courses with extra stuff took away from the flavor of the fish. If i didnt review it, it means it was good just ran out of space. If they improve the lil tweaks n work on the service can see them getting a michelin star also make the fish slices thicker. best things: Ebi/ black cod/ikura/uni/dessert/ penshell clam/ wagyu /caviar/ foie gras/ Akami/Chutoro/Otoro/Amberjack/salmon/ Appetizer ankimo (monk fish liver with ponzu sauce): first time i had monk fish liver n its decadent like there land relative lol. The ponzu sauce was good n the cucumbers n the onions added freshness but they didnt compliment the liver liver needs sweetness to control the gaminess Akami: amaizing theres otoro on top that adds richness it just was so succulent that it melted in ur mouth was so decadent n this is coming from someone who doesnt like tuna Chutoro: really delicous the fatty the tuna the more flavor it has Otoro: straight up tuna belly was so decadent n flavorful Amberjack: this was so delishious the seaweed on top gives it more of a seafood flavor that compliments the fish so well so good! Sake salmon: its a really cool presentation. U can taste the smoke n the aroma is amazing loved the onions n herbs on too for freshness that cuts through the richness Botan ebi: its really sweet like lobster n texturelly chewy Squid: im not really a squid person but texturally it was great n was so tasty Tara no misoyaki (grilled miso black cod): this was phenomenal fish was cooked perfectly and was so flavorful my only complaint wish the skin was crispy Miso soup: hmm i liked that it was really hot but it honestly wasnt that flavorful wasn't necessary Tamago: amazing usually i dont like egg dishes because there supper eggy but this was really good it had the perfect balance of sweet n savoryness Ikura +$10: this was amazing fresh salmon roe has more of a sea flavor n is more rich so worth it Uni +$14: was the best uni i ever had fresh uni is a lil more sweater n texturally more softer was Devine Dessert: panna cotta with red bean: this was amazing. Like it was perfect panna cotta was had the perfect texture the matcha crumble added bitterness n texture n the red bean added that uniqueness only complaint add more of both! Shirasu (juvenile sardines) +$11: this was the only dish i didnt like was really fishy not like the fish is bad just they didnt do a good job of counteracting that fishy taste Tairagai +$11(penshell clam): amazing its like a scallop but has a firmer texture n is not sweet n savory loved it Anago (salt water eel) +$14 it was amazing was so flavorful picture that eel u get at other sushi places just a billion times better cause its fresher Sanma (Pike) +$11: amazing so flavorful such an amazing fish Saba (mackerel) +$11 it was good but still had a fishy taste didnt do a good job at counteracting that Wagyu + $16: if u never had it, its the cheapest youll find its seasoned perfectly just wish it was cooked less n more things were added to make it more flavorful but was really good n would order it again n loved how they gave u two pieces one with rice n the other just like that Foie gras +$12 amazing was high quality n melted in ur mouth was overcooked but didnt have a livery taste to it wish it had something sweet with it but again cheapest foie so its a must Caviar +$30 amazing u really do taste that amazing rich decadent flavor wanted to order more thats how good it was read more

What a perfect place for omakase!! I am absolutely satisfied with my experience here tonight. The restaurant is very clean and has plastic clear walls for safety from Covid. All sushi are delicious and fresh. I will definitely visit here again. So happy that I found this place!! read more
