I ordered a burger (I think it was called a cowboy burger. Can't remember off the top of my head at this moment) and my dad ordered a chicken caesar salad. My dad says his chicken caesar was good, and my burger was good. They accept US dollars here, which is good news for people coming from the US...however, as of the time I write this review, 1 Canada dollar is equal to about 89 US cents, and if you give them US money, they treat it as Canadian money. In other words, $50 CAD is equal to $50 USD there. It's slightly a ripoff with the exchange rates nowadays. Most US Applebee's have free wifi, but I guess the Canadian restaurants don't, or maybe it was just the particular place we went to. Overall, everything was good. We may come back if we do come back to Thunder Bay.

The burgers looked good too. I however can't eat gluten so could not order any fried dish or really much of anything on the menu for that matter. What I eventually ordered was not marked gluten free but the ingredients looked safe. Of course i realised when it came out with a giant slice of garlic bread on top why it was not gluten free. I'm just sensitive though so I ate it. But I wish I had ordered a burger because it was so oily and bland. Neither the sautéed onions or the chicken were cooked properly resulting in a watery and oily dish. I'd say do what the regulars were doing and stick to some deep fried mozzarella sticks or something. And if you have dietary restrictions just avoid at all costs.

The food runners were so jolly and so interested in making sure you got exactly what you ordered. We noticed the same dishwasher working incredibly hard both nights, and it was obvious that every person plays an important role. The friendly bartenders, servers, kitchen staff, and support staff all worked together seamlessly with genuine pride and teamwork. Great restaurants don't happen by accident. It's clear the manager has built a culture where everyone supports one another and truly cares about the guest experience. We travel extensively, and seeing a team like this is rare. Gun Flint Tavern is a place we always recommend to anyone visiting Grand Marais, and after another wonderful weekend, we'll continue doing exactly that. We can't wait to come back!

The live acoustic music was outstanding and perfectly matched the relaxed lakeside atmosphere. Between the entertainment, craft beverages, and panoramic views of the harbor, it's easy to see why this has become a Grand Marais favorite. The male bartender team was exceptional hardworking, attentive, and always making eye contact to acknowledge guests, even during the busiest rushes. Their professionalism and hospitality stood out. During our six-day visit, the female bartenders seemed less engaged. That said, the overall experience was fantastic. Jeff and Susan Gecas created exactly what they envisioned when they opened The Gun Flint Tavern, a place where people can enjoy great food, craft-brewed beer, wine, live music, and one of the most beautiful views in town. The historic setting overlooking Harbor Park and Grand Marais Harbor only adds to the charm. We highly recommend stopping by for drinks, music, and the rooftop atmosphere. We moved downstairs to have dinner on the street-level bar and restaurant. Gabby is an exceptional bartender and server. He took care of every table in the restaurant effortlessly.
