As a lover of sweets, I have been to a lot of bakeries. But I have to say, On the Rise has it down. Not only do they have a wide variety of treats, they also cater to the Gluten Free crowd. Although I am not gluten free myself I have tried a few of their offerings and they are amazing. I would pick them over gluten products haha! The coffee is fantastic and every time I go in there are new items to choose from. Betty (the baker) makes everything fresh and that is her top concern. We used OTR for our wedding cake and gosh, I could not have been happier with the outcome. Not exaggerating but it was till date the best cake I have ever tasted, the strawberry filling over vanilla was just heavenly. Nothing short of amazing! We used On the Rise for our wedding last year and had cupcakes along with a small cake on top for us to cut. I was completely blown away! The cupcakes were a lemon buttermilk w/lemon Italian meringue buttercream, a devils food cupcake with chocolate meringue buttercream, red velvet cupcakes with cream cheese frosting and chocolate curls, and my absolute favorite vanilla cupcakes stuffed with raspberry jam, raspberry italian buttercream and toasted coconut on the edge. We ordered more than we had guests hoping that we would be able to take some home with us, but our guests went up for 2nds and 3rds--and even took them for the ride home! Betty is wonderful and such a pleasure to work with. She was so helpful and made everything so easy for us. I'm very indecisive so she had plenty of yummy suggestions for flavors, I dont think I could have done it without her. We got a cake for my sisters wedding shower (which was at The Boynton) from this bakery. It was delicious!!! We got a beach themed round cake, genoise with buttercream frosting & strawberries in the middle. Everyone really loved it! Betty was very nice to work with, always very responsive to any questions. She loaned us her cake stand which made for a great presentation & pictures. The cake prices were a little high at first but she was very willing to work with us to lower the price as much as possible. It was nice to know she could work with our budget. All I can say about On The Rise Baking is that it is quite honestly as good as it gets. I have a serious coffee dependency, and I am no stranger to the local coffee shops. I didn't realize how many delicious coffee and tea options they had until a friend brought me here for lunch one afternoon. I heard about them because my cousin got their wedding cake from there (which was a huge hit- so beautiful and even more delicious), but I had assumed that they only had pastries. I was wrong! They have a fresh homemade soup daily, fantastic paninis, and of course, the best desserts I have ever had. I had a pesto and veggie panini and a cup of minestrone soup. The panini was golden brown with an herbacious olive oil taste to the bread, and the soup was a colorful explosion of super-fresh vegetables and definitely a homemade stock. As we ate, the aroma of the delicious goodies baking in the back filled the air. I was IMPRESSED (and now craving sweets) so I had to try dessert. The double chocolate bourbon tart was probably the most insane, sinfully delicious thing I have ever tried. Upon multiple trips back, I now know that I also love their mousse cakes and their scones!! The coffee is always, always fresh and hot, and the girls there make a fantastic latte. I like to think of myself as a bit of a coffee connoisseur (and a tough critic...i know what I like) and I have always loved every drink they have made me. I also have to compliment the owner on her genuine kindness and hiring people of the same caliber. The help is attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable. In addition to having great products, the location is perfect. It is right in Tatnuck Square, amidst a local meat market, fish market, salon, etc. Its a perfect one-stop shop to get all the days errands done in one place, and choosing a local business instead of a chain. Since my first experience at On the Rise, any time I need a cake or dessert to bring somewhere they are my only choice. The owner has always accommodated my needs and the response from the desserts never ceases to amaze me--she outdoes herself every time! Part of me wanted to keep this place a secret because it is a perfect little sanctuary where I relax with a cup of tea and some work (they have free wi-fi) but its just so wonderful that people deserve to know about it. The owner is very friendly and helpful and informed me that she plans to expand her sandwich menu in the next couple of months. I ordered the chicken and pesto panini and it is one of the most delicious sandwiches I have ever had! I would even rate this panini above Panera's paninis. The bread was very crispy and had a great crunch. The pesto was freshly made on site and the chicken tasted fresh and not too dry. I had to wait 15-20 minutes for the panini, but it was worth the wait and I was informed of the wait ahead of time, so I did not mind. I also ordered an iced chai. The owner informed me that she uses milk from a local farm in MA, I forget which town. Oregan chai mix was used in the iced chai. I also ordered a Blondie, which was dense and sugary. I am new to Worcester and went to On the Rise Baking on the recommendation of a friend. I've been there twice and do like it. Really good pastries. Wife had the Chocolate Tart, I had the Apple Torte. Even if I named them wrong, they were both excellent! It is a nice, small place with a comfortable atmosphere to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee and read the paper. As good as the desserts are, the prices are high and the servings are (relatively) small. I am more likely to buy a full dessert that I can take home, especially when having friend over for dinner, than buy slices of cake, torte, or whatever. Four small slices cost us $16. Recommend that you do NOT try to park on the street near the bakery. Meters only last for a half hour, and there is parking in the rear. read more

After getting a flat tire on my way out to the bakery for a tasting, Betty not only offered to meet with us as late as 9:00pm, but offered for us to just come by and take cake samples to go and then discuss on the phone! We couldn't have been more thrilled with our cake! It was decadent, gorgeous and exactly what I wanted. It was spectacular, both to look at and to eat. She worked with me, my florist and the chef to get the exact look that I wanted which included fresh flowers AND fruit in my color scheme. She went to several produce and natural food stores including an Asian market to get specific fruits to match the color! I'm a big believer in second chances, but after the third time in here I have to say I am still unhappy with my experiences. All three times I have had to deal with the same girl, the chef from the back calls her Neeco. She always seems flustered and spaced out. Each time when I get my over priced pastries, they are thrown in the box and mangled before I can get them to my car. This would be okay if they were from me but it is hard to give crushed pastries to my family and boss. On top of this, I am hesitant to ask questions because I don't want the mocking answer I usually receive. The worst of the worst happened the last time I was in. Knowing that this bakery carries gluten-free products I kept going back. The last thing I got had a hair baked straight into it. I would have gone back to show them but after three bad experiences, why bother.
