This location is very convenient for me! I love to pop in to shop for clothes for my little ones. I have gotten really lucky on shoes, school uniforms, swim suits, and clothing items. They usually sell based on what season it is, and they switch over to the new season about 1-2 months a head of time. I have sold here a few times. Clothing items I typically receive $1 per item. Unfortunately they don't pay the same day, they send you a check that takes up to 3 weeks to arrive. I drove 40 minutes on a Saturday and arrived at 3:40pm only for them to say that they're closed for buying clothes because they have a lot of clothes to go through. So they don't buy clothes during normal business hours. I asked what hours they buy and they just told me when they're open for business. Customer service sucks. read more

Decided to give this location a try since I hadn't been in the store in years and was disappointed. I took 1 bin of clothes in for them to go through they accepted 29 items for $30 then as I'm at the counter checking out the employee tells me oh yea we're only giving store credit today is that ok umm not really. Nowhere was there a sign stating if you brought in items to sell it would be for store credit and no communication about it at check in. Also walking in this store it smelled funky the clothes they have to sell a lot of the items had stains, or looked like it was really outdated. Customer service leaves something to desired, to say the least. I patiently waited for 20 minutes, giving the associates space to ring up a difficult customer ahead of me. After 20 minutes, they opened another register for another customer (so I was also cut in line). When I mentioned I was cut and had been waiting, I was met with simply an, "Oh, okay." I get that people don't get paid enough to care to catch certain things, but honestly I wouldn't be writing this review if I had gotten a simple apology. It's extra frustrating as those were not 20 minutes of passively waiting, but waiting as I entertained a toddler (from touching all the toys being sold by the register) while bumbling around 9 months pregnant. There is a sign that said customers must "be kind" or service will be refused. But it's so wrong to give the kindness of courtesy, with much effort, just to be overlooked because I don't cause as much trouble as the next person. Yes, there is more context -- it was unclear to me where the line started because there were a few members in the party being checked out ahead of me taking up a lot of the checkout, and none of the employees would give me the time of day, which is normally fine. I actually started queuing up in the right place and moved to the other side because of that. Regardless of if I was where I was supposed to be, it's not hard to see me standing there for 20 minutes... it's negligence, choosing to ignore it. Other than the person at the register, there were two other employees that could've caught me standing there. One was doing intake and the other seemed to be helping the other employee check out, so I didn't rush them. Agh, people. Just say sorry for the oversight. Honestly..youre better off donating your items or selling it yourself online. They buy your stuff for so low and sell it for so high. I brought in 79 items (yes I counted them and took pictures before bringing it in). It was our first time here had to sign in using the QR code. Then she told us to come back in 30 mins. We came back in 30 mins and they didn't even touch our box yet. They said in another 15 mins and they will text us when it's ready. We got a text, came back in and they told us it was on accident and it'll be another 15 mins. At this point we were ready to just take everything back and leave. Such a waste of time. When we finally got another text we came in and she told us they rejected most of our clothes because they weren't able to take them. Either "over-worn" "too old" etc. mind you most of the items we have were worn once or twice. Since kids grow way too fast. We have a lot of name brand stuff like puma, true religion, adidas, nike etc no stains, no wear and tear or anything. Some were even brand new with tags. Seems like they mainly look for walmart brand. They said they took the maternity pillow and was only able to take a couple shirts and offer us $23.15. They didn't even show us what they took just told us "a couple items". We were thinking the pillow and a couple shirts/onesies no more than 5. We agree to it. I went home put everything out and counted everything again. Their "couple items" was a total of 26 items for $23.15. They took 26 items including a brand new pillow for less than $1 and they're going to resell it for way more. Some of their clothes on the rack were price almost the same as if you were to buy new items. A total scam. They gave away my clothes without authorization! If I could give 0 stars, I would. I dropped off 6 bags of high-quality clothes and shoes. The store called saying they needed to be washed because they smelled like storage. Since I live out of town, I called and spoke to two separate employees (including Kevin) who both explicitly agreed to hold my bags until the following week. When I came back (a little over a week), my items were gone. The manager, Maya, told me the owner had donated all 6 of my bags! She claimed they only hold items for 24 hours--a policy absolutely no one told me about at drop-off. They never called to give a final warning, and gave away my property (really nice clothes gently used) without my permission. Unprofessional and dishonest conduct across the board, from the staff to the manager and owner. They might as well just admit they only accept donations. Save your time, money, and nice clothes--do NOT sell here. I saw other reviews of a similar nature on Google. It's been going on for quite some time but I'll put a stop to this soon. read more

It is my first time shopping at Once Upon A Child in Elk Grove. So I have no idea how the store look like until I opened the front door. They have huge amounts of kids clothes jammed up inside the not very big store on the racks. The two ladies working there seem very busy at the cashier counter. But I still receive a nice greeting when I walk into the store. I don't really like the feeling of a overloaded store with hundreds of clothing all over the limited space. I am overwhelmed by the amount of clothing in there. It seems they were organized but hard to find what I wanted. Searching my son's room for items that can be sold or donated can be a sad task. It's a reminder of how fast he is growing and sends me down memory lane of his baby and toddler days. After finding a tool play set that he no longer engages, I decided to take it to Once Upon A Child. My intentions were not to cash in on it, simply to free up some space in his room in anticipation of Christmas. Upon arriving at the store, I was barely greet by an employee working behind the counter. When I say barely greeted, I mean that the employee only acknowledged me because I made unwavering eye contact with him. After ringing up a customer, he assessed the play set and told me to give him five minutes. After he and another employee discussed the play set and lack of room in the store, he told me that the play set is worth $35, and that they could pay me $17 for it. After accepting the offer, I walked out of the store $17 richer and a bit sad that I had parted ways with a toy that has been in our household for 5 years (yes I associate every item with a memory). I'm very thankful for establishments like Once Upon A Child. When the local food banks are not accepting toy donations, they act as an alternative. However, when businesses are struggling to hold on due to the pandemic, it's a bit disheartening to receive poor customer service from a place that survives based on reselling items that they purchase. The one in Roseville is even better priced. This location also has the rudest employees. I get working in customer service is tough and you encounter rude customers probably all day everyday. This location is smaller then the one I usually go to. The employees were very nice. They have a good selection of items. After I picked up my items, I was asked if I wanted to donate the items they didn't take. I declined and had to sign a slip for that. That was a first, not all locations do that. read more

While I was in there they were gossiping and making it very obvious they were talking about people in the store. I took a bag of clothes. They took it all but never went over how much they were paying me till I asked them. So after I used the balance to buy other items. I asked the lady well did u guys take it all. She then says with an attitude well if it's not on the counter then yes. But she had no idea what they did with the clothes I sold. I don't even think they went through the bag at all and just put a price on how much they were going to pay me. This place may be fine to buy from but I do NOT recommend selling here. You will go through the hassle of bringing large items that are hard to carry/transport from the car, and then they will give you such a lowball offer they should feel ashamed. I was very unhappy with their offer but because it was such a struggle bringing things to them in multiple trips, I felt I had no choice. I brought a beautiful step2 play kitchen in perfect condition, complete with all of the food, pots, pans, spoons, etc. I had bought this kitchen for well over $200 new and it was absolutely perfect. Along with that, I brought a go-kart that was a very special gift for my daughter, and we had bought that for over $200 as well. Again, perfect condition. The only reason we brought it in is my daughter wasn't using it anymore and it was taking space in the house. I also had a shopping cart...very high quality, metal one, and a toy cash register. They gave me $24 for everything together!!! Ridiculous! I could have sold the go kart for a good $100 with no problem, as well as the kitchen for an easy $75 had I sold it myself. I will never support this place again, and would rather donate than to let them take advantage of my family. Don't sell here. My brother went in and took over $500 worth of semi new and new baby girl cloths to sale and they told him they'd give him a call back regarding the worth of the close so he could then go pick up whatever payment they were gonna issue they didn't call him that whole day then proceed to call him the next day and say oh we donated all the cloth you brought " because it's been 24 hrs since you came and you didn't come claim anything " when they said they would call him that is so unprofessional and something only Thief's do !! I feel taken advantage of from the Elk Grove store. I brought in brand names- mostly Janie & Jack, Gap Kids, H&M, Carters, Levi's, Adidas, Polo, Vans, Abercrombie kids, and they gave me roughly one dollar per item. Some items new, the rest barely used. They picked my nicest items and told me they did a calculation based on brand/condition/need? I had no expectations so I figured I would just take their offer. But after seeing how much they are reselling these dresses and outfits for I can't believe they would low ball me so bad. They did go through my stuff quickly so I was done fairly fast, which was a positive I guess. But the girl who helped me was not friendly, sort of abrupt in tone and demeanor, & the other workers didn't smile or offer any help either. I got the feeling customers were kind of a bother. I went to a different location and had a completely different experience. They were nice, the store was big, more organized, cleaner, and they were more fair on the pricing. I think they all use the same kind of pricing system so I don't understand how there was such a difference in what they would take and the pricing. I was in the area looking for a secondhand baby store to shop because kids and babies just change sizes and needs so fast, I find secondhand is a great way to save money. It's great that this is specific to kids and babies vs the thrift stores which don't all have big sections for kids or baby. This location is well stocked with product. We noticed lots of baby bath tubs, which was something we needed. They have tons of clothing in stock as well. There were some other little items like wraps, covers, kid shoes, and toys/books too. They do have sales on top of their regular pricing posted, and sometimes special sales if you're part of the rewards or text group. The staff was super friendly and we got a great deal on some clothes and a $7 baby bath tub. Not bad! We will definitely be checking them out from time to time when we are in town. My only concern while I was here was a giant roof pipe leak was happening towards the back of the store. I'm sure it's probably an issue the lease management is supposed to deal with which as we all know can take longer when its in someone elses hands, but it was definitely a little concerning as we shopped around.
