Times are tough, right? The economy is not so great, cost-of-living is high, and wages aren't growing as rapidly as any of us hard working shlubs would like. Of course, this is the perfect time to end my daughter's twelve year reign as an only child and add to our family. ;) What's a thrifty mama (who also abhors mass consumerism and wastefulness) to do? Hit up Once Upon A Child, of course! Not all Once Upon A Child locations are created equal, let me tell you. However, the Schererville OUAC is pretty awesome. There isn't an overwhelming amount of product here. However, the items available are quality items. Think clean. Think newish. Think about buying when you see it because said quality items get snapped up right quick. The Inglesina carriage I was not-so-secretly coveting showed up one day in almost new condition. Price tag? $200. Not bad when one considers that the same carriage combo retails anywhere between $600-$800. Of course, they have even more budget friendly stroller options, but I have this thing for prams (or at least, the most pram-like version I could afford). Also readily available are an entire line of Fisher Price's Snug-a-bunny items (swing, bouncy chair, rock and play) for a wee one's napping, vibrating, and swinging needs. The clothing sections are well marked and easy to navigate. Here is another area where I appreciate quality of quantity. Jam packed racks of sub-par and stained items? Not my thing. A good selection of clean and accurately labeled baby clothes? Yes, please. And thank you. Overall, the Schererville OUAC is a great little store for us mamas who want to stretch our dollars as far as possible. Hit them up and see for yourself. I bought a couple things here for a baby my total around $100, not complaining. What makes me think, wow I should just go buy new items somewhere else, is the attitude and rude older employee. She was rude when she saw a baby in my hand and I asked here where the price was listed on a big jumper she says on the bottom and walks away... why thank you for your help. Instant goes to help and sweet talk a white couple that walk in. When I was paying for all the items she was being so rude I felt maybe this was because I'm not white. So if you're a POC I suggest going to other resell shops in the area instead of this one. read more

I would rather give my kids clothing away for free than sell to them. The two women at the register were rude didn't look through all of my items just the things at the top I'm guessing because it was close to closing. I watched them through the window as I waited in my car and saw them talking trash about the items I brought in and then tried to low ball me and give me $9. I ended up taking all up my items back because one of them tried to insult me saying my kids clothes needed to be freshly laundered as if I pulled my kids clothes out of the dirty clothes to sell them please be for real. As they were saying this they were tagging a real dingy and wrinkled Jean jacket from someone else. read more

If you are an African-American individual do not go to this store. The little young people that work there are very racist towards African American patrons! They low ball African Americans on our items name brand, clean in new condition. The non African American employees(all) go laughing and bickering when a black customer walks in. Caucasian customers walk-in and they are properly greeted. Their items are properly assessed, and they are given a fair value for the things that they are bringing in. This is not the same for the African-American guest that go here customer service is very crappy and the entire store needs sensitivity, training and inclusion training, since dealing with African-Americans is such a hard thing to do. Severely disappointed especially after my last visit. If I could give the employees and their antics a -7 rating I would. DO BETTER! read more

I didn't want to give such a low rating but i almost feel compelled to. I do enjoy purchasing the 10 for 10 onesies. I came in with a Dock a Tot Deluxe+ and a boppy (both in perfect condition, no stains, no smell, no rips, etc.) to resell. I also brought in a bag of sandals (i don't expect a ton of money from clothes or shoes). However, i don't understand their buying prices. I purchased my dock a tot for $195 (in the style Carrara Marble, a quick Google away). The boppy was $45. I was offered $34 for both along with some sandals that they took from the bag. For that amount I might as well donate them! I understand needing to make your money back when you're a resell shop, but for things that are in perfect condition and that sell quickly, i would expect a better offer. When i looked at other boppy's they had at this store, they were reselling for $20 which i thought wasnt a bad resell price considering that's less than half price. Don't expect to get anything even remotely close to what you paid for for well maintained items though. read more

Was disappointed that I was not greeted when I entered the store and was also not asked if I needed any help as I overheard 2 other employees address multiple other customers. Had to admit it did make me feel somewhat awkward as I seemed to be the only hispanic customer at the time that was shopping. Either way, the store itself has great prices. I purchase a lot of 10 for $10 onesie's. But as for this specific location, I won't be returning. I think I'll keep my business in the Chicago area stores that have better customer service. read more

It was my first time going to this store and I really liked it! I sold and bought. I had a great experience. The store was clean, everything was organized, the shoes were in bins that had the sizes on the outside of them. The prices were decent. I took in 2 big bags of clothes and some other stuff. They didn't buy everything, but did buy alittle more then 1 big bag of clothes. They gave me $46.00 for it. I bought a stroller, a pair of jeans and 2 outfits for my baby. And only had to pay $22.00 out of pocket. Super happy with it all! I will be going back to shop their more often! read more

I can always find something I can use here. Tote bag Tuesday's helped get my daughter fully clothed for the winter time. Be warned though, it is easy to spend hours in here looking at all the cute clothes and little toys. It makes it so easy to stick to a budget for most of your child's need. The girls there are very friendly and helpful. If I have any questions they will answer it to the best of their ability or take my question to another employee that would have the answer. I am also thankful that they updated their rewards program, I always used to lose my card. Now, I can stride in with confidence knowing that I can access my rewards without ever checking my purse for that card. read more

I really loved shopping here. I came back with a bag of clothes some still had a tag on it from the store, like old navy and some other places. I dropped the bag off came back and she said she could not take anything. The clothes were never taken out of the bag. That's fine. I didn't appreciate that though. She didn't even see the leapster in the bag. She would have definitely taken that. read more

We like it here. With three boys to clothe you can guess we spend a pretty penny. This is a great place for things like pajamas and play clothes, things they'll outgrow so fast you could care less if they've been worn by total strangers before. The one thing I will say is be weary of things with batteries. Purchased a crib soother here when our youngest was born, talking a couple of years ago, and when we got it home and went to put new batteries in we opened it up only to see old batteries had leaked and it was a nightmare inside. But other than that this is the place to go for your clothing/stroller/swinger/bouncer/ boppy needs. read more

I was there today with my oldest daughter buying jeans for her to wear to school. My four year old tagged along and was actually being a pretty good sport about it. She hadn't asked for anything all day, at any of the store we had been at. When we got to OUAC, she found a shirt that she said she "LOVED" and I told her to throw it in, that she could get it. She was so excited. Well, we got to the counter and it didn't have a tag on it so they told us we could not buy it!!! They said I could leave my phone number and that they would call me and I could come back to purchase it. REALLY? It isn't like I took the tag off. I'm assuming it was 3.50 just like all the other shirts there. They didn't have to get all snippy and rude about it. We left with the jeans I bought and my four year old couldn't understand why I didn't buy her the shirt I told her I would buy her. I was already in a bad mood because I brought in several boxes of clothing and nice new Nike, Reebox, NB and Stride Rite shoes from my three daughters, some of their gently used toys, a nice stroller that had been used once, a bouncer seat that we rarely used and then was offered 10 bucks for like 4 items. read more
