We had a amazing time on the boat this morning with Kailey. She took us three miles out to swim with the sharks and made us feel comfortable and safe while teaching us more about them. I was scared at first but once I got into the water all my fears went away. The sharks were mellow but very close by us. After following them on Instagram for over a year, I finally got the chance to dive with them since I was coming to Hawaii for an Optometry conference. The experience was well worth the wait. These guys are professional to the core, and will guide you on an unforgettable experience. First, keep in mind that rough weather conditions might result in a change in appointment, as happened with me. This is only to ensure our safety. The dive lasted about two hours, in which we went to a shark aggregation site and witnessed at least 40 Galapagos and Sandbar Sharks circle us. I felt safe the entire time as I witnessed these misunderstood predators in their natural habitat. If you are an experienced freediver, be sure to bring your own weight belt and longfins (they have normal sized fins to loan if needed). The guide will take you down one by one if you feel comfortable doing so. Don't think you need to be a freediver for this experience, though, most in our group just snorkeled, and it's still an amazing experience. The education aspect of the dive is very valuable. This company works very hard to change misinformed assumptions about sharks. You will leave it wanting to do more for ocean conservation. Last thing to keep in mind is that if you end up staying in the Waikiki area, it is about an hour drive to the North Shore site. Be sure to plan ahead. read more

Here is what you get. 6 fellow snorkelers (max) and 2 marine biologists with you in the water for about 30-45min with sharks. Dive down and say hello face to face. For us, it was a beautiful day, lots of beautiful 10-15 feet long Galapagos sharks swimming 10 feet below us. We learned a lot about the sharks on the way out and on the way back. I've wanted to dive with these guys since I moved to the island a year and a half ago. I was finally able to and it was soooo awesome. The dive master Sophie, was so excited to educate us on the sharks we were going to see, you could really tell that she enjoyed her job and cared a lot about the pretty pretty sharks. Life changing! I recommend this experience for EVERYONE. If you have a fear of sharks(like most people) this will undoubtedly change your opinion. I was nervous at first to get in the water but as soon as I got in I was fearless! The guides explained how to behave in the water and what to look for to spot some "famous" sharks. Ocean was the first in the water and she counted about 40 sharks.. lucky us! Once we were in she would tell us when we could free swim or when we needed to hold onto the boat line. It was very professional, very controlled, and so safe I cannot emphasize enough. It was amazing to be around such a dominate creature in their own territory.. and still feel comfortable. We got a full hour in the water and we even spotted a scalloped hammerhead towards the outer boundaries. On the ride back, they gave us more information about pelagic research and how we can help save sharks. I have always been a shark lover.. but I would now consider myself an advocate. So much fun! Most people have a fear of sharks, my husband and I included....until One Ocean! We just completed our second dive and would do it again and again and again. They are understanding that most people attending are scared of sharks and will prepare you for the dive. Probably even change your perception of sharks ;-) RECOMMENDATIONS: 1. If you are prone to sea sickness or even if you aren't sure--bring SEA BANDS or sea sickness medicine. I've been on boats before without getting sick, but got sick on both our dives. Wished I would've prepared so I could enjoy the whole experience fully. 2. Bring plenty of dry clothes to change into afterwards 3. This was an amazing and indescribable experience! As soon as I got into the water I wasn't scared anymore. It's amazing how peaceful diving and swimming with the sharks can be. The crew and safety divers were a huge part in making this a great experience because they are so passionate about what they do and that eased any fear I had about getting into the water. I definitely recommend the photo package, Blake and Ocean did an amazing job at making sure my friend and I got good pictures while watching out for us and they turned out great. I did the pelagic shark dive for my husbands birthday today and WOW it was hands down the BEST thing I've ever done in my life. I'm going to admit I was really scared the entire week leading to our dive. We were so lucky to have the beautiful Ocean Ramsey join us on the dive and she assured me I was going to be perfectly fine and safe. Words cannot express the amount of joy my heart felt diving under water and seeing these majestic creatures. All my life I have been obsessed with sharks but was completely terrified of them because of how Hollywood movies portrayed them. Not only do I have a better understanding of them but I also have a huge respect for them. To anyone who is scared to do this...DON'T BE! One Ocean Diving is 100% professional. The ocean was flat, the Sharks were plenty and beautiful, some jumping dolphins and humpback whales got spotted during the boat ride. That gets 5 stars easily. But... I got pretty frustrated with the experience. This is the type of snorkeling where the crew wants you to hold the boat line and stay on the surface.because they assume you don't know to swim maybe? If you're like me a diver with DM certification/500 dives plus dives, you won't like be screamed at you because you take the initiative to go 2 feet down in the water (especially if 2 minutes earlier it was ok), and when it feels the people who pays for the picture package gets more underwater time- because they need to get their pictures done maybe?! When you remove your mask for 2 seconds on the surface after hearing the word "whale!" And get screamed at you (again) : put your mask back or go back on the boat (ok I also don't want to pollute the ocean - and it's also my $100 mask - but it kinda made me laugh since a crew member accidentally dropped a snorkel on the way). Finally it's super expensive for 40 minutes (max ?!) in the water, you don't get any snacks or even water. I paid the same price for 2 dives in Hawaii where I spent 5 (fantastic) hours on a boat, where dive gear was included and drinks fruits and sandwiches were provided. I love ocean and sharks so much and will do that again, but I'm sure there are plenty of other companies to give my $ too. read more

I had a friend text me and ask if I wanted to go shark diving. "Sure" I thought I'll be safe begin a cage. It was only after I had already agreed to go that I looked at the website and realized there is no cage! To be honest, almost instantly my heart rate shot up as the theme song to Jaws started to play in my head. I searched the site thoroughly and looked for reviews of any deaths or dismemberment a that surely must have occurred, that would give me a logical excuse as to why I couldn't do it. While I didn't find any reasonable excuse to bail on my friend without having to admit I was big chicken I did find that the company is run by two people I had already heard of. If you fly Hawaiian Airlines enough you might have been as lucky as I was to come across an editorial about Ocean Ramsey and her conservation efforts around the Pacific. If nothing else the photos of an athletic woman hanging on to HUGE white shark would grab your attention. You may have heard Juan by his Instagram name @juansharks. The guy has posted some seriously sweet shots of all variety of marine life, but the toothy sharks always got my attention. My experience was nothing less than EPIC. After the safety briefing I totally knew what to expect and how to act in the water. I learned more about the sharks we were diving with and even some we weren't in that trip than I have in the many years I have watched "Shark Week" on the Discovery Channel. Like a true gentlemen I let my female friend go first and after seeing that she wasn't treated like fish food. I decided I'd take the plunge as well. Within seconds I felt comfortable in the water and started looking at the Sharks in a completely different light. There were something like 20+ sharks initially and we all felt completely at ease. The sharks gracefully swam around and came up to investigate who their new visitors were, which made for some great photos. There wasn't a moment that I felt in danger, Juan was in the water with us monitoring the behavior and taking some photos. I really have a new understanding, at least a better understanding of how so many people I have met love sharks. They really were quite amazing, and each kind of had a bit of personality. I have since told quite a few people about the experience and tried my best to talk a few out of doing a caged dive. (No disrespect to those guys) but this experience is simply like nothing else. Since I live here I will most definitely be back and plan on dragging as many people with me as I can. Another bonus- these guys run a non profit research org as well. So you can feel good knowing that your helping to fund additional research and conservation efforts and not just being touristy. read more

Went on 2 shark dives with the one ocean diving team. Both times were amazing. Once you get in the water surrounded by 20+ sharks, it's hard to feel anything but amazed. Ocean and her team are very welcoming and knowledgeable. You can tell they are very passionate about shark conservation and marine life in general. We spent about an hour in the water. Let me tell you, that hour goes by fast. If you get sea sickness, take dramamine or some motion sickness medicine beforehand. The second time I went, the water was choppy and I forgot to take dramamine. I was enjoying myself too much to be sick. .. that is until I got out of the water. Don't make the same mistake I did. read more

We weren't entirely sure what to expect. Would we spend 15 minutes in the water? Half an hour? Would there be a few sharks? A lot? A bunch of different kinds? Well it turns out we got to spend close to an hour in the water with close to 30 sharks of two different kind of sharks (sandbar and Galapagos)! We spent most of the time hanging onto lines close to the boat, but we were periodically allowed to dive down to get a closer look at some of the sharks (in snorkel gear). The sharks were impressive! I learned for the first time that sharks form what's called a dominance column; the more dominant sharks are closer to the surface and the less dominant sharks stay beneath them, forming a column that extended deeper than we could actually see. With fins on we were actually "bigger" than most of the sharks, plus the fact that there were a bunch of us together means that the sharks viewed us as being more dominant than us and tended to stay beneath us where we could check them out. Some of them would periodically swim around to our periphery to check us out (sharks are apparently very curious!), which is why we were told to continually be looking around us and checking behind us so that we could see the sharks as they got closer. It sounds a little crazy being willing to go into the open ocean with predators, but the sharks were very calm and docile, like most fish I've snorkeled with in the past. Forrest and Jules made us feel very safe with their guidance and instructions, and I knew that if there were ever any potential for trouble they would usher us out of the water immediately (which they never did; in fact the only time they asked us to get out of the water it was because we'd scared all the sharks away by being too dominant. We gave them a little space, they came back, and we got in again to look at them more). It was a truly unique experience. I chose this tour instead of a cage tour primarily because I wanted to spend more time in the water (most cage tours advertised around 15 minutes in the water), and they truly delivered. With all the different things you can do in Hawaii, I'm not sure if I would do this again any time soon, but I highly recommend it if you're looking for some excitement, looking to learn more about nature, and enjoy snorkeling or being in the water. read more

MUST DO while on Oahu! I lived on Oahu for 5 years, and of all the activities I did, this was by far my absolute favorite. I've loved it so much I've gone on 4 dives with them, each time encouraging my friends and family to join me! Even the most reluctant of friends have had the most amazing time. The One Ocean team is incredibly mindful, safe and professional. You are carefully watched after and properly prepared prior to your dive. My only advice is to listen and carefully follow your guide's advice and you will have no problems during your dive. Me and my boyfriend did whale watching and scuba diving before we decided to book open water swimming with sharks... We should have skipped the first 2 and gone straight to one ocean diving in the first place! This was the most unbelievable experience we've ever had! I was terrified at first but Juan, our shark expert has 15+ years of experience and we also had a marine biologist on board and both were wonderful and super informative! On the boat ride out to the dive site, both Juan and our marine biologist educated us on the type of sharks we would see and went into detail about sharks and their agnostic behaviors to look for. They gave us so much awesome information on sharks and how misunderstood these creatures are! It made me more comfortable to actually step foot in the water by the time we got to our site. Even Chick Fil A has a bad review now and than. I can say without a doubt that One Ocean is the best experience in Oahu. One Ocean answered any question we had, was always communicative and inspired us to help save sharks. Never did we feel if we were in harms way. Juan and Dom were the best crew. Never did we feel that the business was shady. These are some of the best people supporting what they feel is the best cause out there. They take sharks which are misunderstood and help us on the boat understand. * Don't get me wrong at the end of the day sharks are still predators and I won't go jumping in the ocean trying to swim with sharks. Beyond epic experience. My sister and I got off their boat at the end of the trip more educated, with huge smiles, & wishing we could go out again. Thinking back, we should've foregone the shower and gone back out for another trip before our flight. It's that amazing. Juan and Ocean are such passionate, friendly, and open people. It's hard not to start to love sharks and the ocean as much as they do. The groups are small (I think 6 max) and 2-3 people go out into the water with one of them at a time for safety reasons. The anticipation, fear, and anxiety goes away once you lower yourself into the water. From then on, it's beautiful, peaceful, and calming. Imagine swimming in deep blue waters with these shy & misunderstood creatures while listening to the singing of humpback whales. At no time did we feel like we were in danger. The boat ride out is pretty choppy. Instead of Dramamine, we got scopolamine patches and put it on the night before (since we were on the 7 AM boat). Driving out and back from Waikiki was torture due to the drowsiness but it negated the nausea that we would've felt on the boat. GoPro: bring your own or rent one from them. I wish we got video. I was a late addition to this experience, friends had invited me to free swim with sharks on our trip to Oahu. I politely declined (inside my head I thought them crazy for wanting to purposely seek out these "Dangerous" creatures) and planned to do a safe luau. Fast forward to our trip, I was again asked to join the Pelagic Research and animal interaction snorkel, (still not sure what Pelagic means, have to google that) when 1 person backed out for health reasons. I think it was a sign to face my fear of swimming in the ocean, seeing that dreaded fin and panicking! I agreed with reservations, telling myself I will go along but may not enter the sharky waters (yes I know that is not a real word) now to the actual review, don't know how many would get this far through this weird story review but at least you know this a real person writing this review not a computer or someone being paid to write a good review. No one would pay for this, although it is a great review I promise you! Quick recap, Juan and Ocean were our guides for the day, we chose to do a 4 hour tour with multiple stops to see different species of sharks. Still unsure as to what I was doing, I was quickly and expertly given the biology, behavior and what not to do of shark diving. I went from not wanting to get in the water to jumping in (actually sliding in with no splashing as I was taught) and my fear was quickly gone as I watched 12 Sandbar sharks glide and move amongst us. My heartbeat definitely increased but I was surprised at how comfortable I got, Juan made sure we stayed close and watched for any aggressive behavior, while Ocean kept watch from the boat. At our second stop we swam outside of a shark cage where sharks gather, a Galapagos shark circled but kept it distance. I learned more about sharks in that morning than I have in my whole life and have a new respect for these amazing creatures. Thanks again Ocean and Juan for an unforgettable day! I've LONG wanted to try this trip. I did the cage dive awhile ago with another company and somehow totally missed this open water free dive opportunity... This was SO much more liberating and stimulating than being stuck in a metal cage. In the open water, I didn't get nervous, especially after learning on the short boat trip out about the expected behaviors and situations ahead. It was a powerful and great experience. In hindsight, I'd not waste time with the cage trips as this one is MUCH more natural, educational, and helps support AWESOME and CRITICAL work through out the world. My boyfriend and I went because this was something we always wanted to do - swim with sharks in their domain and get to know more about them! BEST EXPERIENCE EVER!!!! It was so sick!!! I took the Pelagic Dive last Friday, April 22nd and nearly a week later... I have still not been able to take my mind off of this experience and keep thinking about when I can fly back to Hawaii to do it again! This is by far the most magical experience I've ever had. I've dreamt of swimming with sharks since I was little. Everyone & their mother (literally) told me I was crazy but that never deterred me from doing something I knew I was truly meant to do... so needless to say, my expectations were HIGH. Well, I am 100% confident saying my time with One Ocean completely blew my expectations out of the water! We lost count of how many sharks were circling around us but at one point, it may have been upward of 70-100! We dove with Juan, who also took my pictures, and he made the experience even better than I could've imagined. He is so passionate and knowledgable about these majestic creatures. The 30 minute boat ride out into the water will be filled with facts, tips & tricks... if you were at all nervous prior to the dive, I promise you won't be by the time the boat stops. Juan was completely calm in the water the entire time, which made me feel comfortable to dive under and do my thing. I felt completely at ease with all of the sharks circling and not once did I feel even an ounce of fear. I never could've dove in a cage, it just seems to defeat the purpose of what One Ocean is trying to say... yes sharks are powerful and dangerous but they're not man-eating monsters! We booked our trip through Turtle bay resort but in a way got lucky...we were going to book the shark cage tour and one of the guys over heard and asked us " why not just go snorkeling with them?" Totally caught me off guard, but was for sure intrigued. He showed me some of his pictures and showed us a video and I was immediately sold! There were only 4 of us on the boat when we got there plus the Captain and Juan (Juan Shark =)) which was awesome cause we got the photo package and he took some amazing shots of us. The whole experience is pretty eye opening. Its sad how uneducated people are about these beautiful creatures. Juan really changed my whole perception. I was the second person into the water and all I can say was wow! I strongly recommend the 7AM dive. When we first got in there were almost 30 sharks in the water! Wont lie, its very scary but just watching Juan swim around with them really puts you at ease. Took me a while to let go of the rope and finally start swimming around. This is such an amazing experience. how many people can say they have swam with sharks?? haha Its just incredible. Out of all the tours and adventure tours I did in Hawaii.... actually ever This by far has been the most amazing experience. If you're ever in Hawaii you HAVE to do this! Awesome experience, and it wasn't just about free swimming with sharks. You learned about the sharks, and ocean conservation which was really cool.
