Delicious breakfast! It was my first time here and I ordered the big breakfast and subbed regular bacon and sausage for turkey. I also ordered the pancakes. They were plain however the consistency was very fluffy squishy, and I almost thought they were mochi pancakes! I really enjoyed everything! My experience at Effie's yesterday was just ok. The waitress we had didn't seem to be in a great mood. The omelet and scramble plates we had were just ok... I had to ask for the sausage patty I'd ordered. Our meals were nothing special but it's always nice to have someone else make breakfast, so we did still e joy ourselves. My sister in law tells me their pancake is out of this world, so maybe we ordered the wrong thing? Plus the bill was $40 (before tip) for two nothing special (not Benedict, or hash, etc) breakfasts. It was not all bad though. I appreciated so much the "Diner feel" of this place. The menu offered so many different and delicious sounding entrees for all different meal times. I appreciated that breakfast IS available all day, every day. This restaurant has such good reviews, including from my West Hartford family. I'll bet the outside eating area is a super cute area and atmosphere to eat. I will definitely give Effie's another try & think you should not let my review keep you from trying it. This was a very nice experience. Made a reservation for 2:15 and was promptly seated! Lots of open spaces honestly could've walked right in. We went on Mother's Day and it was a super nice day so got t sit outside away from the noise inside which was nice. Our order was taken quickly and I got the Effie's kielbasa omelette and it was very tasty. For $16 it was a steal and super tasty with the caramelized onions. The idea pie was also so good. A nice local diner. They are extremely busy on weekends but they do seem to have just enough parking for the crowd that's inside the place. The menu is quite extensive-- lots of breakfast options (I believe it's served all day), and lunch and dinner options as well. This is a place where everyone is bound to find something they want-- sweet or savory, and served with a smile from the really great front of house staff. Bathrooms were quite clean, which is usually a good indicator of how clean the kitchen is inside. The register to pay unfortunately does get a bit backed up with everyone waiting to close their bill, and blocks the wait staff as they try and maneuver around everyone inside (often calling out "coming through!" about twenty feet away. If you're in the area, it's a great place for a meal. The tab for four of us with drinks (and a shared plate of latkes which apparently they're known for) ran us about $120. read more

I am visiting my brother this week for Christmas and one of my favorite things to do is check out local mom & Pop restaurants or diners. Effie's fits into that mold and we weren't disappointed. Atmosphere: this is a quaint brick building with it's own parking lot. The restaurant itself is not very big but is cozy, not cramped. They have several booths as well as stand alone tables. When you walk in you are greeted by a hostess who seats you and gives you the menus. I checked out the ladies bathroom and it was cute and very clean. The whole restaurant was very clean. No sticky floors with crumbs and food all over. This is just a cute, cozy, laidback place. Service: our server was very nice and dressed festive, in an elf sweater dress. She brought water and then gave us plenty of time to look at the 3 menus she put down. Breakfast menu, lunch and dinner menu and the specials menu. She was very friendly and kept checking on us as we decided what to order. Food: I ordered the Philly Cheesesteak omelet which can with hash browns and toast, my brother ordered the Cobb salad, and my mom ordered a special...loaded baked potato with a cup of soup. The omelet was not too large but a little bland - you will need to add salt and pepper to everything if you order breakfast. My brother's chicken breast on top of his salad was a great size and he enjoyed it with Ranch dressing. My mom's loaded baked potatoes was huge with cheese and scallions and topped with meaty chili, for her cup of soup she got the split pea. Everyone was happy with the portions and the speedy service. We were briefly greeted by our waitress who was already starting to turn away before finishing her sentence. Throughout our experience we were checked in on but again, with emphasis on brevity. She was never rude but did not seem to be that interested in being there. I ordered the tator tot bowl which was served with some pretty over easy eggs as requested. The tots were fresh from the fryer and retained their crisp outside. It was a decent dish but not that filling. My friend ordered a cheese omelette with mushroom and spinach. It looked to be a three egg omelette so it was a good size served with some mashed home fries on the side. My friend had only half of her meal and our waitress cleared our table before asking if we'd like a to-go container. Food was decent, location was convenient but service was poor. Their omelettes are the best I've ever had-- perfect texture, good amount of fillings, nice and cheesy, perfectly cooked. I usually get the veggie omelette and it's delicious!!! I have always had a thing for diners and they're not around as much, so when you find one that still offers good food you gotta go. Pancakes are good but what I been loving is their west coast egg Benedict. All the elements were cooked perfectly and the avocado was nice and fresh. Service is always friendly and quick even with a full house. I used to live near by and most say took it for granted now that I'm a few town over I come more when I was walking distance. Shout out to what I've discovered to be the best corned beef hash. I've been a loyal fan of Olympia Diner on the Berlin Turnpike because of their hash but I realized when ordering the Irish Benedict (with over medium eggs) and requesting that the English muffin be grilled rather than toasted and finally, getting the home fries "well done" that I've got the BEST local breakfast around. Also, we keep having this fantastically salty waitress there who makes our day, every time we visit. I need to remember her name next time. I was waiting in line today (for about 12 minutes) and my name was called. I went up to the supposed manager and she asked if my other party was there. I said that she sent me text saying that she was circling around looking for a spot! I was told that I couldn't be seated until we were both there. I said that I would like to be seated to have a cup of coffee. She refused, insinuated that I had lied about how long I had been waiting and had to seat others. If there were no tables when my friend came in, we would have to start the wait all over again. I explained that I was a senior citizen (76) and would like to be seated. She was rude and condescending! She threatened to call the police( for what I don't know!!! I left and will never go back. I also had lunch there about 2 months ago and the food was terrible! My family of 4 enjoyed our brunch on a Saturday in this family-run place. It's no-nonsense and cozy (not a large amount of space to walk around), and there seemed to be a bit of a wait for some arriving later in the morning. Parking is definitely limited, and it's in the back, as well as along the sides of the building. Our waitress was helpful and friendly, and the food was good. They have a HUGE menu, as well as specials. I can't say we had any complaints. My younger son ordered the Mushroom Swiss (burger), while the rest of us had breakfast dishes. My son ordered his burger medium rare, but it came medium, but he says it was good. The fries he had were steak fries. My older son had a Club Omelet, which came with breakfast potatoes and a choice of white, wheat, or rye toast. My husband and I each had a Big Breakfast platter with eggs, potatoes, 2 sausage, 2 bacon, and a choice of french toast (my choice) or pancakes (my husband's choice, plus the addition of blueberries). We also ordered real maple syrup, which comes in a 1.7 oz little bottle. And although not on the menu per se, we saw that there was a special lox benedict served with latkes; so we asked if we could have an order of latkes, which they did for us.
