If you are from Chicago and you think The Diner is all that, guess again. This place rocks - totally. Tofu Meatball Sub, Quesadillas, everything without the grease and heavy feeling afterwards. The only drawbacks for me: very dark inside which always makes me think of those night clubs that seem awesome at 2 am because they are dark, but head there at 2pm with the lights on and you get scared at how dirty they are. Biggest let down: for a place that plasters on the menu how they serve low fat, high protein good for you food it is a shame that at 10pm they allow smoking at the bar (with no ventilation system). We had to take our stuff to go because one bimbo decided to light up, come on - the cool kids aren't smoking anymore. Their baked goods lacked sweetness - I had the brownie - didn't eat the second or half of the first that I bought for the ride home because it was crumbly and not sweet. Blueberry muffin didn't have the delicious crumby sugary muffin top of crispyness, and the cornbread was a disaster - but I normally shy away from cornbread. The good part is that it's a place I can go where I can order something quickly - I don't have to make it myself. Which is to say, I'd make most of the stuff on the menu better myself, but it's worth going just so I can get it already made. Their food is decent, though overpriced for the quality and quantity. Their tofu scramble is disgusting, but their meatless meatball sub is pretty tolerable. The service is never that great. I feel like since I don't dress like a hipster, I get snubbed more for not being all that "cool". I've been there a few times, but have only gotten decent service once. One World is a place where I go when I want to get food and don't want to make it myself. Having recently given up eating meat, I think I may have found my new favorite restaurant. My friend introduced me to the place after stumbling upon it with his boyfriend. We visited on a Sunday afternoon, sat at the bar, and were served very promptly. I ordered the Philly Cheese steak-less while my friend ordered to eggplant gyro. I've gone to GWC tons of times and made an effort to go there when I'm in baltimore. But yesterday, my dinner was so yuck that I may not go back. I used to get the BBQ burger substitued with a veggie burger. Now the only choice is an impossible burger. I don't eat meat, but I also don't want something that tasts like beef. So that was one issue. I let it go, but when my burger came it was pathetic looking--like, I've had better at burger king. there were approximately 3 carmelized onions on top,1.5 slices of pickle, two huge pieces of tomato, and a scrap of lettuce. There wasn't even much BBQ sauce. And, why should I have to pay $2,00 more to substitute sweet potato fries or tater tots. I'm sure they're not that much more from the supplier. So then, to have the bill be around $14 for an average burger and super garlicy friends made me think I don't need to bother making the trip when I'm back in Baltimore. I liked it better last time. This place used to suck. I've been a vegan now for 11 years and back in the day in west Philadelphia, born and raised on the playground is where I spend most of my days woops sorry there. I asked them for the weakest, most flavorless, most watery beer they had and they gave me some shit that sounded like it was from europe. I have been recently fortifying my patriotism reserves by memorizing the movie "Song of the South" so I gave the beer a try. Thick, syrupy, disgusting. But drinkable. So I had another and then my girlfriend drove us home. I would greatly prefer it if they started recognizing what a fine country it is we lived in and served some coors or bud light though. I go to one world at least once a week for happy hour. Their drink specials are great, good selection of beer on tap, and some good wines. The best part though is their food. I have never been disappointed. As a pescatarian, this place is my mecca. Yes, it says it's vegetarian and vegan, but they also serve fish! Their tuna sandwich is one of the best I've had- get it seared. It's a thick filet of tuna with wasabi mayo. Delicious. Also good- the vege burger, the guacamole, quesadillas (one of their specials was a butternut squash quesadilla that was to die for... their regular one is great as well), great fries... I haven't found something to dislike yet. Oh and the dessert! Their cakes are sooooo good. So far I've had the heaven and hell cake - layers of angel food cake and chocolate cake with rich chocolate frosting - and their german chocolate cake - drool-worthy. I've been here three times now. The first time, I just got an iced coffee drink which was a bit pricey, but still tasted pretty good. It's a bit confusing the first time there because they have a cafe area and they also have a restaurant area with table service. The second time, I ate in the restaurant area and ordered the open portabello sandwich. I believe the menu says you get chips and salsa with sandwiches and salads with wraps, but they gave me a salad for some reason. Overall, it was not a satisfying meal; the mushrooms with tomato slices and the salad with the dressing was WAY too sour/acidic. I would not recommend it! I decided to give the place one more chance, and I went for a third time for dessert. One thing to know is that the vegan cake slices are a LOT larger than the regular cakes (such as the cheesecake). I got the black bottom cheesecake which was just okay. With it being close to $6 per slice, I didn't find it to be worth it (even though their cakes look beautiful). It had a very homemade taste to it, which was okay, but MOST cheesecakes I've had tasted better. I also tried some vegan cake; the cake was pretty dense and the icing was a little too sweet. I really enjoyed my vegan Jambalaya (first time I've ever gotten to eat one), and my non-vegetarian friend, Alex, enjoyed his vegetarian Chili. I've been here twice now and have extremely happy both times. It's conveniently located 1 block from my vegetarian friend's apartment at JHU, so we go there whenever I visit. The fajitas and the nachos are both excellent. My friend get their veggie burgers and loves them too. The food is really filling, which is obviously a plus. My experience with One World Cafe has been mixed. There are times when I enjoy their food and service, and there are other times when both food and service were horrendous. I like the half-price wine special on Tuesdays. I feel like if I don't sit in the seated area, then I get better service (usually by the bartender). The food is nothing to rave about. The eggplant gyro and smoked salmon wrap are good, but I don't care for the rest of the menu (definitely did not like the Thai Tempeh Saute). It is certainly no place to grab dessert there; there are just not many options. My friend has had food poisoning there and really really terrible service there, so overall, I wouldn't go there unless there is a reason to go and I will go with a cautious state-of-mind. read more

In spite of the starrage of my review [3.5 is more accurate], I think it's necessary to go here if you're from Baltimore [meat-eater or otherwise] or vegan/vegetarian from anywhere. I was expecting the worst service ever after reading reviews about this place on the Internet. But it was just regular -- not too bad. Maybe they've improved during the past few months. They weren't offering to shine my shoes or anything, but it didn't take 5 hours to get our food either. Let me be clear with the five stars: One World isn't perfect, but that's okay. I'm a veggie loving omnivore and my partner is vegetarian and we both love the food here. I would describe it as a vegetarian comfort food cafe. Every time I go there is something new and amazing on the specials menu, and I have never left hungry. Their menu has a little bit of everything - including mexican, asian, and american dishes. They also have a great selection of looseleaf teas and desserts. It's also a great place to grab dinner with friends who might normally be suspicious of a vegetarian restaurant. One World is convenient to the Hopkins campus, but not overrun with undergrads (I'm looking at you, Chipotle). My one gripe is that sometimes servers are a little spacey/absent, this is easily solved by speaking up about your needs if they drift in your direction (ie water, check, etc). read more

One World is A-OK. I've only been for dinner and while I appreciate the fact that they have multiple vegan offerings, none of them really entice me so I always end up going with the OWC wrap. Which is delicious but not really enough for me to get excited about. I tried a bite of the vegan Philly Cheese Steak once since people always rave about it but I was still underwhelmed. This could have something to do with the fact that I've never had a real Cheese Steak so I have no basis for comparison but it mostly just tasted like soy sauce and Daiya. I like the layout of the place - the front of the restaurant has a cafe-like atmosphere and is conducive to studying, as they've got some couches as well as small tables. The restaurant is in the back, past the bar. The music isn't too loud, and they've usually got some good tracks on rotation. I like the decor, as well - very eclectic, but not distracting. Like a few others who have reviewed One World, I've had mixed experiences. The service can be hit or miss. They're especially busy on weekends for brunch, so I'd make a reservation and expect slower service. I almost always order the tuna steak sandwich, medium rare, with wasabi mayo on sourdough bread. This is far from a wimpy sandwich, and I've been extremely satisfied every time I've ordered it. Best sandwich I've ever had. Their desserts are worth a look, as well. On Tuesdays, they've got half-priced quesadillas and burritos, and there's a great happy hour that runs all night on Wednesdays. I go here at least once every two weeks (it's also conveniently located right by where I live), and I'm almost always satisfied when I leave. read more

Wow, this place is good! Found the One World Cafe on a yelp search when driving through B'more on a Sunday. Stopped by and was seated by a very pleasant host. A very friendly waitress took our orders which was nachos with vegan chili, burger of the day (quinoa burger), organic peanut butter smoothie, and iced chai. Food arrived quickly and was very delicious. Chili a bit on the spicy side just as I like it. Nachos were very large and layered, SCORE! Quinoa burger was very tasty, as was the smoothie and chai. Finished and got a view of the dessert stand with help from our server. Decided on a slice of vegan apple spice cake. Can you say BOMB? Wow how delicious. We were very pleased to find this hideaway, too bad we are too far for frequent visits. Great service, VERY reasonable prices, and tasty food is what's up. I've never had the food but this is a great watering hole. The staff is lively, the drinks are cheap and plentiful and a lot of fun can be had here once the kitchen is closed. I've been a few times as a friend lives directly across the street making it an ideal place to meet for a quick drink. Place is nothing to look at but has a very nice cozy vibe. There are a decent amount of regulars that give it a homey feel. Staff is there to serve but also to have a good time themselves, they'll laugh and joke and have fun with you. I've eaten here a hundred times, and I generally love the one world. I love the atmosphere, both in the cafe and in the back. Not all of their food is very creative or fantastic. There are other vegetarian restaurants with more surprising choices, and the cooking here is very..sober. Not really bland, just sober. I truly cannot explain it any better, but there is something about the food that is certainly not passionate, but also not boring. It's just straightforward, clean cooking. I love the burritos here even though or because they're a perfect example of this One World cooking style. The nachos are also very good. I have been disappointed by the salad and pasta dishes, but if you find your favorite thing here you'll probably want to come back again and again. The pastries and italian cream sodas are great, by the way, and so are some of their breakfast things. Still, I would recommend coming here for dinner primarily, or for afternoon coffee. I LOVE that this place is open until a reasonable hour. I HATE that at the time I went there (10:00pm) it was indistinguishable from a common dive bar (that happens to have an espresso machine and wifi). I was in there to do some work, but it was so dark, loud, and spastic this was nearly impossible. I have no use for bars, but I need cafes, and the name of the place tricked me into thinking this place was a cafe...it's a terrible cafe (though it may be a decent bar, I don't know). The americano was rather tasty, but too watery. The vegan macaroon I bought was dense and tasteless, i.e., inedible. I didn't try anything else, even though I planned to, because the place wasn't worth staying in for more than an hour. So the bottom line to this is that if it's a real cafe that you're looking for, you're better off at Starbucks than this place...at least at night. I don't know the vibe in the daytime, but in the daytime there are lots of other cafes open. I was hoping this was going to be THE late-night cafe around town, but, alas, it fails. read more

I haven't written any reviews in a while because I decided to go (Vegan/vegetarian) as of Feb 6, 2010. I like to set new goals for myself & have always wanted to go veggie for some time now. Anyway...I figured that this would be a perfect time to do so as the health club memberships are increasing and everyone is getting ready for the summer. It wasn't difficult at all...you commit to something for a good cause and you do it! I dropped some inches (NOT EVERYWHERE) with the new diet and regular visits to the gym. I felt MUCH better and was a regular participant in my bathroom. This however did nothing for my cravings and I still wanted the "good stuff" and the One World Cafe helped me out tremendously! The menu is filled with substitute goodies like baked french fries, meatless ruben sandwiches, real fruit smoothies, cheesesteakless cheesesteak, and the crabless crab soup is awesome. Let's not forget about the vegan lemon & red velvet cake. Food you can pig out on and not feel too guilty when you push away from the table. Lovely atmosphere of course...complete with tables for you to hang out and web browse while you're waiting for your lunch. The perfect place and menu for anyone looking to change your culinary lifestyle. Thumbs up! My "overall" gameplan is to remain vegan/veggie Monday-Friday and "treat myself" on Saturday & Sunday. If it were just a cafe, or a corner bar, it would still be very worthwhile for folks in the neighborhood. That One World is a vegetarian restaurant with a broad and varied menu makes it a standout more broadly. Very friendly service. We have been in with the kids with no problem. Feels like a neighborhood bar should, it just happens to be one where the burgers are meatless. Great spot to stop in for coffee in the morning, a quick bite around lunch, or beers and something more substantial at night. Not a huge beer selection, but always a good variety of interesting selections. The food is tasty and filling, and where dairy is used there are often vegan options. read more
