We were quite taken aback twice this weekend with a restaurant that makes "tastefully off-center" surely the new European caliber hotspot in Farmville, VA. After all, European dinning experience is about innovation and not about turning tables. One19 has innovation completely covered and is all about creativity. It's owner and chef Bill's passion is seen infused in every plate. He takes pride in his product because he understands it. For example, the special this weekend was a succulent fresh beef hamburger blended with chorizo and grilled, topped with bourbon maple syrup and bacon, haloed with a ring of pineapple on a slightly toasted brioche bun with a hint of butter. Sheer culinary genius, and this is coming from someone who borders on and has been a vegetarian. We also enjoyed the BeefX. The flour tortillas came brimming with roasted and pulled moist beef that was topped with chimichurri sauce and queso fresco. And at $9, we felt like we were robbing them! Oh, did I mention the peanut salsa? Yes, peanut salsa! I'm in love! It's definitely off-center and beyond delicious. The desserts were innovative with sweet basil Panna Cotta with a strawberry coulis and a nondairy chocolate pudding which successfully used avocado instead of diary. Brilliant! I washed all the above down with a prickly pear margarita, which was as flavorful as it was beautiful. Everything served at One19 is just stunning, and the service matches the food, only the best will do. No, we don't have any reason to be back in Farmville anytime soon, but because of One19 and the culinary creative artistry of chef Bill, we do now. Last Friday my young sons and I stumble in around 5 after several hours on the High Bridge Trail looking and likely smelling a little worse for wear. I was in need of a margarita but hesitant to take a couple of picky eaters to nice looking place that was clearly not a "kid's restaurant." We were greeted warmly by the owner, told they had several kid friendly items and promptly given a table. The margs were great as were the swordfish tacos. The kids grubbed on French fries, chips and quesadillas that may or may not have even been on the menu. Throughout the meal the owner traded jokes with them and even brought a dessert over they initially turned their noses up at. "I don't like ganache." Of course they destroyed it. One19 would be a great place to visit with friends or on a date night. It's clearly an adult-focused spot, not a "kid's restaurant." However you can tell a lot about a business just by how you're greeted when you walk in. Despite coming in looking a little busted with some grumpy kids in tow, clearly not the target clientele, we were treated wonderfully and had an excellent dinner. I can't wait to visit again. How do I begin this review? From the minute we walked through the front door, the purveyor was privy to our conversation regarding the fact that they served a classic PBR on draft and asked if we were interested in ordering a cold mug! We graciously declined the PBR, ordering a locally-brewed sour cherry cider to share instead. When the drink arrived it was portioned into two equal sized old-fashioned glasses and was a beautiful presentation! After I ordered the gentleman came up and gave me a PBR key chain that I love!!! It was such a thoughtful gesture and I was SO touched!!! We then ordered nachos, ahi tuna salad and fish tacos with cod. The portions were generous and I have to say that it was the MOST flavorful salad that I've had since I was in Europe! The greens were so FRESH that they tasted like they had just been picked! They were all plated beautifully and I can't think of anything that could've been improved upon! The atmosphere inside the restaurant is cozy and fresh and open. The bar is amazing and well-stocked with anything you could desire. The staff is beyond awesome and the place is spotless. From the kitchen to the lavatories, they miss nothing here. The basics were well done, including simple and delicious nachos (I'm not a fan of the piled high and wide version of nachos with 10 ingredients), fresh and tasty guacamole coupled well with what seemed like house made chips. The pulled beef tacos were a nice mix of flavors working together on a good cut of meat to to deliver a satisfying meal. I'd love to see a sampler plate on the menu, but I'm also pretty sure I could have just asked for it. I never heard the word "no" while there. Try the very top shelf tequila. I had an old favorite, and met two new ones that same night. This is the good stuff and even if you don't drink it every day, you deserve it from time to time. After hearing so many good things, I finally was able to come and try out the food and drinks for myself. The atmosphere of this little restaurant is laid back and comfortable. My husband and I had a lovely impromptu meal and everything was absolutely delicious. I was a little surprised that my salmon taco special was more than twice as expensive as my husband's ground beef tacos, but that is the only "complaint" I have. We were very excited to try this place, but sadly the experience was ruined by the service. We came in with a large party and instead of being grateful for our business, an older gentlemen who turned out to be the owner made us feel like we were being an inconvenience to him despite there being plenty of empty tables open. He helped one of the servers wait on our table and it felt like he was just trying to get us out as quick as he could. It was a bit loud, but seems to attract older patrons, i.e., not the college kids who swarm the other restaurants nearby, so not intolerable.
