I wish I would have read the reviews first before depositing my $50.00 to open an account with OneUnited Bank. What a joke... I opened the account a year or so ago and never used the debit card. I just wanted to show support for this "black-owned" bank. I heard the VP on Urban View on SiriusXM and I figured why not -- give it a try. I could have gambled, donated, or even thrown my money away because it's gone. They charged me $10.00 monthly maintenance fees and now I have nothing. The customer service reps take forever to answer and they were not very helpful. This is why many of us do not like to support "black-owned" businesses. What a shame !! I had such high hopes for this bank, as I thought it was progressive, I was very wrong. The website boasts that deposits are available within 2-3 business days. That could not be further from the truth. The pull money from the source, then they hold the funds for up to 2 weeks. I was initially told that after deposits are regulated, the hold time decreases; lies. It has been 5 months, still no improvement. This bank likely profits off of interests from holding funds for unreasonably long periods, and fees. This bank is extremely fee heavy. Based on their "hold" policy, the first month, I was hit with about $400 of fees, despite having deposited several thousands of dollars. They reduced the fees to about half, but I haven't incurred bank fees in at least a decade. On the positive side, the customer service reps are always very friendly as they decline requests to help. I have been with One United Bank for a few years now and I have been really happy until this week. I have several thousand dollars in the bank that I needed wired in order to close for new property. I unfortunately, did not send the right information and it delayed the process 1 day. The next day, which was the closing the funds did not transfer over so I called. I was told that I missed the cut off time and the wire wouldnt go through until the next day. In the morning I called to assure that everything was ok and afterwards they must have emailed me with additional documents to sign and I didnt know that I had to do. I called to see what the hold up was and their response was that I needed to sign and email another document. Of course, I missed the cut off again so the funds can not be sent to the title company. I am extremly upset and hope that I do not lose the property becuase of the lack of communication of One United. read more

I began my journey with OneUnited Bank (OUB) on 12/10/2020 when I filled out the application, funded the checking account ($100), and chose a debit card design. Although the money was transferred immediately from my present bank, it did not show up on OUB's online banking app until 12/18/2020. My debit card did not arrive until 12/25/2020 but still I do not have a PIN to use with it. Nevertheless, I decided I would open a savings account with OUB and after completing the application on 12/29/2020 and funding it with $500 (which again was immediately withdrawn by OUB from my present bank), The application has yet to be processed and my $500 seems to be in limbo as there is no sign of it on the OUB Internet banking app. I mentioned OUB to a friend who pretty much castigated me for being stupid enough to open accounts at OUB. He recommended that I look up OUB at the Better Business Bureau site; I was shocked by the number and nature of the complaints against OUB most of which concerned undisclosed fees. Never-the-less, I have a strong commitment to supporting black owned businesses, until it becomes clear that the business does not have a strong commitment to supporting me in return. In addition to the slow processing of transactions, I have been disappointed with Telephone Customer Support, which I think is badly in need of an infusion of caring and professionalism. I will leave my money in the bank for now but if I begin to see some of the "phantom" fees that were the subject of so many BBB complaints, I will go back to exclusively using the colonizers bank I used before. read more

Let me list the things that I experienced wit this "bank": - Account Fees: I opened with the initial $50 for both Checking & Savings Accounts. I should have known they aren't any different from any other bank with the fees they charge if you don't have a certain minimum balance. They never give you that information though. You have to scour the website for that. - Additional Accounts: So, I added my other bank accounts, credit card and 401K to this account for a 1-stop type of tracking. The alerts I got were good but, when I went to delete these accounts, they do not have anywhere to do that. How can you NOT give me control of MY MONEY???!!! - Website Compromised: I've have gotten emails on 5 different occasions that have alerted me to my information being compromised. (That's why I tried to delete the other accounts I mentioned above) How many times will you be compromised BEFORE a real serious HACK occurs???? - Lack of Transparency: Their website does NOT have ample information on how to delete accounts, information or even on how to close your account(s). This bank is unreal. I opened a secured card back in 2014 with a $1,000 deposit and decided to cancel the card this last May 2023, as it didn't offer rewards, etc and I had better cards. I took them over a month with literally zero communication before I received a check in the mail. I cashed the check and two weeks later it comes back returned (ummm it's from a bank). You would think this would be high priority to them when I called (after calling my bank and confirming it wasn't on their end), and I got the "we'll contact you by end of business". That never happened. You gladly held and cashed my initial check within days and now don't want to give it back? I'm not letting this slide. Biggest red flag when a check from a BANK bounces. I don't have an account with them, but have tried to closed my sons account for almost 2 months. Sent them via fax a copy of power of attorney, then was told 2 weeks later i got a call from a customer rep and was told I would have to apply for a saving account to be added to his account to close the account WHY?? Makes no sense this is what the POA is for. I emailed the customer service rep 2 weeks ago on the 9th and she just replied back to today and said I need to request the account be closed and send a copy of my ID. Again all this info was provided 2 months again. One United Bank you have to do better! For something that should have only took maybe a week or 2 to handle. read more

I've been with them for over 4 years now and overall I've had a positive experience. They never tried to manipulate my transactions in order to collect overdraft fees. I only had to call customer service once and it was pleasant. I have checking, savings, and the Unity visa card. For some reason, my debit card doesn't like Walmart because it's been several occasions where my card was declined and the money was there. So I have to end up using a different card that I have my business checking with. I'm also a little disappointed that every time I try to sign up for Experian boost to help boost my credit score be reporting my rent payments I get a message telling me that OneUnited bank is not on the list of banks in their system. I feel a black-owned bank should know the struggles in the black community have with credit and should be the first bank on that list!. read more

I was able to sign up for an account completely online. It took a day or two but everything went through fine. The $50 I started with was deposited and ready to use. I just held back on the final star bc I'm waiting for my debit card. We have to start banking black. If you're dissatisfied with the customer service or number of locations or technology, realize that they need our deposits to build up! The more money they have, the more they can do but everyone pulls out, you'll never get better. Amazon and Apple started in garages and investors gave them a chance. If you call in, you will more than likely be on hold for AT LEAST 30 minutes then you'll automatically get hung up on and be forced to call back and be on hold for ANOTHER 30 minutes. That is completely unacceptable. Their app is very outdated and cheap looking. I spent a week trying to setup ApplePay and everyone continued to give me the run around as to why it wasn't working on my phone - my Chase account works just fine though so I know they're lying. They also claim that you'll get your direct deposit check 2 days in advanced but thats a lie. Not only did I not get my check 2 days in advanced but I never got it on my payday either! Trying to support Black banks and it has NOT been a good experience. They are EXTREMELY slow with processing applications! It says that the processing time for their secured cards is 2-3 business days. When I called on the 4th business day my card application still hadn't been processed and the security hold that they had on my deposit was credited back to my account. The phone reps are rude when you call and offer no extra explanation. The trash that I spoke with tried to blame it on COVID-19 pandemic which is not acceptable. read more

I would give this bank a negative 5-star if I could. My husband complains every month about this bank regarding a secured card he opted for to build his credit so we can purchase a home. Long story short, they only allow you to make 1 payment per month. In turn, if you need to pay your balance off for a rescore with the credit bureaus to show your score increased to get preapproval for a mortgage - this company will not be in your favor to assist you in doing so. One thing I am is an advocate for what's right. I legitimately researched the company's CEO, COO, and whoever else is at the top of the food chain. They're all on LinkedIn! You can even access their email addresses through Google. My husband reached out asking them to please allow him to pay off his balance. Do you know this so-called "black bank" sent an email stating they only allow 1 payment - even after pleading that we are trying to purchase a home? Stay far away from this bank. Go to Capital One, Credit Unions, and other reputable banks that will help whether you are black or not!
