Not that I've ever been much of a drinker, but over the years, I've found myself hitting the bars less and less often than I used to. In fact, whether it be for a sporting event or just for a night cap with friends, I can't even remember the last time I was at a bar. Not counting the times I'm in Vegas or on vacation, of course. Same goes for happy hours, as well as the random occasions where my coworkers and I just need a drink to commiserate over what's going on at work. Like last week...but yeah! Hardly ever...ha. In all seriousness though, I really don't hit the bars all that much these days. However, on those mildly rare occasions when my friends and I do, we usually end up at places like OneUp - chill, neighborhood bars filled with nearby residents and regulars more so than folks who drove across town to come here. Inside, this place is fairly generic to look at (casual and fairly simple), but it's got a great vibe to it. Along with a handful of tables and high tops up front to post up at (they're surrounded by TV's), there are some pool tables in the back, an old Simpsons arcade machine, and a mish mash collection of board games (crushed my friends at Connect Four). As nice as all of those amenities are though, the best thing about OneUp might just be the bar (and staff) itself. Not so much in the "they have a great cocktail program" sort of way, but rather, they have a solid selection of liquors to choose from. In particular, they've got some interesting whiskey options, which is how I discovered my favorite! Not sure if she still works here, but Crystal hooked it up with a (light) pour of Oban to try and it's now my go-to whiskey. Most importantly though, my wallet loves the prices here; whether you're getting shots, a whiskey neat, or a pint to nurse with friends, nothing here feels even a little pricey for what you get. Throw in a bunch of friendly bartenders and you've got a good time! If there was thing I was far less fond of here, it's that the place can feel a little congested, as the bar area isn't huge and there aren't a lot of tables overall. What's more, on one particular night, the crowd seemed to be a little rowdier than others, which led to us relocating to our usual go-to spot (Yancy's). All in all though, OneUp is a decent spot to catch a game during the week or to meet up with friends. Plus, it's nice that they let you bring in food from nearby restaurants, as they don't have a food menu of their own. A few of us decided to stop by OneUp on the way home. Three of us arrived on Friday, September 14th around 12:30am. We ended up seated along the bar in the back. A few more arrived a little later. They easily joined us as there was plenty of room. I didn't order the round, but we ended up with a Jameson and ginger each. I'm not a big fan of this combination as I'd rather just have the jameson by itself, but it ended up being fine. Once I got used to the sweetness, it got easier to drink. Plus it's alcohol and everyone knows I don't waste. Vibe here is kinda divey, but it's comfortable. Not too crowded which I prefer. And you can hang out and have a conversation. The bartenders were sweet and attentive when needed. I used to come to this neighborhood all the time when I was younger. Not sure when OneUp opened, but it would have been in my rotation if I was aware. Glad I was able to check out this bar. It was definitely a fun night. read more

Been always eyeing this place whenever I get my cup of coffee from Home next door. It only took four years and moving to Washington to get my butt here. For a Friday night, it was packeeeed. The place was filled and there were people everywhere, inside, outside, corners, bathrooms, behind the bar .. OneUp is a cool neighborhood bar so you get your regulars here. I love the fact this isn't some fancy bar which you need to dress up. Ya'll just show up in whatever clothing attire and have yourself a drink. For those wanting a cool IG pic I suggest you order The Rainbow. It takes forever to make, but it's pretty and strong. Then you cap it off with a Trashcan and you're GONEEEEEE. (Trashcan = AMF + hella more alchy) Music was on point, bartender was cool. I like this place. Hence, one of the reasons I do miss SF. read more

Fantastic bar. Bartenders and the manager (Kai) were very welcoming and went out of their way to make sure we enjoyed ourselves. Two pool tables in the back, dartboards on the wall and great music as well. There were also plenty of TVs above the bar. Seems like a great place to spend a football Sunday. read more

I grew up in this bar.... well, not this one, but eagles drift in lounge. The bar that was replaced with this one. At first I hated it. Change always sucks. Now I realized that it's pretty much the same place. The faces have changed , but the spirit is the same. Neighborhood bar, shitty bartenders, lively local characters. This is an update to my previous review. And the main reason for the change is bartenders inability to pour decent drinks. When they opened they had a mixologist on staff - Ashley. With her departure the only thing that one can safely order is either a shot or a beer, and even with beer it was a bit of risk because at some point half their beer always arrived flat. Other negatives are patrons smoking outside in a way that results in smoke flowing into the bar, and volume level when its patently obvious that none of the patrons give a f*&^k about rihanna or her f*&^king yellow diamonds in the sky. Other than that i have no strong feelings about this establishment. And most likely will be back. read more

Great vibes here at OneUp Bar! I came here on a Wednesday evening with a couple of friends. There's only street parking available! There was about 10 people total. The bartender (I have no idea what her name is, but this asian chick) is super friendly and chill! We came here on a random night because it was my friend's birthday, so the bartender was super awesome and understanding about making the drinks strong! ;) But it was a bummer that they ran out of a lot of ingredients for drinks... They didn't have redbull to make an Orange Tic Tac... No Guinness for ICBs... They're not allowed to light any drinks on fire (Flaming Dr. Pepper) which is understandable of it being a safety hazard. But I don't know, I thought coming on a random night that this place would be stocked but maybe they just better prepare their inventory on the weekends. read more

I don't normally review bars but we randomly came across this one while in the neighborhood and I'm pleasantly surprised! A group of us stopped in, was immediately greeted by the bartender. We didn't waste any time and got right to ordering. No, it's not the fanciest of bars but what I like about this place is the character and charm. Definitely your neighborhood bar. The ladies' room was super clean (thank goodness) and from scanning the place, there's a lot of good bar regulars here. There's a pool table, a dart board and an arcade game. Even in the fierce alcoholic competition of SF, OneUp has a genuine divey feel: more intimate than the swarms of people at well-known bars, less costly than the fancy cosmopolitan places, and away from the brouhaha of Downtown (seriously... I feel like I can never hear myself think at Novela even though it's nowhere near a rowdy sports bar). They don't even have a menu, so you must use your cocktail knowledge--how badass divey is that. Dive bar + pool tables + ABG bartender: I don't think I have to write anything more in order to convince guys to check this place out. But ladies, it's worth your time as well! The bartender is very friendly, and the crowd is generally normal people, so there isn't anything too sketchy. Also, for once, bathrooms are decent. We had the whiskey shots ($4 Wednesday special) and Tokyo tea. Deliciously alcoholic and most definitely (almost too) cost-effective. read more

This place has a cool atmosphere. Minus one star for their cocktails tho- I got a lemon drop and it was really sweet and tasted like bad plastic bottle vodka. My boyfriend got a jack and coke and said it was way too strong. I think it's best to stick to beer here. Our bartender was this young Asian girl and she really gave us attitude. First she didn't believe that was him in his ID photo, and then we asked for beers and quarters to play pool and she kind of freaked out saying she only has 2 hands (with attitude). I think it's a great neighborhood sports bar, a bit more elevated than your typical 'dive bar'. Stopped by to catch the last quarter of a Warriors playoff game and it was surprising empty. They have this great deal for a bucket of ten beers for $10 on Tuesdays. The bartender was friendly enough, and the interior of the place is great. Couple of pool tables and a dart board would make this a chill hang out spot. But true kudos for the immaculate women's bathroom. Holy hell, it was huge, granted if you had divided it into two stalls it would be perfect, but I can live with a pristine private bathroom. OneUp redefines the idea of a "dive bar." The interior remodel is a cool concept--corrugated sheet metal, with a new counter placed over the old one. The multiple flat screens and speaker system made Superbowl Sunday a blast. Two pool tables, a dart board, a Simpsons arcade, jukebox, and a table Pacman unit round up the distractions. Service is attentive, with a rotation of friendly faces behind the bar. The drink specials are decent, and every now and then, I've seen extras like snacks and a DJ. The crowd is an electic mix, especially on weekends, and people are generally friendly and chatty. (You don't get the stinkeye you-don't-belong-here look as with some other places.) The one improvement I'd like to see is better bartender familiarity with cocktails--when asking for the classics (old fashioneds, manhattans, etc.), you sometimes get confused stares like you just asked if they want to know what kind of underwear you're wearing. The answer, of course (to paraphase a famous line) is, "The kind of underwear I'm wearing is wet, which is why I'd like to get out of them, and into a dry martini." Nyuck nyuck nyuck. read more

Really friendly, unconceited bartenders and the very casual, clean atmosphere are really good reasons to visit this neighborhood bar. The happy hour specials are also really great. They change every day and they are always strong deals. I want to love this bar (mainly because I live down the street from it), and maybe in the future I will, but currently there is only one thing that I have a complaint about and it has to do with the alcohol (it is a bar...right?). The spirits selection is pretty dive bar like - maybe that's what they are going for? I also ordered a "manhattan" and the bartender appeared to have no idea what I was talking about...later confirmed by the fact that I could see her looking it up on the computer. It was not tasty at all. If we could just have a selection of a couple good spirits (a small selection of nice bourbons, gins, vodkas), it would make such a difference. This doesn't need to be the downtown bar that has every Japanese whiskey ever made but who said that neighborhood bars can't own nice things too? If OneUp could do that, and teach some of the bartenders some run of the mill drinks, this would be one of the best bars in the area. Cheers! read more

This is a great bar that's never too crowded. There's 2 pool tables and juke box. Beers are only $5. $4 for happy hour I think 5pm-10pm . Owner is very nice. I like this place a lot more than eagle drifting lounge ( the previous bar owner), those people were crack heads and now it's seems to be a new hot spot with respectable workers. OneUp Bar is a super chill neighborhood bar in the Sunset. We love the daily happy hour specials, especially the $4 Jameson's and $2 Buds on Mondays! Random events with free food such as pull pork sandwiches, salami, crackers, and cheese are a nice touch. It is a good place to hang out with friends, you get great pours, and it's just a happy place to be at. The venue is large for the area, so you always have space to breathe and enjoy your drink. It does get busy sometimes, especially on the weekends, but the bartenders do a great job of making sure everyone gets their drinks and are having a good time. Definitely, one of my top spots in the Sunset District. read more

This place used to be Eagle Lounge which was around since the time Bashful Bull was still next door. Out with the old and in with the new I guess. OneUp Bar and Home are owned by the same people. I'm very impressed that this hole-in-the-wall bar has a friendly bartender and some chill patrons. I really came here only to play pool ($1 per game). The pool tables are undersized and quite warped, there is little space to shoot from the sides of the table, but I still liked the vibe of the place. No one was pressuring me to buy any drinks, and the jukebox was playing good music the entire time. The biggest draw of this place was the Simpsons arcade game. The 3 of us ended up paying $7 to beat the game, which was the highlight of our time there. Next time we come here, we will definitely try their drinks. read more
