Bar #5. What a day! Brunch, bar hopping, coffee, bar hopping, dinner, and bar hopping again. Yes, I was once again sober after dinner. Fire Fly it is! Another nice little bar around the Outer Sunset Area. Really, San Francisco is not a big city, but it's so beautifully diverse that every district is so close net. Fire Fly was very quiet that evening. Only a few patrons inside drinking while mingling with their friends. One bartender who was really nice, and my friend who knows her made it even nicer. A very cozy place with blue fluorescent lights. Nice jams being played, as it was very relaxing. We ordered whiskey and vodka shots as our choice of drinks. I had a beer and water to stay sober... Sorta. Fine, and a shot too. I really like this place as it was very chilled. Unlike the other places we've gone to during the day, this is still a nice place to hang out after a nice meal or even after a stressful day. This place is a scam. I went there recently, asked for a corona, and a friend I was meeting there ordered a Diet Coke. Once the bartender served the drinks, I handed her my car to pay for my drink. She told me the minimum was 20. I told her I was only getting a beer. She then went ahead and closed me out, charging me $20.67. I was in shock. Not only is 20.67 more than 20, but it's more than twice the price of the beer. She also charged me for my friend's drink, without asking me. When I asked the bartender for this discrepancy, she acted indifferent, and responded she couldn't not do anything about it. read more

In those places, you are competing for attention and only win that game by throwing down a larger tip than the person next to you. I didn't have to do that at Fire Fly. I also didn't feel the need to have to come repeatedly in order to establish myself into a regular. Drinks are priced reasonably, and while they don't have the best selection of top shelf, they do offer snacks and a good selection of mixed drinks. Take advantage of the lychees, folks. What can I say, I'm a 1/4 mile away, and two of my favorite bartenders work here. I'm a sucker. But, when Ning has all her ingredients, she makes one helluva good "Ning Mojito". She crushes fresh strawberries and mint leaves, and uses top shelf alcohol. The bartenders are pretty friendly, talkative, and the prices are fair. You get free snacks with your drinks as well. It's a really small dive bar, but not too shabby. They occasionally have a live DJ mixing for special events. It gets really full due to the size of the bar, but that normally isn't a problem unless my feet get stomped, and drinks start spilling on me. So whenever I get way too drunk here (which happens often), I just walk home! And for the daring, we usually go to ABC which is open at crack head hours. The food usually turns out pretty good because I'm either: smashed, twisted, or on auto-pilot mode. read more

Came out for my cousin's birthday. Pros: Bartenders don't skimp, they do do over pour which is nice. Cheap. They take card. There's billiards. There's an arcade game in the front. (I think my cousin said it doesn't take money.. and he usually plays on it on a normal day for hours.. and I think that's one reason why he likes this bar so much) Great for shots and your basic beers. --- Cons: Usually dead if you're not into that kind of thing. But packed when there's a birthday or occasion. Hence a review that mentioned it's unpredictability. ^So I've been told and it was packed that night with all my cousin's friends. Can be slow or it felt like that while I was waiting, but they'll get to you in order. --- Is it my style of a bar? No. I'm impartial to it. I'd go here again with my cousin/his girlfriend/his friends. I'd go here for quantity and not aesthetics. Definitely a place if i just wanted shots or a beer kind of thing. Their 'shots' are definitely more than a shot. It's become my cousin's favorite bar. He use to avoid it because a cousin who is just two years older has always said bad things (I guess him and his friends have either witnessed or been in a lot of fights here and other things). wanted to chill and hang out with some friends close to home, and my friend wanted to go here. I wanted to check it out also as I have been to all the other bars except here. we were there pretty early (7:30) and it was pretty empty except for some guys who looked like regulars. they pretty much ignore you until you want to order something (we sat at a booth) we were just chatting and my friend's friends came and we went upstairs to a karaoke room...floor? they sang non-stop asian music and we were as loud as we want. i guess it could be fun here. even when I left around 1130, it was fairly empty, they started playing music downstairs though, but i wasn't feeling the area. parking can be hard around here but yay for small cars. read more

Who comes to Noriega for a bar?? Well, my guy friends who are from the city always come here, so me & my girls always meet up w/them here. There's a pool table for those who wanna do more than drink, talk, and listen to the music. My first time here I got a Sex on the Beach & expected it to be fruity like most of the ones I've tried, but it was really strong. So, don't expect the girls behind the bar to stiff you on your drink; they also fill your drinks up to the rim so you definitely get your money's worth..not that I can complain either way because my boys always got me. Being on Noriega....the customers are pretty much all Asian & young, makes me feel right at home..haha It can get hot & packed in there though. Supposedly there's an upstairs where there's more seating, but I've never been there when they've opened it up. Cramped, middle of Sunset dive bar that is jammed packed with Asians on weekends. Thats ok cuz they say....once you go Asian you can't go back right? -_^ Haha...anyways....nice place to hang out if only for the cute bartenders. Very busy and filled with ppl in the evenings and during the weekends. Only 1 pool table near the door which makes it very difficult to play without smacking someone behind you. I've been going to Firefly every weekend or so for the past couple of months since one our friends is a regular there. It is a low key sports bar with a few activities to fill the night such as billiards, dice games, one of those video game things with photo hunt etc, and karaoke up the stairs. My only dislikes is when this place gets crowded and there is nowhere to sit as this is a pretty hole in the wall place (although it is on a corner), but on a typical weekend devoid of pre-holiday days you can always find a nook to sit comfortable. The other dislike is the upstairs is not as managed so people are always hogging the upstairs ... share a-holes! The atmosphere is great for the person looking for a chill place to get a drink and hang out at the bar, or for a few friends to kick it and play 'liar dice' ... I get bored after awhile because a lot of dudes are regular patrons. It's cool that everyone knows each others names and welcome new people and walk out friends. I still don't know any of the bartenders by name but they are always very accommodating and nice :) My drinks are always strong and affordable. They always have beer snacks on hand and the Blue Moon pitchers are decent. It's a little too cramped for me. They do have an upstairs section that can hold another 20 or so comfortably, but you will be away from the crowd which is not bad if it gets busy. I personally don't like standing at a bar where you are always in the way of someone. This place is very narrow and the pool table and dj just take up too much space. This place probably can't hold a big party. A small party for 20 or less would be ideal. There really isn't a dance floor so what gives with the dj and the two guys dancing outside? There must have been over 60 ppl downstairs and the pool table easily took up half the space therefore cramping the rest of the patrons to the other side of the bar. Sorta like in Japan where they are pushing you inside an already packed train. My friend threw his birthday party here this past Friday. There were probably a good 50 to 60 of us but some of them left because it was packed, I was one of them. Tried to order some drinks and this place is just too tough to do. It's like trying to order alcohol at a club. Tried ordering in the middle of the bar and these barflies are assuming they own the space just because they are sitting on a stool. You know how you get some of those patrons that sits at a spot and believes they own a 3 inch personal space around them just because. And........if you were to encroach they would be territorial. Yeah........one of those!!! So we moved. Tried ordering near the front of the bar and the pool players are shoving their sticks to our backs. After drinking the shots, you really can't get comfortable. This is my friends watering hole so I might come back when it's less crowded. I can see how this can be a cool bar if it was less crowded and you can roam around without constantly bumping into someone. Didn't work for me this time but maybe next time. read more

This is actually not a bad place to just hang out, listen to music, play pool at $0.75 per game, and DRINK of course. I think almost everyone in there were Asian except for the two police that walked in. Comfy and big tables, flat screen t.v's, and a DJ. The bartenders there are pretty and friendly. Drinks are average. $10 pitcher or $3 for a pint glass and $10 for a shot of Henny and she didn't skimp either, filled to the top of the rim! Free snacks too.. I like FREE stuff! This use to be a real gem of a dive, Sam Maguire's. A tucked away old school San Francisco tavern hidden from a massive tree on the sidewalk and the lazy Sunset fog. The look on the inside hasn't changed much and is what you'd expect where old school blue collars would drink whiskey and Guinness. However, I'm not sure if old school blue collars would order a mixed drink made from the fermenting lychee jar right on the bar. Lychee vodka shots and grey groose and cran have taken over for Guinness and Whiskey as drinks of choice. All good, I'm easily bribed by their $3 dollar pints and $10 pitchers from 5-8pm. I came here with a huge group of friends, and we left not long after. The bartenders aren't attentive at all, the drinks are made terribly, and the place is so small. For the fellas, the bartenders are hotties and sweet as can be. For everyone, they make some damn tasty drinks. See, I know how to do and order shots. But when it comes to mixed drinks for drinking (not shooting), I know only a few drinks, so I'm so loving that I can ask the bartenders to make me a drink of their choice (minus rum, of course, or my stomach would start rioting), and each one has been damn good. Try it. If you don't like it, I'll drink it. It's small and dark and has one pool table. Plenty of dice and cups for games. All around great bar. For a few drunk seconds, I closed my eyes, and I felt like I was transported back to Hawaii. It definitely has a laid back, chill vibe, and yes there are many Asian people who party here- which is why it reminded me of Hawaii. In all good ways. The bartenders are super sweet, and I'm sure many of the guys go specifically to see the girls who work here. I went on a Saturday night, and the music was really really good. They even played the song I requested (pretty much within 5 minutes)! They also have li hing powder for all you fans of that (me, me, me!). Yummy in tequila shots, and very delicious in vodka. They have plasma screens for sports fans, pool, and some kind of computer game. I am a huge Firefly fan. They also endorsed my friend's softball team last season, and so their trophy (they were the champs this year!) is somewhere in the bar. Love this place. read more

So we stopped by here one random night because we had nothing to do. We got here a bit before the crowd, and there weren't many people at the place. I had two AMFs and a Long Island in about two hours. $22 spent, barely a buzz. What a waste. I also got a counterfeit $10 as change. Although I didn't even realize it until a few days after when I tried to use it at a store. Okay, I don't know if I should write the good or bad first.... I guess I will go with good first, I know the owner personally and he is a great guy. All the bartenders seem to be pretty attentive to what I want to order except for ONE. Overall, it's not bad, but I use to come quite frequently, but decided to stop because I got really pissed off at my service and I'm trying to cut down on drinking. So finishing with the bad. It's all towards the one Thai bartender, Ning. I thought she was cool originally, but I swear there has been at least 8 times where I came on separate different occasions within the past few years and I order my drinks through her and she acknowledges and never gets back to me. So either she completely forgot my order or she is hating. But, that really pissed me off with service, so I try not to come here as much anymore or at all. And of course this happened to me yesterday for a friend's birthday at Firefly. I ordered two beers and never got them, so I had to order from another bartender. Usually I feel out of place at neighborhood bars. I mean, you're walking into a joint full of regulars, there's an established culture there, and you are an outsider. At Fire Fly, though NOBODY may know your name when you first walk in, they sure know it when you stumble out... or fall out like I did with my BFF. The bar owner/manager even helped me up :) The bartender that night was really friendly and knew her drinks-- she was able to suggest a few things for my friends and I. The space is cramped, (drunk people stay away from the cue sticks when theres a game of pool in sesh). The place is low-key, and you genuinely have great moments with strangers who you don't have to try hard to impress. Just be your drunk self. Great bar, great crowd when it gets one. Super nice bartenders! Emily, one of the bartenders, makes really awesome drinks. I didn't really know what I wanted and I just told her that I wanted something sweet and not too strong and she made me something that tasted just the way I like. I came here a few times this year since my friends really like this place. In the beginning I was not a fan but as I came here more often, this place really grew on me. I think people here are friendly in general and usually have a good amount of people. Only thing I don't like about this place is that you need a minimum of $20 before you can use a credit card. read more
