I promised myself I would try to stay away from these types of dive bars. I guess try is a relative term. Then one of my friends got a job at Fire Fly and invited me out so I decided to swing out and visit her. Damn you, C-One, for making me break my promise to myself, but there's nothing like a hot charmer with tattoos to lure you out. I guess that pretty much goes for all the bartenders here. http://static.px.yelp.com/bphoto/8KISXoXMGmLRyx0xFXYwJg/l They're hand picked because they are able to elicit maximum revenue from the hoards of single or horny men that flock to this place with a *dream* of banging a hot bartender. Yep, dream on, suckas. Aside from that, though, the service is where this bar starts to differ. It was my first time here, yet I got great attention and conversations going with the other bar staff and locals, which was unlike the typical Asian dive bars that litter the Sunset and Richmond districts. In those places, you are competing for attention and only win that game by throwing down a larger tip than the person next to you. I didn't have to do that at Fire Fly. I also didn't feel the need to have to come repeatedly in order to establish myself into a regular. Drinks are priced reasonably, and while they don't have the best selection of top shelf, they do offer snacks and a good selection of mixed drinks. Take advantage of the lychees, folks. They actually use them in drinks, and they can miraculously make even the grossest vodka appealing. http://static.px.yelp.com/bphoto/ejBEaEvmDM0rcKpB3TG9pA/l The DJ that evening, Crazy Chan, performed flawless mash ups with old school turn tables and took requests. That makes a very personal and intimate feel. Requests even came right after a song ended. Nice! While this is way off the beaten path for most SF folks, if you ever needed a little place to park in the Sunset, Fire Fly Sports Bar just might be your meal ticket. With plenty of food and parking around the neighborhood, this is a welcome addition to any SF neighborhood.

We needed to put up one of the shades outside (in the boat-shaped seating area, which was very cute) and one of the servers very nicely helped us out with that. I split the ribs with a friend and while I was a little wary of ordering ribs at a Mexican restaurant, my fears were greatly assuaged when I first bit into them. They were tender and smoky, as if they were steamed first and then finished off on the grill. The meat fell off the bone and the flavors were a good balance of sweet, salt and spice. I also got to try a little bit of the watermelon salad, which was ripe, nice and refreshing. Everyone else seemed to enjoy their food too - I was too distracted by the ribs and the good company to ask. The Muni does run directly behind the outdoor seating, so it can be a little loud at times, but it's otherwise in a very quiet neighborhood.

The drinks were good overall. However, the food was disappointing. The beef tacos I had were super oily and lacked flavor. The queso Oaxaqueño/queso fundido was delicious but it felt that there was far too much added oil onto that too. The aguachiles were good but 80% of the plate was chips... Wish the quality of the food matched the price. However, I do want to emphasize that the customer service was great none the less.

From the outside, The Beer Hall almost blended into its surroundings - I almost walked right by if it hadn't been for the neon "The Beer Hall" sign. The taproom is quite spacious and could accommodate several large groups; however, the night of our visit was relatively quiet, perhaps due to the cold weather. Since there weren't any large tables, our group spread out over three smaller tables. As people came and went throughout the evening, it was convenient that we could each order our own beer and food at the bar. I selected an IPA from Fieldwork, a local favorite, and the beer stayed cold and refreshing throughout the evening. The food menu was limited, but I was craving something warm and salty to pair with my beer. For nearly $10, the fries weren't cheap, but the plate was piled high with some of the best fries I've had in a while. They were served piping-hot alongside two dipping sauces - aioli and ketchup. My friends sitting around me couldn't resist them either, and the mountain of fries disappeared in record time. The servers at the bar were very friendly and checked in on our group often. We spent a few hours enjoying our conversation and beer, overall having a fun, laid-back evening.

Staff is a little distracted/disorganized, but they eventually get to you; be patient, you're not coming here for a quick beer. Food is good, tasty and filled with carbs. That's how pub fare is supposed to be, so I mean that in the best of ways. tThe fires are are particularly great, just the right crispy outside and mushy inside. The burger-to-bun ratio was a little off in favor of buns, but flavor was there. Stepping through the door you wouldn't know the place was under new management if you didn't check the name on the door. Same decor, same layout, same everything except the logos/art. It's a nice place to swing by for a good beer. I hope they do well so that they expand the list of taps to a larger selection (they have the infrastructure, just not the kegs).

Do you love double-layered tortillas around your super-meaty tacos? Well, then Underdogs Too is your kinda place! =). A Nick's Way Taco is a taco with a crispy corn tortilla wrapped in a soft corn tortilla with Monterey Jack cheese, pinto beans, pico de gallo & guacamole. I ordered two tacos "Nick's Way" . The first was a regular Pollo taco (grilled chicken) and the other was a Pollo Asado taco (shredded chicken raised by local provider Mary's Chicken). Both tacos came with a lot of pico de Gallo, and a HUGE dollop of Guacamole! After trying both of the tacos back to back, I think I'll go back for the regular Pollo (grilled chicken) version, as I found it more tasty.. PRO TIP: These little tacos are very filling! Next time, I'll just order just one for lunch - that's plenty, unless I was absolutely starving.... I first experienced these tacos when they had a booth at a local street fair, and was happy to happen upon this little corner of 46tj/Taraval way out here on the farthest Avenues in the Outer Sunset. Despite its proximity to the Ocean just a couple of blocks down the street, we visited here on a warm day to again savor this special style of taco. Worth coming back for sure. GETTING HERE: Easy transit access via the L Taraval Light Rail line which stops just across the street. Parking is relatively doable if you are willing to walk a block (worst case).
