So for the food, we got off of the HH menu also. Persian cucumbers. I just ate a bag from Costco, so none for me. But my wife and daughter are both huge persian cucumber fans. I was before my last bag from Costco, lol. Corn Fritters - Fried perfectly. I can eat these all day. Garlic Fries - Perfectly fried. I could have used more garlic though, but it was still good. But then again, I make amazing garlic fries in my air fryer. Ambiance - Love the space, beautiful. 2 floors. Toilets on both floors. Bar, table, and booth seating. Plenty of free street parking. I think it's good for an hour or two. Open 7 days a week from 11:30am or noon until 8pm or 9pm. Service - PM (the name on the receipt); sorry I forgot your name after my second beer, lol. PM was a one man army. Worked at both the bar and ALL the tables. The main reason for the 5 stars. The manager or owner was in the back, but on his lap top the whole time. When my fiancé and I were looking for a cute little dinner moment, we were totally open to an adventure, so naturally I headed to Yelp...And I'm SO glad I found this place! It's not too far from home, and the second we walked in....immaculate vibes. As a plant girlie, all the plants and decor immediately had me! Our waitress was also the absolute sweetest! Hubs and I arrived for a late lunch on a Monday. Plenty of tables open and we were seated quickly. Hubs and I shared the Leek and Artichoke soup. It was a cooler day, so the soup helped to warm us up. We also ordered the Pan Seared Salmon and the Chicken Milanese to share. Although both were good, we both liked the salmon. The skin was crisp and I really liked the artichoke hearts and the sauce on the bottom. I made a reservation for two people on a Wednesday night and we got seated right away. I think mid-week a reservation is not necessary though, could probably just walk in. They have happy hour on M-F from 3:30-5:30pm that we just missed but would like to try some other time. I wish I liked this place more as I been wanting to try for a while. We ordered drinks, pepperoni mushroom pizza, flat iron steak, and calamari. Starting with the calamari, it was nicely breaded and cooked well, though the pieces weren't very meaty. It would have benefited from more seasoning to bring out flavor, especially at the $18 price point. The flat iron steak was ordered medium rare but some pieces looked like it came out closer to medium. It was still enjoyable overall, just not quite at the doneness we expected. The chimichurri leaned more oily than herb-forward, and while the sides were fine, they could have used a bit more flavor. The potatoes had a sweetness which I was not a fan of and confused about. For the pizza, I was expecting a thicker, doughier crust based on what I saw at other tables, but the pepperoni mushroom pizza we received was more of a thin, flatbread-style base. The edges were quite crisp, and it ended up not being what I had in mind. It also took the longest to come out. It honestly reminded me of school lunch pizza which for $21 really disappointing. The dough also lacked flavor and texture threw me off. Definitely least favorite item. I wish they put on the menu that base would be different than the other pizzas. The drinks we got were alright nothing that stood out. The beer that my husband ordered was supposed to have like flavors of papaya and guava, while it smelled like guava it really just tasted like a beer no fruity essence present. My drink was the San Francisco punch and just kinda tasted like pineapple alcohol. I think this used to be Sunset Brewing Company, and I like what they've done with the space. It remains very airy and spacious, as well as surprisingly bright for being in the foggy sunset. We came for lunch and got the roasted cauliflower with romesco sauce, almond slivers, and raisins. It was really nice: the romesco sauce was flavorful and the cauliflower was perfectly roasted. We also got the sausage pizza: the crust was deliciously crispy, and I enjoyed the arugula that went with the sausage. We hosted a great 50th bday party at Fifty Vara for 30 people. Katarina was great to work with. Professional and friendly - all arrangements were made as requested. Really enjoyed our lunch here. The space is big, open, and filled with beautiful house plants. There's also a large bar area with plenty of big TVs to catch a game. The food was excellent. The Caesar salad was simple but well done, and the roasted cauliflower with its spicy tomato-style sauce was delicious. The highlight was the pesto pizza with asparagus and peas. The crust had a perfectly crispy underside, and the pizza was full of flavor. Service was friendly and attentive. It also looks like they have a brewery setup, possibly from the previous brewery. The beer was good, and my daughter's cocktail was also good. The food was bland. The buffalo wings were the spiciest I've ever tried and weren't enjoyable for me, however, my Dad didn't mind the sauce. We ordered a small appetizer that we sent back because the crème sauce had no sodium, and their homemade chips were extremely oily. My Dad had a burger that was just "OK". Think Elena's, but on a random block of Noriega - Gas station and all. We ordered almost everything and the meal was satisfying across the board. The menu likely changes over time, but the appetizers were a hit - Calamari, meatballs, corn fritters, tomato burrata, etc. The pork chop and steaks were done well, and the chicken milanese and burgers were sufficient. The Sunset needs more eateries like this, and I hope it makes it! - Consider leaning into the "restaurant" nature of the business as "Cocktail bars, Brewpubs" presents an overly specific description which hides the gem beneath. Love beer, but good food appeals to a larger daily audience! - Chicken milanese needed something - Not sure what. And the dish was disproportionate to the steak and pork chop entrees. - Pizza also needs something. It's decent, but well short of DAMNFiNE. - Kid's "chicken tenders" ended up being an unsliced breaded chicken cutlet. - The price point is "just right." Overall, I found Fifty Vara enjoyable both times I've been there. It is a beautiful space and pretty big. The bar was mostly empty when I visited and the restaurant wasn't quiet but there wasn't a wait for a table either. Everything on the menu sounded pretty good. I had the Vara burger on one visit which was fine but not very interesting or noteworthy. The menu noted it was "Brandt beef" but tasted like any burger and the meat was not especially flavorful as some burgers can be. Would skip in the future (and I did). The orecchiette had tomato sugo, sausage, broccolli rabe and it was way too salty. I would have thought this would be from the sausage which it wasn't, it seemed like the pasta itself was maybe oversalted (maybe the pasta water) and the other components had quite a bit of salt too which did not help. The one thing on the menu I did really enjoy was the calamari. Nice sized portion, perfectly fried, and nice variety of rings and tentacles. Excellent tartar sauce too. Maybe the move is to skip the mains, not sure. I appreciate the N/A options on the menu but the "free-spirited" cocktail I had was quite frankly not enjoyable and I would definitely skip it in the future. They also have a couple of non alcoholic beers, ones you would find at other local bars too but nice they have the option. Service was quite frankly terrible on my most recent visit. The initial interactions were good but then another staff member took over the bar and pretty much ignored everyone. Empty water glass, clearly done with my meal, and no check in for 20 minutes (at one point I began looking at the clock). As mentioned it was pretty empty and they were not helping anyone else, everyone was equally ignored. I think it was a new employee and the other interactions I had were fine (both at the beginning of that visit and the first time) so not a factor in my review really but it does make me think twice about coming back. Overall, I want to like this spot more than I actually liked it. Most of the food and drinks fell flat on both visits and the overall experience was fine but nothing that would make me rush back. Parking can be pretty tough in the area so be warned if you plan to drive (not impossible but not amazing). read more

The plan to get a quick drink quickly turned into full blown meal that could have easily fed four! Since it was around 7:30 on a weeknight, the place was fairly empty. I didn't realize the restaurant is so spacious. The space looks like a perfect spot to host a private event. Our server was attentive and checked on us regularly throughout our meal. He was kind enough to let us know when the kitchen was closing and asked if we wanted to order anything else. The restaurant closed at 9 p.m. but even after that, he came and asked if we wanted another drink from the bar. The overall experience was a great one. The food was average. This restaurant opened (semi)recently in my neighborhood and it's quite different from the surrounding restaurants, so of course we had to try it! We had been to the brewery that previously occupied the space, so the layout was very similar but they did make some upgrades. The menu was pretty small so there wasn't as huge variety to choose from - we decided to try the pasta and the burger. When the pasta came out, our immediate thought was "this is it?" For $26, the portion size of the pasta was very small, but it tasted fine. The burger was a bit lacking in seasoning - also very expensive for what it was. We were finishing up an afternoon at Ocean Beach and had talked about going to Sunset Reservoir Brewing but were surprised to see it had closed! A quick search for "brewery" led us to Fifty Vara, and at 5pm I called and they said they would have room for 12 of us in the next 30 minutes. How surprised we were when we showed up that this was actually the old location of Sunset Reservoir Brewing! It is still the same big open space, maybe with a slight upgrade in vibe/decor. Upscale casual I would say, but still kid friendly (coloring sheet with kids menu, plastic cups with lids, crayons). There was a surprised 40th birthday in the main upstairs area, and slightly awkwardly we were just 10 feet or so from they group, separated by a corner in the railing, but we could see the whole party and at some points did have to go through the big group to get to the restrooms. Food was good, and I really appreciated that the server actually prompted us in one of her early visits on ordering the kids' food. We hadn't gotten around to even thinking about that yet but realized immediately the wisdom in her suggestion and got those orders in early, thankfully.
