We weren't specifically for the happy hour which a friend has recommended, but we're definitely going to go back for dinner! For those of us who only eat outdoors, there are a few tables outside the bar that are pretty comfortable although it can get windy. From the minute we arrived, we were greeted with friendliness, all of the menus we might need, and an explanation of drinks, beer and wine. We chose to go all out and got a small pizza, their delicious onion dip, meatballs - more on that later - and buffalo wings. I was a bit disappointed that the happy hour wine was a Chardonnay and not the Ferentino that they let me taste, but the replacement house May logger was delicious. My husband had a steam beer, which was also very good. Throughout the service was impeccable, and we actually met the manager, Jon, who had a long conversation with us about the history of the bar and how they were trying to be a neighborhood comfortable place which they certainly have succeeded at. Now for the food - the meatballs were the best I have ever had in San Francisco and I am Italian from New York so that's saying something. We actually let Jon know who told the chef and it turns out the chef is from New Jersey so that makes a lot of sense. The onion dip is something like I've never had before. It's a crème fraîche with scallions I think? And maybe a bit of garlic and housemaid chips. We ate every single bite and actually dipped our pizza crust in the rest of the dip. The margarita pizza was also very good and as I finished it off for lunch today, I can tell you it's just as good the next day. The buffalo wings were what I would call actual buffalo style - I could taste the butter, hot sauce and garlic powder like back in the day on the East Coast. The chicken itself was good, not fatty, and the sauce was just like I want it. They offered ranch and blue cheese dip, which was great. We then had further conversations with almost all the staff who were so welcoming and friendly. We don't live super nearby, but I know we're going to go back to dinner, because I am dying to get their pork chop that looked really good. As soon as I walked in, I was excited about our meal. The ambience is very welcoming. Lots of greenery and high ceilings, combined with a really good open space for tables and the bar. Unfortunately the food and the service did not follow suit. We came on a Saturday during peak lunch hour as a group of about 20. We had a reservation and were seated promptly. They took our orders pretty efficiently and delivered water, but after that, it was all downhill. I won't get into all of the details but a great example of how this place really misses the mark on both the food and the service is the following: A friend of mine ordered soup and it arrived quite late and literally room temperature. She apologetically requested that the server warm it up, and the server returned after a few minutes with another bowl. My friend tasted it and surprisingly it was still room temperature. Resigned to just accept that that was how they serve their soup, she tried to just consume it. But someone else from our table also ordered soup and it was delivered a few minutes later piping hot. So when my friend saw that, she asked the server again to bring warm soup. The servers response was puzzling. She replied with, " oh yeah, we got your soup before we turned the burners on. The other woman at the table got the soup after the burners were turned on." as if that was a valid reason for serving cold soup not once but twice! What was strangest of all was what happened next. After a few minutes, the server brought her bowl of soup back for the third time. And it was piping hot. But in a bizarre turn of events, about half of the soup was gone. So my friend ended up consuming about a quarter serving of her soup hot. I just don't understand what they did with half of the soup when they Eames it up. It was clearly the same bowl because you could see the original waterline of the soup before they warmed it up. Everyone at the table was aghast, but we figured a fourth attempt at asking for an acceptable meal would be futile. Besides this soup mess, the timing of the food was all over the place. Some people had to wait about 30 minutes after others had already started eating. The friend who fortunately got the piping hot soup unfortunately was never given a spoon. She requested a soup spoon twice and had to literally just drink the soup out of the bowl because the spoons were never delivered, Waters were never refilled upon request. My fish sandwich was mostly bread and batter with about a half centimeter of fish meat in the patty. It's really a shame because this place is beautiful and the menu actually looks quite appetizing. But our entire party left feeling unsatiated. I will say that the brussels sprouts were amazing.But unless you're planning to just drink beer and eat Brussels sprouts, I'd find another spot to eat. I wish I liked this place more as I been wanting to try for a while. We ordered drinks, pepperoni mushroom pizza, flat iron steak, and calamari. Starting with the calamari, it was nicely breaded and cooked well, though the pieces weren't very meaty. It would have benefited from more seasoning to bring out flavor, especially at the $18 price point. The flat iron steak was ordered medium rare but some pieces looked like it came out closer to medium. It was still enjoyable overall, just not quite at the doneness we expected. The chimichurri leaned more oily than herb-forward, and while the sides were fine, they could have used a bit more flavor. The potatoes had a sweetness which I was not a fan of and confused about. For the pizza, I was expecting a thicker, doughier crust based on what I saw at other tables, but the pepperoni mushroom pizza we received was more of a thin, flatbread-style base. The edges were quite crisp, and it ended up not being what I had in mind. It also took the longest to come out. It honestly reminded me of school lunch pizza which for $21 really disappointing. The dough also lacked flavor and texture threw me off. Definitely least favorite item. I wish they put on the menu that base would be different than the other pizzas. The drinks we got were alright nothing that stood out. The beer that my husband ordered was supposed to have like flavors of papaya and guava, while it smelled like guava it really just tasted like a beer no fruity essence present. My drink was the San Francisco punch and just kinda tasted like pineapple alcohol. Overall, I found Fifty Vara enjoyable both times I've been there. It is a beautiful space and pretty big. The bar was mostly empty when I visited and the restaurant wasn't quiet but there wasn't a wait for a table either. Everything on the menu sounded pretty good. I had the Vara burger on one visit which was fine but not very interesting or noteworthy. The menu noted it was "Brandt beef" but tasted like any burger and the meat was not especially flavorful as some burgers can be. Would skip in the future (and I did). The orecchiette had tomato sugo, sausage, broccolli rabe and it was way too salty. I would have thought this would be from the sausage which it wasn't, it seemed like the pasta itself was maybe oversalted (maybe the pasta water) and the other components had quite a bit of salt too which did not help. The one thing on the menu I did really enjoy was the calamari. Nice sized portion, perfectly fried, and nice variety of rings and tentacles. Excellent tartar sauce too. Maybe the move is to skip the mains, not sure. I appreciate the N/A options on the menu but the "free-spirited" cocktail I had was quite frankly not enjoyable and I would definitely skip it in the future. They also have a couple of non alcoholic beers, ones you would find at other local bars too but nice they have the option. Service was quite frankly terrible on my most recent visit. The initial interactions were good but then another staff member took over the bar and pretty much ignored everyone. Empty water glass, clearly done with my meal, and no check in for 20 minutes (at one point I began looking at the clock). As mentioned it was pretty empty and they were not helping anyone else, everyone was equally ignored. I think it was a new employee and the other interactions I had were fine (both at the beginning of that visit and the first time) so not a factor in my review really but it does make me think twice about coming back. Overall, I want to like this spot more than I actually liked it. Most of the food and drinks fell flat on both visits and the overall experience was fine but nothing that would make me rush back. Parking can be pretty tough in the area so be warned if you plan to drive (not impossible but not amazing). read more

The buffalo wings were the spiciest I've ever tried and weren't enjoyable for me, however, my Dad didn't mind the sauce. We were finishing up an afternoon at Ocean Beach and had talked about going to Sunset Reservoir Brewing but were surprised to see it had closed! A quick search for "brewery" led us to Fifty Vara, and at 5pm I called and they said they would have room for 12 of us in the next 30 minutes. How surprised we were when we showed up that this was actually the old location of Sunset Reservoir Brewing! It is still the same big open space, maybe with a slight upgrade in vibe/decor. Upscale casual I would say, but still kid friendly (coloring sheet with kids menu, plastic cups with lids, crayons). There was a surprised 40th birthday in the main upstairs area, and slightly awkwardly we were just 10 feet or so from they group, separated by a corner in the railing, but we could see the whole party and at some points did have to go through the big group to get to the restrooms. Food was good, and I really appreciated that the server actually prompted us in one of her early visits on ordering the kids' food. We hadn't gotten around to even thinking about that yet but realized immediately the wisdom in her suggestion and got those orders in early, thankfully. The plan to get a quick drink quickly turned into full blown meal that could have easily fed four! Since it was around 7:30 on a weeknight, the place was fairly empty. He was kind enough to let us know when the kitchen was closing and asked if we wanted to order anything else. We had been to the brewery that previously occupied the space, so the layout was very similar but they did make some upgrades. The menu was pretty small so there wasn't as huge variety to choose from - we decided to try the pasta and the burger. When the pasta came out, our immediate thought was "this is it?" For $26, the portion size of the pasta was very small, but it tasted fine. The burger was a bit lacking in seasoning - also very expensive for what it was. We then shared the winter greens with grilled chicken and avocado, roasted shrimp, and steamed Manila clams. The winter greens were light and fresh, though the grilled chicken was a bit burnt and dry with limited flavor. The shrimp, however, was succulent and delicious. We started off with fried calamari and olives, both of which were standard but good. The heirloom tomato salad with burrata, cucumber, hazelnut, sesame, and vinaigrette was very refreshing and tasty. The chicken burger was ok. Chicken was a bit dry but I enjoyed the light and crunchy batter. The bun was nice and soft/fluffy but I wished there were more greens or pickles to add moisture to the dry chicken. Service was good, and the restaurant provides great spacious atmosphere. The footprint resembled the former occupant, Sunset Brewery. High ceilings with many hanging potted plants. The microbrewery is in the back. It's exciting to see new restaurants open up in SF again and my friend and I ventured out to the Sunset to try Fifty Vara. We shared the grilled asparagus, Kampachi crudo, savoy spinach salad, seared local black cod, grilled pork chop and spiced chocolate cake. The grilled asparagus was excellent - the toasted breadcrumbs and romesco were very tasty on top of really fresh asparagus. The kampanchi was really fresh but this isn't really what I was expecting for a "crudo". The savoy spinach salad was meh - I expected more from the dressing. The local black cod was the highlight of the meal - I absolutely loved that it came with so much greens - snap peas, favas and pea tendrils. The pork chop was cooked well but it was oddly sweet and I was missing a little bit of char. The spiced chocolate cake was good - it reminded me of a lava cake but with interesting spices and texture. On food, this was good but not great. Service was too attentive. I really don't need the server to always be in my face. The pacing of the meal was off too - they brought out all of the dishes in very rapid succession and it's hard to have that many dishes on a small table for two. The space is gorgeous with multi-level seating. They brew their own beers and you can see the brewing equipment on the side. With tax and tip, this was about $85 per person - very reasonable for the meal. Overall, this was not the best experience. Fifty Vara is probably a good neighborhood spot but I don't know that it's worth making the trip out to the Sunset for it. read more

We tried 50 Vara for the first time on a Friday night and enjoyed our experience overall. The service was really great from both the hostess and our server, and the ambiance of the restaurant was chill and neighborhoody with great decor. We ordered the corn fritters, a pork fennel flat bread and a medium rare steak (they were able to easily sub fries for the crispy red potatoes that normally come with the steak). We enjoyed the corn fritters and the flatbread and would order both again, but wouldn't have the steak again as it was more medium to medium well in some spots than overall medium rare. We enjoyed our drinks as well - a refreshing grapefruit vodka cocktail, a Pinot noir for the meat and two half pints of the beer they brew on site. This is a really nice addition to the neighborhood and we'll definitely be back. We may have gotten lucky on parking but we had no issues parking on Noriega just a couple doors down from the restaurant. read more

It was 7:30 on a Saturday night and it was pretty dead inside. There were about three or four other tables in the entire restaurant and a few patrons at the bar. We ordered drinks and they were out of two of the things we ordered. It seems odd to run out of the Pinot Noir you have by the glass and one of your House cocktails by 7:30 on a slow Saturday night. Maybe there was a rush earlier in the evening or maybe brunch was super busy. We ordered several apps and they were out of one of the items we ordered. 2 of the apps never even came out. This was odd and frustrating because it wasn't busy. Hits: The cocktails. Delicious and nicely priced. That, all in of itself, is reason enough to come here. I particularly loved the Paloma. Very refreshing and quite dangerous because it goes down so easy. The Buffalo wings! Sooo good!! This is a basic menu item but done SO well. Don't skip this if you like wings! One of my favorite things that we ordered. Little gem Caesar salad with chicken and avocado added to it. Excellent! Mushroom Flatbread..Yum!! The dough or the bread that this was served on was outstanding! The chew on this tasted more like a ciabatta or a sourdough. It was crispy and creamy and so truly delicious. Love the fontina with the mushrooms. The pan seared salmon, excellent!! Perfectly executed. I typically don't like to eat salmon skin but they cooked it so crispy that I actually didn't mind. The salmon was slightly rare in the middle, but not raw. Perfect! I really didn't like the lentils that it came served with but this is a personal choice. Our server told us that they run into this a lot with the lentils so maybe give your customers another option? Please. Calamari. Crispy, delicate, and tender. Misses: Arancini. It needed cheese or something else in the center or to be served with something acidic. Tasted really dry. Cucumber salad. Just ok. Chicken Milanese was also quite dry. It just needed something else. Cheeseburger was decent, but would've been nice to have more than one option for cheese. There were a lot of other fun things on the menu that sounded terrific, like the chips and dip, seared ahi, orecchiette pasta, and the ginger cake. The bread is so good on the flatbread it would be awesome if you guys decided to add an additional flatbread. Maybe one with a red sauce. Overall, it was a pretty great experience. I was so pleasantly surprised to find a super vibey brewery and Italian Restaurant in my old stomping grounds of the Outer Sunset! My friend and I ordered a couple cocktails, which were tasty yet strong enough to get a good buzz going. (I ordered the mango-pineapple cocktail and it felt like an instant vacation.) I also ordered the pasta which had the perfect chew to it and had great flavor. What I enjoyed most was the beautiful space with high ceilings, lots of greenery, and great touches all around. Because my friend and I came here to catch up and mainly socialize, this spot checked all the right boxes. Servers were also very friendly and speedy, so overall we had a great time here! read more

New restaurant in the old Sunset Brewing Company space on Noriega. Kind of same vibe and food genre, but definitely better in all categories. They got rid of the big barrels and expanded the second floor seating with some fresh and planty decor. They kept the bar area but gave it a nice face lift; still has the big TVs playing whatever sports game. Menu got a great makeover with familiar food but a nice slightly upscale twist. Service and flatware is a little bit more professional. All in all, just a better experience but retains a bit of the warm neighborhood feel. Drinks are yummy, definitely recommend one of the cocktails. For food, the menu isn't large but there's something for everyone. I got the fish entree, which had amazing flavor but was slightly overcooked. Pasta was great, as was the salad. Spiced chocolate cake dessert is pretty good too. Nice place for happy hour, casual Friday date night, or catch up with friends. read more
