    Carnitas FLAUTAS
    Christopher C.

MAN for a nice little hole in the wall type spot do they have a good amount of mezcal and delicious food options! I enjoyed this place because it was only 10 min or so from the SF zoo and it had exactly what I was looking for in Mexican food For appetizers I got the carnitas flautas, which is basically deep fried carnitas rolled in a nice fluffy type tortilla with the perfect crunch topped with pico de gallo lettuce sour cream and cheese. The perfect combination I really enjoyed these i can eat helllaaaaa of these A plain street dog with a side of fries and a very good spicy ketchup again highly recommend that if your into that Shrimp tacos perfectly battered and well seasoned with all the toppings bringing everything together And a Torta de carne asada I really enjoyed these asada it had a nice Smokey flavor too it and perfectly cooked with a fireee a** taste. This was the perfect portion size of food not too heavy and not too light just perfect again with a side of fries. I also tried the michelada. Nothing crazy just alright ..BUT the pineapple Chelada was hellaaaa good I'd recommend that for sure And a Paloma that was again alright nothing crazy but okay. They have a wide variety of mezcal that they get from Mexico. Personally .. I would come back once in a while not an every weekend/other weekend type place, in my opinion it was on the pricey side I paid around 150 and that's fine but my waiter did check in on me at the beginning and one more time after that and that was it. it did get busy while I was eating but even then i don't know about that 6% service fee .. Definitely a place to check out regardless ! 8/10

Having Happy Hour at Sunset Cantina!

Came here during their happy hour where some items were $3 each. The place felt like a cantina in Mexico. Ordered a few tacos and agua frescas. Service was fast, we received our order under 10 minutes. Everything was filling, the drinks were refreshing. Upon reviewing my bill, I noticed an additional 6% upcharge for Employee Benefits, which I don't think was right to pass it on to us customers, on top of tipping them. It may be a small charge, but I don't like being blindsided by additional costs.

What a surprise! I honestly didn't realize this place was here, everyone talks about the pizza place or the sushi place. We ordered take out since the kids weren't feeling well. The machete - which was like a quesadilla was delicioussss, loaded and full of flavor, we got it with shrimp. very tasty. al pastor tacos - small, but done right! juicy, tasty, the pineapples were yummy. crunchy tacos - fancy taco bell but also yummy with their spicy sauce! hamberguesa - this was okay. a little dry compared to everything else. queso fundido - probably would have been tastier with just chips, but my husband got the chicharrones. overall we think the highlights were worth getting again and maybe even better than our local spot that's closer! will definitely be back again.

Loved Sunset Cantina!! The tacos were just amazing and I've never had tacos like this before. A lot of the times the veggie tacos are just boring but not at Sunset Cantina!! I've always wanted to try birria but as a vegetarian, I've never got to. The mushroom birria tacos were just amazing! But personally, the star of the show was the avocado tacos!! They were perfectly crispy and jam packed with flavor. Would come all the way to sunset just for these tacos!!

Wow , you MUST come by here for their tacos . The flavor combination wrapped inside their house made day-of tacos will blow your idea of what a taco can be into a whole new dimension. We started with their queso fundido, which is thick white cheese topped with chorizo and bits of other yumminess and legit corn chips. Next came the kale and squash winter salad, with the kale chopped fine, mixed with a thick dressing and avocado chunks (amazing). The mouth feel and flavor of this salad lit me up. I hear their margaritas are freaking delicious too. And what tops it all off is the ambiance, rated -- come and check it out, bring a friend or your crew and get ready to enjoy. Oh and Kayla our server was helpful and awesome, checking in on us and keeping our waters full the whole time.

First time here. We were looking for a place to eat near Lands End and Yelp lead us here. We walked in and we were seated immediately, no wait thankfully. Inside is decorated nicely and there is a lot of seating as well as outdoor seating and a full bar that also has seating at the bar. There is a HUGE TV playing sports, no volume. Nice full bar with a variety of tequilas and other liquor Employees are courteous and nice. We started off with Chips, Salsa and Guacamole $14 Salsa is good, nice flavor, chips are good also nice and crispy I ordered a Margarita $12 Drink was good Friend got a ginger beer $4 Friend ordered Baja Shrimp tacos $16.00 He said he really liked the tacos, said the fish was nicely battered and fried I got the quesabirria tacos $16 The quesabirria tacos were mediocre, meat had no flavor and the consome was the same no flavor so I added the salsa from the chips on my tacos lol Over all this was a cool spot to have lunch at Ambiance is nice, location is near Ocean Beach and Lands End Street parking only. We parked in a residential area and walked to the restaurant

I have never had such beautiful Mexican food that tasted so bad. The vibes were perfect. The World Series on every screen, Cinco de Mayo decorations everywhere, even a guy setting tacos on fire and handing them out like some kind of showpiece. None of it ever made it to our table. And the plates looked incredible, which almost made it worse. It was painfully disappointing. All presentation, zero flavor.

Great food, great vibes. Sunset Cantina is so festive once you step inside with decorations all over and glittering Christmas lights in the bathroom hallway. The servers were attentive and ours checked up on us every so often to get our orders or bring us extra napkins. Al pastor tacos were our favorite, the perfect bite to start off the meal. Quesabirria tacos were large and filling and the Baja shrimp tacos were perfectly battered and tangy. The sauce provided on the side was a bit spicy so we opted to not use it. I was stuffed at the end of the night and definitely will come back to try other items on the menu! Right along Judah so parking can be a bit harder to find but great neighborhood to take a stroll after to walk off the food!

First time at Sunset Cantina. We arrived right around opening at 11am, walked in and there was no one in the restaurant which was nice. We had our one year with us and the waitress was super kind and welcoming when we walked in. What we ordered: Surf Trip Salad: I wanted something light for lunch so I ordered this salad. Instead of chicken, I actually got steak and it was delicious! So much flavor and lots of toppings from avocado, bacon, red onions, corn etc. The downside was most of my avocados that was on my plate was unfortunately bruised. Overall still delicious. Hamburguesa: My husband ordered this burger and he fairly enjoyed it and I had a bite of it as well. The habanero mayo sauce was super flavorful and it went well with the burger. Cheese quesadilla: We had a small portion made for our daughter for this. It was actually pretty big size. Super simple cheese and quesadilla. I wish we added protein on this but we forgot and that's okay. Churros: We just wanted to try this out as a dessert. It was okay, nothing out of the ordinary. I wish there was more sauces other than maple syrup & whip cream. Overall, we enjoyed our meal and service was great.

    Carne asada tacos
    Caly T.

Taco Tuesday deal is $2 off their platter sets. Relaxed interior and manageable menu to decide on. - chips with guac and salsa: small guac portion and chips are tiny bit stale - carne asada tacos: meat was tender enough but flavor was a bit off. Needed a salsa of sorts

    Avocado tacos

Came to Sunset Cantina after a long day in Ocean Beach. We started with chips and guacamole. The dips were tasty, but unfortunately, the chips were a bit stale. For our mains, I wasn't too impressed overall. The food didn't strike me as very authentic and leaned on the salty side. My family member had the crispy carnitas tacos, which came as three street-style tacos. The carnitas were indeed crispy, but the flavor felt off. My partner ordered the avocado tacos and really enjoyed them--three tacos with fried avocado slices and plenty of pickled onions. I went with the pozole, which came out piping hot and in a generous portion, but I wasn't thrilled with the taste. It had too much cumin and salt for my liking, and reminded me more of a thin chili than pozole. If you're looking for a casual spot with a less traditional take on Mexican food, you might enjoy it here, but for authentic flavors, I'd probably look elsewhere. The service was great and friendly.

    Ribs, damn delicious!

Went to Sunset Cantina over the holiday break and I was pleasantly surprised! We had a craving for Mexican so someone in the fam found this place on TikTok or IG. I used to live 3 blocks from this place, so it is in a familiar, very quiet residential neighborhood in the Sunset. Not expecting much, we ordered the queso fundido (chips with Oaxacan cheese / white cheddar), costillas (guava glazed dry fried ribs), birria tacos, machete (giant quesadilla with jack cheese, poblanos and chicken). By far, the costillas were THE BOMB! The meat was tender, fell off the bone and the sweet guava glaze was addicting! I would come back here and just order 5 plates of the costillas and some beer, ALL FOR MYSELF! They were that good and outclasses the ribs I've had at a number of BBQ joints in the Bay Area. The queso fundido was also good and a nice compliment to the ribs as an appetizer. Nice cheese pull with crispy chips. The birria tacos are what you would expect from a good Mexican place. Tender, well seasoned beef wrapped in a cripsy taco shell, with a tangy birria dip. The machete was basically a huge quesadilla. It was good, but not a stand out like the ribs, queso and birria tacos. I would come back for those three things for sure. Glad we found this place and will definitely be on our go to list for Mexican. But those ribs, boy, still thinking about them now . . .

Kale & Winter Squash Salad with extra squash and extra cotija
    Matt J.

I'm getting a little crazy with the review updates for Sunset Cantina but I am doing one more to bump them up to five stars. Not only has the waitstaff been exceedingly friendly each visit, but they have even memorized my high-maintenance order of the kale salad without bacon and avocado and with extra squash and cotija. These modifications make it one of my favorite dishes in the city and a vegetarian's dream. They are so welcoming and accommodating and we are so happy that it's a new regular in our rotation.

There is a nice selection off the main menu for Happy Hour 4-6pm. Providing an opportunity to sample one or more of the menu items as an appetizer. I chose the mussels with garlic bread, as good ones are not found easily. The portion was quite ample, and the sauce I dipped my nice crunchy garlic bread in was very flavorful, warm and delicious. I also tried the plantains which were cooked perfectly; not too mushy with a perfect char, and the sweet onions on top were also tasty. Paired with a very tangy dipping sauce. All the flavors came together well. My husband ordered the Cantina burger which he enjoyed down to the last bite. Our daughter also sampled off the smaller menu with Lomo Empanadas and the Chicharron de Pollo which she reported were both very nicely prepared. Will, our server gave us excellent recommendations which we availed ourselves of. The bill for 4 items plus the burger, a side of rice, and a ginger beer came to just under seventy dollars, which was a reasonable price. I would definitely give the food five stars, and the restaurant four as it's a long and lengthy bar with a few tables for two. The majority of the seating is in the back with two flat screens and an open kitchen. I can imagine how loud this place can get. We went at the perfect time: not a lot of customers so we received excellent individualized service from Will. I would hope to be able to return next time we visit GG Park and sample some more menu items like the Peruvian Paella which sounded very promising.

For those of us who only eat outdoors, there are a few tables outside the bar that are pretty comfortable although it can get windy. From the minute we arrived, we were greeted with friendliness, all of the menus we might need, and an explanation of drinks, beer and wine. We chose to go all out and got a small pizza, their delicious onion dip, meatballs - more on that later - and buffalo wings. I was a bit disappointed that the happy hour wine was a Chardonnay and not the Ferentino that they let me taste, but the replacement house May logger was delicious. My husband had a steam beer, which was also very good. Throughout the service was impeccable, and we actually met the manager, Jon, who had a long conversation with us about the history of the bar and how they were trying to be a neighborhood comfortable place which they certainly have succeeded at. Now for the food - the meatballs were the best I have ever had in San Francisco and I am Italian from New York so that's saying something. We actually let Jon know who told the chef and it turns out the chef is from New Jersey so that makes a lot of sense. The onion dip is something like I've never had before. It's a crème fraîche with scallions I think? And maybe a bit of garlic and housemaid chips. We ate every single bite and actually dipped our pizza crust in the rest of the dip. The margarita pizza was also very good and as I finished it off for lunch today, I can tell you it's just as good the next day. The buffalo wings were what I would call actual buffalo style - I could taste the butter, hot sauce and garlic powder like back in the day on the East Coast. The chicken itself was good, not fatty, and the sauce was just like I want it. They offered ranch and blue cheese dip, which was great. We then had further conversations with almost all the staff who were so welcoming and friendly. We don't live super nearby, but I know we're going to go back to dinner, because I am dying to get their pork chop that looked really good. They also came and helped us put the stuff in boxes and explained the best way to take pizza home, which I never knew before. I can't wait to go back again

Once the back patio cleared out we moved our party outside because I will be taking up space for an event I booked, Especially when the bar is aware that there are more attendees arriving, The space was still open for the general public to come chill and several of the general guests did, they kicked it with us ate, drank and celebrated with us and left. After which a group of males entered and they weren't an issue until one of them grabbed the pizza I bought without asking. After his third slice I asked him why he felt entitled to take someone else's food without even requesting, which aggravated his entire group. this escalated matters, as my friends are not going to watch me get yelled at. When the bar staff was alerted they tried their absolute worst to de-escalate the situation. They suggested giving me $20 for the pizza they stole, but they failed to see the point. The reason I am putting my review back up again is because my friends have videos of one of the bar staff wearing a beanie at the time standing next to the man who was yelling "IM PROUD TO BE WHITE" with his finger pointing very aggressively at me. In my last review I stated that all of my friends were POC and the opposite party was white, to which Sawyer then asked me to take down the review because it was not a "fair representation of what took place", However I documented what took place and how we were treated and thats what my review stated I do appreciate Sawyer for refunding me, but I will not be silenced with how myself and my friends were treated regardless of the refund I received, Temple allows Racism in my beautiful neighborhood and I will not stand for it. I can also add proof if and when Temple bar would like to respond. Shoutout to SFPD for actually de-escalating the situation. Best, SB

We told him that since it's our anniversary that we will go all the way and order the Phozilla!!! We also ordered peach green tea lemonade. As we waited, one of the server handed us a Lychee Coconut Freeze, a complimentary drink to help celebrate our anniversary. That was really sweet of them. This drink tastes like a dessert. Yummy!!! Wow, when our Phozilla came, it is huge! The lobster, beef rib, bone marrow, filet mignon and brisket was beautifully arranged in this big round bowl. Bowl is big enough to feed 4 people. We started with filling our bowl with the soup and noodle. The beef broth was flavorful with the green onions and cilantro. Next the rib was full of meat and tender. The lobster was cooked perfectly, sweet and delicious. Then dip made with butter and sweet chili elevated your taste buds. The bone marrow was savory and velvety in texture. The filet mignon melt in your mouth and the brisket was tasty and tender. It was a lot, but we devoured all the stuffings except the noodles. We had a lot of noodles left. It was just too much noodle for 2 people. Overall this was the ultimate meal. We loved it and enjoyed our dinner. The lychee at the end cleansed our palette and we left the place satisfied. This is our second time and we will be back!
