My husband's is the carne plate, and my son is obsessed with the elote. Price is right. Food tastes great. And fresh! Delivery is legit as far as taste and packaging goes too! The chips + dip and drinks are bomd and you can count on left overs, as the portions are good for your buck! But if you eat it all, that's fine too because you don't feel like shit after eating. I respect it. And it's one of our go to's where we don't feel like shit eating it and we don't feel like shit paying for it. Long overdue but no joke, the place took me completely by surprise. I went to Ocean Beach, and wanted to grab a bite to eat somewhere to close to the beach. I had my dog with me so yes, this place is dog friendly. The menu isn't too long but honestly, I didn't see a whole lot of options that were worth my money. Like a taco here runs you $5 each (I think I saw three going for $15-ish) Anyways, I order a Machete with chicken and my partner ordered the carnitas torta. Honestly, the machete was absolutely delicious! It's essentially a giant stuffed quesadilla but it had these bell peppers, and grilled onions that were terrific and the chicken was well seasoned. So freaking good, and I do appreciate the spinach wrap tortilla. It gives it a little and ya know, fiber for ya diet lol I got a bite of the carnitas torta and I will say, it tasted a lot to me like a torta de lomo but lomo were my childhood fav tortas growing up, so yes, I really liked the carnitas torta. The tortas come with a side of fries btw. The only one downside about this place is the portion sizes are tiny for what they are charging. I ordered Al Pastor Tacos & Costillas Everything was decent but the prices are pretty steep. I would definitely come here and take advantage of their happy hour next time. Unfortunately, you can't choose different proteins for your tacos so you could at least try different ones unless it's happy hour. The order comes in a set of three per protein. Al Pastor Tacos 3.8/5 The pineapple on it is delicious and sweet but because there's less protein or maybe a lack of flavor the pineapple flavor took over. The tortilla is lovely. I wished they had stacked the tacos more because of the pricing. Salsa is also good. Costillas 3.8/5 The sauce is sweet and nice with the touch of guava. The ribs do fall apart and are tender but because it is fried the outside layer can be really tough and unpleasant. The slaw was a nice side to help manage the heaviness. Service 4/5 Staff is very friendly and straight to the point with my order. Just fyi they do add a 6% service fee to the bill and it's on the bottom of the menu page in case you missed it. Ambience It's a pretty dope spot with the decoration and the island vibe to it. Love the reggae playlist they had on. A huge group of us dropped into Sunset Cantina on a Monday afternoon after hiking Land's End. It was otherwise not that busy, so service was prompt and efficient. We needed to put up one of the shades outside (in the boat-shaped seating area, which was very cute) and one of the servers very nicely helped us out with that. I split the ribs with a friend and while I was a little wary of ordering ribs at a Mexican restaurant, my fears were greatly assuaged when I first bit into them. They were tender and smoky, as if they were steamed first and then finished off on the grill. The meat fell off the bone and the flavors were a good balance of sweet, salt and spice. I also got to try a little bit of the watermelon salad, which was ripe, nice and refreshing. Everyone else seemed to enjoy their food too - I was too distracted by the ribs and the good company to ask. Came here during their happy hour where some items were $3 each. The place felt like a cantina in Mexico. Ordered a few tacos and agua frescas. Service was fast, we received our order under 10 minutes. Everything was filling, the drinks were refreshing. Upon reviewing my bill, I noticed an additional 6% upcharge for Employee Benefits, which I don't think was right to pass it on to us customers, on top of tipping them. What a surprise! I honestly didn't realize this place was here, everyone talks about the pizza place or the sushi place. We ordered take out since the kids weren't feeling well. Great food, great vibes. Sunset Cantina is so festive once you step inside with decorations all over and glittering Christmas lights in the bathroom hallway. The servers were attentive and ours checked up on us every so often to get our orders or bring us extra napkins. Al pastor tacos were our favorite, the perfect bite to start off the meal. First time at Sunset Cantina. We arrived right around opening at 11am, walked in and there was no one in the restaurant which was nice. We had our one year with us and the waitress was super kind and welcoming when we walked in. What we ordered: Surf Trip Salad: I wanted something light for lunch so I ordered this salad. Instead of chicken, I actually got steak and it was delicious! So much flavor and lots of toppings from avocado, bacon, red onions, corn etc. The downside was most of my avocados that was on my plate was unfortunately bruised. Overall still delicious. Hamburguesa: My husband ordered this burger and he fairly enjoyed it and I had a bite of it as well. The habanero mayo sauce was super flavorful and it went well with the burger. Cheese quesadilla: We had a small portion made for our daughter for this. It was actually pretty big size. Super simple cheese and quesadilla. I wish we added protein on this but we forgot and that's okay. Churros: We just wanted to try this out as a dessert. It was okay, nothing out of the ordinary. My family member had the crispy carnitas tacos, which came as three street-style tacos. The carnitas were indeed crispy, but the flavor felt off. My partner ordered the avocado tacos and really enjoyed them--three tacos with fried avocado slices and plenty of pickled onions. I went with the pozole, which came out piping hot and in a generous portion, but I wasn't thrilled with the taste. It had too much cumin and salt for my liking, and reminded me more of a thin chili than pozole. Wow , you MUST come by here for their tacos . The flavor combination wrapped inside their house made day-of tacos will blow your idea of what a taco can be into a whole new dimension. We started with their queso fundido, which is thick white cheese topped with chorizo and bits of other yumminess and legit corn chips. Next came the kale and squash winter salad, with the kale chopped fine, mixed with a thick dressing and avocado chunks (amazing). The mouth feel and flavor of this salad lit me up. Not only has the waitstaff been exceedingly friendly each visit, but they have even memorized my high-maintenance order of the kale salad without bacon and avocado and with extra squash and cotija. And although we don't usually do Jell-O shots anymore, we find it difficult to turn down Passionfruit Jell-O shots here. The food offerings aren't five stars like their drink options, nor is it traditional Mexican fare, but there are some winners. Baja Shrimp Tacos have large, firm shrimp with a tasty, light batter. Carnitas Flautas are a hearty appetizer, perfect for sharing. Summer Melon Salad sprinkles an addictive tajin (& what appears to be chamoy?) sauce over watermelon, queso fresco, & cucumbers. On our wouldn't order again list are their Street Dog & Surf Trip Salad. Went to Sunset Cantina over the holiday break and I was pleasantly surprised! We had a craving for Mexican so someone in the fam found this place on TikTok or IG. I used to live 3 blocks from this place, so it is in a familiar, very quiet residential neighborhood in the Sunset. Not expecting much, we ordered the queso fundido (chips with Oaxacan cheese / white cheddar), costillas (guava glazed dry fried ribs), birria tacos, machete (giant quesadilla with jack cheese, poblanos and chicken). By far, the costillas were THE BOMB! The meat was tender, fell off the bone and the sweet guava glaze was addicting! I would come back here and just order 5 plates of the costillas and some beer, ALL FOR MYSELF! They were that good and outclasses the ribs I've had at a number of BBQ joints in the Bay Area. The queso fundido was also good and a nice compliment to the ribs as an appetizer. Nice cheese pull with crispy chips. The birria tacos are what you would expect from a good Mexican place. Tender, well seasoned beef wrapped in a cripsy taco shell, with a tangy birria dip. The machete was basically a huge quesadilla. It was good, but not a stand out like the ribs, queso and birria tacos. I would come back for those three things for sure. Wow I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of these tacos!! We came on a Saturday afternoon on a warm day in sf and it was absolutely packed. People were ordering drinks and didn't even have a place to put them because there were no tables. The first time I came here, I was immediately digging Sunset Cantina's vibes as soon as we started to settle into our seats. The colorful decor, the surf themed elements, the laid back vibes...they all felt very fitting for the Outer Sunset. As for the menu, it may not seem super extensive, but it's got a wide variety of Mexican street food to choose from, ranging from your typical tacos (including quesabirria!), enchiladas, and platters to treats like elote, aguachiles, and tortas! Plus, they've got a great looking brunch menu and an enticing list of aguas fresca, cocktails, and margaritas, too! -- PINEAPPLE AGUA FRESCAS...$6 While I wish the taste of the pineapple had been stronger (I LOVE pineapples), this was pretty good nonetheless. Not only did it just go well with the food, but it was super refreshing and not overly sweet either! -- CARNITAS FLAUTAS - Flour Tortilla, Carnitas, Corn, Jack Cheese, Poblanos, Cilantro-Lime Slaw, Chipotle & Avocado Crema, Cotija...$17 I love me some tasty flautas and boy were these were some tasty flautas! I liked that the wings had a slight crispiness to them and that the wings weren't slathered in sauce. -- BAJA SHRIMP TACOS - Beer Battered Shrimp, Avocado & Chipotle Crema, Pickled Onions, Shredded Cabbage...$16 We were pretty bummed we didn't see fish tacos on the menu, but, thankfully, this was a fine alternative. The pieces of shrimp was surprisingly big, the batter wasn't very thick, and I liked how well the cremas complemented everything. -- CRUNCHY TACOS (3) - Grass-fed Ground Beef, Shredded Lettuce, Onions, Radish, and Cilantro in a Crispy Tortilla Shell...$15 Ehh...not bad, but nothing special. While my friend didn't care for how airy the shells were, my bigger issue was with how it felt like they could've been filled more. A real shame too, as I thought the taste of these was pretty decent. -- QUESABIRRIA (2) - Braised Beef, Oaxaca Cheese, Pickled Onions, Cilantro, Consome...$16 This was so good! Unlike the crunchy tacos, these felt like they were so packed and I loved how crispy the shells were. The beef, cheese, and onions worked so well together, you don't need the consome (though, it adds a ton of flavor, too). -- CRISPY CARNITAS - Crispy Braised Pork, Onions, Cilantro, Salsa Verde, Pickled Onions...$14 Kind of standard, but not too shabby. Each taco had a fair amount of carnitas, which were cooked well (crusty edges yet not dry) and well seasoned. I kind of wonder if we should've gone with Al Pastor instead, if only for something more unique. -- ELOTE - Street-style Grilled Corn, Cotija, Lime, Garlic-Chili Aioli...$12 Sadly, one of the dishes I was most excited for was just okay. The corn itself was sweet and fresh with a decent char, but I wish it had more of the aioli on it (felt more like seasoned, grilled corn). On the whole, just about everything we had was great and service across each of my visits was fine (nothing specifically great, but efficient and friendly). That being said, some dishes didn't feel quite as worth it as others did. Despite how they're more expensive, I'd rather pay the few extra bucks for their quesabirria and flautas over the carnitas and crunchy tacos. Clearly, not because I thought the latter were bad; I just thought the former were far more impressive. Crazy enough, even though I've tried a bunch of things here, there are still a number of dishes I want to try. In particular, I definitely want to come back to check out their brunch menu (it's no longer offered on Fridays), but even some of their other option on their lunch/dinner menu, too. The 2 stars are for the servers that we had who are accommodating and super friendly but that was all that was good about that. The best margs in the city next to Tacolicious. Truly like the best - I LIVE for the guava marg. Such a cute spot to grab a marg and chips after the beach or before a res at Damn Fine!
