    Cuttlefish and blackink pasta
    Janet S.

It is a local quaint restaurant recommended by our bed and breakfast. It was a great meal. I had spaghetti and clams, my daughters had pesto and shrimp and the other cuttlefish and black ink pasta. We had the calamari. The pasta dishes were delicious. The calamari was a little too much breading and light on the calamari for us. We were not offered fresh cheese for the pasta and the Greca salad we ordered was never provided otherwise we would have given a higher rating. The bottle of local rose' wine was delicious. I would go back if in the area.

    Cute placemats, complete with recipes.

Very nice place for a homey meal in a quieter part of Venice. The room is small, cozy and quaint--we were lucky to get a table at 8pm, I think because it was an unexpectedly cold and rainy evening, keeping more people inside. Menu has a nice selection of Venetian classics and a few interesting options I haven't seen so often. We weren't ravenously hungry, so we shared a mixed seafood antipasti to start. This was very, very good--the octopus especially, which was perfectly tender, and the seppia in ink were the standouts. I had the black spaghetti with octopus, tomato and olives, which was a pretty generous portion and had a lovely, almost sweet, tomato-flavor to it. My sweetie had the Vitello Tonnato (which the waitress had to make sure he'd be ok with since it is served cold) and that was delicious, too. We shared a nice caramel creme for dessert and enjoyed lingering here for a while. Service was pleasant, not rushed and friendly. In fact our waiter apologized profusely after accidentally knocking over a (nearly empty) wine glass near the end of the meal, and replaced our almost gone bottle with a nearly full one to make up for it! I would definitely recommend travelers check Oniga out.

Recommended by a local, this was our favorite meal this time in Italy! Oniga is a super cute and cozy restaurant hidden away in the maze of Venice. Inside were many other Italians so that was a good sign immediately. The bufala caprese salad was fantastic with a little spoon of fresh pesto that was divine. Next we had pasta dishes. The gnocchi was big and the texture fluffy and magical. The spaghetti con le vongole had more clams than pasta in a brilliant butter sauce!!! All of this woven together with house prosecco that was light and perfect. We are still dreaming of this meal and definitely recommend this place as an escape from the busy tourism madness of Venice!

When I arrived at this spot all outdoor seating was taken , so I sat inside. The interior is very cosy, and I can imagine even more during autumn and winter. The waiter was very forthcoming and gave good advice. I tried the sardines with white polenta as starter. I liked it every bite especially the fluffy white polenta. As I had fish the last couple of days I went for the beef filet with mixed vegetables. You could taste that the meat was first class and the vegetables were cooked on spot meaning not to raw and not to mushy. Accompanied with a quarter of rosé, I enjoyed every bite of this meal. Be aware that if you are in a hurry, you should avoid this place. There is a paper on the window telling everyone that they are part of the Slow Food movement. Anyway a spot I would definitely revisit.

Great food and atmosphere! Authentic Italian cuisine. The Calamari appetizer was the best I've ever eaten. The fried arugula mixed in with the calamari gave it a nutty flavor with s crunch. Delicious!! The Gnocchi was my main course and it was so tender but Firm. Also delicious!!

Note: as of 9/15/2017 the address in Yelp is incorrect and will send you 15 minutes in the wrong direction. The address is Dorsodura 2852, not 2052. The actually location is on Campo San Barnaba. If you go to the website the map and address are correct. Now that the adminstrative details are done let's talk about the meal we had there. Although it was a cool and windy day we elected to sit at one of the tables on the square. Lots of fun people watching. We started with two antipasti that we shared, a caprese salad with burrata, and a seafood sampler. The caprese was the best we've ever eaten due to the amazing burrata. If you don't know, burrata is like an immature mozzarella where the center is soft and, in this case, liquid. The flavor and consistency of the cheese have ruined is for ordinary caprese salad. Rich smooth and creamy. The seafood sampler was also delicious, but not for those who might not like tentacles. There was calamari in squid ink (black gelatinous and slightly metallic tasting); sardines in sour sauce and onions; a calamari salad with tentacles, potatoes, and salad verbless in oil and vinegar (yum); a part-like preparation that was fish mixed with some binder (possibly potatoes) that was great alone or sheared on bread; a whole octopus (small) that was possible smoked a little; and a nice polenta that was particularly good with the squid ink. We followed up with gnocchi pomodoro with mozzarella. The gnocchi were a bit dense and the sauce under seasoned. A little additional salt greatly improved it. We finished off with a slice of torte with chocolate layers and a pistachio cream filling topped with chocolate ganache, accompanied by the obligatory cappuccino. With wine and sparkling water the total was less than 80 Euros. Not cheap, but not excessive for Venice. The service was friendly, but they think they understand English better than they actually do, which led to some delays and confusion, but all worked out in the eating.

Spaghetti con seppie in nero and the beef dish for dinner. Both have room for improvement.

Dinner at Ristoteca Oniga was okay, but it wasn't anything wonderful. We had to wait about five minutes for an open table. One of the servers working who told me the wait would be about five minutes was either overwhelmed or rude (or both?) as she came off quite curt and unwelcoming when we entered the restaurant. Once we finally sat down, we waited a while for a server to approach us. Johnny Depp's twin eventually was our server, and he was fairly friendly. Our calamari appetizer with fried calamari and fried spinach straws was delicious! The fish tasted fresh, and the batter was perfect. I ate the spaghetti con seppie in nero for my meal because I knew I had to try it at some point during my 10 days in Italy. Honestly, it wasn't that great. The pasta itself was cooked perfectly, but the black sauce simply had a mild and almost bland fish flavor. I found the dish pretty boring. What was not boring for my husband was the amusement of watching me eat and getting black sauce stuck on my lips and teeth. My husband did not particularly enjoy his steak dish and indicated that it was not a good quality cut of steak from the get-go. His steamed veggies as the side dish were lovely, though. This restaurant was full of locals, so it was nice that we weren't eating at a tourist trap. All in all, Ristoteca Oniga had goods and bads. We are still raving about our meals in Venice at Impronta Cafe and Enoteca ai Artisti. Put those on your to-eat list instead of Ristoteca Oniga.

Great option for dinner without reservations. We walked in after 9pm and got to choose a secluded seat by the window. There was a dinner special for 2 people that included a humongous bowl of mixed shellfish. It's really a generous amount! They throw in a mound of spaghetti halfway through your meal to soak up the sauce, and finish everything off with dessert wine and cookies. It was one of our more affordable meals in Venice, and one of the most filling too! Our waitress was prompt and courteous, and even gave us a free sampling of chamomile grappa, which we inquired about after seeing another large party with it. Overall, a generally pleasant experience that didn't break the bank!

We were recommended this restaurant by a family friend as a must go to dinner spot in Venice. We were so glad for the recommendation. The ambiance was relaxed and peaceful and the food was out of this world. We started off with and order of calamari, and mussels and clams. We suggest to get the order of mussels and clams for 1 person because it was plenty for both of us to share. The calamari was lightly battered and super tender. For our pasta dish, we shared the squid ink pasta with octopus and it had to be my favorite pasta dish of our time in Italy. This is a must go spot for great Venetian seafood.

My wife and I had two lunches here, both excellent, clean, fresh and tasty. Loved the salads, the mussels and clams and dessert.

The ambiance and location are nice. The restaurant is filled entirely with Americans. The food is "okay." I wouldn't go back.

Lots and lots of restaurants to choose from in Venice but this unassuming restaurant is a true gem…read more It's easy to miss as it's tucked in a corner right by a bridge. Once inside they have a couple tables with small window views of any gondolas passing by. We started off with a plate of lightly fried sardines topped with pickled white onions. The fry on the fish was super light and those vinegar-y onions were the perfect pairing. We cleaned that plate. The lasagna was well balanced with the meat, sauce, cheese. The squid ink pasta was chewy/al dente with a subtle touch of seafood flavors giving the cuttlefish. It was very umami but nothing too overbearing. Delicious! The jovial mood with the waiters with big personalities is gone. The menu you can find online is no longer available so you get a very limited menu to choose from--nearly entirely seafood. So if you have anyone in your party that just wants pasta with a red meat sauce or a non seafood lasagne, not available. We were a party of 8. Two people ordered the scallop appetizers. Pretty presentation on shells. 3 tiny scallops in the shells. More like an amuse bouche. Totally disappointing. The linguine with clams as an entree had clams so small you almost needed a magnifying glass to see them. Couldn't taste the clams and annoying to try to eat something so tiny , and just try to eat the pasta with all those tiny shells. The baby shrimp on polenta was actually good. But again the shrimp were like tiny hatchlings tempura battered. Tasted okay except for those that were soggy from the polenta that was very soupy. I wanted the gnocchi with crab which was on the very limited menu but no longer available. The alternative was gnocchi with a sea bass sauce which I chose but didn't like at all. The gnocchi were good but the sauce wasn't at all for me. We had to continue to ask for side dishes for the bread, butter, olive oil, salt and pepper. We will not return. Poor value for your money. Plus there is a cover charge and service included in your bill which was a surprise. Very sad to see our favorite Venetian restaurant decline so much.
