Ono Gelato, like Salt & Straw, is expensive ..... unfortunately, that's where the similarity ends .... Their service is mediocre, they make it very clear (two signs) that they don't do samples, and their gelato is nothing special ..... I thought I'd give the place another chance last weekend .... I went up to the counter to order, and the only visible staff member was off to the right, staring down at her phone .... I waited 15 seconds or so -- no greeting, no smile, no connection of any kind; at that point, I decided to walk away .... Very cute spot and usaully a mainstay for me. The ice cream selection is always good. The service is always friendly and offers a chance to taste a flavor before committing to it. I have visited this spot all of my visit's to Maui. It has become a staple for me and one of 3 reasons to make my way to Whaler Village. Glad I went to read them because they are just cranky about the service or no samples or the price (this is Maui on the beach.. it's not going to be Dairy Queen prices). We came here closer to closing, and the lady running the stand said she has been busy since opening! She has been serving people for hours on end, and we wished her a rest while we chose our order. I got Coconut Sorbet with Cheesecake, and my partner got Mango Sorbet with Tiramisu. It was delicious. The gelato was so fresh and flavorful! There was no artificial taste, and it was just the right amount of sweetness. The gelato did melt fast, but the flavor and texture were delightful. They should change the name to OH NO GELATO because everything I asked for is a NO. I'm lactose-intolerant and wanted to sample a few of the non-dairy flavors (coconut, strawberry, etc.) that they have but the "not so friendly" counter girl pointed at a sign and said, "We don't give out tasters". How do you not give out tasters if you are trying to sell gelato or ice cream? It doesn't cost you anything and you quadruple your sales when you do this. Also, how do people know if your products are good or not if they don't get to taste it? Maybe, they are not as good and they don't want you to try them. I ended up buying the coconut and strawberry flavors because my wife didn't want me to cause a scene and I have been wanting to find a non-dairy gelato in Maui. The gelato was decent but their business practices and rude staff turned us off and we will never be coming back. Luckily when we went, the line was very short, even on a very warm evening. They've got lots of different flavors to choose from but they don't offer samples. You can get a pretty good idea of what the flavors would taste like though. I went for the Coffee Crunch (coffee + macadamia nut). I'm always a fan of coffee flavor and the crunch from the macadamia nut was a perfect add on. The gelato was really smooth and creamy. It did melt pretty quick though, so eat quickly! At $7 for a small, single scoop, it's a pricey dessert. Is it worth it? On vacation? Yes. On a regular day? Maybe not all the time. We are staying in Maui for a month with our children. We usually like to get gelato at night after dinner and take a walk on the beach. The service here is absolutely terrible. I asked to sample flavors the woman points to the sign. At least be honest and say you're just cheap and don't want to give anything for "free." But it's not free, because for two ice creams we spent almost $20. They still have a BS sign, that says it's for the safety of their customers. No, it's not for the safety, it's your cheap business that doesn't value customers and has terrible service. Those free samples aren't going to cost you anything. What it is costing you is business. Because now we won't be back because of your rude service. I asked for a little cup to put some gelato for my one-year-old, and the woman said nothing in life is free as she handed me the cup and said that next time she'll charge me for it. What are you gonna charge me one cent? You could've been nice to me, and my family would've been at least another dozen times while we're here. Super good. We went here a couple times while on our Hawaiian vacation. The line was long but it moved quickly. When you get to the order position, it is expected that you know what you want. So, if you are in line with others, take turns going to the counter to look at the selections and know what you are going to order when it is your turn. The gelato is way good! I would try it at least once. Drawbacks - expensive, when it comes time to tip, the person behind the counter doesn't let you have access to the ipad processing your payment and they ask you to tell them how much tip to add. I was immediately turned off when I was forced to tell the attendant how much I should put for her tip on the screen when I Apple paid because there was a partition preventing me from doing it myself. Very awkward. I opted to give her 15% on a $35 bill for 4 gelato orders which came out to $5.31 for her tip. I felt weird if I'd only tip $2 or $3 which is customary for an ice cream shop. The gelato place doesn't offer any samples either. I'd avoid this place all together. I'd give them 2 stars had it not been for the nice attendant who asked if we'd parked there and she validated our parking. There is no reason why they should have the screen partitioned off from customers. Or to not do samples. It's a tourist spot.
