With so many subpar sushi places in town, I was not expecting much when we dined at Onori for the first time last night. Wow, was I surprised! We were greeted by a friendly gentleman who made sure we were seated promptly. The sushi bar was packed, but there were a few tables available. Our server was friendly and patient while we decided on our order. She also explained the set menus to us. My husband had the Taste of Onori and I had the Little Onori, both came with a small serving of edamame and a piping hot miso soup. I've been here twice. First experience was fine. Second experience was disappointing. We arrived around 12pm. Only one other table with customers were seated before us. As we waiting for our food, two other tables were seated maybe 5 minutes after us and received their food before us. Some of my favorite pieces of were seared black cod, albacore sushi, toro hand roll and o- toro. One of my favorite crispy rice spicy tunas. The rice was on the thinner side and nice heaping amount of spicy tuna. Mixed experiences. We have been here twice so far. First time was great, service and dining experience was high level. Suggestions on the order we enjoy the rolls/ sushi was a nice touch. But the second time was not so great. Felt rushed, and didn't experience the same level of service. For instance, when we had asked which order we should enjoy, the server told us it does not matter... we were caught off guard, and felt silly for asking. We also had to ask for things several times, and we believe we didn't get some items from the set menu... This is 5 stars. Period. Chris - the chef is a master. Sugar fish done with more personality/thought into the menu. What I mean by that is Chris chose to not serve multiple of each fish. He wants you to experience a different fish with each bite/nigiri. THAT is how omakase should be done. Don't get me wrong I love sugarfish. I just love this more. And having the owner/chef treat you like a friend is just a better experience in general. Digestion is enhanced greatly by feeling appreciated. Coming from someone that has also been a chef (me) and that is lucky enough to eat all over the world, Temecula is REALLY LUCKY to have him. Just look at the dismal fish sections in every grocery store here. The only place to get decent fish is that one vendor at the farmers market. So it takes effort to get it here fresh and this good. Came here several times since this place opened, Friday night I put my name in for a table just to wait over an hour, and watch other groups who clearly came in after my grp get called and seated at both the bar and tables. We finally just left and ate elsewhere. One group of 6 were just sitting at the bar, no food in front of them, just hanging out drinking alcohol with someone behind the bar, while large amounts of people were waiting for a very long time. Management should really take control and oversee the 'sign in' system, if someone behind the sushi bar can hangout and drink alcohol with customers then they can surely afford to pay someone to take names and properly seat people in the order they arrived. This is absolutely our new favorite hand roll/sushi restaurant in Temecula. The service was incredible as soon as we walked in, everyone was smiley and accommodating instantaneously! We ordered about 3 hand rolls each and about 2 cut rolls and an order of edamame. The food came out so fast and there was no denying how fresh everything was. I was hoping for some stellar sushi close to home. Unfortunately I do not think Onori's food was exceptional. I would say it was mid level, and even a little sub par. It looked like the sushi cuts were made with a dull knife. Sushi options are a bit plain. Miso soup was lacking some salt, and my partner was turned off by the sushi when he found something hard and crunchy in his blue crab sushi roll (perhaps it was a piece of shell). The chairs had a good amount of food stuck in the crevasses and there was food stains splattered on the wall next to us. As a brand new restaurant I was expecting more tidiness. Best handroll restaurant I've ever had. As an Angelino, that's pretty impressive. All the fish was fresh, the nori was crispy and full of umami, the rice was perfect. They have a marinated wasabi that was very unique and delicious. From the sunomono salad to the red snapper nigiri to the toro handroll. Everything was fantastic. Great atmosphere, great service. The staff were attentive and I'm usually a snob when it comes to the fish to rice ratio at sushi restaurants, but they have it perfectly balanced here. We the had the negi toro handroll, soft shell crab handroll, crispy tuna rice app, uni sushi, otoro sushi. My husband isn't usually a fan of uni but this one was so fresh and sweet, he was a fan. Went here with a few friends and my husband. I was a bit nervous because he isn't too into sushi. We realized too late that there wasn't ramen, plates, etc. for him to fill him up. He then discovered wagyu nigiri and I think we had multiple orders. He also ate some of my nigiri especially the seared cod! This place is still fairly new. So my husband and I give them the benefit of the doubt that they are going to do amazing. The first time we dined with them it wasn't the best experience, as it took a while for them to bring out our order. It took our waitress a while to even bring out our drinks and we noticed that she kept hopping around to all the tables.
