Total disappointment since last visit. The service was poor. There was only one person handling the eat in, carry out orders, phone and food service. The gyros were dry. I had the Chicago gyro and the meat was dry and flavorless and same for the ground beef burger gyro. However, the tzatziki was great. I personally love this place for most things. I would say that the gyros are very good. My gf and I like to get the Chicago gyro because it's beef and lamb. I ordered the Greek/lamb burger recently and it left something to be desired. They definitely overcooked it on this day. But the flavors of everything else on the burger were good. I love getting the fries on the gyro (or they'll even put them on the side if you prefer). Their baklava is legit the second best baklava I've ever had. The service is usually middle of the road when we dine in. It's always friendly but sometimes a tad slow. We've never had to wait to order to go and never had to wait for a table! The ambiance feels like a little Greek restaurant. It's quaint and has pictures of Greece on the walls. It's also got plenty of seating for groups or if it happens to be busier. Opa Mezze Grill is located in a shopping center, on the far end of the center after the Giant Food store. It's a quaint little spot, sort of one or two steps up from a carryout pizza place. You can get by just being casual, or have a nice dinner with your spouse or friends. Have had 2 meals at Opa Mezze Grill now, and have had an entree (Lamb Kampama) and a sandwich (Opa Gyro, the one with fries in it). First, the gyro, which, as an American of Greek decent, may have been the best gyro I've EVER had! It was pork tenderloin based gyro meat, its edges toasted by the vertical rotisserie. That slight "crisp" along with the savory pork was crazy good! The tzatziki sauce is ridiculously good - the owner explained that it took him two days to make that sauce....what a technician this guy is! There were fries in the sandwich, just like in the Plaka in Athens. All of this was in a tightly wrapped pita, and it was a friggin symphony of flavors - I can't recommend this gyro enough! The restaurant actually has 2 rotisseries going at once - one with port tenderloin and the other with lamb gyro meat (the Greeks hearing this are really perking up, now....). Haven't tried it yet, buy will give it a go soon! Now, for the visit where I had the Lamb Kampama. The meal comes with a side salad, and we upgraded to the "Horiatiki Salad, aka the Village Salad". Outstanding! You can actually get the Village Salad topped with a protein - that would be an excellent choice as an entree..... The lamb shank was big and tasty...well seasoned, with a tasty Kampama sauce. Delicious! Where this meal needs help is with the overcooked and soggy orzo. You almost couldn't find the orzo through the over-abundance of sauce! And once you did find the orzo, it was bland and overcooked. Disappointing.... My wife had the Lamb Kabob with rice. Her meal also started with a Village Salad (paid the up charge). I've already told you about the salad, so, on to the Kabob....which was a B+, only because it was a little dry, but still very good. In summary, this place is so close to 5 stars, but that Lamb Kampama really hurt my rating, knocking it down to a 4. They told me that their Branzino was very good, and I may try that next, but Opa is going to be my "go-to" for gyros going forward! read more

Updated Review: I used to come here all the time for Avgolemono soup. I still love their soup, but $10 for a small maybe 12oz cup of soup is outrageous. I think that it used to be $6 which was even a lot. I know that prices have gone up everywhere, but at $10 for a 12 oz cup of soup, that's nearly $1 per oz. If they were to lower their prices a bit, even just a little bit, I think that they'd get more business. Super yummy place however, and very kind staff. Super cool Greek interior as well. I remember when Opa opened probably 10 years ago or so and we made the trip to Ashburn to have gyros as I always liked a good gyro. I felt the food was good and always fresh and the service was always friendly and fast. Fast forward years later and we usually get our gyro/greek fix from Plaka these days which we really enjoy. Why do I bring up Plaka? To compare of course...The big difference I see between the two is the Chicago gyro at Plaka consists of chunks of cut/shaved pork so it's a bit different from your typical gyro meat which is what you get here. The Chicago gyro is still good here but better at Plaka. Only other comment I'll make is the gyros came out at room temperature...not hot, not warm...almost cold. I still ate it and we didn't complain but must note that. Overall, I support independent, family run businesses and I realize folks can have an off day. I am sure Opa puts out top notch food and excellent service on a regular basis but the temperature of the gyros on this trip warrants 3.5 stars. If we are in the area again we'd give them another shot as it isn't easy to have the ling term success Opa has had. read more

I've heard good things about OPA, but tend to forget about it, kinda gets lost in the shopping center. I'm very glad we decided to try it today. The service is simple incredible, they all seem to have a passion to serve, very friendly. I had the chicken souvlaki with OPA fries, which are fries served with feta cheese and dressing. Next time I will get the popular appetizer of some cheese with pita, served flambé at the table, seemed popular with the regulars. Desserts looked awesome, I had (can't recall the long Greek name), dough filled with custard and honey that was amazing. Will be back soon for that appetizer. read more

First time trying Opa! Mezza Grill and really enjoyed it. I would describe it as a small casual place, that is located in a retail shopping center. A fair amount of seats but not a large restaurant by any means. The nice thing about smaller places like this, is that you usually are given more attention as a patron. This was the case when I visited. It feels like they are genuinely happy to have you dine there. We were waited on by a gentleman that likely owned the place. At least that is the impression I got from his pride in the place and attention to detail to serving us our food. We stopped in for a late lunch and the place only had a few others in there eating so it was fairly quiet. The food was outstanding and had true authentic Greek taste and presentation to it. We had the Opa chicken, a chicken skewer with fries, spanakopita, and a Greek salad. The fires were prepared with Greek seasoning on them which was awesome. Everything we ate was amazing. Great tasting food, fair prices, great service and an authentic Greek feel/taste to the dishes. Additionally, they were super attentive. I came here with my friend and we ordered quite a lot. She ordered the Chicago Gyro and I got the Opa Gryo. We split the Opa Fries and Spanakopita. Finally wrapping everything up with the Baklava. The food was flavorful and action packed. The fries were a lot and I recommend getting it for a table to split. The gyro was filled with a lot of seasoned meat and the fries on top provided great texture to the sandwich. I highly highly recommend getting the Baklava no matter how full you are. It was the perfect ending to our meal. The price was super reasonable and would definitely come here again. This place has really satisfied my craving for gyros and everything else! There are only a very few reasons for a girl who lives in Alexandria to venture out all the way to Ashburn...and one of the reasons is to eat at Opa! I seriously love eating here, and never been a time where I've been disappointed--and I've definitely ventured out close to ten times before I decided to write this review. I can't review for all items as we tend to always lean towards the same thing: chicken souvlaki on pita bread with Opa style (fries embedded inside the pita); hummus with pita bread; and kid's menu chicken souvlaki with rice (instead of fries). We've also tried the Chicago gyro (lamb and beef) on pita and falafel on pita bread as well, but we love the chicken souvlaki so we end up getting the same thing. We don't live close enough, and must take advantage of eating what we enjoy the most! Not only are the pita sandwiches great, but their tzatziki sauce is fantastic--you can really taste the freshness and the yogurt; nothing fake about it. And the hummus is SO yummy--not too grainy or dry: just perfect. And if my 4-year old devours their food (he loves the rice...), it's a winner! Side Note: 1. It's in a shopping center next to Giant, so there are ample amount of parking spaces available. 2. They close on Mondays. 3. My son loves the Hershey Kisses they give out after you get your check--a little treat after a meal. 4.
