Gave Opal another try after a ruined anniversary dinner several years ago due to lacking service. In that instant we waited over 20 minutes after having been seated for a server to even stop by. Needless to say we walked out. Last night seemed promising as we were seated right at our reservation time and tended to after about a 10 minute wait. We had drinks already so I guess that was an indication to our server to take his time. Appetizer was delicious (spicy shrimp bruschetta) but difficult to share and pretty minuscule for the price. I had the very pricy steak and the sear tasted like it was done in a well used pan. Burnt is the only description for the taste I have. The meat underneath was pretty flavorless and for nearly $60 it's sad when the delicious potatoes and asparagus outshine the star steak. My wife's salmon was very good but she didn't feel the size of the dish was worthy of the price tag. Our server was good but seemed winded every-time he stopped by to check on us. Opal, to me, is similar to Tavern & Table. A completely different experience at the bar than in the dining room. Disappointing for sure and I doubt we'll return. Too many tasty nearby options for less than a King's Ransom. Dessert and drinks were great, hence 3-stars but our mains were barely better than 1. read more

In a blink of an eye it seems new restaurants are cropping up all over the area. Opal Restaurant and Bar is one of the newcomers and it deserves its' just due. We went to Opal when they were open just three weeks and I must admit I was impressed. Although I found the dining area to lack warmth and energy in its décor, the entryway is just spectacular. If Chef Patrick Owens and the Opal Dining Group wanted a "wow" factor when you enter, they hit the mark without question. We made reservations and I wondered if we actually needed to. After all, it was a new restaurant in Seaside Farms shopping center and not too widely publicized. Thankfully we had the reservations after all. When we arrived there was already a 45 minute wait for tables and it was only 6:30 p.m.! We were quickly seated and our server immediately approached the table. He was intimately familiar with the menu and told us that he also worked at Langdon's, which is this restaurant's sister concept. A recent local article about Opal stated that the "menu changed daily". I thought this was an aggressive approach to a new restaurant opening. It was the same plan that Sean Brock had with Husk and when we dined there during the first few weeks our entrees took over an hour to hit the table. I hoped that we would not experience the same thing at Opal. As we looked over the menus it appeared I had a different menu that the other three folks at our table. The server quickly explained that I had "last night's menu" and replaced it with the correct one. But get this... The "changing menu" only had one item changed. The fish entrée that was on the menu was switched from flounder to mahi mahi. Hmmm... interesting. We started with 3 appetizers. It's unusual for us to order dinner and appetizers, but things looked very interesting. The Heirloom Tomato, Basil, Purple Onion and Valdeon received rave reviews. The tomatoes were incredibly fresh and tasted as if they were picked that afternoon. The Salad of Local Herbs and Lettuces with Fresh Ricotta and Tomatoes was scooped up in a New York minute - again, a fan favorite. My Spicy Local Shrimp Bruschetta with Chiles and Garlic could have been a meal in of itself. Two very large toasted slices of crispy crusted bread were topped with heavenly, perfectly cooked, spicy shrimp. Reluctantly I shared it. But when I go back to Opal this appetizer is definitely on my repeat list. Our entrees were perfectly timed and served piping hot. Two diners ordered the Sweet Bay Acres Crispy Chicken Breast with Arugula, Heirloom Tomatoes, Fennel, Prosciutto and Vincotto. The gents thought this dish was superb and I had a hard time bartering for a taste. The Seared Diver Scallops, Brunoise of Local Zucchini, Tomato, Corn, Israeli Couscous and Brown Butter was a big win. Usually someone that eats half of her entrée and takes home the other half finished this - hands down! When ordering my entrée of house made Tagliatelle with Pork Sausage, Broccolini and Marjoram our server told me that it was not a "large portion" (pasta prices ranged from $15 - $17), and he was right. My dish was the smallest of the entrees and unfortunately the most disappointing. The pasta was a bit mushy, which I could tolerate, but the dish overall was bland and lacked flavor. I would say though that like Langdon's this restaurant is a bit pricey. We were interested in the Charcuterie & Cheese but one small sampling was $5.00 and it went up to $41.00 when the offer was increased to 12. We saw this delivered to another table and based on the portion sizes it seemed overpriced. I can't speak to the flavor because it looked great, just expensive. Despite my pasta snafu we still managed to leave the restaurant very full and plan to return. I was very impressed that despite only being opened three weeks the restaurant ran like a well-oiled machine. read more

So disappointed! Made a reservation for my birthday dinner with high hopes. Reservation was for 7:30pm on a Saturday night. Restaurant was 3/4 full. Seated at 7:30 by hostess. Waited to be greeted by server, she didn't greet us until 7:41. I looked at my phone because it felt like forever. After waiting 11 minutes for her to appear we were actually thinking about leaving when she walked up. She took our drink order and said she would bring us some bread, we didn't get our drinks until 7;55, and the bread appeared at 7;59. These times are ridiculous for a restaurant that's 75% at capacity. Maybe Hall's has spoiled me but when it's a special night you hope when choosing an upper scale restaurant that service will be upper scale. Our server was kind, but timing was horrible. Our food was well prepared but inatentiveness ruined the whole experience. To top it off we were told the dessert cake we chose would take 10 minutes to prepare so we declined then waited 10 minutes for her to pick up our credit card payment. In all honesty, most everything I've tasted here is really delicious and Opal deserves a solid 4-stars for the food quality, but I take one away because this place is so pricey! This restaurant is located in a shop/work/eat row of buildings in the heart of Mt. Pleasant--this is not on King or East Bay downtown Charleston and I just think it is too much to ask of patrons to pay $30/plate! What's more, I can certainly find a comparably delicious Napa Valley cab for $8-10/glass vs their $12/glass just around the corner. Grilled swordfish, parpadelle, salmon, scallops, charcuterie, salad...I come back, admittedly, again and again because it's all delicious, but only after momma gets paid. I visited for the restaurant week menu, hoping for a better deal but with 3 courses for $40 and 2 glasses of wine at $12ea, I'm in it for $70 before a generous tip, which the servers deserve. And that is a bill for just me! The tagliatelle with shrimp and chorizo was a generous portion but significantly oversalted--the first time I've had an issue with seasoning here though. The salmon was so perfectly cooked that I can't even stand it. I want to go back tonight for more salmon--it's easy to get suckered back into this place because of the goodness, but at the end I feel like the sucker after paying the bill. read more

One of our new favorite restaurants in Mt. Pleasant. My wife and I celebrated our Wedding Anniversary at Opal last evening. Our server, Christy, greeted us with congratulations and complimentary glasses of champagne. My wife started off her meal with a dozen cold water oysters and I opted for a small portion of of Pappardelle with Wild Mushrooms and Black Truffles. Both were excellent. We both decided on the Grilled Bone-In Rib Pork Chops with Gnocchi in an Apple Citrus Pan Sauce. The entrees were well prepared and delicious. Our waitress Christy was right on with her menu suggestions and her service was impeccable. She and her assistant made certain that we were pleased with our food selections and that everything was up to our expectations. We will definitely look forward to our next visit to Opal read more

One of my favorite restaurants in the Charleston area. Have been here 3 times and it is always amazing. Went with another couple and we ordered a charcuterie plate with speck, prosciutto and 3 cheeses based on our wonderful server's recommendation. We also ordered the lemon basil mussels (huge portion) which were also delicious. For our entrees- I ordered the tagliatelle bolognese with lemon ricotta (better than in Italy in my opinion), Lauren ordered the bone in pork chop with brussel sprouts and gnocchi, and the husbands both ordered the Surf and Turf special with filet, shrimp, asparagus and mashed potatoes. We all tasted a little of everything and everything was soooo good. We had a great time, laughed a lot and really enjoyed the food and service! read more

Had a great dinner here tonight. Wasn't sure what I wanted, so I asked for recommendations, and ended up with a 3 piece charcuterie (2 meat, 1, cheese) and Cruda (pretty much steak tartare). Both were excellent! Charcuterie: You can make your own choices, or let the chef choose for you. I chose the latter, and was happy with what I got: Soppressata, Fennel infused Finochietta, and Manchego Cheese. Additionally, there were crackers, pickles, pickled veggies, nuts, mustards, and honey. The Cruda was my first foray into steak tartare and I was not disappointed. It was well seasoned with a blend of oil, spices, shiitake mushrooms, and capers. There was probably more, but I can't recall. Drinks were great too - I had a dark & stormy made with Goya Ginger Beer, which had a spicy bite to it! The staff was friendly, and the place was very busy. There were a lot of regulars coming in who knew the waitstaff there, which is always a plus to me! I highly recommend Opal, and will be going back before my short trip to the area is over! read more

Had our second dinner at Opal last night and it did not disappoint. Both times we have been we sat at the bar for our meal. The conversations with the bartenders and other patrons have been great and the service is spot on. We started with a small charcuterie board - one meat, two cheeses. Perfect! (We will need to return for their half price charcuterie during happy hour!) Split a salad (arugula and romaine - delish) and entree (grouper - fantastic) and polished off a bottle of wine. When we arrived we loved the ambiance in Opal, very romantic dim lights. The staff was very friendly and very welcoming. We sat at our table and order two apps, mussels and the shrimp bruschetta. Both were EXCELLENT. I am going to even say the mussels were one of the best I've ever had. For dinner we ordered cavatelli with veal and ricotta meatballs. Ugh. Disappointing. It was very very very salty. The meatballs were over cooked and dry. I don't want to say that they were previously frozen but it was either that or over cooked. It is also very over priced for a pasta dish. I get it, mount peasant restaurant but to charge 24 dollars I'd expect a family sized dish. My wife simply ordered a house salad. Service: 5 stars! I don't know what's going on with Opal Restaurant! This is the 3rd time I've gotten subpar meal. I ordered 2 Middle cut steaks, the outside of mine was so char that the meat was inedible. From cocktails to desserts, this place knows what it is doing, and it does it right! We started with cocktails, a couple of us chose from the house menu, but I wanted something with gin and asked if the bartender could do a bees knees - she nailed it! Tart with a hint of honey. My husband started with the Spicy Shrimp Bruschetta - the problem here is you only get one, so not much sharing with the table, but I snagged a bite and it was very good! They had a fall salad on the menu with green apples, brie and a light vinaigrette. Simply perfect, the freshest greens, the apple, crisp and tart, cold brie and not drowning in the dressing. My husband ordered the soup special, a creamy tomato with a basil swirl - I would buy this by the gallon - and want in on hand always, it was so well prepared and tasty. Our dinner companions raved about the tagliatelle bolognese, which is one of my favorites when done well. Hands down - the Opal kitchen knows what is doing. The pasta was flavorful and tender, the sauce just delicious. The menu you has so many choices that I want to try, but I have a feeling, like our dinner companions, I will choose the tagliatelle each time... On to dessert, because yes they have some great choices, but I shared the Chocolate pots de creme with frangelico - creamy and rich - heavenly. We ended with limoncello, one of my favorites! Opal is a hidden gem!! I almost didn't even want to write a review on this place because I can only imagine what the wait times will grow to as more and more people discover this restaurant. Opal, although extremely pricey (in my opinion), serves some of the best pasta in Charleston, if not my personal favorite. Their Pappardelle with Wild Mushrooms and Black Truffle is DIVINE. On Tuesdays, they have 1/2 price charcuterie boards that are definitely worth trying (better than Edmond's Oast's). If I could financially afford to, I would eat at this place every week. read more

4.5 Stars Sorry for the late report. My wife and I went here 2 weekends ago. We loved it so much that we went the next night after the first visit on Saturday. The first night we started with oysters on a half shell. For the entrees my wife had the hand made Cavatelli with Veal and Ricotta Meatballs, Brocollini and Oregano and I had the special of the night which was a Filet Mignon with Carolina Shrimp and Beurre Blanc Sauce. We returned the next night and just had the seafood soup and bowl of mussels. These were really delicious. I wish we had another day to stay so we could return and try some other dishes. The wine selection here is really nice and the prices are good too. Also the service was spot on. We will return to Opal when we visit the Charleston / Mt Pleasant area early next year. read more

There are also multiple aps here that could have made a great multi course dinner: warm house made mozzarella with charred tomato herb relish and prosciutto, spicy local scrimp bruschetta, (which we did share) and finally baked veal and ricotta meatballs with parmesan. This was a fabulous meal on Saturday evening! JR C. wanted to take me out for Mother's Day and he got a reservation for 8:15 p.m. here. We were seated promptly (we got there a little early, but the bar is TINY, so there were no spots...no problem, over to Basil we went - stay tuned for that review) in the back of the restaurant and it was absolutely beautiful. Very nice dim lighting with the light of dusk coming in through the large windows. Our server was super friendly, and our first round of cocktails were wonderful. I had the champagne/St. Germain one - I am a sucker for St. Germain. For charcuterie, we had the lamb prosciutto, duck ham, and the absolute all star was the soft heritage prosciutto. Mon deux. We also had the taleggio and the midnight moon - both excellent. For dinner, I went with the filet and it was cooked perfectly medium rare and the chive potatoes were incredible!! We shared a bottle of wine (Predator Old Vine Zinfandel - holy shit was that a great bottle of wine) and left full and very happy. I highly recommend it for a special night out! read more

So yes, I'm red-faced for overlooking this beautiful gem of a restaurant. Beef tartare -- amazing! Entirely delightful. Mussels were half-priced (Wednesday night) and doubly-good! My charcuterie and cheese board was as good as I've ever had. I'm proud to be Opal's newest fan. read more

Like Andrew, I also can't believe there are barely any reviews for Opal. I kind of get it though since this was my first time here and I live within walking distance. After last night though, I will most certainly be back. It is pricey but not surprising considering the quality of the food here. I had a glass of wine, the smaller size pasta dish and dessert. My total with tip was around $40. And truth be told, I wished I would've thrown in an app at the beginning because I was still a little hungry. I think it's all worth it though. I met a friend there and we were seated immediately as it wasn't at all crowded. We had great service from beginning to end and the food was amazing. And oh, the bread. They put fresh ground spices in the dipping oil that must contain crack because I almost ate the whole loaf of bread myself since my friend isn't much of a bread eater. For my entree, I had the duck and goat cheese mezzaluna pasta with sauteed spinach that was really good. All their pastas are homemade and you can definitely tell. For dessert, the Meyer Lemon Creme Brulee was perfect. I didn't try my friend's food, but she also liked everything she had which included the duck rillettes which looked incredible. And get this. She orders the Hazelnut Cake and the server says "It's going to take a bit longer for the cake if that's all right. We bake them to order." Sold! I will definitely be going back soon to work my way through their menu because everything sounds amazing. read more

I went here for New Years Eve with 5 friends. The reservation was made 3 months in advance. When we arrived we were told that there was predetermined menu that was $70 per person. We confirmed our reservation twice over the phone and were asked to leave a card on file, which is no problem but during these conversation the predetermined. menu was never discussed. After spending large sum on dinner, we were told to leave with 3 unfinished glasses of wine at the table. I have worked for 3 years as a server at a mediocre steakhouse and that would never accepted. Would not recommended. Food was good, but service put damper on all of our New Years. read more
