Really cool location and decor. My husband, daughter and I stopped in on a Saturday afternoon and there were only 2 other customers there, but we loved that :) The atmosphere is warm and homey and really feels lived in. We'd love to come back on a date night and check out the nightlife (sans baby). The barrista was helpful and really upbeat and one of the customers even gave us his suggestion of what to order. We went with a caramel mocha and enjoyed it while we sat on the couch and took everything in. We'll definitely be back! read more

Dear Opening Bell, I love my new loft in the Southside on Lamar! I love that I can roll into my pj's, grab my coffee cup and stumble to the elevator and it will deliver me to Opening Bell. I follow the smell of coffee to the front counter and the nice lady fills up my cup. The best part is it only costs a $1! WTF! I leave a buck as a tip. I love this place! My only complaint is: More breakfast food! Can you make me a sausage and egg biscuit? Time to update my review (pasted below) from 3 years ago... I'm updating because Opening Bell continues to expand their offerings and improve the experience, which was already great! In the 3 years since my first review Opening Bell, they continue to make it better. The biggest development has been something I really love, adding products by local companies. Pickles, Donuts, Cake Balls etc. Fostering local partnerships and supporting each other is a tremendous thing and benefits the community and the customers. There's so many new items, and the list continues to expand, that I try to sample something new each time I'm there. The staff is always friendly and helpful. A lot of them are the same musicians you see on stage at night. You may not have heard of all of the musicians that play there, but have no doubt that they're all great. Another new event, that I really want to get to, is Trivia nights. Unfortunately, they've been on nights I work late so far. OH AND... they have a vintage console (one of those old giant ones we all used to have and you often find them spinning vinyl. This is very cool! The main thing I love about Opening Bell is their commitment to making sure customers have a good experience there whether it's getting a cup of coffee to go or staying around for several hours having dinner and listening to music If you're in the DFW metroplex or just passing through, try to build a stop at Opening Bell into your plans. (the following is my original review) We love Opening Bell and have been going there for years. Great atmosphere to hang out, best place to hear original music in town and a great place for business meetings. Love the fresh coffee here! Me and my co-workers lived off of Opening Bell during the week we were working out of Dallas, and I am so glad this place exists where it does. It's actually in the basement of where we were staying, and due to our hectic schedule, we couldn't venture too far away from home base. The staff is super friendly and accommodating. We arrived pretty late at night and just needed a little sustenance. The staff was closing up and most of the food was already gone, however, they were willing to opening up he register and pull out all of the food they had already stored. Our first night was much better thanks to the kind people at Opening Bell. Honestly, if I lived in Dallas, I probably would visit it regularly. The space is comfortable with little nooks for privacy, there is wonderful music and performances for reasonable prices, and the food is great. Once upon a time a little hidden gem existed below the surface of seriousness. Just a door. Then some stairs. Bill greeted us at the door. (Owns the record store and cute as a button) he put us on the list for us to get in to see Peter Harper. Lol. It was a cozy night, a quiet night, after the storm of what had happened with the Dallas Police Department the night before, just across the street, so everyone was in a state of thankfulness. Once you go down the rabbit hole it opens up into this cute little vintage style, quirky, all sorts of randomness that has to do with music from legends to antiques with groovy sitting spaces in case you want to sit for 2 or sit in a group. What I loved about seeing Peter Harper is the fact that he knows everybody in the room by name and opens the floor up between songs for questions. It was just a light way to enjoy company and realize that what is important in life really is love of other people and yourself. So we drank a crappy bottle wine, because that's all they carry, but we didn't even care because it wasn't important. The sound in here is incredible for lounge style acoustic and superb vocals. I did not try the coffee so I can't speak for it however the menu looks incredible. Street parking seems to be pretty easy around the place now that Cedars Social from back in the day is just not as popular. I've been in all the spots up and down all these streets and not once have I ever come across OBC. I'm quite happy that my first experience was so delightful. I will definitely be back in October for his show hopefully sooner. It was lovely meeting everybody in attendance and the staff is exceptional. read more

I went to Opening Bell yesterday to scope it out because a my roommate in Nashville is coming through town later in January and is playing a show there. Besides the fact that it's a bit inconveniently located for my purposes, I loved my experience at Opening Bell. They don't do just coffee - it's a great place for a cup of joe or an 'adult' beverage depending on how you feel. I had a nice chocolate chip cookie warmed up to accompany my hazelnut coffee, which was delicious. In house, they have free refills on the joe (something I'm not accustomed to)! They also serve food - which I intend to try next time I'm there. While I wasn't there for a performance, they have live music all the time, and even sell the artists CDs in the corner of the store (100% of the proceeds go directly to the artists, too). The atmosphere was cozy and comfortable, with tables or sofas - depending on your mood. The stage is situated in the back corner of the shop. The staff is friendly and helpful, and there's free wifi if you need to get some work done. It seems to me that Opening Bell has something for everyone! read more

It's a great place to hang out and relax. A true independent shop, feels like a scene out of the 80's move "Singles". A place with a personality, for the locales to hang out. Seattle 1980s + grunge scene. 10 yrs in biz....doing something right. Here's the rub....it's a "coffee shop" in 2013 so....what about the coffee???? Baristas- nice folk- were clueless about their product. I ordered a cafe latte.....it had to be the worst coffee I have had in Dallas. Coffee has changed a lot in 10 yrs, this place got left behind. I really love this coffee shop. Seems very low key so it's a great spot to study. I really like the different/flexible seating they offer which makes it a comfy place to be. The drinks are reasonably priced and delicious. It does get a little noisy when they have live music but I usually just move to the table right outside the entrance to continue working. read more

This coffee house has got a cozy setting, chill vibes, artsy stuff around the walls, great coffee and had a bluegrass band performing when I checked them out. It's down a flight of stairs where the lounge area outside is shared with the apartments right next to it. They are open till midnight and it's the perfect place to chill out. read more

This is the coolest coffee shop atmosphere in Dallas. The fact that it's in the basement of the old Sears building makes it very unique (and probably cool in the summer). Basements aren't common in Texas. If you've ever been to Seattle and traversed the many levels of Pike Place Market, Opening Bell feels like it would fit in there. Very cool place. I haven't been there for live entertainment, but I bet it's amazing. The coffee was good as well. I had the iced coffee and I'd probably put it in my top 5. Clean and flavorful... the way I like it. I love Opening Bell Coffee! Not only are they next door to my office, but they serve some great local coffees and food items. I like coming here on my lunch break or when I need a few minutes away from the office in the afternoon for a quick pick me up, and some relaxing music. The vibe is cool and relaxed, with plenty of seating (including a soft couch and a few chairs you can curl up in with a good book). The smell reminds me of the coffee shops in the Highlands in Louisville, KY. The vibe reminds me of the coffee shops in the Highlands. Apparently people in the Southside of Dallas love books, as every place I visited had books on display. I guess it is safe to ASSume the intelligentsia lives in this area. I am not sure but I think the do spin vinyl at times. They make a mean latte and the breakfast tacos definitely hit the spot. I have never been a been fan of Dallas because I considered most of the residents fake and heavily made up. But this spot seems to be where the real people hang out and kind of reminds me of Austin, but with black people. read more

Cozy, delicious, & ambient coffee shop! It is located downstairs in a basement-like room with tables, comfy furniture, & a stage for live music. There was only one worker on when I arrived, and she took each customer one by one- order, payment, and creating the drinks before starting with the new person in line. Even so, it moved pretty quickly. I got an almond milk cappucino & an egg, potato, cheese, & green onion breakfast taco with salsa. Both were very good! The cappucino was basic, but stong with good flavor. The taco was delicious- I enjoyed the non-traditional addition of the green onions. It was soft, hot, & tasty! I only wish I was given more salsa- I only got 1 tiny thimble of it. I was only in town for the weekend, but if you are ever in south downtown Dallas, this place is a must for coffee! read more

Always cool vibe with cool friendly people hanging out. One of the best things about Southside on Lamar is Opening Bell! When I had my loft at SSOL, I spent hours at the Bell drinking tea, smoothies, and steamers and munching on sandwiches or delicious desserts, especially those fresh baked cookies while I tapped out email or school work on my laptop. In the evening I could be entertained by a wide range of talent at a price even I could afford on my adjunct professor's salary. Now that I live in the Oak Lawn area, I still take the bus and train to Open Mic night, facilitated by the fabulous Steve Jackson of Acoustic Distortion. Opening Bell is a neat coffee shop located in the basement of a building that provides a cozy atmosphere and a cool vibe simultaneously. I know they host some musical guests here, but I came late at night during a time without a musical guest so it was pretty empty and quiet (not awkward quiet though; there was some nice background music). If you're coming for a first time, be sure to check their calendar so you can avoid or catch the musical guests depending on your preference. My two sisters both ordered a hot spiced chai and I ordered a cortado. We all enjoyed our drinks, but I must say the prices are pretty steep. The three drinks cost me $16. I don't deduct stars for that though; just warning you that the prices are a bit high so you're aware. Also, they don't have a parking lot so you'll have to find some street parking at the meters. I'm definitely a fan of the drinks and the atmosphere so Opening Bell easily earns 4 stars from me, but I can't see myself returning here regularly. I love spending time and relaxing for hours in coffee shops, but this doesn't seem to be the spot for that for me. If I do return, it'll probably be to catch some music. read more

I'm a regular because I work in the building. The food and coffee is great but for some reason they just can't get an order right. I order the same veggie sandwich every time and usually wait 10-15 minutes for it only to have them forget something I wanted on it. (Cheese, extra pickles, mayo & mustard.) Not only is it pretty dang expensive for all veggies at almost $8 but you better have time to kill and not be picky about what you want. I will continue to go back (as I don't have many other options.) But I would love to see the staff trained a little more thoroughly so I can get in and out with no complaints. Would love a little more consistency. Sometimes the sandwich is bomb and other times it's dry and just not done right. read more

Came in on a Sunday and there was a super cool atmosphere. Nice and quiet, homey and unique... I could spend all day staring at the local ads and products and signs inside. This place is tied with 2 of my other faves (coffee spots) , and it would win but it's only indoors I have been fortunate to see some amazing talent here in the eves. Violins, cello, guitar, singing, the list goes on (check out their calendario) Plus i dig the hood The layout is so amazing, entertaining, and eclectic without feeling crowded, etc. its very balanced. Slow. This place is very slow. The people are slow, their processes are slow, there is absolutely 0 sense of urgency. I would go here everyday if they weren't so slow, but instead I come once every two weeks. And I regret it every time.
