I've always drove past The Opera House so when looking for a one night get away, I choose to stay here, i usually go up to Westchester but i needed stay in the south bronx and im surely glad i did. First off, that price was amazing. I'm sad to say i don't remember the name of the gentleman that checked us in, but it was 1/12/16 at 4:30-ish, we were received with a warm and professional greeting and informed about the amenities. There is "milk and cookies" (continental breakfast) at 5am. The dining area located in the mezzanine was very clean and attractive. There is also first-come first-serve parking and access to the crunch gym which is located on a store front next to the entrance of the hotel. All the staff greeted us upon check in and said good morning to us upon check out. Our room was beautiful, well lit, spacious, clean, and everything was in working order. Our king bed room cames with a desk, chair, dresser, closet, iton and ironing board flat screen, cable, a safe, s stainless steel microwave and a stainless steel refrigerator. The refrigerator didn't seem very cold for some reason, just cool, it didn't keep my water cold, but i didn't put much thought into it. The bed and bed sheets were very comfortable, the pillows were ok. The walls had articles, art, and posters about the history of the building which was a nice touch that i appreciated. Our room was located in the back of the hotel with a view of a built up wall that provided privacy and it was very quiet. I felt like i wasnt in the Bronx any more! The area surrounding the hotel is your typical bronx neighborhood but it has everything you need. There's a bunch of opinions for food and even shopping if you want since it is located near the hub of 3rd Avenue. Lincoln hospital is also near by. Definately a place i will be returning to for a night in! Now i have no excuse to drive all the way to Westchester when i have this diamond hotel so close to me. read more

Came to New York for Vacation. This hotel exceeded my expectations! It was affordable, clean, comfortable and close to public transportation (2/5 trains). The staff was very accomodating and Duke at the front desk was very helpful as we needed to check in our bags prior to checking in. The hotel itself is brand new and the rooms are very modern and warm. Two downsides: The room did not come with an iron/ironing board (however, I'm sure the front desk would've been happy to provide one if we needed it). Also, for those who may be unfamiliar with the area, there are several bodegas around and a Walgreens and Duane Reade nearby. The hotel is only a block from the train station, and the street is well lit with people/families walking around. It is seemingly safe as long as you remember that you are in a major city. I will be staying here again when I travel to New York. read more

If the manager decides to fight me on my ADA mandated access rights because some fakers bought online registration cards that aren't at all recognized under the law, there will be contact with the Department of Justice. I have to admit, I was very skittish about staying at this hotel because I usually stay at hotels in city and people have told me horror stories about Bronx hotels. However, I was immediately impressed when I walked in. The staff were very friendly and willing to help in any way that they could. The lobby, although small was very clean and modern. I felt very safe in and around the hotel. When I got to my room, I was really impressed at how beautifully appointed the room was. The furnishing were high end, the room was large very clean and the bed was very comfortable, in fact it was so comfortable that I slept an hour longer than planned. This is totally going to be one of my go to hotels when I am in NY. I cant wait to come back to visit the Opera House Hotel. I also love that this was actually the old Opera House. When you check in there is information about how the hotel came to be in your room. I just cant say enough about this place! If I was asked to pick one negative, it would only be that the breakfast at the hotel is very generic and there are no hot food choices. read more

I've never cared enough to actually write a review but this place was a fabulous deal, had excellent staff and was by far the best hotel I've ever stayed in. The room has a memory foam pillow top and 8 foot tall ceilings and was meticulously cleaned. The staff were very friendly and helped me get to my interview on time; the concierge even printed 5 different routes from hopstop (THE app if you need to take public transit in new york). The morning breakfast was typical of a nice hotel - croissants, espresso, toast etc. And its very close to the bus and metro station. I will definitely stay here again. read more

If you're looking for a comfy cotton hug these beds are it! The hotel, as you can see from the photos, has lots of old school character with some modern flare. The staff was kind and efficient upon check in /out. Be prepared to walk if want food or shopping. We were looking for a nice hotel close to Yankee Stadium. We booked here. What a great find! It's a treasure in the middle of a diverse, vibrant neighborhood. While it's not really in walking distance, it's a quick UBER or Lyft of 7 minutes. The rooms are beautiful, high high ceilings - and the continental breakfast offered is the perfect start to a day. I love this place. The rooms are very comfortable and clean. The mezzanine has a lovely complimentary breakfast, and they put out cookies in the evening. The staff are all very nice and welcoming. This art deco boutique hotel is moderately priced, immaculately kept , centrally located and the staff couldn't be friendlier or more professional. So why not 5 stars ? Welp ...the area isnt the greatest. There ..I said it! However, I feel I should qualify that by stating it's not so seedy as to deter anyone from booking a stay here....just use your common sense when out and about and you'll be fine . Parking is tricky if your driving in folks . If you can't find a space on the street, you could pay up to $20 bucks to park. For the 4th consecutive January, iI have lodged at this boutique hotel which just maybe the best kept secret of NYC. I grew up in the Bronx, in 2015 when I began attending an annual conference in Manhattan after a recommendation by a family member to check this hotel out, I have become a happy yearly guest. Lower than mid-town Manhattan rates, the subway stop is just a block away so you can get to Manhattan in rapid fashion. Great amenities, tasty breakfast and friendly staff. They maintain the premises extremely clean, even the stairwells are polished to a high lustre! The hotel is a historical landmark over a hundred years old but it has been completely modernized. All the rooms, which vary in design as all the hallways display posters of its glorious past as an opera house. The hotel is located in The Hub, which after Times Square, is the highest pedestrian travel area of New York City. On a personal level, after my conference is over, since I am close to my family and friends, its location makes visiting them easier as it does to go to the Bronx Zoo and or Botanical Garden, NYC's real Little Italy along Arthur Avenue/Belmont, Riverdale, City Island and of course Yankee Stadium. The room and other areas were fresh and clean, and the breakfast was sufficient. Stayed here for a wedding in the area and this hotel was great. Very clean and lovely décor. Staff was also very attentive and helpful. Would definitely recommend to others. My only recommendation would be to not plan on having much to do in the area. We had to drive to get to a place for sit-down breakfast. That being said it was a very short drive, there just isn't much within walking distance of the hotel. Hotel parking is very limited but they did have a spot available to us when we arrived. However if they didn't have parking there is a commercial lot on the corner with reasonable prices that would have been our next stop. read more

My 88 yr old father and I drove up to the City for a family funeral in the Bronx. As one might expect, it was somewhat last minute and I had little time to research (in order of importance) a clean, hotel close to the funeral venue that was safe and affordable. With the combined help of Yelp, Trip Advisor, Orbitz and Yahoo Maps, and the Bedbug Registry I had the good fortune of finding The Opera House Hotel. It had stellar ratings from every guest rating site I checked -- all very well deserved AND it had FREE onsite parking (we had a handicap plaquard so our space was still available when we arrived at 2AM - altho all of the other 5 or 6 spaces were taken). First, as noted above we had a very late arrivall. Notwithstanding, our check-in was very smooth. The front desk staff members were wonderful. We had a double/double room that was just beautiful. It was spacious, had ample closet space with iron and ironing board, a sitting area, a desk, nice sized flat screen, clean, shiny bathroom. It is a relatively new (newly renovated) hotel and it shows. They also provided breakfast on the Mezz. level. I highly recommend this hotel and the next time I am in NYC and don't HAVE to stay in Manhattan, I WILL stay here. I LOVE this place. read more

We really enjoyed our stay here. The history of the hotel is what made us want to stay here. There are interesting play bills, posters, and pictures of those that have performed there. We were not lucky enough to get of the few parking spaces but we did find a reasonably priced 24 hour parking garage two blocks away. The rooms were very clean and spacious. Our room was at the back of the hotel and it was very quiet. Breakfast was your typical hotel breakfast. I loved the coffee machine and the option of lattes and cappuccinos available 24 hours a day. The neighborhood is a little sketchy and extremely dirty but we never had a problem. The subway entrance is a block away and easy to find. The people in the subway were very helpful and ensured we got on the right subway. It was a quick 30 minute ride into Manhattan. read more

Free breakfast is standard fare. My only (non) issue is it is very loud. Stayed there a couple days in August and my room had bed bugs. I did not realized that until a night before check out and shower the staff person a couple of pictures. The lady was mortified and said she was going to speak to the manager. He later email, telling me that I probably had an allergic reaction and that there were no bugs found in the room. I sent more pictures and he said they were going to check again, another email later had no apologies, just confirmation about the bed bugs and a 20% discount on my next stay. I was there for work reason and they should have credited all the money back to them. I had to replace my luggage and anything I could not wash in boiling water. read more

We loved our stay in this hotel! Our Air BnB in the Bronx fell through and after a quick search, I found this hotel and by a stroke of good luck, there was one room left! The staff were professional and helpful and were were able to get into our room within a few hours. Parking: Many people have noted that there are only a few parking spaces reserved for hotel guests. We parked on 148th street, behind the hotel and had no problems with our car, or walking to the hotel. So for us, parking was a breeze. Room: The double queen room was spacious, clean and well decorated. We had a microwave and mini refrigerator, which we used for left overs and snacks that we brought. That was a major plus for us. Our room had a great view and was very quiet (313). I stayed in the room with my two teenage sons and we had plenty of space to spread out! Amenities: The hotel's amenities were the bomb dot com. The complimentary breakfast was actually very good. I am vegan and there were plenty of choices for me (oatmeal, bagels, toast, english muffins and fresh fruit). Other choices included juice, pastries, cereal and boiled eggs. Another perk was free coffee, tea, iced flavored water and cookies during the day. Lastly, the espresso machine made hot chocolate, lattes and mochas and completely eliminated the need for coffee shop runs in the morning. There is also guest access to the fitness center adjacent to the hotel, but I did not use this service. Neighborhood/location: The area is urban/inner city, however we quite enjoyed the vibe, bustle and flavor of the area. We had no problem walking around (we walked to a restaurant about a mile away and were fine). Also, the subway station going uptown and downtown are very close (almost right across the street) and we had no problems walking to and from at all hours of the day and night. We also took Lyft a few times and it was a fairly in expensive ride to midtown (about $12-18). Cons: Wifi isn't free (but we had service in our hotel room). Overall - I would say if you are adventurous and don't mind staying outside of Manhattan, this is your spot! I met another traveller who had stayed in the Waldorf Astoria and said this hotel was much nicer! read more

Opera house hotel is nice, but it looks like their main customers are from the block. The floor we stayed on was smoked out (weed smoke) most of the time. They still change a $200 penalty for smoking in the rooms, but these guys don't seem to care. I guess you have to get your money either way though. Some hotels don't allow locals to stay, but I don't think it would be feasible at this point for them to do that. I feel at least 60 percent of their business is locals getting away (or getting it in). It's still worth staying here though if you are from out of town. The rooms are nice, include a microwave refrigerator, updated bathrooms, optimum cable. Modern a/c (no radiators). 24hr hot beverages in the mezzanine level, and free breakfast from 7-10. The train is a short walk up the block, and uber drivers get here in 10 minutes or less. I didn't eat around here, but the front desk has tons of menus to look at, and there's the restaurants on the same street. read more

It was wonderful to be back in the neighborhood where I grew up! Better yet, staying at the Bronx Opera House located in the center of the business hub and in close proximity to mass transportation, highways and walking bridges into Manhattan made it that much more pleasurable. Kudos to the entire staff that we encountered for great customer service. It began with Carlos at the front desk who exemplified the "can do" attitude. He volunteered that there was one available parking spot left at the back of the hotel where we can park as a first come first served basis. That was very helpful. If not, you can circle the neighborhood for a parking spot (but pay attention to the parking signs/restrictions). The place was very clean and met our expectations. The reviews that I had been watching were very consistent with this aspect. My wife who is sensitive with dust and too much fragrance had no problem whatsoever. The breakfast was excellent with a wide variety and always very well stocked. Kudos to Janet who was attentive and helpful. I made a new best friend with the "NESCAFE Alegria" commercial coffee machine. I tried three of the eight pre-programmed choices available during our stay. The taste of the coffee for all three (Latte, Cappuccino and Espresso) was exceptional! The hard boiled eggs were always warm and in their shell. Some reviews made reference to the neighborhood. This is NYC. It's a reflection of how the majority of New Yorkers live. We enjoyed being in a culture where we are exposed and enjoy the variety of what everyone brings to the table. We recommend you avail yourself of the # 2 and # 5 train to get around NYC just a short distance from the Opera House Hotel. NYC has a robust 24-hour mass transportation system. One last shout out to four other staff members who made our stay pleasant, Mirta, Miguel, Jose and Duane. Truly nice people and great customer service. read more

We had the pleasure of staying at this hotel for a couple of days in mid December 2017. We arrived about 6 hours before check-in time just to park our bags so we could go explore NYC. We did not request early check-in or anything, but the desk clerk told us a room was ready and we could take it now if we wanted. AWESOME! It is a short walk to the subway station, about 20-30 minute subway ride to downtown. All of the staff was very courteous. The rooms were extremely nice with quality furnishings throughout the room. We will return for our future NYC trips. Our only complaint is if you are in a street facing room it can be very noisy at night (emergency vehicle sirens, horns, trucks, etc...). Also, there are only 6 parking spots for the hotel. We used a 24hr lot just around the corner for $15/day (cash only). Overall, a GREAT EXPERIENCE! read more

I happened upon this place from some high Yelp ratings and great reviews, and was blown away by the experience. Duke - at the front desk - was upbeat, engaging and professional as he and other staff members took the time to explain the amenities and services that we could expect during our stay. One of these amenities was the ability to access the new Crunch gym next door. While I had every intention of heading in there in the AM, the bed was so comfortable that I would've needed the jaws of life to pry me from under the covers. The room was immaculate. Large and beautiful. The bathroom was bright and looked gorgeous. The cleanliness and attention to detail was on point. All in all, I'm elated that the Yelp community turned me onto a place of this caliber, and will certainly stay here again upon subsequent trips to Yankees games. read more

I'll start with my complaints first. The wifi isn't free (no big deal, just $8 p/day) but after I paid I could barely get service the first night; I couldn't even get 3G service. The second night wasn't any better but I was able to use my 3G. Parking. Ugh. Do yourself a favor and find a parking garage or lot before you get here. There is parking available but only a handful of spots and you don't want that surprise headache. That's it. There's a million stores near by with a Dunkin' Donuts & Boston Market right across the street. The hotel is in a very busy neighborhood but once I was inside on the 3rd floor I didn't hear a thing. The lobby was spotless, the guy who checked us in was nice and polite. Our room was spacious, two queen beds with clean, warm blankets. A microwave, safe and mini fridge were also included in our room. One minor inconvenience is there aren't any outlets near the beds so if you want to lay in bed on your phone consider bringing an extension cord or a really long charger cord. The heat works, I woke up so sweaty lol Then I discovered the thermostat which could easily be adjusted. The bathroom immaculate, the hot water gets so hot (I love that) and that really helps when you've had a long day running around NY. There is breakfast from 7-10 and a pretty nice selection of bagels, muffins, yogurt etc. There's a gym right next door that you can use, you just let them know at the front desk that you want to use it. Aside from my minor complaints I would recommend staying here. read more

Great hotel in an awful neighborhood. I was traveling by myself for an interview and this hotel was in a scary part of town. Once you're off the street and inside the door of this hotel, it is a magical place; however, you may need to plan for your personal safety. I got stared at and harassed on the sidewalk outside the hotel. In the middle of the day at the nearest metro station, two groups of men were yelling at each other, and a man actually walked up to me and whispered, "you should get outta here." ...My train came promptly and everything turned out okay. Despite the location, the hotel staff was great, the rooms were beautiful, and the rate was affordable. read more

Stayed here on a recent trip to NYC as a last minute budget booking. Some sexual harassment on the street during the day and early evening, but totally dead at night. The one block walk to the subway felt safe enough at night. The hotel is close enough I could have called and had the concierge keep an eye out for me if I felt unsafe. Very clean hotel with a decent breakfast included in the price. I was upgraded to a larger room at my midweek check-in after a 10 minute wait. (Another guest was having some issues that took a few minutes to resolve). Gym next door was free to guests. I slept great and enjoyed the easy access to the subway. I also used luggage storage my last day and had the hotel call me a $65 taxi for my JFK departure. read more

I was there for Memorial Day weekend and I was impressed with my room and how clean the hotel was. Lots of restaurants in the area so food was not a problem. The Subway is two blocks away from the hotel.. The Cons.. It's in the South Bronx.. Nothing glamorous here to see.. I was aware of the area so it was no surprise to me at all, BUT what bothered me about this hotel is that there is only parking for like 5 cars for a 60 Room Hotel?!?!!! I arrived at the hotel about 1 am on a Saturday Night I had to drop off my wife at the hotel while I parked the car 2 blocks away for fear of her safety. The parking garage is $10 a night but the neighborhood isn't the greatest place to walk around wearing a suit and tie in the middle of the night .. If the hotel gets a valet service I will give them a higher rating but the parking really dropped it down for me.. read more

I'm a sucker for great customer service and the staff at Opera House Hotel have exceeded my expectations. Here's the catcher...they've managed to do so BEFORE my actual stay with them! My reservation isn't until next month, but I've so appreciated and have been impressed thus far with their quick turnaround and attentiveness to the couple of concerns/inquires I've had before my trip NY and stay at their establishment. It's apparent that they take pride in making their guests feel welcomed and appreciated before and during their stay. Truly a breath of fresh air this hotel is and although I haven't yet stayed with them, I think it's safe to say that I may have found a new favored hotel to stay at whenever I visit NY. While the hotel was beautiful, the service was HORRIBLE. Do not go here!!! There are far better hotels, with the same ratings, for the same price or less. My husband and I stayed at this hotel over the weekend and were so disappointed in the quality of service that we actually considered leaving. The hotel advertises parking but when we arrived, they informed us that there was no parking available. For a 4-story hotel, they only had 3 parking spots. This does not qualify as parking and at the very least should be advertised as "extremely limited parking". However, we weren't informed of this until we arrived, even though we confirmed parking prior to checking in. Then, to make matters worse, there was no available parking in the vicinity so we actually had to walk 10 blocks to a garage, pay out of pocket, and the hotel did NOTHING about it. To rectify the situation, we spoke with both the manager on duty and the GM and they quite vehemently said it wasn't their problem and they don't guarantee parking on their website; even though "on-site parking" is clearly outlined on their site. Then we suggested they issue a refund only for the amount we paid for parking, and again, we were told that they wouldn't do anything for us. Another comment with regard to service: when we asked the front desk staff for assistance trying to find a place to eat in the area that was open, the concierge wasn't able to give any suggestions and essentially just hung up on us. What front desk staff can't provide the most basic recommendation for an open restaurant in the area? We ended up looking it up on our own, then confirming with a second staff member. On top of that, while the hotel claims to be four stars, everything about it reeked of low-budget standards. When house keeping came by, the floors were not vacuumed, trash was left behind the trash can, and the shower was not properly cleaned. The hotel staff found no problem with any of this. Additionally, the "flat screen LCD TV" is the size of a computer monitor, you have to pay for wifi, the towels are half the size of a standard towel, there was no hairdryer in the room, no full size mirror, and the "continental breakfast" was essentially oatmeal packets and pastries taken from a gas station food aisle. Furthermore, when asked about the hairdryer, the front desk staff seemed surprised it wasn't in the room- suggesting no standard or checklist performed by the housekeeping staff when cleaning and maintaining rooms.
