If I were a homeless dog, I would want to be taken to Operation Kindness. Dogs are housed in squeaky-clean, air-conditioned kennels, taken outside to walk every 2-3 hours, and enjoy time outside in pens with other dogs to play and exercise. They're frequently hugged and handled by volunteers. You can tell the difference when you walk by the kennels; the dogs are eager to meet you. All they've known is kindness from humans, so they are ready to welcome you as their friend. It's very rare to see a dirty kennel. Accidents are taken care of *immediately*. This allows dogs to continue their natural preference for a clean den, which is important to maintain housebreaking. Because it's such a terrific facility, people who care for their dogs, but have no choice but surrender, are likely to choose OK. Which means - you can find better quality, and better-cared-for dogs there. It's not a depressing place, like some 'pounds'. It's rather like an upscale 'doggie boutique'. I'm not saying the other facilities are bad - not at all. It's just that this one is exemplary. Weekends can be very busy, but they are open some evenings. If you are interested in a dog, grab it. They move quickly. In fact, it's hard to keep their database of dogs updated, so you really need to go and look in person. read more

In February 2017 my fiancé and I adopted a dog from Operation Kidness. They told us the dog was in "social" classes, but seemed to interact fine with us and our other dog. We ended up adopting him the same day. However, I really wish we hadn't simply because they knew he had some serious issues, but failed to disclose them. Fast forward to now, we are still struggling to address these issues. We love the dog, but are not equipped at handling these specific issues. I wish they would have warned us so that we would either be more prepared or could let them know that we couldn't handle them. I understand they want their dogs to get adopted, but in the end it is better to disclose issues so that they can find the right home. In the future we will not return to this place to adopt a dog as we find their practice of concealing information highly unethical. Also, just for reference, his issues have nothing to do with social interaction. He gets along fine with people and other dogs. read more

The very best atmosphere and care givers in Dallas. These animals are blessed to be here. I learned that black cats were the last to be adopted of all their animals so I asked to see a few and was shown 3 black brothers, about 6 months old... one other brother had been adopted. I could read the personalities and one stood out as the smartest with the best personality. I renamed him Christo, after the artist and he was the most incredible cat I've ever had. (tragically, he was killed in July and I am still devastated.) I immediately started calling him either by his name or whistling- so Christo always came to a whistle. He would fetch, stay, if I said "stay." He ate only Friskies seafood flavor (crunchy) and then only the juice out of soft food or those 'broths' they sell. He knew words and commands. He would try to open the doorknob with his paw and all of the people (mostly elderly) where I live ADORED him, especially since Christo got along with and played with all other pets here, from cats to very large dogs. Christo was a "King" and ruled this place. He had a sense of humor and would hide in tall grass and wait for a neighbor to walk by, then leap out to startle them It was hilarious! Then he'd go back and wait for the next victim!! ha!! He also would eat by plowing his jaw forward like a bulldozer, then shaking his head to shake out most of the bite, keeping his favorite pieces of food in his mouth if you said "Shake it, don't break it!" He made me laugh every day and it was very healing after having lost my teenaged son a few years ago. I may not find another cat like him but I am ready to try. read more

After looking for months online and at shelters we found Operation Kindness in Carrollton and watched their list of available dogs, We found one with the saddest eyes saying please come get me. After looking at 10 or 12 other dogs we found Tina. A little Jack Russell Terrier Mix. We took her for a walk and asked her to come with us and she did. If asked if I could describe the Operation Kindness Shelter in one word, my word of voice would be DEPLORABLE! As I existed my car and walked toward the facilities everything seemed pretty pleasant, nice building, ample room for the animals to roam and play in...the pleasantries need once I walked into the door! To say the least it was chaotic! I stood there for about 4-5 minutes before being greeted by possibly the rudest person they had on staff! Great Customer is definitely lacking at this facility! She angrily asked that I fill out some paper work, afterwards I was given a pass to see the animals. OMG! The smell! I immediately got sick! I know dogs don't smell great but c'mon! It's as if they haven't been bathed/groomed for months! The animals look sad, lonely and sickly! Needless to say I won't be adopting here. read more

I was thoroughly impressed by how clean and well managed the facility is. We adopted our kitty from them and they were very helpful when we had questions. They even made follow up calls to see how she was doing in our home and if we had any questions about her diet and behavior. They were not too keen about us wanting to declaw our kitten, but I understood her concerns with that. Later on we had Alley fixed there and they were very good about the procedure. Every time I have a friend or coworker ask about getting a pet I give them OK's number. We were not able to see the dogs because we were looking for kittens, but if the dog area is anything like the cat's I'm sure it's fantastic. Operation Kindness has been wonderful to us! We have gone a few times trying to find an adult smaller dog to be a companion to our 5 year old terrier, DJ. On our last trip in we fell in love with a little girl named Calinda who is now Zoë! She's 3 years old and her and DJ are playful siblings! It's only been 4 days and she is adjusting beautifully. When we went to Operation Kindness a woman named Laurie helped us- she was very patient and stayed with me and my fiancé for almost 2 hours while we got our dog and did a lengthy introduction- we had to make sure they would be a good fit. DJ is fickle sometimes and is particular about who he likes and does like. I could not be happier with the service and care that we received at Operation Kindness. This place is clean, caring, and most of all heart warming. Everyone that works there is wonderful including the large punt of volunteer staff. The pets cages are always clean and they always have a bed and some sort of toy to play with. All the dogs are let out regularly and the grounds are beautiful! I cannot say enough nice things about Operation Kindness. I recommend this place to ANYONE who is looking to rescue an animal. We will go back for our third dog eventually! This place is the worse, the sign says operation kindness but when I tried to surrender my cat, the lady who helped us sent us away the same day and said she'd call the next but didn't. Also she told us to stop by the next morning but they were closed. She didn't even call me and my boyfriend back and gave us her card but never answered. I only got to live in Texas for a year but finding a great animal shelter to volunteer at was high on my priority list. I LOVED OpK and it became my "happy place". I have volunteered with a variety of shelters, some really good, but OpK was by far the best. The animals get great care and they have an animal hospital right on site. The kennels and cages are kept very clean and each dog gets walked several times a day. Volunteers can attend free training there to learn how to teach a dog not to pull when on a leash, be an adoption counselor, learn about dog aggression and understand their body language, etc. I found most of the staff and volunteers to be really nice; I feel bad that many reviewers had a negative experience with a staff member. There are all types of personalities there just like anywhere but you shouldn't leave feeling like you were treated rudely. Having gone through several training opportunities I will offer a few insights. Please don't think that I am excusing rudeness though. There are a LOT of policies and procedures to learn and it's hard to remember everything, which probably accounts for being told something different by two different employees. I can understand feeling upset about having your heart set on a specific dog and being told that it wouldn't be a good fit. Please understand that the staff are just using their experience and knowledge of each animal to avoid adopting out a dog that will have a higher probability of being returned. For example, different breeds have different exercise needs and one of the main causes of bad or destructive behavior in dogs is not getting enough exercise. If someone falls in love with a dog because it is adorable, that is not a good reason to adopt it. If the dog you fall in love with has severe separation anxiety and it will be alone all day or you get a dog with a lot of energy and you live in a small apartment without a fenced in area where it can run, the staff are expected to try to steer you to a dog that is better suited to your lifestyle. This is nothing personal but just trying to find a good fit for the dog AND the people. Many people do come in knowing that the fit is key but you'd be surprised at how many don't. I remember a woman and her approximately 4 yr. old son returning a puppy because it was "aggressive" and "hyper". I sat with the puppy while she filled out the return paperwork and it was just your typical puppy--high energy. While I was sitting there the (small) puppy playfully jumped against the little boy and the child hauled off and smacked the poor thing! I know, this was a long post and I thank you for sticking with me. Just know that OpK is a great place to get a healthy, well cared for dog. If you are truly treated rudely I am sorry for that and apologize. That is not acceptable. read more

THIS IS WHAT VOLUNTEERING EXPERIENCE AFTER 2 YEARS AT OPERATION KINDNESS!!! On the last Sunday (7/30) I (volunteer) took a dog walked. I got trapped (there is a 'point' tree bump at the ground... it did not cut flat so it's point). Hit my forehead and a lot blood came out. I went to the medical office at the shelter. The nurse told me, 'we DO NOT have band-aid'. (Did I hear right???) So, she used some soft cloth and tape (there is NO medical tape so she used the regular office tape. Another big surprised.) I wondered why this Medical Center they DO NOT have those basic emergency kit. Is 'emergency kit' the basic medical list for every household? I always carry 'band-aid' on my purse. I saw 'AED' on every floor at my company. If I do not have accident today I will not know Operation Kindness have no this 'basic' emergency kit. Since that accident happened it's been over 1 week NO ONE CONTACTED with me. It's very disappointed. I do volunteer two years over there. I kept get email from Tomi (volunteer director) about the event for volunteer but there is $50 or $XX raffle ticket have to buy. Then she sends another email about annual staff meeting and need volunteer to help. I also couple volunteering at other places. They have two FREE dinners every year for volunteers. The volunteer week 2018 (April 15 - April 21) have whole week treat on the office for volunteers. What's the different??? Also need to mention is the greeter on the weekend. She NEVER greet to me. Do I have a friend? Will I refer my friend come to here? The answer is very obvious. I EVEN EMAILED TO LYNN HANDLEY, Director of Marketing AT 8/5 AND UNTIL TODAY NO NO RESPOND FROM HER. I can not say enough wonderful things about this organization! We went in to find the perfect family pet for us. The counselors are wonderful with letting you know maintenance and common characteristics of the different breeds to make sure you get the perfect fur baby for your family dynamics. We adopted a young boxer mix who was named Missy during her stay at operation kindness. We have since renamed her Rosie and she has quickly stolen our hearts. I have adopted several kittens and dogs from Operation Kindness and they are very through on adoption. If your pet gets sick once you get it home, they will allow you to bring them back for a check up instead of you having to pay for a pet visit within the first two weeks. We went to OK and were shown around and had one person guide us through the whole process. They invited us to come in as often as we liked to find just the right baby for our family. We got Hershey in April and we love the little rascal dearly. It's been a fantastic experience. I personally adopted my new furbaby when they were having a thing at Galleria back in Dec. I barely got any interaction with her but I could tell she was a doll. I can't knock a non-profit organization who does everything in their power to get dogs homes and out of the kill shelters. I can say that I wish a couple things had happened; One being that they were more thorough with the animals background. I understand they are getting their animals from another shelter most of the time, but it would be nice to know, was it a surrender, was the animal abused, where they from a mill? Pretty much anything would be good. Maybe they are short staffed? No idea. Mine had no history and I called the previous shelter my furbaby was in only to be told they had no record. Thank you Dallas Animal Services for that. I get it, the animal was gone and you put your focus into the ones that are there. I'm sure things happen quick, but I think it's important for owners to know their pets history. Second thing, speaking of history there were some discrepancies with the vet that works with OK, they thought there was a hip issue, but then there wasn't, so we followed up. There were no clear answers, BUT they did try and they did talk to the vet so that is good. We were told to keep an eye on her hips. The (owner/ operator/ CEO/ not sure what to call him[Jim?]) was very accommodating and helpful. I appreciated that. I also like the events they put on and will continue to support them. read more

Operation Kindness is so great! They do make it a little difficult to adopt only because they want to make sure that the animal you want matches with a pet that meets your needs. For example, if you want a pet that does not shed much they would not let you adopt a golden retriever because you both would be unhappy. It's really an amazing place. Many volunteers cycle through each year. Operation Kindness (OK) makes sure everyone is educated on the proper handling of the Rescues. I volunteered for about a 6 month period and it is very rewarding. There is a lot of moving parts but what's most important is the care of the animals. So many animals are in need of care and my little chiwinnie that I adopted recently is no different. She has a severe heart worm issue and after her first treatment was really sick 5 days later. I was up with her most of Satuday night and called OK Sunday morning. A Wonderful and Caring Ladie (Casey) told me that I could bring my dog in, even though no emergency VET was in duty. When I got there, Casey was really concerned and showed the type of compassion that was truly touching. My dog (Serenity) is feeling much better. This place is amazing! After visiting various shelters and rescues I was finally blown away by this facility and it's employees and my search for another dog was finally over!!! I popped in to look at some pets before bringing my kids and knew in my heart this was going it was perfect! I fell in love with all the pets and loved how the staff was so hands on with knowing the personalities of all the pets I encountered! I returned with my kids with my previews in mind...and finding the ones I liked was fun because they were hardly in their pens...they were being walked or out in one of the amazing play yard sanctuaries!!! We were blessed to have LAURIE help us! We got our hearts set on an Akita pup but she was not fully ready to be adopted yet...we visited a few times the following week to see if our girl could be adopted and then we met Laurie! She went above and beyond by following up with me and keeping me informed so we could be ready when our girl was ready to adopt! I meant to post earlier...but now I can add that her ability to see our families desire to have companion for my 2yr old dog bandit has brought us blessings beyond belief! We have our little Akita Ace and she has brought even more joy to us and her new found mama Bandit! I'm not sure there's enough words to express how grateful we are for operation kindness and Laurie...their passion shines through and are a blessing to all the animals and families they encounter! A resident cat at Operation Kindness adopted us last week. The good habits she learned at Operation Kindness make it more like a "Finishing School" than a shelter. The handlers provide honest opinions about the pets personality. Misha Lynn, or Gracie as we now call her is licensed, had all of her shots and is in good health. Habits learned at Operation Kindness are obvious. Gracie sleeps in her bed at 7:00 P.M. till morning. She rushes to the door to greet us as we drive up to the house and loves a warm lap. I LOVE Operation Kindness. We first went 6 years ago just because I had heard of them when we started "just looking" for a dog. The volunteer was so helpful and patient with us; for my husband and I we were picking out our first dog, and I've never been terribly comfortable around dogs as pets. We were also navigating the fact that my husband has allergies. They had pics and descriptions of dogs online, so when we went in, we knew a few dogs we wanted to meet. I agree; it is frustrating that they won't let you put an animal "on hold." The day we left, we just wanted to make sure we were really doing the right thing and choosing the right dog. The next day we were worried the dog we wanted would be adopted, so as soon as I got out of work I hurried over to the OK Corral and adopted my new best friend. The same volunteer walked me thru the rest of the process and we had a great experience. They gave us coupons for a few local pet stores, and we were on our way. They told us we needed to assume the dog was not trained, like a puppy, although he was 3 since they didn't have information. We fortunately adopted him on a 3-day holiday weekend, and 24 hours into his living at our home we realized, "this guy is pretty well trained." So...then we waited a few years to decide to get another dog to join our family. Not sure how this would work, since our 1st dog Bailey can be funny around other dogs. Well, we found a dog we wanted to visit, so we brought Bailey with us, as they suggest. When we got there this time, it was not as positive an experience, only because we went to see a dog only to find out it had some health issues that could be pretty significant...we are still fairly novice dog owners, so we weren't ready for that. Additionally, they wouldn't let both my husband and I go back with our current dog...we had to go back one at a time to see if we potentially liked the dog before the dog could come meet our current dog...I'm sure there are reasons for this, but after that experience we put our search on hold. Later, on Memorial Day weekend 2016 my husband saw a dog online we liked, and found out that OK was holding a pet adoption at a car dealership that a.m. Perfect! So, we brought Bailey with us, and we actually beat OK in getting there and when they got there, there were some issues with parking their trailer, so the volunteers seemed a little stressed out when they got there, but that is understandable! We were immediately able to see the dog we came for, which was great, and somehow she and Bailey bonded immediately. It was strange to me to hear from the volunteers that the dogs had been "fixed" yesterday so this little gal was on pain meds, and clearly not 100% herself. But, we fell in love with her anyway. Only after we got her home did she seem a little scared, sore from her surgery...but, she adapted very quickly, and in the days to follow we saw this sweet 2-year old little girl and her energetic, lively personality. We have 2 wonderful dogs from Operation Kindness, and I tell everyone I know they should adopt pets from this great organization. If/when we ever look for another dog in the future, it's the only place we'll go. They do a good job of telling you about the dog and trying to place it in a "forever home", but they don't go completely off the deep end and crazy like some of the rescue organizations that need to come see your house to let you adopt a dog! The staff here are incredibly friendly and our adoption counselor Tara made the entire adoption process very simple. She even gave us a Darth Vader collar after asking if we were Star Wars fans. I'm giving it 2 stars because I know this place does good work. I went today and I just didn't have the best overall experience. The lady at the front was very friendly. She told me how I could browse and then return back to the front when if I wanted to see a dog. I went back and found the cutest pup that I wanted to hold. When I returned to the front, the front desk lady told me unfortunately that the dog has just been adopted, but also let me know that he had a brother who was just as cute and friendly. She asked me to have a seat to wait on someone to bring the brother out. That's when it all went downhill. I sat and sat for about 20 minutes. I was confused because there were SO MANY workers, yet I waited for what felt like forever. While I sat and waited, I could see that they were preparing for an event of some sort. More workers passing by and setting up, and no one speaking to me or even glancing a smile. FINALLY, an adoption counselor finally came to get me. She was an older white lady with white hair. She was friendly looking, so I thought maybe this won't be so bad. It was a lady who I had seen walking around for the 20 minutes I sat and waited. She took me back to get the puppy. On our way, she said "This is a puppy and it's like a newborn. I hope you're so prepared. Then she asked if I'd ever had a dog because that's important. We then went to go get a leash to take him outside. When we got outside, puppy was afraid to walk on the leash and so we sat and just chatted. The problem wasn't that she wasn't nice. SHE WAS SOOOOO DISCOURAGING! She told me that I need to be home a lot to give the dog attention and to potty train. I told her I could be home now because it's spring break, but next week I return to work. The puppy will be in a crate throughout the day. Her face went from smiling to judgement. She said, "well you don't have any help. How are you going to do this?" I told her that I'm single and I have to work full time, but the puppy will get all the attention before and after work. I'm off by 3:30. She then suggested that I hire someone who can come every 3-4 hours to take him out. Who can afford that? I said "no ma'am, he will wait for me to get home!" *insert more judge mental looks* I have a friend who just got a new puppy and works full time. It's totally possible. After some more sitting and talking, she said, "maybe you should go and just think about it". I just couldn't take it anymore. She managed to tell me every single thing that would discourage me from taking the puppy home. I came in so excited, but that lady DID NOT want me to take that puppy. I understand that you tell any potential adopter risks and such, but making them feel bad for not being at home all day isn't the way to go. As I was leaving, the lady tells me that they won't hold puppies for anyone and I could come back within 90 days. No thanks ma'am. I want to go to a shelter who is going to tell me the negatives, but also embrace the thought of this pup having a loving home. I won't be returning. read more

The only reason I did not give five stars is because as other reviewers have stated I also thought the staff was a little bit condescending and acted like they really didn't want us to adopt the dog at first. Operation Kindness is one of a kind. I felt so welcomed when I came there looking for my next best forever friend after loosing my Shih Tzu of 8 years. I can not say enough about how much love and kindness they show every animal there, and the passion they have to get each one a new forever home. My new best friend is a Shih Tzu /Terrier mix and I fell in love with his photo on the web site. His name is Pas Cal and you could not ask for a better loving dog then he is. He did have a few health issues that they were treating him for, but with their loving care and medical personal they have on site he is just fine and we look forward to a long and happy life together. I have been a faithful supporter of Operation Kindness for years and I've recommended them to all of my friends and family. I've never had a bad experience until recently. I've been stopping by Operation Kindness weekly for the past 2 months to adopt a kitten. Every time I go in there, the kitten area is completely empty. I asked an employee about it and I was told there are some in foster homes. However, I haven't seen any come into the shelter in over 2 months, so I feel like I was just given the run around. Actually, the entire shelter is pretty thinned out, which is unusual. I'm not sure if there has been an employee change or maybe new guidelines, but whoever is responsible for getting animals into the shelter is not doing their job. Meanwhile, the city shelters are overflowing with kittens and they are killing them left and right. I went to 2 different city shelters and they were filled to the max with not just kittens, but dogs and cats as well. If you are truly operation Kindness, why aren't you trying to save some of these animals since you have the room? I guess I just don't understand and I am truly disappointed in your organization. I will no longer be making donations or recommending you to anyone. I rarely do reviews but this one struck a chord pretty deep. I called around 4:30pm yesterday after finding a cute black lab wandering the streets of Coppell. She had a 24/7 Petwatch tag on and we called and left our info and they contacted the owner. Our city shelter was closed as was Carrollton's and I have pets of my own and kids to get ready for the first day of school and I just wanted to find a safe place for this cutie. Her owner had been contacted so I knew someone would be coming to get her soon. I started towards Operation Kindness and called to give them a heads up. The lady I spoke with was rude and insisted if the dog was not from Carrollton, they would not take her (not even for the night)! She said to call my local police department and have them pick the dog up??? WTH?? As if the police need MORE things to do! Before I even had a chance to respond- she had hung up the phone on me...... I. Was. Speechless. :( Fortunately the owner called me on the drive back to Coppell and it was a happy ending!!! I spent an entire day and led a team of 50+ at Op Kind with my company (Give back day) building a new wooden pathway back in 2010 for the dogs. Everyone was so nice at that time- receiving this kind of treatment yesterday was such a disheartening experience. Whoever is in charge or reading these reviews should think hard about what's going on here and that people are actually taking time to explain what's happening here. Whoever was working yesterday has no business answering the phone, and can't imagine how that kind of person is caring for these animals. I called ahead of time and inquired about visiting the dogs. I'm going to adopt a dog but first wanted to acquaint my son with the dogs, as this is his first pet. The lady on the phone was very sweet and encouraged us to come and visit with the dogs to get my son acquainted with them. We looked at the dogs and then asked to play with one in particular. Another lady told us that if we weren't adopting today we couldn't see the dog. I explained we had called ahead for this very reason and she said no. Needless to say, this was incredibly disappointing to my son. What should have been a wonderful experience turned into a bad experience with horrible customer service. read more
