I have been reading the other comments and year after year the complains are the same, awful people, so that make me think, the city doesn't care to read the complaints and does nothing to change it. I wish I could give this place a gazillion stars. My boyfriend and I adopted our boy Meech (formerly Gordo) from Richardson Animal Shelter. We had the most amazing experience, everyone was so nice, specifically Bubba and Hailey. Bubba made sure that he was microchipped before we left and made sure we had everything we needed to care for Meech. We just moved to Texas from California and just feel so blessed to already have people so welcoming and helpful for us to start our life here. I came to this shelter looking for a dog but was saddened to see how many of the kennels were unclean. All the dogs were stepping in there own poop. So sad. I'm not sure how often they clean the kennels but it seemed to be in every single kennel had dog poop in it. read more

This place is rude beyond belief. I literally felt bad for bringing back a kitten within the 5 day period. I felt extremely bad about it and had a bad time doing it, and they legit make you feel 20 times worse when your honest as to why you can't keep a kitten that cries non-stop why you live in an apartment. Honestly I knew it was my fault for adopting and not remembering how much attention a kitten needs. I legit stated to give the "credit" they give to adopt another animal as a donation. And legit I'm told, "we've added you to our DNR List so you can't adopt from us again" Like thanks for reading my demeanor and telling I was upset for brining this kitten back and basically added salt to the wound. Her bedside manor is horrific. I would never do business here after the interactions I've seen with from the day I adopted to now. read more

We adopted a very sweet kitten here during the annual clear the shelter event. We are absolutely thrilled with her and it was a great low cost alternative to some of the higher priced rescues etc. About 4 months after we adopted her, we found an abandoned kitten near our home- but could not keep him. The shelter took him in and he was almost immediately adopted. The staff are nice and made the adoption process fairly easy. Yes - we didn't know about the appointment process either and had to make two trips. But that was our fault for not reading the website. Most of the negative reviews here appear to be people who were having problems returning or bringing in animals. For us it was good experience. I think working in shelter like this must be difficult and pretty thankless. read more

Awful human beings. I visited here today, because I found a stray 7 minutes down the road from this shelter at a gas station IN Richardson! They denied entry to the Husky stray because they said we weren't in their "jurisdiction". Just utter laziness. Should be ashamed. Someone went out of their way to do YOUR job of saving animals, and you sent them away. I was forced to drive 35 minutes to the Dallas Animal services, it's almost to Grand Prairie and Irving!!!???!? read more

I'm so happy I found snuggle bug. We changed her name to Cleopatra. She is the queen in our home and is enjoying her life with us. She fits in perfectly with our dogs and she's super healthy. I cant imagine life without her. I had a great experience at the shelter. The cat lady volunteers were fantastic and the man at the front made this process smooth and flawless even gave me a cute blanket to bring Cleo home in her carrier. My father-in-law and I went there on Tuesday to see a dog they had. Sight unseen, we wished to adopt a dog they had just received, as we had just lost a dear, family pet two weeks before, but they refused to take our name or to put us on a list, citing that it's their policy of "first come/first served". And the baby had one more day to see if the owner would lay claim. Then, it was going to go through being spay. We called EACH DAY to inquire after it, asking if we could be placed on a waiting list, and STILL, they continued to refuse, citing their policy! So, we were there on Friday morning, when they opened at 10:00, in hopes of being the first. There was one family waiting at the door, when we arrived, to pick up a recovery baby from a procedure. And another couple came up behind us, who were wanting to see the same baby as us. We came to learn the name was Calypso. When they asked who was there first, we said they came to the door after us, only to learn that they had been waiting in the parking lot SINCE 9:00!! So, we were out, despite our attempts all damned week long!! It's ridiculous to the extreme that we need to be camped out at the facility two days before hand in order to adopt, despite daily inquiries and visits to the shelter. The fact that the employees seemed absolutely devoid of any emotion (aka - robotic) during this process didn't help matter AT ALL!! I think the fact that we'd been trying to adopt an animal for 4 days rather trumps someone deciding to camp out an hour before the facility opened!! There NEEDS to be a policy change!!!! read more

I was desperately trying to find a place for my cat and had contacted every shelter and organization I could think of. As a last resort, I tried the Richardson Animal shelter. I explained my situation to the girl that answered the door. Her response was make an appointment. So I went on line and booked the first one I could. Remember I said I was desperate and that makes people do things they wouldn't normally do. I used my old city of Richardson address. About an hour later, this "gentleman" called me. No compassion or empathy what so ever. He was so arrogant and rude and only added to the stress I was under. Never asked me what the situation was and made accusations toward me which were not true. Yes it was wrong for me to use my old address but he never asked the reason for it. Looking back, I'm glad my cat was not surrendered there. If this is how they treat people, makes me wonder how they treat animals. read more

Our 12 1/2 year old Shepard mix was in very poor health. We adopted him ten years ago from the Richardson Animal Shelter. His best bud was our 11 year old Pit/Boston Terrier mix who loves to play. We didn't want her to be without another pup when the older one crossed the Rainbow Bridge so we searched the Richardson Animal Shelter web site and chose five different dogs we'd consider, with the third (in order of cage number) as our favorite. Making an appointment was super easy, and they worked around my wife's, my daughter's and my schedule. NO problem with rudeness. NO problem with COVID, so I'm sad to see others didn't have as positive an experience. Moving on, the Shelter has a nice little dog park where they do insist on a meet-and-greet if you have other dogs. Not a problem. Long story short, we saw #1. OK. We saw #2. OK. We saw #3 and didn't even consider seeing the other two. We adopted her on the spot. She's healthy, lively (perhaps a little too lively, but she's only one year old), got along playfully with our healthy dog and we took her home. We have no concerns about how well the Shelter cared for her, as you can see from the photos. The first is how she looked when her picture was taken after almost a year as a stray. The second is how she looked when we met her in the dog park. Amazing. Our failing dog has since died, but the pit/terrier and our new pup are getting along wonderfully and the older one is now far more active since she actually has someone to run around with. Like I said, I'm sorry to see so many disappointed folks commenting here, but, as far as we're concerned, the Richardson Animal Shelter is our "go to" place if we're ever in this position again. read more

I have seen several reviews that badmouthed Noura (yes this is how you spell her name) Noura is a selfless sole and does her very best to make sure ALL pets at the Richardson Animal Shelter are cared for! She goes beyond the call of duty! She does her very best to make room for all strays that come in so they do not get put down! She has dedicated her life to saving animals in need, even takes them home to care for them overnight! I am a foster for the Richardson Animal Shelter and have full confidence in Noura's ability and all shelter staff! In fact, Noura was promoted a few years ago due to her dedication to the animals that come through the shelter. Courtney has taken over Noura's position since she was promoted and she is also a very caring person! Do you know how hard it is to work at a shelter? You should probably spend some time volunteering at any shelter so you can see for yourself before badmouthing great people. AND the Shelter Staff do the best they can! I adopted a dog from this place almost 3 yrs ago, and the dog had ticks/and or fleas and today I get a collection letter about sterilization....................no other correspondence yrs later because they're too cheap to dial a 512 area code. Noura is the best! We adopted our catahoula puppy here and she is amazing and a great fit with all of our other rescue pets.

I adopted my Bichon a few years ago and one year later we adopted our Maltese from there too. The staff was absolutely wonderful and so friendly. I was really hesitant about the adoption at first since that was my first time having a dog. Nora was extremely patient with me and my hesitancy. But her description of our first dog and how he would do with a family with kids not used to animals was spot on. He was a perfect fit for us. That is why a year later we came back and adopted his brother. Love my babies! Thank u Richardson shelter for all that u did for our family. read more

I frequent this shelter because I bring donations like toys and food. As for a city animal shelter they are definitely doing the best the can with the resources they have avalible. They do care for the animals the best they can and give them as much time as they can. The only reason I don't give five stars yet is because they still use co2. They do microchipping, nail trims, and discount vet care. Definitely worth a stop in if you are looking for a new member of the family. read more

I adopted a sweet cat from this shelter, yes the prices are cheap to adopt an animal, and they have a great selection, but the care they provide for the animals is atrocious. The cat I adopted was extremely skinny, when I brought him home he was pure skin and bones and had no personality. It took a while to get him healthy and help him bring his personality out. The first day I brought him home I noticed he had rotten teeth that weren't taken care of at the shelter and he had a really botched neuter that they had done on him. In their words, on one of the sutures they made on his testies, the tissue had came back out after surgery and they "stuffed it back in and glued it shut" and told us to keep an eye on it Incase it came back out. Well, of course it came back out and was bleeding and looked awful. I called the shelter asking them when I can bring him back in to have it fixed since they were responsible for the surgery and the lady who answered was very rude and unhelpful and told me to wait until Monday to see if they had time for him (it was Friday morning when I called). This is extremely irresponsible and I would highly recommend getting a pet somewhere else. It seems like they spend their money on appearances and not truly caring and helping animals. Every time I went in before I got my cat there were animals covered in pee and feces and no one was spending time to help get the animals comfortable and clean. read more

The people who work here personify precisely what is wrong with people who work for cities who do not understand that their #1 job is to serve the citizens. These people give government employees a bad name. My 15 year old mixed terrier wandered off and I picked her up from the shelter. NORA,the employee behind the counter, was typing something and I asked her what she was typing. Instead of answering me like a normal person would she said 'I''ll show you after I print the form". She obviously doesn't understand that she is supposed to work for the citizens instead of the other way around. I also noticed Nora doesn't even know how to classify an animal. Instead of classifying my dog as a SENIOR (which she clearly is!), Nora marked Princess as an adult dog. I told Nora we got Princess in December of 1998 and she was 3 months old at that time. How do you calculate a date of birth as 1/13/2012 when we got the dog in 1998? Not only is Nora rude and should only shoveling crap in the back but she is clearly incompetent. Dennis Wooten (ASST DIR OF HEALTH-ANIMAL SRVC) makes $104,124.00 a year (http://www.cor.net/index.aspx?page=1050). For what I have no clue. He came out of his office and was just farting around, He clearly doesn't have enough to do. What I did see is someone approach him about a person who was trying to meet their obligations for their dog. The superior attitude and "how can we make things more difficult for this person instead of actually serving our citizens" showed me precisely where Nora's horrible non-customer service skills come from. I'd also like to mention how disgusted I was when I walked into the clinic. Oh, it is an extremely nice looking clinic, don' get me wrong, What really angered me was the specialized dog-print tiles on the floor and obviously expensive decorations. This is not a FOR PROFIT vet's office--this is a CITY animal shelter. How dare they waste the citizens money on unnecessary bs! Disgusting! read more
