I was delighted to find two of my favorite professionals, Dr Tawil & Karen Flynn, together in the coolest shop at OPT Optometric. Karen has been doing her best for years to fit my face into the coolest frames around. I love her work! The gorgeous Dr Tawil is very professional but makes you feel like a friend. I've been to other optometrists and they just can't get my sorry eyes fixed like Dr Tawil can. His equipment seems seriously high tech...in a beautiful space...what's not to love? Its funny how a new pair of glasses can make you feel like a brand new person. When the time came to swap my old frame, I made an appointment to see Dr. Tawil at OPT Optometrics in the Mission District of SF. I was impressed by OPT Optometric's state of the art equipment, no papers, no clunky machines. Everything completely digital! I suffer from bad astigmatism and was surprised to see, as part of my eye exam, a specific section dedicated for this optical defect. Dr. Tawil examination was thorough and the experience was totally laid back. Then came the difficult part, picking the new frames. Yikes! Luckily, Karen Flynn came through like a Jedi. She is amazingly patient with an eye for style & uniqueness. OPT Optometric has an awesome array of choices to compliment any look. Once we narrowed it down to the final two frames, I was tempted to get both. Even Dr. Tawil weighed in on the choice & we decided on some really sweet Dita Statemans in the end. They're very nice, there's no denying that. But my eye exam felt a bit cursory. I was in and out of the chair in about 10 minutes, and I don't fell like my prescription is perfect. My partner and a coworker have had similarly mediocre experiences here. They do have a nice selection of pricy frames though. Proceed with caution here. read more

I found Dr. Tawil at his new practice after relocating back to NorCal. So glad I did!! I have had some serious issues with my eyes the last few years, and my prescription has changed year-to-year. I saw some folks in LA while I was living there the past year, and they were pretty good - but nobody beats Dr. Tawil. He is everything you want in a really good doctor. He works really hard to make sure you have the best vision you can - not just adequate. He is thorough, patient, knoweldgeable, conscientious, and a really nice guy on top of it. The new shop is awesome, a great space with tons of frames, but really calm and serene so you don't feel like you're fighting for the optician's attention. While I was in with Dr. Tawil, Karin pulled frames for me try on to help reduce the 'dramatic' effect my rather hefty prescription has on lenses and also worked on my funky face better. That was AWESOME. Besides that, I left with some 'fancy' (his word) one-day lenses to try, rather than the lower end of the one-days that I was wearing. I didn't even know the 'fancy' version existed. So much nicer to have on my eyes. Someone else mentioned this as well, but it's really great to have a provider that you look forward to going to. I can't recommend them highly enough. They are exceptional at what they do in a field of adequate providers. Since moving to SF in '99, I had been going to various eye doctors trying to find someone who I felt really knew their stuff, would take the time to examine me carefully, and really listened to me. Finally, a few years ago, I found Dr. Philip Tawil purely by coincidence. He is the best possible combination of knowledgeable, skillful, thoughtful, and just plain super-nice. The only bad thing about eye exams with Dr. Philip is that they only happen once a year! Also, it's true what the other reviewers have said both about the available selection of frames AND the expert advice on what to choose. I've been wearing glasses since I was 5, and throughout my adult life have been choosing my frames myself. No one ever commented on my frames (no doubt adhering to the "if you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all" philosophy). Never, that is, until they helped me choose new frames last year. A pair of ic! berlin frames that cause even random people to approach me to tell me they look great. I believe it was Karen who helped me, and it went like this: I told her what I do for a living (real estate agent, so need to look professional), she went around the store collecting frames for me (no need for me to tag along "helping"), brought about 5 back and told me that these would all look stylish but not too over-the-top. I loved that I didn't have to wander around the store on my own looking for the right pair. She just brought them all to me, narrowing my choices from like 1,000,000 pairs of glasses to 5. The choice was easy, and now everyone thinks my glasses look great. So now I know that I must leave things to the professionals and let the folks at OPT help me select my frames. I went in for my yearly eye exam today, and had another amazing experience as I did in my prior visits. OPT Optometric you are the BEST! I was connected to Dr. Tawil by my dear friend Dr. Preston Brown, dentist and fellow San Francisco all-star. Let me tell you Dr. Tawil is the best, as is Karen, Queen of the Frames Optician and the space gorgeous warm and welcoming. I just recently had my first eye appointment with Dr. Tawil and the whole experience was superb. The moment you walk in - it's unlike any other frame store or opticians office. It's a cozy comfortable lounge or like your hip friend's living room. I was ushered to my exam into the modern and luxe room where it's more akin to going to the eye spa then the eye doctor. Dr. Tawil is confident, knowledgeable and kind, so I felt relaxed as the eye apt flew by. I also felt like Dr. Tawil really took his time making sure that we had the right prescription clearly walking through my various options for contact lenses and really listening to me and finding out what will be best for my lifestyle. After my exam came the real fun. Karen who has magically scanned your face somehow in 5 seconds, has laid out a bunch of frames to try. Let me tell you she is good, she somehow knows what is going to fit and gives you several styles to try. You get to play dress up in the full size big mirrors and try on different personalities and lifestyles. Seriously I have never had so much trying on and picking glasses. As a serial contact lens wearer I think I have actually found some amazing shades to bring out my inner librarian sex pot - that I will actually wear! Dr. Tawil was outstanding and the shop incredible. I was a few minutes early for my appointment and Dr. Tawil was finishing up some paperwork at the font counter and offered me a beverage while I waited. (nice!) So while I drank my bottled water, I had a few minutes to admire the distress wood paneling, matching cabinets, furniturte and mirrors. It's hands down the most tastefully decorated & designed optometrist office/eye glass shop that I have ever been in. I have a VSP plan but I often forget to update my eye prescription every year, but I will now that I discovered OPT Optometric!!! Dr. Tawil was extremely knowledgable and really helpful ..he answered all the questions I had about my eyes, as well as discussing all my options for possible lenses. OPT is wonderful! They have a terrific selection of super hip glasses that you would expect from a boutique shop in the Mission. I've received so many compliments on mine (side note: far superior to Warby Parkers). The staff are so friendly and kind -- they give great recommendations when you're trying out your glasses and are very patient. They were also very nice when I stopped by with my dog to pick up contacts (bonus marks for people who like animals). I've found it fairly easy to get an appointment, and the exams are efficient with optometrists who listen to your preferences. The storefront looks small and very trendy (not sure if that's a good or bad thing), but go in and take a look if you're looking for a new optometrist or glasses -- you'll be delighted. read more

My wife bought me a pair of hand made German optical glasses. Ever since day one one of the handle was loose and by my numerous trip to the original retailer where my wife bought the glasses they were not able to fix it. I wrote an email to the main office in Berlin Germany and their U.S. main office requesting a service center to repair my glasses! Finally I got a reply back with several authorized retailers (only a handful) and OPT was one of them. Karen fixed my glasses on the spot as I was watching, handled my glasses with special care (I'm very very picky) and when I asked her for the repair charges, she didn't charge me and said: "No problem , don't worry about it!" A very friendly, professional, and cute and cozy shop, A1 in my list for customer service, beside it's in very cute neighborhood of San Fran with lots of shops and adorable bistros and restaurants! These guys are great. They offer state-of-the-art eye exams and carry a big selection of designer frames. They're really friendly (I think I've interacted with pretty much everyone there by this point). Most importantly, they're super helpful when it comes to finding some frames that actually suit you i.e., they're honest when something doesn't work! If you come in with cheap glasses (WP) on, expect to be treated really disrespectfully. Dr. Tawil started my appointment by telling me that my frames were too big for my face. I could have really chosen better, in his opinion. On my way out, when I said that I would not be getting glasses, just the exam, he told me that I "should try to support local businesses." I said, "hey, don't hate the WP" and he responded that I should perhaps "try some glasses of quality next time." I was floored. I have heard very good things about this practice but Tawil is a serious dick. read more

Yes!!! Finally! Dr. Tawil and Karen Flynn back together again. I just walked past the new practice and it looks incredible! I've been going to Dr. Tawil for 3 years now, and no other Optometrist has ever been able to make me feel so at ease. He's friendly, knowledgeable, never seems rushed, and always takes the time to make sure my prescription is perfect before sending me out the door. He truly makes you feel like your eyes are the most important thing in the world to him during the exam. Such a refreshing experience after the brusqueness of my previous optometrist. Dr. Tawil also happens to be incredibly handsome, which makes the appointments just that little bit more enjoyable :-) In terms of picking frames, you will never find a better optician than Karen. Her uncanny ability to find the frames that work perfectly with your bone structure borders on artistic genius. I was absolutely thrilled with the service and skill of the staff at OPT. I was terrified to get my first ever formal eye exam and from the moment I told them they took things slow and were extremely patient. Nothing was nearly as scary or painful as I expected, but my worry/relief resulted in my first-ever acute panic attack/near-fainting spell, surrounded by strangers. Fortunately the OPT staff didn't actually feel like strangers - they assured me that they've had fainters before, gave me water, let me hang out for a while, and sent me happily on my way once I was back to normal. I loved OPT when I first went nearly 4 years ago. I loved the place and championed it. However, my experience this year with OPT was unsavory. Imagine going to your usual eye doctor for your eye exam, but experiencing standoff-ish somewhat sassy staff as you ask questions about the new prescription and lenses, and a doctor unwilling to address why the new prescription feels weird and uncomfortable or even give things another check. Imagine noticing discomfort with your new prescription, something off about your vision, feeling tired and unwell from your glasses, putting on the old prescription contacts or lenses that you had from prior to that visit and finding that things look and feel better with what you had before going. Imagine you go to a different optometrist for an exam and he finds that OPT gave you an inaccurate prescription and that your vision didn't change at all since before the OPT visit. OPT's prescription was so dramatically wrong that my new optometrist is concerned -- Dr. Tawil's erroneous prescription had a stronger prescription for my left eye, left the right eye unchanged, and added a bunch of expensive addons to my lenses like prisms and extreme blue tints that left my frames less than desired, while my new/old prescription is no prisms, and left and right eye have same degree of prescription. That level of error is not normal and indicates both a poor quality in service as well as practice. read more

Just got my new glasses today (first pair in 10 years) and I'm in love with them. They look amazing on me and my friends and colleagues seem to agree! Caleb's service was impeccable from start to finish, expertly combing over their selection matching me with ideal glasses for my face and skin tone. The glasses I chose make a statement, and I honestly wouldn't have thought I could pull them off so well, so without his help I probably never would have picked them off the shelf! Optically, they perform brilliantly and I am seeing the world so much clearer at all distances. As a software engineer, I appreciate the recommendation to go with a blue-blocking AR coating for computer use. I am now resolving text effortlessly, making me instantly more productive at my job. Dr. Tawil was a real pleasure to work with, efficiently finding my correct prescription and inspecting my eyes for the lattice degeneration a previous optometrist had warned about. I would give zero star if I could.This place is awful, if they keep this up they won't be in business for long. Overcharging customers, inaccurate exams, inaccurate prescription. They claimed my glasses were lost. I had to call them several times, they were taking too long to return my glasses. They also told me that my glasses were broken in transit. They gave me a different story each time I called. They charged me a lot for glasses (over $400.00) that I haven't wore because I can't see with the lenses they finally gave me. I've taught about taking them to small claims court because it's a shame and disgrace the way they do business. They get your money and you don't give the service you deserve. read more

I've unfortunately had a bad experience with OPT and then given them another change, which turned out to be an horrible and expensive experience. First, the eye exam was great, very professional, no complaints there. I then purchased a first pair of glasses. From the suggestion of the staff, I selected a light frame I liked the look of. However, I was disappointed when I tried the frame with my actual prescription lenses. You see, the suggested frame was much too light for the strength of my prescription, which made the glasses not hold in place very well. This was clearly a downgrade from my previous glasses. About a month after purchasing these, my backpack containing my glasses was stolen. I needed a replacement pair ASAP. I went back to OPT and clearly explained that I was happy with the look of the previous glasses but hated that they weren't comfortable and did not hold in place. Multiple times, I restated that my number one concern was that they must comfortable and usable for all sort of activities. After trying multiple pairs on, their staff suggested a pair that had a plastic frame. I voiced worries that a plastic frame would be less stable than a metal frame, but was assured that would not be the case. I decided to purchase the (very expensive) frame. After receiving it and having the frame adjusted, the glasses held ... for two days. Then the frame lost its adjustment and I had to go back for another adjustment. Then again. Then again. Then again. 5 times in the first month. These glasses were defective and would not hold the adjustment. They literally would fall off my face if I tilted my head downward. After complaining enough, I was assured they would exchange the glasses if one final adjustment did not fix the issue. It did not and I returned and ask for the promised new frame. They then reneged on their promise. After enough complaining to talking with the owner, they offer to sell me another pair at a discount (the price was still over 500$) AND I would have to use my insurance on top of that amount. I decided that I would simply buy my next pair somewhere else. I've spent over a thousand dollars at OPT on two pairs of glasses that I regretted. They are good at the styling aspect of the business, but not at the practical aspects. They also don't stand behind their product and make promises they don't keep. Don't go there. read more

Tl;DR: Incredibly warm, patient yet efficient service - I couldn't recommend more! Long version: I just moved down from Boston and needed to find a new Optometrist. I called OPT and they were able to slot me in the same day. When I showed up, Todd was incredibly warm and even offered tea for the 2-3 minutes I had to wait! The actual exam with Dr. Philip was awesome - he came across as really personable yet professional. He gave a lot of tips that my past optometrists hadn't, and explained a few medical things he was going to keep track of over the coming years. They scheduled me for a follow-up contact lens check-in the next week, and even sent a helpful email reminder the day before. The follow-up was very quick and I was set to order my contacts. Todd had a helpful rate sheet showing me the options, and explained very clearly what my end cost would be. The kicker: he even filled out my rebate form, sealed it in an envelope with stamp and pointed me to a mailbox around the corner! All in all an amazing optometrist I will highly recommend to friends & family! read more

I been going to OPT for a few years now and always love how I'm treated there my last exam was with Dr. Tawil and he's awesome makes you feel super comfortable and answers your questions in a very understandable way. This last time I went in for a check up I was attended by Dr. Kim and she's was great also! Very nice and helpful and attentive. Love them!!! Dr. Philip and Karen are the best optometrist/optician team ever! I had been going to Eye Gotcha for probably 15 years or so, with Dr. Philip being my optometrist for the last six years. When I learned that Dr. Philip and Karen had formed their own shop - OPT Optometric - I decided to break away from Eye Gotcha and follow them. So happy that I did. Dr. Philip is an amazing optometrist - incredibly knowledgeable about all things eye related, and he makes something as mundane as an eye appointment entertaining. His new shop has all the latest eye-testing technology, and as a result he fitted me with a new type of contacts that have me seeing better than ever. Didn't even know that was possible. And Karen is a genius at finding the perfect frames - I don't know how she does it. I learned years ago to just let her pick out several dozen frames that she thinks might work for me, and I always go with the frames that she thinks looks best. She's always right, and I end up getting loads of compliments on the frames she recommended. And their new shop is perfect. Beautiful/hip decor, parking right out front, and they have tons and tons of cute frames from both prominent and indie designers. I trek over from Oakland just to see them, and wouldn't dream of going anywhere else. I wish I could give them more than five stars. read more

Loved Dr.Tawil and the staff there- very friendly and knowledgable with a great curation of frames. 4 stars because I had to remind them three times to send me an itemized receipt for a contact lens rebate they told me I should apply to, and when they finally sent it over the price didn't match my credit card receipt (a $150 discrepancy). I checked with them and they said they had gotten the itemized receipt wrong and sent me over a new one.. at which point I had already applied for the rebate with the old, incorrect receipt.
