Went here finally for the first time after having lived in the city 6 years. Don't know how I made it this long, but I had never had chicken and dumplings! My friend was playing a show in Charlotte last Friday night at Petra's Bar. After her set, I went to find some dinner. I looked on Yelp. I found this place called Dish. It looked like southern goodness. I decided to try it out. I walked down the street and found Dish pretty easily. I went inside. It looked empty. I saw a sign that said "See Bartender for Table." There was no one in there. I looked and saw a sign up by the ceiling that said "Bar," so I headed that way. There's a back room with a second bar and tables. The bartender told me to pick a table. I found a booth in the back corner. Perfect for me as I was eating alone and wanted to people watch. I ordered the sweet and sour meatloaf. It was so good. It was sweet but with a kick. I'm very sensitive to spicy food, however I could eat this. It was too good to pass up on. It came with a nice big moist biscuit, a deviled egg, and a side of carrots. So good. I'm so glad I found this place. I don't know if I'll be back because I live in Charleston. I would recommend this place to any southern food lover! Did not disappoint! read more

Most experiences with Dish are fantastic but this one fell a little short. One entree ordered was fried chicken which was fried breast filet which caught us off guard as usually when fried chicken is on a menu it's on the bone. The chicken was juicy but lacked flavor and we asked the waitress for seasoning so it could be added at the table. The salmon cakes were ok but again lacked some flavor. The Dish had been among our favorite restaurants while living in Charlotte and teaching at university. Today we drove from our home in western North Carolina to have a late afternoon lunch/dinner at the Dish after moving from Charlotte nine years ago. There were only two tables of customers eating in the windows lined dining room. Yet against our wish to be seated with other guests adjacent to a window, the waitress insisted we be seated in the dank and darkened upper level in the bar area. When the bartender approached our table, I asked if we could be moved to fill our original seating request, which she graciously granted. Then dinning staffer 1 reluctantly returned to take our order. My food was served barely warm as an afterthought from the kitchen, hardly reminder of the Dish's better reputation. What had begun as an enthusiastic drive to visit an old favorite to begin celebration of our 55th wedding anniversary, reinforced the adage it's never the same. We hadn't been to Dish since they were reopened under new management and decided to pop by last night for dinner. It was even better than I remembered! Truly the best place in the area to get some classic comfort food dishes. I ordered the pot roast (a little on the salty side but that was perfect with the less salty mashed potatoes), and it came with a biscuit, deviled egg AND a side (I tried the seasonal salad, which was an incredibly fresh little cherry tomato, basil & balsamic masterpiece). So good. My husband got a Higher Ground IPA to drink and had the fried chicken with mashed potatoes, which he enjoyed as well. I love that they serve breakfast all day as well - definitely need to keep that in mind! And next time I'm definitely saving room for dessert - everything in the case looked so, so tasty. The staff are really friendly and welcoming too, and the space just feels like you're stepping back in time into a homey country restaurant (with a fun late-night bar in the back!). We are already pumped to come back and try some more of the delicious-sounding menu items (like the chicken & dumplings, Cajun seasoned meatloaf and pecan-crusted pork tenderloin!). Never even asked if we wanted drinks - I assumed they must have thought we only needed water. The dish used to be one of my most favorite spots!! I was so excited to be in the area to be able to stop by, I planned a team meeting there! I get there excited about what to order to only find out they are under new management. That's not always a bad thing but this time, the food just didn't taste the same; not even close. I initially got the chicken and dumplings and I think I tasted paprika in it. Yep paprika...it's like when people put raisins in potato salad;just why? Also it just was not tasty at all. Same with the Cajun Meatloaf. Why ruin such a wonderful staple that they had. It was way to spicy and no sauce which made it dry. One of my colleagues said the shrimp & grits was really good and the presentation of it was beautiful and well done. I exchanged my chicken & dumplings for the fried chicken and it was great! The service is outstanding...the fried green tomatoes were hot, fresh, crisp and awesome. The main entree that I had which was the fish and grits, I did not enjoy. The grits were good but the sauce was nothing but tomatoes and onion broth that to me over powered the entire dish. And the shrimp lacked season and appeared to be steamed. I would have preferred grilled or blackened. My other table mate seemed to like his shrimp and grits. My other friend had salmon, cauliflower rice with spinach and it looked great. We are fans of Dish and sadly we've noticed an obvious decline in the quality of the food yet an obvious increase in the price of the food. It's frustrating having to pay more for food that's not as good as it should be. The attention to detail is no longer there and honestly it looks like it's on their last leg. I'd like to take a moment to recognize our server Christina who was remarkable! Very attentive, friendly and welcoming. She deserves acknowledgment. On to the food which we enjoy, but it's the little details that can ruin a good meal. Like for example the incredibly HARD and STALE biscuit that's served with your meal. How can such a simple food item like a biscuit be ruined? And where's the attentiveness of the kitchen staff to let a BURNT biscuit reach any table. Unacceptable! Also I notice a significant increase in the prices yet my country fried steak was much much smaller than usual. So you're increasing prices but cutting my steak in half? Not cool! For sure the best breakfast I have had in Charlotte. I'm not much for fancy brunches anymore, I care about the quality and quantity of food, and Dish served me both. This is down home, real southern cooking in a homey restaurant style. A few booths line this restaurant, the rest of seating being table indoors and outdoors. I ordered the fried chicken thigh breakfast for $12.25. Wow- this breakfast was huge and just as flavorful as it was big in size! The fried chicken was sooo tender and juicy yet so crisp on the outside. The boneless thigh and crispy outside was seasoned so perfectly- it was simple- and tasted like just the right amount of salt and pepper. I am a huge gravy fan and the white gravy here just blended every bite in my mouth perfectly. The other star of the show for me was the hash brown casserole. Wow! I have not had such a tastey side here in CLT. For some reason, it kept reminding me of a thanksgiving side. Definitely recommend getting. I only had small bites of my eggs and biscuit as I was getting full- but all tasted good there. Service was lovely! Jenny kept our waters, coffees, and tea glasses full all the time. She was friendly and great to chat with. We arrived right at 10 on a Saturday and snagged a booth. When we left at 12 there were still open seats available. A lot of people had come, eaten, and left.. food and service were quick. Love that we didn't need a reservation to eat here as a party of 4 on the weekend! One of the better places for brunch in Charlotte. We arrived at 10am, and it was amazing there was no line or reservations required! The place exudes a down home southern style, and is beautifully simple and unassuming. But the food here is quite the opposite, so tasty and full of flavor! I ordered the tomato biscuit casserole, and an egg + cheese croissant sandwich. The casserole was something new, I've never had anything like it, but I would definitely get it again. The combination of tomato, onion, celery and crumbled biscuit was delightful. It is small though, so you'll want to get something to accompany. The croissant sandwich was perfectly flakey, and the scrambled eggs fresh and flavorful as well. The cherry on top was superb service from Jenny, who found her calling as a server, and was fun, friendly and a joy to be around. Next time you're looking for a good brunch, definitely give Dish a try. read more

I would not come back here sadly. :( My partner and I went for a date in April and were very excited! The atmosphere was cute and service was quick and helpful. That said, the food was just not up to par or worth the price. I got meatloaf and my partner got a burger. Both of us felt that those things were...fine. They were okay. I felt like the sauce on my meatloaf really clashed. But the reason I'm leaving this review is to tell people not to get the mac n cheese. It was the saddest mac n cheese I have ever seen. While the atmosphere has improved for the better, over the last few owners the food has gotten worse. Dish used to give massive portions for a good price, now you can "funk it up" and this and that for a higher price and smaller portion. It's just a bit disappointing overall. Can't believe this is my first review of dish, we have been coming here for years! Our go to is the Cajun Meatloaf, the meat and vegetarian version. Both are amazing! This place is a stable in the Plaza Midwood neighborhood and hopefully never leaves. We were able to make a reservation since our last visit was a family get together. The fried green tomatoes as an appetizer are an absolute must, don't forget to dip them in the dill sauce. However, some of our family members were not as excited as we were, the liver meal was under cooked and the grits had no flavor. I am not sure if it is due to staffing changes that some of the consistency was not there. We love Dish and are definitely coming back. However I hope for our next visit we will see some of that good consistency back. read more

When in Rome, I knew Dish would be the place to go for Southern. We came for breakfast and was surprised at how empty it was when we arrived. But don't be fooled...it definitely got packed as we were finishing up with our meal. They were very welcoming and at us down right away. It did take a while to actually get started thought. We ordered their Fried Green tomatoes to start, and my wife ordered their French toast with sausage and I ordered their Carolina Country Breakfast. Unfortunately, we didn't receive our green tomatoes until longer after both are other dishes arrived. I think they may have forgotten to be honest. My wife's French toast were good, but I only got one bite. They tasted homemade, and tasted like a recipe I have used at home. My Carolina Country Breakfast, was truly a Southern Breakfast. It was definitely very filling. It came with a very soft and buttery biscuit, sausage, gravy, grits and hash brown casserole. The hash browns were my least favorite. I'm more of a traditional crispy hash brown kind of guy, and this was very moist and served with raw onions. I took a few bites, but couldn't finish it since the rest of the meal filled me up. The grits were good and I used the gravy and poured it over the biscuits and ate it with the sausage making my own biscuits and gravy. The best was yet to come. I was already kind of full, but once I had a bite of those fried green tomatoes, it was take over. They were perfectly fried and so addicting to eat. I would have enjoyed them a lot more had I not been full. The breading was seasoned and fried perfectly. The tomatoes had a nice crunch and fresh taste. I will absolutely hit them up for a quick, easy brunch in Plaza Midwood as there's not typically wait and it's a simple breakfast. Even for dinner it's a quick wait and good, comfort food. My issue comes in with their late night menu. We walked in and no one was around, the group of women who stumbled in behind us told us just the back bar was open so we headed that way. The bartender was not friendly at all and told us immediately our bill was $6 for a bud light/Miller lite and never even seemed interested in taking a food order. While we finished our drinks he offered everyone else that came up the food and drink menu and was much more welcoming. Not sure what about us offended him but he was outwardly rude.
