On 6/10 I had been experiencing high anxiety, so I called my Optum doctor and he prescribed some anxiety medication. For the next  few days I felt better, but then a few days after that i started having major anxiety again with a RAPID PULSE RATE.  My normal pulse rate is 68, but now it was 106!!! (see photos) On the morning of 6/22 I called the Optum office to make an appointment.  I was instructed to go the Glendora office at 2:00pm 6/22 to see Jason Wagner, PA (Physician' Assistant).  I got there on-time, but was having difficulty breathing.  I was given a mask at the door and put it on loosely over my nose so I could breathe. I got to the receptionist and the first thing she said to me was 'put your mask on over your nose'. She said this to me as she herself had her mask falling off her nose.  I told her she needs to pull up her own mask.  She did not seem to appreciate her own hypocrisy as I took photos of her fumbling with her mask.  What they wanted was for me to have the mask tight across the bridge of my nose.  The problem was that having the mask that tight was interfering with my breathing, and I told the receptionist I was not comfortable doing that.  She called her manager since she was not capable of empathizing with their patient's medical conditions. Shortly thereafter was escorted to the exam room and left alone, so I took off my mask to get some breathing relief.  The girl that does the blood pressure came in with the same nasty attitude as the first girl and demanded that I put on my mask.  I put my mask on again loosely over my nose (in the same manner as the receptionist) so I could breathe. She refused to take my blood pressure and left the room.  I do admit that I  was getting irritated by this time.  Now the PA Jason Wagner came in and angrily demanded that I put a mask on tight across the bridge of my nose. I told him i could not BREATHE with it on like that.  Jason refused see me as a patient unless I complied with his demands for how to wear a mask, and brusquely left the exam room. I was now alone and desperate, and called 911 trying to get some emergency help for my difficulty breathing since no one at the Optum office would help me.  I ended up leaving under my own power without any treatment, but could just as easily left on a stretcher. Isn't it funny how the receptionist and other office workers can wear their masks the same way as I was, but strict compliance is only an issue for patients? There should be no mask mandates for patients which have already had Covid19 vaccinations, and I had the proof in my purse.  I have been going to Healthcare Partners/Opium for approximately 25+ YEARS with no difficulties until that day.  After the poor treatment I suffered there on 6/22, I checked the Optum Yelp ratings.  I am not surprised that of 17 of 33 reviews on Yelp are ONE STAR, and 3 are TWO STAR.  That is not very good. The doctors office is divided into two reception areas.  The area I normally visit (Dr. Ihsan Hakimeh and staff) are very nice and I have never complained or had a problem with them. That is NOT the case for the other area's staff, which I had the misfortune to interact with on this visit.  It amazes me the difference in professionalism between the two areas. Optum management needs to take a serious look at their staff hiring policies and training procedures if they intend to improve customer satisfaction ratings. My observation is that the fundamental cause for this entire episode is the unreasonable mask policies which are still being implemented at Optum even though the CDC and State of California have lifted mask mandates for vaccinated people.  I want to make it clear that I am not just a mask troublemaker.  I have been to Optum this year on my Doctor's side at least 3 times and have worn my mask as requested WHEN I DO NOT HAVE A BREATHING PROBLEM. My final message to Optum Management is that 'Flexibility in responding to patient needs' is severely lacking at this Optum facility

Didn't know know I had to tell the receptionist why exactly I have anxiety issues just to see the Dr. It's not your job to diagnose me!

There's a cute mural in the waiting room but it feels out of place for the rest of the space. The exam tables are really old wood tables & the gear seems like it's seen better days. There is no after-hours help or even help during office hours days the doctor is not in the office. My kids are rarely ill & I mainly went for kids well-check appointments & vaccines. The front desk staff is fantastic. Their main receptionist is always pleasant & helpful. There were 2 great nurse practitioners, one I believe was NP Stacey. She was fantastic. There was a 3rd NP for a very short time. She wouldn't use the correct term for a male's anatomy. We believe it's better to use the correct medical terms for our bodies rather than nicknames. It was weird that a medical professional was uncomfortable with that word [edited for content] Downside: They have no after hours contact number or doctor on call. My prior & current pediatrician have after hours numbers. We've had great experience with after hours calls and resolved problems without unnecessary trips to the Urgent Care/ER. My main complaint is that Dr. Mahfoud has no after hours help-line. Their only recommendation is to go to Urgent Care or ER. I just need to know if my kid is sick enough for a trip to the UC/ER or if there's something I could just do at home. When my daughter got Covid, I called on a Friday late morning, before lunch, during business hours. Dr. Mahfoud was not in the office & they told me he would not be available until Monday. I was inconsolable. Thankfully I had some nurse friends & a Google medical degree so I cautiously watched her day by day. I wanted to avoid UC/ER to avoid her exposure to others & to avoid exposing all of us to other sick people. As far as regular medical attention, he was OK. He made sure the kids were current on vaccines. One kid has been constantly underweight & it always worried me. He didn't address those issues. Nurse Stacey identified a possible problem and recommended specialists. I'm grateful for her advice. Nurse Stacey also noted possible issues with kid #2 that we've been monitoring & have resolved. But that's 5-stars for NP Stacey, not Dr. Mahfoud. He did handle one medical issue that we had to come in for. It wasn't serious. I believe he got us in in a reasonable amount of time. It's the lack of after hours help or help when he's not in the office that is a problem. As of this writing 5/10 of the reviews are for ear piercing. Just sayin'.

They treat you like you are DUMB and make you feel guilty if you have another question for the doctor even if you just left the examination room. In my opinion these medical assistants who work there try to intimidate people into doing things they would otherwise not like to do. I've been to three different pediatricians and I'm very glad that I moved my kid out of this place. The NP was very knowledgeable the Dr Mahmoud was knowledgeable but not very good with customer service. The initial reason I came here was because of the positive reviews for Dr. Fermin. But during the time my child was a client here, she was out on medical leave for undisclosed reasons. I never actually got to meet her. But if you're thinking of taking your child here, look elsewhere and their lobby was kind of drab and the building looks very old not very welcoming. Bad vibes. The main reason I left was because the service is horrible, they're not very nice if you don't follow their recommendations. They do not make you feel welcome to ask questions or make your own decisions. The main reason that they do this is because they want you to follow their vaccination schedule so that their insurance reimbursement rates are higher. I feel sorry for those without medical background because they will likely get bullied by the staff here. I'm not saying they are rude or mean. But they are certainly not welcoming nor do they explain things well. IMO I wouldn't recommend this place.

Review of a Pediatric Clinic's Communication and Professionalism…read more As a parent, choosing the right pediatrician for your child is a critical decision. You want a doctor who will provide compassionate care and make you feel comfortable during appointments. However, what happens when the clinic staff fails to communicate effectively with you about your child's pediatrician on staff? In this review, I will share my experience with a pediatric clinic that I believe needs to improve its communication and professionalism. The pediatric clinic's office staff was courteous and friendly upon making an appointment to see Dr. Fermin. Their phone skills were up to par. Once you arrive they create a welcoming atmosphere for patients and parents alike. However, my experience with this clinic took a turn when my husband arrived to take our daughter in for her appointment to see the pediatrician. The staff had failed to disclose in advance that my daughter would not see Dr. Janet Fermin but a male doctor instead. I searched and called various offices to make the appointment specifically with a female pediatrician for my daughter. I was disappointed to learn from my husband that Dr. Fermin was no longer practicing medicine and that the clinic had not informed me of this change in their practice. I felt misled and deceived because I believed that my daughter would see a female pediatrician. This experience left me feeling frustrated and concerned about the clinic's communication and professionalism. I believe that failing to disclose this critical information is deception and undermines the trust that parents have in their pediatrician. Furthermore, when I brought up my concerns to the office staff after the visit, they did not agree with my point of view. They seemed indifferent to my concerns and did not offer any solutions or alternatives. This lack of empathy and willingness to address my concerns left me feeling undervalued as a patient and parent. In conclusion, this office clearly does not inform their new patients who they will be seeing. By the way, start by being honest in the business name, since it is no long Janet Fermin, MD practice. This office needs to improve in their communication with new patients. The failure to disclose that my daughter would not see Dr. Janet Fermin but a male doctor instead was a significant oversight that undermined my trust in the clinic. I believe that good communication is essential for any medical practice, and failing to communicate effectively with patients is unacceptable. I hope that this review serves as feedback for the clinic to improve their communication and professionalism. It is vital to ensure that parents can trust their pediatricians and that they feel confident that their child is receiving the best care possible. I urge the clinic to take steps to ensure that they are transparent with their patients, address their concerns empathetically, and provide high-quality medical care.
