A time to Finish our front Landscaping My hubby had a…read moreVision and started but wasn't able to complete it for me. Again, with much Prayers for God's Guidance, Directions we contacted for 3 Bids. One company with the initials of SL on Yelp great reviews was not a pleasant experience for us. They wanted Photos before they would even consider to bid. After much stress I did the photos, took the measurements as requested. I didn't expect them to come out to bid but they did and their bid was very high. I kept on praying and D&I Landscaping appeared and had great Yelp reviews. My initial reaction was Alyssa Torres was my first contact very personable and then we booked for Luis Blanco to come out to access our needs. No request for measurements or photos at all. Our job was easier only because my hubby knew what he wanted to have done and gave them his Vision and with their advice and help we tweaked a few things. Pavers is not an easy job especially when there's already Pavers installed, the guy I watched him and he was so methodical and kept placing Pavers down until he felt that he got the flow down and it was an amazing and challenging job but he did very well in my opinion. What we Love about D&I , is one of the owners Irving and their Designer Luis came over to meet with us. D&I doesn't charge for a Designer as some other companies do its part of their services. Irving, David, Luis and Alyssa and the entire Crew are so professional again this company was very Honest, Reputable, Hardworking and most of all they listen to our needs. One time our water spigot started leaking or spouting and we have this Project Group Text that they set up for us, all we do is text and within a few minutes David one of the owners showed up and turned it off while we were gone. They installed a water spigot that is easy for us to reach. They finished our Irrigation system along with installing a Rain Bird timer. It's hard to find a good honest company with Integrity but this company has it. Remember the company with the Initials SL think of S = a hard rock. Well... we had 3 bids which included backyard and front yard. When I called SL company and explained change of plans not doing the backyard she said oh, well that changes your front yard quote by 8 - 10% I was livid are you kidding me? No, it changes your price, the Lord quickly had me shut the door on this company bad feelings from the time I contacted them had to do measurements and photos. When the guy showed up,from SL, I told him you're young but you are passing on small jobs because you don't have time, let me tell you something passing on small job could lead you to something bigger, he was cordial and what was funny was after I went into the house he took measurements. When during our conversation I said how can you bid without taking measurements he replied because I've been doing this a long time really you're not even 40 Years old. D&I I contacted them to not include our backyard sent me a new quote penny for penny they just took off the back yard quote the front yard stayed the same. Honesty and Integrity goes a long way plus they don't charge us for a Porta Potty as SL did on our quote $250 for a Porta Potty folks she said unless you want the crew into your house to potty. I did let our Painters use our restroom which is fine they're in our house anyway and they were so professional and kind to us. To each its own. Looking for good Quality Work, a company with Honesty, Interity and a great ideas on your Landscaping this is the company and we had Carpenter Bees in one of our Post. David one of the owners worked really hard into the dark repairing it and he also placed the boulders back onto our neighbors lot for them. Irving drops by to check on the progress of our project. Who does all of these extras? D&I Landscaping give them a call for a quote no job too big or small for them. One of our neighbors hired them shortly after seeing them here at our house for over a week. Thank you Irving, David, Luis, Alyssa for completing Marvin's vision for him this is all done now for our Front. @d&I landscaping incorporated

Well, let me tell you, D&I came to the rescue (not all heroes wear capes!) Within 1 week D&I had dug everything up, removed these trees and unwanted bushes and covered the entire area with weed cloth and pea gravel. They planted some really gorgeous flowers and shrubs, and set up irrigation so it's super low maintenance. The neighbors have commented that they love how the front lawn looks now! D&I are very communicative, kind, and give a fresh perspective to things. For example, I was thinking about redoing my backyard which I thought was stamped concrete. D&I inspected it and told me they are real flagstone and it's expensive and not worth replacing. I really appreciated that they weren't trying to squeeze every last penny out of us. They're trustworthy and I can't recommend them enough!

The team was incredibly reliable, highly communicative, and deeply detail-oriented throughout the entire project. Their craftsmanship is top-tier, and the high-quality work truly speaks for itself. They are so experienced that their partnership and suggestions enhanced the overall product and turned our outdoor space into the perfect peaceful retreat. We could not be happier with the results! Huge thanks to Matt, Danny and the team.

Another very happy customer of South Bay Design and Landscaping…read more We had South Bay out to do a full demolition of the existing "landscaping" from when we bought our house and the installation of an entirely new plan from our landscape designer (check out Dawn Engel- she's great!), which included a patio space, a pergola, driveway extensions, hogwire fence, raised planter beds, and a side gate added to our existing fence. These guys do not mess around. Demolition went insanely quickly, and our property was kept neat and tidy the entire time. We never once saw dirt tracked anywhere by the crew, which we can't say the same for any of the other contractors we've worked with (and we're actually quite happy with some of them!), and which becomes even more insane to think about when you consider the nature of landscaping work. Installation went as smoothly as South Bay possibly could have made it. Any time we ran into the occasional hiccup, as happens with all nontrivial projects, Matt, Danny, and Marcus offered thoughtful suggestions and made sure to confirm exactly what we wanted before proceeding. (We had either or both of Matt and Danny on-site most days of our project, and interacted with Marcus via email.) We were delayed a smidge by some heavy rain, but the crew worked through all but the worst of it (talking "if you step in that mud, you're going to lose a boot" type of rain). Partway through the install, we discovered that the previous landscapers had managed to make the L-shaped pathway leading from our driveway to our front door square with nothing- which wasn't easily noticed until we had the planter beds in and hogwire fence line chalked out. (South Bay had laid those out properly square to the driveway and house, as per our plan.) Matt, Danny, and crew were thankfully able to accommodate our request to fix our pathway up by picking up each segment and pushing the out-of-square part over by 4-6 inches; this added about a week of extra time to our project, mostly due to the fact that not all of the pavers could be reused, and that the pavers had actually been discontinued (!). The guys worked around this by sourcing very similar pavers in a different size, and basically cutting and grinding them to match our existing pavers. Post-install, the only way you'd know there are two different pavers in our pathway is if you'd seen it being taken apart and rebuilt. Plants, irrigation, and lighting all went in straightforwardly after the hardscaping work was finished, and Danny gave us a complete walkthrough of all our new outdoor systems. It's been about a week since our project was completed; the plants are all thriving, and we're still ecstatic about our new yards (and so are our neighbors!). In short: we had a fantastic experience working with South Bay Design and Landscaping for our landscaping project. They take pride in doing a quality job, and it shows in everything from demolition to day-to-day jobsite management to the finished project. If you're looking for landscapers, these are your guys. (Special thanks to Matt and Danny for graciously handling my incessant "are you sure you didn't forget about such-and-such little detail?" questions and never once forgetting about any of the details, and also to Sergio for spending basically an entire Saturday morning troubleshooting what ultimately turned out to be a manufacturing issue with our pergola.)

Green and rock came in with a very competitive bid, and I really appreciated the way they broke down every cost by line item so you could see where the money was being spent if changes needed to be made in the bid. Our final project included extensive soft and hardscape as well as the installation of second story decking, and a fire pit, and hot tub and fountain Kevin Monroy, the project manager, was awesome to work with. He was very professional very communicative, always responded quickly to text or emails. He was always very on top of things and moved the project along at a speed I never have experienced working with other contractors on projects. He clearly had the whole project thought through and always made sure that everything was ready to go for whatever the next step was. Anytime there were any questions or issues he was on top of it. He also has a very good eye for design and was creative and thought outside the box when it came to some decision-making during the process. In addition, he was always thinking ahead in order to prevent a potential issue if you could foresee it. He meshed very well with all of his workers and you could tell they had a lot of respect for him. I would highly recommend Green and Rock for any landscape project, no matter how little or big.

My HOA manager included a bid from Jensen that caught my attention since their pricing seemed mid-range (an intentional trick that manipulative management companies are taught to nudge HOA boards to select certain vendors). However, they made the mistake of including one of my neighboring HOA property on their reference list. I contacted the reference and luckily he told me he was planning to quit Jensen since they padded their invoice with work they did not actually do and he caught them. The way Jensen handled the problem is what rubbed the reference the wrong way. They refused to admit that there was a mistake, but he took before and after pictures of the missing item, and after he reported his finding, they tried to sneakily add the item and pretend it was there all along. Large companies like Jensen are basically just marketing companies trying to suck the funds out of HOA boards that don't understand financial details and how to audit invoices. The leaders of these companies should be put in prison for fraudulently padding invoices with work they don't intend to see through. The only reason I gave Jensen more than 1 star is because they made my neighboring HOA property look better than New Image Landscaping did, which was the original builder choice of crooked landscaping company that just stole money for "mow and blow" services. But we found a couple of more honest companies who did better and at a more competitive rate. Basically you should stay away from marketing companies that hire former used-car-salespeople.

I have never left a review on Yelp before, but hopefully this will save someone from the same scam…read morethat I encountered. This contractor bid on our FEMA-financed job, a retaining wall and driveway that was failing after our floods of last year. 'Bobby', the contractor, was very personable, had a good price, I hired him. He asked for the total amount upfront, and since I trusted him and wasn't up on what the 'rules' were, I paid him in full for the project. It came in just under $45,000, which was all the money FEMA had allocated for it. His bid specified that the wall was to be 4' high X 140' long, and was to include ADS drain pipe, catch basins / storm drains, drain rock and filter fabric material. It also specified 2 X 12 boards fastened with heavy duty screws, nuts/bolts & hardware. It included pickup, hauling, delivery & disposal fees. BUT...what was on the specs and what we actually got were very different things. There are NO drainage rocks or system. NO catch basins/storm drains, or filter fabric. Heavy-duty screws were NOT used. The wall is NOT 140' long; it is approx. 125' long, leaving a large GAP at the top of my driveway without any wall. The wall just comes to a stop and there's a dirt slope at the top. Bobby's worker running the backhoe took more dirt than necessary off the existing wall...and instead of hauling that dirt away, I was told that it could be put on another slope below my front yard - I was told that slope may be failing and needed more dirt anyway. Too much dirt - yards and yards and YARDS of dirt - was dumped there, and was right up against my neighbors' fences. I asked that it be taken away from the fences, and the workers did take a few shovelfuls of dirt away, but not enough. Now the heavy rains have come again. The water that should have been drained through the retaining wall rocks and pipe is running down our driveway and pooling at the bottom. Every time my son and I brought up concerns, Bobby insisted that 'he never left a job undone' and that the job 'wasn't finished yet'. My son and I gave him a punch list of concerns, all of which were unfinished items that were in the original bid. We have yet to see Bobby back again, although we have called, texted and emailed asking that he correct the unfinished items. I would not recommend this contractor to ANYONE, EVER. He's a smooth talker, but cuts corners and apparently hopes to get by with doing so!!

CA LAW says: A building permit is required for all new, replacement and or repaired retaining walls as defined by the California Building Code CBC 105.2 building 4 and the California Residential Code R105. 2 Building:3. If the wall is supporting a surcharge no matter the height, it will require a building permit.
